William F. “Dusty” Rhodes, Jr.
1924-2006
Athens, GA

William F. “Dusty” Rhodes, Jr., 81, of Athens, passed away Thursday, March 9, 2006.

Mr. Rhodes, a native of Tampa, FL, was the son of the late William F. Sr., and Jett Rhodes. A veteran of World War II, he lived most of his life in Winder, GA where he was an educator before retiring to Athens in 1979.

Survivors include his wife Kathleen Rhodes, children; Dorothy Ann Tunmer of Winterville, Mary Helen Rhodes of Greensboro, Kathy Elaine Rhodes of Atlanta, and Thomas F. Rhodes of Ormond Beach FL, sisters; Helen R. Jackson of Athens, sister in law; Peggy G. Maxwell of Roswell, five grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 3 PM, Friday, March 10, 2006 at Bernstein Funeral Home with Father David McGinnis officiating. The family will receive friends at 2 PM at Bernstein Funeral Home on Friday. iIntermentwill be at Evergreen Memorial Park.

Charles K. Hambrick
Charles Knight Hambrick. Jr, 87, of Clarke Circle in Lexington passed away on Friday, January 6, 2006.

A native of Troup County, Mr. Hambrick was the son the late Charles Knight and Pauline Smith Hambrick, Sr. Mr. Hambrick served in the Army Air Corps during WW II and opened the first Kroger grocery store in Athens in 1944 and was store manager for the next 28years until his retirement. After his retirement he opened the Qwik Serv, which was Athens first convenience store, and over the next fourteen years he opened an additional four stores. He also taught ground flight school in Athens and Atlanta for several years. In 1982 Mr. Hambrick moved from Athens to Lexington, Ga and was a member of the Lexington Masonic Lodge # 158, the Lexington American Legion Post 123, the Athens Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 2872 and a member of the Presbyterian faith.

Survivors include a daughter and son in law Diane and Paul Heidenreich of Calabassa, CA; son and daughter in law Ronald Hunt and Donna Hambrick of Pensacola, FL; granddaughter Amanda Hambrick; grandson and wife Joey and Sara Frederickson all of Pensacola, FL and eleven years old twin grandchildren Zack and Kate Heidenreick of Callabassa, Ca.

Funeral services will be 3PM Sunday at the chapel of Bernstein Funeral Home with Walter McCannon, Jr. and Wayne Lance officiating. iIntermentwill follow in Evergreen Memorial Park with full Masonic rites. The family will receive friends 1-3PM Sunday at Bernstein Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers the family asks that contributions be made to the Vista Care Hospice, Ben Burton Rd, Athens, Ga 30606

Pallbearers will be Eugene Day, John Meyer, Alvin Stamps, Rob Coffeen, Rex Coffeen and Jacob Day. Members of the Lexington Masonic Lodge will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Alice Mazzella Williams
1904-2004
Athens, Georgia

Alice Mazzella Williams, 99, died Saturday, September 18, 2004 at Walton Medical Center.

Mrs. Williams was born on the Isle of Ponza, Italy, on November 1; 1904.She was preceded in death by her husband Walter Williams, Sr., and siblings, John Mazzella, Joseph Mazzella, Anthony Mazzella, Sally Romano and Anna Gagner.

Memorial Services will be at a later date.

She is survived by her sons, Walter Williams and wife Susan of Athens, GA, and Robert Williams and wife, Helen of Kalkaska, MI., grandchildren, Jeffrey Williams of Greensboro, NC, Shari Messer and husband Paul of Athens, GA, Karen Sandoli and husband Bryan of Napa, CA. Daniel Williams and wife Carol of Kaneohe, HI, Amy Fiddler and husband Gordon of Romeo, MI and Glen Williams and wife Mercy of St. Clair Shores, MI., Great grandchildren Hayden and Conley Messer.

Margaret Chambers Alewine
1933-2005
Athens

Margaret Chambers Alewine, 71, of Grove Street, died Thursday March 10, 2005.

