Viola Hancock Fleeman Akens, age 88, of Buster Fleeman Road passed away on Monday, January 3, 2005.

A native of Oglethorpe Co, Mrs. Akens was the daughter of the late William Thomas and Mary Jane Erwin Hancock. She was preceded in death by her first husband James Winn (Buster) Fleeman and daughter Peggy Fleeman Henson and was the widow of the late Ernest L. Akens. She was a retired seamstress at Thomas Textile and a member of the Winterville Baptist Church.

Survivors include a brother and sister in law Homer Oliver and Sue Hancock; sister and brother and law Bessie Jeanette Hancock and Millard Smith, Winterville; grandchildren Douglas Coile Henson Jr. and wife Jayne, Athens; Bradley Winn Henson and wife Lisa, Surf City, NJ; Daniel Thomas Henson and wife Bambi, Athens; step son and wife Lyle and Bonnie Akens, Atlanta; grandchildren Laryn Lauderdale, Cusseta, AL; Ashleigh Rabe, Almhult, Sweden, and Ryan Akens, Atlanta; great-grandchildren Douglas Coile Henson III, Michael Thomas Henson; Bradley Winn Henson, Jr.; Nicole Danielle Henson, Caroline Elaine Henson, Erik Rabe and Rebecka Rabe.

Funeral service will be held at 3PM Friday at the chapel of Bernstein Funeral Home with Rev. Stan Annandale and Rev. Benson Bottoms officiating. iIntermentwill follow in Evergreen Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at Bernstein from 6-8pm Thursday. Flowers are optional, those desiring may make contributions to the Winterville Baptist Church Building Fund, 305 N. Church Street, Winterville, Ga 30683.

Pallbearers will be Doug Henson, Jr., Brad Henson, Dan Henson, Trey Henson, Michael Henson, Bradley Henson, and Ryan Akens.

Francis B. Anthony
1920-2005
Perry, GA

Francis B. Anthony, 84, died Monday January 3 at home after an extended illness. He was the son of the late Fred and Maude Anthony. Survivors include his wife, Peggy Arthur Anthony; twin daughters Denise Usefof and Debra Fuhrman, of Ft Lauderdale, FL; four stepchildren, twelve grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Siblings, June Elder of Flagler Beach, FL, Bennie Heard and Josh Anthony of Center.

He graduated Benton High School in 1939 and Habersham College, Clarkston. After serving in WWII, he spent most of his productive years in Miami, FL working for the Federal Housing Authority. On returning to Georgia he worked for GRFA in Milledgeville, GA and Horton Homes.

There will be a viewing from 1 – 2 pm Wednesday January 5 at the Center United Methodist Church where the family will receive friends. Graveside services will be held immediately following, Bobby Anthony officiating.

In lieu of flowers please consider Hospice of Houston County 103 Westbridge Drive Warner Robins, GA 31088 or to the church cemetery Fund.

Billy Gene Mount
1936-2005
Nicholson, Ga

Billy Gene Mount, 68, 1148 Old Kings Bridge Road passed away on Friday, February 25, 2005.

A native of Jackson, TN, Mr. Mount was the son of the late Moses Howard and Willie Mary Morris Mount. A retired typographer he had co-authored a book entitled “A Letter To Reanna”. Mr. Mount had served in the US Naval Reserves, was a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans and the Beech Haven Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife Rasma Sudmalis Mount of Nicholson; daughter Andra Lee Mount, of Marietta; daughter and son in law Laura M. and Skip Franklin of Dawsonville; brother, Howard Greye Mount of Jackson, TN, granddaughter Reanna McKee of Marietta and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 2:30 PM Sunday at the Beech Haven Baptist Church with Rev. A.B. Sawyer officiating. iIntermentwill follow in Melwood cemetery in Stone Mountain, Ga. In lieu of flowers the family asks that contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, 1684 Barnett Shoals Road, Athens, Ga 30605.

The family will receive friends 6-8PM Saturday at Bernstein Funeral Home and the remains will lie in state at the church from 1:30 -2:30 PM Sunday at the church where the family will also receive friends.

Michael James Leslie Hyatt
1957-2005
Athens

Michael Hyatt, 47, of Athens, died on March 5, 2005.

