Loleeta Harper, 77, passed away on Wednesday, October 13, 2004 in Jacksonville, FL.
Born on November 5, 1926 in Blackshear, GA, she was a homemaker and of the Christian faith.
Survivors include her son, Freddie Rowland (Paula); daughters, Gondee Rowland and Cyndi Cornatzer (Darell); four grandchildren, Chris, Rocki, Amber and Sage; great-grandson, Rhylon; and many loving friends.

Hubert Clayton Tyre Sr.
Hubert Clayton Tyre Sr., 78, of Screven, passed away early Tuesday morning, October 19, 2004, at the Wayne Memorial Hospital in Jesup.
A native of Appling County, he had lived in Screven most of his life. He had worked for CSX for several years before working as an interviewer with the State of Georgia Labor Department until ill health forced him to retire. He was a member of the Salem Progressive Primitive Baptist Church and was a very active member of the Screven Masonic Lodge and the Alee Shrine Temple in Savannah. Over the past several years he, along with his friends, enjoyed visiting with the residents of area nursing homes and also with the patients of area hospitals. He devoted much of his time to collecting contributions from local businesses for the Shriners Crippled Children’s Hospital. He was a son of the late Silas “Sonnie” and Annie Thornton Tyre.
Survivors include his wife, Edith Rogers Tyre, Screven; a daughter, Marsha Tyre Dixon, Screven; a son and daughter-in-law, Clay and Linda Tyre, Screven; three sisters, Lois (Larry) Brown, Screven, Edith Williams, Waycross and Marlene Pyne, Orlando, FL; two brothers, John (Nell) Tyre, Gardi and Carroll (Irma) Tyre, Screven; two grandchildren, Brandi Dixon Deal (John) and Will Tyre, all of Screven and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 21, from the Salem Progressive Primitive Baptist Church in Screven with the Rev. Stanley Todd officiating.

Active pallbearers were Charlie Brown, Joey Miller, Josh Clifton, Kenny Thornton, Denny Tyre and David Tyre.
Honorary pallbearers were J.R. Dixon, Jay Beaver, Wes (Junior) Bennett and members of the Masonic Lodge and Hasan Shrine.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Alee Shriners Temple, PO Box 14147, Skidaway Road & Eisenberg Drive, Savannah, GA 31416.

Ernest Walling DeWitt
Ernest Walling DeWitt, 87, died Tuesday, October 19, 2004 at Golden Isles Hospice in Brunswick after an extended illness.
A native of the Zirkle Community of Pierce County, he had lived most of his life on St. Simons Island. He was preceded in death by his wife, Annie Margaret Arnold DeWitt; his parents, Ernest W. DeWitt and Vera Mae Lane DeWitt; a grandchild, Emily Ann Suber; a brother Dr. William T. DeWitt and a sister Jewell Cason Walker.
He was a 1936 graduate of Blackshear High School and then attended South Georgia College where he was a member of the football team.
Mr. DeWitt worked with the Army Corps of Engineers for most of his adult years as an Inspector. He was employed intermittently with the Ford Motor Company in Waycross, McRae and Douglas. With the Corps of Engineers, he was assigned to projects in Fort Stewart, Glynco Naval Base, Kings Bay and the Ports in Savannah and Charleston, SC.
Mr. DeWitt was an avid golfer, and after his retirement from the government, he worked part time for the Sea Island Company as a starter at St. Simons Island Club. He was a longtime member of St. Simons Island Baptist Church where he also served as an usher.
He was a 3rd degree, 50 Year Mason and for many years he was an active member of the Golden Island Masonic Lodge 707.
Survivors include two daughters, Ann Crowther (husband Jeffery), Statesboro and Mary Lane James (husband Billy), Blackshear; two sons, Ernest W. DeWitt III, St. Simons Island and Tommy A. Dewitt (wife Brenna), Brunswick; a sister-in-law, Dot DeWitt, Waycross; ten grandchildren, Parks Moss (wife Mary Kathryn), Savannah, Elizabeth Moss, Atlanta, Margaret Taylor (husband Gray), Mt. Pleasant, SC, Ernie DeWitt IV (wife Nicole), West Palm Beach, FL, Michael Suber (wife Melinda), Blackshear, McKenzie DeWitt and Tom DeWitt, both of Brunswick, Will James, Springfield, Rodney James (wife Dana), Patterson and John James (wife Holly), Blackshear, seven great-grandchildren, Marie, Blake and Emily Suber, Emma Grace, Eliza Taylor, Sarah and Henry Moss IV several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Graveside funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 22, from the Oakland cemetery in Waycross.