A native of Jackson County, Ms. Alewine was the daughter of Mattie Chambers of Commerce and the late Claude Chambers. She was also preceded in death by her husband, O.B. Alewine.

Survivors include children, O’Brien Alewine of Winterville and Gail Guffey of Athens; brothers, Claude Chambers, Jr. and David Chambers both of Nicholson, Henry Chambers of Commerce; sister, Evelyn Wilbanks of Nicholson; seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held 2 pm Sunday, March 13 at Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery with the Rev. Luther Fouche officiating. The family will receive friends from 12 – 2 pm on Sunday, March 13 at Bernstein Funeral Home.

Mary Jean Kitchens
1917-2004

Mary Jean Kelly Kitchen, 86, of 582 Medinah Drive, formerly of Athens, died Wednesday, April 21, 2004.

A native of Knoxville, TN, Mrs. Kitchen was the daughter of the late John Thomas and Mary Agnes Murray Kelly. Her husband, James Monroe Kitchen, Jr., preceded her in death. She was a homemaker and while in Athens attended St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Survivors include her daughter, Jean K. Crabtree of Martinez; sons: James M. Kitchen of Clarksville, TN, John Thomas Kitchen and Joseph Michael Kitchen both of Memphis, TN; eleven grandchildren; and eleven great grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 24, in Bernstein Funeral Home Chapel with Father Jack McDowell officiating. Entombment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends Friday from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Bernstein Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Catholic Center University of Georgia, 1344 South Lumpkin Street, Athens, GA 30605. Bernstein Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Richard Vance Wellman
1922-2005

Richard Vance Wellman, 82, renowned legal educator and scholar, passed away June 3, 2005 in Athens, Georgia.

He was born on September 10, 1922 in Worthington, Ohio, son of Burton Singley and Blanche Gardner Wellman. He received his Juris Doctor from the University of Michigan in 1949.

Wellman was a nationally recognized figure in the fields of probate, trusts and real property. He was the Robert Gotten Alston Professor of Law at the University of Georgia Law School from 1974 to 1990, after serving on the University of Michigan law faculty from 1954 to 1974. A life member with the National Conference of Commissioners of Uniform State Laws, he also served as a Commissioner for the States of Michigan (1970-1974) and Georgia (1974-2005). Professor Wellman was the Reporter and principal drafter of the Uniform Probate Code, promulgated by the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws in 1969 and several times thereafter. The Code has been enacted in its entirety in over 20 states and substantial portions of it are law in virtually every state. From 1972 to 1990, Professor Wellman served as Educational Director of the Joint Editorial Board for the Uniform Probate Code and, from 1990-98 he served as the Executive Director of the Joint Editorial Board. From 1969 until his death, he was tireless in his efforts in supporting legislative adoption of the UPC. He was active in the American Law Institute and the American Bar Association.

A resident of Athens, Georgia since 1975, Wellman was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, *lhe Athens Torch Club and the Athens Country Club. He was also a longtime member of the St. John's Cove community at Otsego Lake, Michigan, where he pursued his avocations of fishing, sailing and home repair.

A devoted husband and father, he married the former Natalie Lancaster Robertson in 1984, following the death of his first wife Louise Dewey Laylin. Wellman is survived by his wife Natalie; his sister Marcia MacMulljem of Ann Arbor, Ml; his daughters Martha (Jim) Wellman of Tallahassee, FL; Anne (John) Walker of Tecumseh, Ml; Jane (Jeff) Wellman of Bethesda, MD; Sarah (Ted) Yoder of Midland, Ml; his sons Peter (Mary) Wellman of Stone Mountain, GA; Charles (Lisa) Wellman of Charleston, SC; his step-daughter Natalie (Peter) Thomas of Wilmington, DE; stepA¬sons John Robertson of Lakewood, WA; Yancey (Beth) Robertson of Abbeville, SC; Thomas (Ellie) Robertson of Mesa, AZ; 16 grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter. He was predeceased by his grandson Charles Wellman. Memorial services will be held on Sunday, June 12, at the First Presbyterian Church at 3:00 p.m. Donations in lieu of flowers should be made to the Uniform Law Foundation, 211 E. Ontario St., Suite 1300, Chicago, IL 60611.

