Lorene “Doll” Tatum Jacobs
Mrs. Lorene “Doll” Tatum Jacobs, 61, passed away late Thursday afternoon, May 20, 2004, at the Baptist Medical Center in Jacksonville.
A native of Ware County, she had lived in Pierce County for most of her life. A homemaker, she was also a member of the Laura Chapel Baptist Church and the Adult Sunday School Class. She was a daughter of the late Charles Alvin Sr. and Cleo Tuten Tatum.
Survivors are her husband, James “Cleve” Jacobs, Patterson; four daughters and sons-in-law, Dollene and Jimmy Dinkins, Patterson, Robin and Dana F. Brown, Blackshear and Penny and Rob Schulze and Sandy and Lynn Crosby, all of Waycross; a son, John Charles Jacobs, Patterson; two sisters, Geneva (H. B.) James, Waycross and Penny (Jim) Martin, Ft. Walton Beach, FL; a brother, Charles Alvin Tatum Jr.; 10 grandsons, Buddy Cooper, Erik Schulze, Alex Banach, Josh Banach, Coty Dinkins, Tatum Crawford, Brandon Crawford, Kyle Schulze, Caleb Jacobs and Cole Jacobs; three granddaughters, Harley Dinkins, Kelsey Schulze and Michelle Jacobs and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 23, from the Laura Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Tim Rowell, the Rev. Frank Jacobs and Dr. Tom Davis officiating.

Doris Dowling Russell
Doris Dowling Russell, 80, passed away Friday afternoon, May 21, 2004, at the Pierce County Nursing Home.
A native of Ware County, she had lived in Pierce County for most of her life. She was a graduate of Blackshear High School and the Draughton Business College in Savannah. She was a trained accountant and had worked for many years with various accounting firms in both Georgia and South Carolina. She was a homemaker after she retired. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Blackshear. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lorenzo Carroll Russell; her parents, Ezra and Naomi O’Steen Dowling; and two brothers, Morris Dowling and Loran Dowling.
Survivors include her daughter, Dr. Nancy Thornton, Jacksonville Beach, FL; three grandchildren, Nechelle and John Stamm, Ashlee Thornton, Russell Thornton, all of Athens; one great-granddaughter, Olivia Stamm, Athens and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 24, from the Pearson-Treadwell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Bill Young officiating.

Ronald Cauley Ellis
Ronald Cauley Ellis, 66, of Offerman, passed away early Wednesday morning, May 19, 2004, at the Satilla Regional Medical Center following a brief illness.
A native of Coffee County, he had lived in Pierce County for many years. He retired from the U.S. Air Force after twenty years of service, including service during Vietnam. During his military career he had the privilege of working on Air Force One and also on the Apollo Mission. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and also the Meritorious Service Medal. After his retirement from the military he worked with instrumentation and electronics for Austin Industries in Augusta for several years. He was of the Baptist faith and was an avid fisherman. He was the son of the late John C. and Beatrice Hatten Ellis.
Survivors include his wife, Laura Thomas Ellis, Patterson; three daughters and sons-in-law, Teresa and Howard Horne, Jamie and Dewayne Crisp and Karen and Shane Thornton, all of Patterson; two sisters, Ezell Thurman, Broxton and Myrtle Evans, Valdosta; five grandchildren, Dustin Horne, Jordan “Jody” Horne, Ashley Horne, Whitney Crisp and Sydney Crisp; his cat, Prince and several other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 21, from the Pearson-Treadwell Chapel with the Rev. Sammy Chancey, the Rev. Mike Lee and Woodrow Adams officiating.