Carl Bennie Hall
Carl Bennie Hall, 58, of Blackshear, passed away early Wednesday morning, October 20, 2004, at the Satilla Regional Medical Center in Waycross following a sudden illness.
A native of Brantley County, he had lived in Blackshear for several years. He was the owner/operator of Carl Hall Trucking and also ran a paper route for the Waycross Journal Herald. He was a member of the Bennett Bay Hunting Club in Waresboro. He was a son of the late Talmadge and Annie Strickland Hall and was also preceded in death by a brother, T. J. Hall.
Survivors include his wife, Louise Burney Hall, Blackshear; three sons, Timmy (Brenda) Hall, Webster, FL and Terry (Sheila) Hall and Stevie Hall, all of Blackshear; a daughter, Dana Wright, Blackshear; four sisters, Dorothy Jones, Laverne Taylor and Geronda Nall, all of Waycross and Glenda Smoak, Homerville; five brothers, Lamar Hall, Tennessee, James Hall, Manor, Joe Hall and Tommy Hall, both of Waycross and Billy Hall, Homerville; four grandchildren, Breannah Hall, Dallas Hall, Ashlie Hall and Megan Hall and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 22, from the Pearson-Treadwell Chapel with the Rev. Van Spradley officiating.

Kathleen Johns Weiss
Kathleen Johns Weiss, 77, of Nahunta, passed away late Tuesday evening, October 19, 2004, at the Southeast Georgia Regional Medical Center in Brunswick.
A native of Brantley County, she had lived in Missouri for several years before making Matagorda, Texas her home. She was a retired nurse and had worked as the office manager for Dr. Richard Butsch in St. Louis for 26 years. She was a member of the school board and was also a member of the Nahunta United Methodist Church. She was a daughter of the late Everett and Carrie Crews Johns and was also preceded in death by her husband, Gus Weiss, all four of her sisters and by three brothers.
Survivors are three sons and a daughter-in-law, Carl and Sherry Dennis, Hidden Valley Lake, CA, Danny Dennis of the Far East and Bruce David Dennis of South America; two brothers, Carlys Johns, Waycross and Jerry Lesse Johns, Cullman, AL; five grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 24, from the Pearson-Treadwell Chapel with the Rev. James Dirst officiating.

Thomas Henry Jenkins
Thomas Henry Jenkins, 79, died Friday, October 15, 2004, at Pierce County Nursing Home in Blackshear, after a long illness.
He was born Feb. 26, 1925 to the late Thomas and Ashley Jenkins of Bristol. He received his education in the Pierce County public schools. At an early age, he joined Evergreen Church, later moving his membership to Union Chapel Baptist Church. He was a retired farmer.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred Jenkins, Alma; his children, Eva Jenkins, Douglas, Mary Jane King (husband Tim), Alma, Mammie Woodbury (Rubin) Nicholls, Calvin Jenkins, Alma, George Jenkins, Adrean), Alma, Ernest Edwards (Pemanda), Douglas, Mary Etta Edwards, Los Angeles, CA, Hattie Edwards, Jacksonville, FL, Julia Edwards, Bristol, Paula LaCount, Orlando, FL, Doretha Brown, Blackshear and Shirley Walker, Philadelphia, PA; one brother, Robert Jenkins (Agnes), Patterson; two sisters, Ruby Miller, Waycross and Thelma Smith, New Jersey; 22 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, sorrowing friends and hunting buddies.
Funeral services were held at noon on Saturday, Oct. 23, from the Union Chapel Baptist Church in Mershon.