A native of Toronto, Canada, Mr. Hyatt was the beloved son of James E. Hyatt of Athens and Audrey Auks of Hollywood, FL. He was the Operations Superintendent of Solid Waste for Athens-Clarke County, past Master of Mt. Vernon Lodge #22 and Board member of the Clute Barrow Nelson Life Foundation. Mr. Hyatt was a member of the Catholic faith.

Survivors in addition to his parents include wife, Susan Sockman Hyatt; daughter, Christine Lynn Gordon of Winder; Stepmother, Carolyn Hyatt of Athens; sisters, Kathy Higgins of New Castle, Canada, Dr. Christine Torres of Tampa, FL; Stepbrothers, Johnny Nixon, Gene Nixon, Benny Nixon, all of Athens; grandchildren, Nicole Hawkes, Taylor Hawkes, Chase Hawkes, Holley Gordon, Jacob Gordon, Jeffery Gordon, PFC 1st Class Joshua Gordon, and a number of nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 5 -9 pm on Tuesday March 8. Funeral Services will be held 7 pm Tuesday March 8, in the chapel of Bernstein Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Leukemia/Lymphoma Society, Georgia Chapter, 2625 Cumberland Parkway, # 205 Atlanta, GA 30339.

John Barrett Hogan
1971-2005
Kennesaw

John Barrett Hogan, 33, of Kennesaw Station Drive, died Sunday, February 27, 2005.

A native of Cobb County, Mr. Hogan is the son of Donald Barrett and Frances Pritchett Hogan of Hoschton. He worked as an electrician apprentice for AP Electrical and was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 613. He was a graduate of Cobb County High School and received an Associate Degree from Gwinnett Technical College.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by a sister, Kimberli Shea Hogan of Kennesaw.

The family will receive friends from 7 -8 pm on Tuesday March 1 in the Chapel of Bernstein Funeral Home followed by Funeral Service at 8:00. Ken Young and Mike Spradlin will officiate. A private interment will be held Wednesday.

Mary Freeman "Tubby" Smith
1921-2004
Bogart, Ga

Mary Freeman 'Tubby' Smith, age 83, of Jennings Mill Road passed away on Wednesday, November 24, 2004.

A native of Athens, Mrs. Smith was the daughter of the late Randall Stanley and Lily McCall Freeman. She was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore Edward Smith, Jr. 'Buck' and son George B. Smith 'Skipper'. She was retired from Sears where she was a long time employee and was a member of the Golden Globes of Milledge Ave. Baptist Church, the retired employees of Sears, and past president of the St. Mary's Auxiliary. Mrs. Smith was also a member of LIFT and the First United Methodist Church of Athens.

Survivors include daughter Patti Smith (John) Walsh of Watkinsville; daughter Lynn Balch of Jefferson; daughter in law Catherine Smith, Signal Mountain, TN; grandchildren Craig and Anna Marie Smith, Elizabeth Smith, Tricia and Jon Massey and Evan Walsh; great-grandchildren, Maddie Smith, Kate and Lauren Massey and and a number of nieces and nephews.

iIntermentservices will be held at 1PM Sunday at Oconee Hill cemetery with memorial services to follow at 3PM Sunday, November 28th, at Highland Hills Village with Rev. Jon Appleton, Rev. Grady Wigley and Dr. Bill Britt officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at Highland Hills Village. The family asks that in lieu of flowers that contributions be made to St. Mary's Hospice House, P. O. Box 6588, Athens, Ga 30604.

1929-2004
Watkinsville, GA

Horace Russell Savage, 75, of 1490 Saxon Road, passed away Monday December 6, 2004.