Betty Jo Doster
1927-2005

Betty Jo Doster, Beloved Wife, Mother, Sister, Mother-in-Law, Grandmother and friend to many, journeyed home to be with her Lord and Savior on September 14, 2005, at her residence after a lengthy illness. Her love, warmth and kindness will be missed.
A native of Winder she was the daughter of the late Jack and Annie Wilbanks and was preceded in death by two sisters, Shirley Ellis and Charlotte Wilbanks, and two brothers, Kenneth and Royce Wilbanks.
She and her husband Will Doster, met and married
in 1948 and they shared 57 wonderful years together. Her life revolved around the love of her family and close friends. She was always known for her kindness to others and she was recognized by the VA Hospital of Decatur, Georgia for 16 years of service as a volunteer. Betty was considered the backbone of her family. Her strength, determination, strong will and love of life will be missed by all.
Survivors include her husband, Will Doster; two sons and their wives, Tom and Martha Doster of Athens, GA, Mike and Kathy Doster of Tucker, GA, and one grandson, Michael Doster. She is also survived by four sisters, Jackie Wheeler of Winder, GA, Helen Mitchell of Staham, GA, Beverly Langford of Decatur, GA, and Martha Warwick of Atlanta, GA and a number of nieces and nephews.
Services will be 3 pm Sunday September 18, 2005 at Bernstein Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bill Britt and Rev. Louis Miller officiating. iIntermentwill be at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 6-8 pm Saturday, September 17, 2005 at Bernstein Funeral Home.
Nephews will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Jenchieh Cheng

Jenchieh Cheng, age 91, of Mountain Laurel Run passed away on Sunday, October 9, 2005.
A native of China, Mr. Cheng was the son of the late Tin Oah and Hsu Cheng. He was retired from the Taiwan Military Forces, the Taiwan Police Dept and was a member of the Christian faith.
Survivors include his wife Chao Cheng of Athens; sons Victor Cheng of Athens; Henry Cheng and J.C. Cheng both of Saratoga, CA; daughters Ke Chen Cheng of Curpertino, Ca and Yung Chen Cheng of Saratoga, CA. and 8 grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at a later date in Sunnyvale, CA.

Mary Echols Beacham

Mary Echols Beacham, 98, died Wednesday, May 18, 2005 at Riverhill Drive, Athens. Thrice widowed, she had been married
to Howard Bradley Martin of Demorest, GA, Joseph Elbert Hardman of Commerce, GA and Jack Garlington Beacham of Athens. For many years, she was a beloved nurse in Northeast Georgia and was a member of Milledge Avenue Baptist Church.
Mrs. Beacham is survived by two daughters: Mary Anne Martin Hodgson and Nancy Hardman Revnes, wife of Michael Revnes, both of Athens; by a sister, Latrelle Warren of Cornelia, GA; two brothers, Tim Echols and wife Alice of Graniteville, SC and Bascom Echols and wife Ruth of Lula, GA; five grandchildren: Joseph Revnes of Athens, Peter Hodgson of Athens, Tom Hodgson of Atlanta, Joe Hodgson of Nashville, TN and Margaret Ossa of Nanaimo, BC Canada; by their spouses, ten great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Mary Beacham’s remains have been delivered to Emory University to their Body Donor Program for research, per her wishes.
A Memorial Service will be held 3 pm, Sunday May 29 at First Baptist Church in Commerce, GA.

Grant Lamar Dooley, Sr.

Grant Lamar Dooley, Sr., 83, of Athens, passed away Monday, January 10, 2005.
A native of Oconee County, Mr. Dooley was the son of Ed and Olivia Autry Dooley. A Veteran of the United States Navy, he served in WWII. A retired pharmacist, Mr. Dooley owned C&D; Pharmacy, Dooley Sick Room Supply and Village Drug Shop. He was a member of the St. James United Methodist Church.
In addition to his wife, Dorothy Dooley, survivors include a daughter, Lynn Powell of Marietta; a daughter and son-in-law, Janice and Arnold Medlock of Columbia, SC; a son and daughter-in-law, Grant and Phyllis Dooley, Jr. of Winder; two grandchildren, Katie and Matt Medlock.
Graveside Services will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery with Rev. Kent Reynolds officiating. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 Wednesday evening at Bernstein Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. James United Methodist Church Building Fund.