Odell E. Pender
Odell E. Pender, 62, of Rahway, NJ, formerly of Blackshear, was called home to glory on Monday October 18, 2004 at the Rahway Hospital in Rahway, New Jersey.
A Blackshear native, Odell was born on April 19, 1942 as the seventh of nine children born to the union of the late Willie and Willie Joe Pender.
He graduated from Lee Street High School of Blackshear in 1961 and moved to New Jersey where he lived until his death. He was employed by United Services, Inc. of Kearny, New Jersey. Odell was a member of the Sons of Abraham Lodge # 221 of the International Free and Accepted Modern Masons and Order of the Eastern Star in Elizabeth, NJ for fourteen years and served as the Worshipful Master of the Lodge for seven of those fourteen years.
A member of Zion Missionary Baptist in Blackshear from a very early age, Odell returned when possible, to visit and worship with family and friends. He will always be remembered for his love of children and bowling. He was a very friendly and caring person who genuinely loved his work and meeting people, always with a smile.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by six brothers, Lavonza, Samuel, Sesserie, Frank, David and Lester.
He leaves to cherish loving memories, three sons, Derrick Pender, Blackshear, Bryant Murphy, Cleveland, OH, and Samuel Jerome Murphy, Rahway, NJ; one step-daughter, Cassandra McCray, Union, NJ; one daughter-in-law, Lucretia Murphy, Rahway, NJ; two sisters, Scealey P. Hooker and Bobbie (Richard) Fitzgerald, both of Savannah; two sisters-in-law, Mary Lee Thomas and Dallas Pender, both of Blackshear; two aunts, Ella Ladler, Miami, FL and Etta Hilliard, Blackshear; five grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday (today), Oct. 27 from the Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Blackshear with Pastor Jimmie L.R. Green, officiating.

Christopher Shane Strickland
Christopher Shane Strickland, 10, of Alapaha, died Wednesday, October 20, 2004, at Tift Regional Medical Center in Tifton.
He was a student at Berrien Elementary School.
Survivors include his father, Anthony Leon Hendricks, Blackshear; his mother, Cynthia Renee Strickland, Enigma; one brother, William Anthony Strickland, Enigma; paternal grandmother, Minnie Leaf, Enigma; paternal grandfather and grandmother, Andy and Ellen Sue Barnes, Waycross; paternal great-grandmother, Rachel Barnes Martin, Waycross; paternal great-grandfather, Leonard Riley, Mufreesboro, TN and several other relatives and friends.

Florine Watson Griner
Florine Watson Griner, 78, of Blackshear, passed away Thursday morning, October 14, 2004, at the Satilla Regional Medical Center.
A native of Pansey, AL, she had lived in Patterson for many years before moving to Blackshear several years ago. She was a housewife. Mrs. Griner was a member of the Patterson Baptist Church and the Hope Sunday School Class. She had also served as the church custodian for several years. She was a daughter of the Omer and Delsy Mae Lungsford Watson and was also preceded in death by her husband, James Woodrow “Jim” Griner, who passed away in 1991 and by a grandson, Caden Griner.
Survivors are two daughters and sons-in-law, Karen and Richard Henderson, Jacksonville, FL and Mary Ann and Stanley Smith, Hazlehurst; a son and daughter-in-law, James “Tim” and Patty Griner, Blackshear; two sisters, Juanita Hurley, Riverview, FL and Mary Cole, Auburndale, FL; a brother, the Rev. Larry D. Hatcher, Doylin, LA; nine grandchildren, Shea Hendry, James Griner, Eric Griner, Corbin Griner, Alicia Henderson, Ryan Henderson, James Ronald Drawdy, Shemane Smith and Travis Smith; a great grandchild and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 17, from the Patterson Baptist Church with the Rev. Larry Hatcher and the Rev. Jerry Price officiating.