A native of Oconee County, Mr. Savage was born July 7, 1929 to the late William Dean and Ollie Ree Durham Savage. He was a veteran of the Korean War and later retired from General Wire and Cable in Watkinsville in 1992 after 29 years. He was preceded in death by a brother, Frank Savage.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Barbara Savage; daughters: Jill Witcher of Farmington, Teressa Savage of Winterville; a son and daughter-in-law: Russell and Melanie Savage of Watkinsville; six grandchildren: Crystal and George Nunn of Crawfordville, Tiffany and Stephanie Savage of Watkinsville, Russ Witcher of South Korea, Andy and Alan Witcher of Athens; three great-grandchildren; five sisters: Lula and Eddie Benedict of Athens, Jean and Dick Bell of Watkinsville, Nancy Berliner of West Palm Beach, FL; Ollie Van of Hampton, FL, Macie Vitug of Maysville; two brothers: Vernon and Pauline Savage of Watkinsville, Virgil and Hilda Savage of Dewey Rose.

Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 pm Thursday, December 9, 2004 at Saxon Road Baptist Church with the Rev. David Gattie officiating. iIntermentwill follow at Huff Cemetery. Pallbearers will be nephews and grandsons: Andy Witcher, Alan Witcher, George Nunn, Allan Savage, Charles Savage and Frank Savage.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 - 8:00 Wednesday, December 8, 2004.

Joe Horace (Mutt) Human, 79, of Danielsville Road died Friday, April 16, 2004.

A native of Franklin County, Mr. Human was the son of the late Clyde and Mozell Vickery Human. He was a retired auto mechanic.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Elizabeth Stewart Human of Athens; daughters: Debbie Benson of Athens and Linda Nicholson of Franklin, TN; son, Steve Human, of Norcross; sister, Susan Goodwin of Savannah; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Graveside Services will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday, April 18, in Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery with the Rev. Elmer Butler officiating.

The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 at Bernstein Funeral Home.

Regina Fay Jackson
1963-2004
Danielsville, Ga.

Regina Fay Whitfield Jackson, age 41, 628 Hwy 191 passed away on December 23, 2004.

A native of Clarke County, Mrs. Jackson was the daughter of Donald Whitfield of Hull and Chanda Fay Chafin of Danielsville. She was a graduate of Madison Co. High School in 1980 and served in the United States Army for four years. She was a homemaker and a member of the Baptist faith.

Survivors in addition to her parents are husband, Allen Jackson, Danielsville; sons Rudy Luna, Jr and Ruben Luna and daughter Jasmine Jackson all of Danielsville; two sisters, Rhonda Daniel of Bishop and Shea Thornton of Arnoldsville and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 2PM Monday at the chapel of Bernstein Funeral Home with Rev. Ray Finger and Rev. Larry Elliott officiating. iIntermentwill follow in Evergreen Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at Bernstein from 6-9 PM Sunday.

Pallbearers will be Ralph Whitfield, B. J. Whitfield, Craig Butts, Pete Brown, Dennis Daniel and Scott Thornton.

Joseph A. Wilfong
1940-2004
Joseph Avery Wilfong, Jr., age 64, of Birmingham, Alabama, died Thursday, May 13, 2004, after a brief illness. A native of Athens, Mr. Wilfong was the son of Kathleen Henson Wilfong and the late Joseph Avery Wilfong, Sr. He was preceded in death by a son, Joseph Avery Wilfong III. He graduated from Athens High School and then from the Georgia Institute of Technology with a B.S. degree in industrial engineering. After college, Mr. Wilfong entered the United States Marine Corps and obtained the rank of first lieutenant. Upon receiving an honorable discharge, he relocated to Birmingham and remained there for the rest of his life. He began work in the computer industry with IBM and continued in that field for his entire career. Mr. Wilfong was a long-time member and elder of Shades Valley Presbyterian Church in Birmingham. He was also an avid golfer.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include: mother of his children, Lydia W. Wilfong; daughter and son-in-law, Barbara W. Fletcher and Thomas M. Fletcher III; daughter, Laura E. Wilfong; granddaughter, Elizabeth Avery Fletcher; grandson, Thomas M. Fletcher IV, all of Birmingham; sister and brother-in-law, Jane W. and R. Kipling Mann; brother, W. Thomas Wilfong; and nephew, Joseph T. Mann all of Athens.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 17, 2004, in Oconee Hill cemetery in Athens, with the Reverend Joseph C. Berry officiating.

The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 at Bernstein Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Athens First Presbyterian Church, P. O. Box 1592, Athens, Georgia 30603 or to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, 2625 Cumberland Parkway, Ste 205, Atlanta, GA 30339.