Jane Ashley
1932-2004

Jane Adcock Ashley, 72, Experiment Road died Monday September 20, 2004.
A lifelong resident of Oconee County, Mrs. Ashley was the daughter of the late James Lewis and Annie Ruth Malcolm Adcock. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Ashley and brothers Walter Daniel Adcock, Patrick Edward Adcock and Lewis Benjamin Adcock. Mrs. Ashley, served as National President of the Amvets, was a member of the Amvets Auxiliary Post 10, the Military Order of Cooties (MOC), V.F.W. Auxiliary Post 2872, DAV Auxiliary Unit 2, Clarke County Veterans Council, American Legion Post in Oglethorpe County and was on the advisory board of the Georgia War Veterans Home in Milledgeville. Mrs. Ashley retired from the University of Georgia after 45 years with the Georgia Crop Improvement Association and was also a member of the Bishop United Methodist Church.
Survivors include brothers Joe and Jimmy Adcock both of Watkinsville and sister Mavis Keyes of Bogart. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be held 2PM Wednesday at the chapel of Bernstein Funeral Home with Rev. Doug Bowers officiating. iIntermentwill follow in Evergreen Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-9PM Tuesday at Bernstein

Benjanin Heyward Allen
1917-2004
Athens, Georgia - Mr. Benjamin Heyward Allen, Sr., 86, of Milledge Circle, Athens, Ga. died Monday, May 10, 2004.
Mr. Allen was the son of the late Walter Percy Allen, and Pearl Gammill Allen. He was born October 5, 1917 in Lafayette, Alabama. He founded Heyward Allen Motor Company, Inc. and served as Chairman until his retirement in 1986.
Mr. Allen attended Ramsay High School in Birmingham, Alabama where he played quarterback and was the Captain of the 1937 'All Southern' championship football team. He attended the University of Georgia in 1938 where he was a three-year letterman with the Georgia Bulldog football team. He was elected Captain of the 1941 Orange Bowl team by his teammates. He graduated from the University of Georgia in 1942. During his college years, Mr. Allen was a member of the Gridiron Secret Society, the Blue Key Club, the University of Georgia Letterman's Club, and the Chi Phi Social Fraternity.
After college, Mr. Allen enlisted in the United States Navy and served with distinction as a Lieutenant in World War II aboard the USS Kalinin Bay aircraft carrier in the South Pacific.
After World War II, Mr. Allen began a career as an automobile dealer. In 1947 he returned to Athens and formed Heyward Allen Motor Company, Inc. At various times until his retirement, he operated automotive franchises for Kaiser, Jeep, Lincoln, Mercury, Fiat, Cadillac, Oldsmobile, Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, and Nissan. During his automotive career, Mr. Allen served as President of the Georgia Automobile Dealer's Association, a Director of the National Automobile Dealer's Association for over 10 years, and a founding Director of the American Imported Automobile Dealer's Association. He received numerous awards in recognition for his outstanding contribution to the automotive industry including the Time Magazine Quality Dealer Award in 1974.
Mr. Allen who became affectionately known as 'Coach' in his later life was also active in local civic, social and business affairs. He was President of the Athens Touchdown Club, Secretary-Treasurer of the Georgia Student Education Foundation, a Director of the First American Bank, the YMCA, and the Chamber of Commerce, and a member of the Athens City Club, the Athens Country Club and the First Baptist Church of Athens.
Survivors include his wife, Frances Stanier Allen, brother, Dr. James B. Allen, a daughter, Suzanne Allen Taylor, two sons, Alexander B. Allen and Benjamin Heyward Allen, Jr. and five grandchildren, Elizabeth Westbrook Allen, Clinton Alexander Allen, Corinne Chadwick Allen, Benjamin Heyward Allen, III, and Lucy Banner Allen.
Mr. Allen was blessed with the love, support, and friendship of his caregivers; Mrs. Lulu Daniels, Mrs. Betty Adams, Ms. Mahalia Taylor, and Mrs. Eloise Rucker.
Funeral Services will be held at Oconee Hill cemetery in Athens, Ga. at 11:00 am on Thursday May 13th, with the Reverend Jon Appleton officiating.
The family will receive friends at Bernstein Funeral Home, 3195 Atlanta Highway, Athens, Ga. from 6 to 8 pm on Wednesday May 12th.