1934-2005

Edna Wortie Landrum, 70, of Jefferson River Road, died Wednesday April 20, 2005.

A native and life long resident of Jackson County, Mrs. Landrum was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Landrum; father, Thomas Matthews, and a sister, Elizabeth Gearing. Mrs. Landrum was Food Service Supervisor of the Athens Diversion Center and a charter member of Living Waters Worship Center.

Survivors include her mother, Julia Estelle Sorrow, son and wife, Larry and Martha Landrum of Athens; daughters and husbands, Gayle and William Whitfield, Sharon and Tommy Hanson, all of Athens, Dorothy and Phil Golson of Greensboro; sisters, Louise Marlow of Athens, Martha Patrick of Commerce and Diane Compton of Athens; brothers, James Matthews of Jefferson and Herbert Matthews of Commerce; seven grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and Godmother, Mary Bruce.

Funeral Services will be held 11 am Saturday, April 23 at Living Waters Worship Center with Pastors William Whitfield and Mitch Elder officiating. iIntermentwill follow at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 – 9 pm Friday, April 22 at Bernstein Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions may be made to Living Waters Worship Center 430 Bogart-Jefferson Road, Statham GA 30666.

The family will be at the home of Gayle and William Whitfield, 83 Sarah Street, Athens, GA 30607.

Eleanor “Mo Bear” Boe, 82 of 335 Lake Deerfield Road passed away on March 31, 2005.

A native of Santa Monica, California, Mrs. Boe was the daughter of the late Russell and Letha Wolfe Ingram. She was preceded in death by husbands Douglas Cook Woodbury and Barron B. Boe and a son, Douglas Woodbury Boe. Mrs. Boe, affectionally known to her grand children as “MaMa Bear” was a very active volunteer at The Betty Ford Clinic, The Eisenhower Memorial Hospital, The Living Desert Hospital in California and the Courage Center in Minnesota. She was past president of the Path Finders of California, and avid golfer, bridge player, homemaker and member of the Family Worship Center in Danielsville, Ga

Survivors include sons and daughters in law Barron and Annie Boe, Hull; Thomas C. and Robin Boe, Minneapolis, MN; son John Michael Boe, St. Cloud, MN; daughter in law Monica Boe, Honolulu, HI; 10 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11AM Tuesday at the Family Worship Center with Pastor Tommy Cowart officiating. The family will receive friends 6-8 Monday evening at Bernstein.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that contributions be made to the Path Finders of California, 450 S. James Avery Callaham
1922-2004

James Avery Callaham, 320 Camelot Dr. passed away on Sunday May 16, 2004 at his home, surrounded by his loving family.

A native of Belton, South Carolina, Mr. Callaham was the son of the late Pickens and Mabel Katheleen Kelly Callaham. A son, Leonard Callaham also preceded him in death. He was employed with Gulf Oil Corporation as a transport driver and retired after twenty-two years and five months of faithful service. Mr. Callaham was a member of the Shady Grove Baptist Church in Belton, South Carolina.

Survivors include his wife, of forty- eight years, Bessie Mae Leachman Callaham, Athens; daughters Wanda Arnold and Shelby Griffin both of Athens; sons Danny Callaham and Charles Callaham both of Belton, SC; brothers M.C. Callaham and Rufus Callaham both of Belton, SC; sister Sue Estes Skarupa, Greenville, SC; grandchildren Joshua Griffin, Danielle Griffin, Heather Arnold, Angela Callaham; Daniel Callaham, Tony Callaham and Teresa Callaham, 9 great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 2PM Tuesday at the chapel of Bernstein Funeral Home with Rev. Crist Camden officiating. Entombment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 6-8PM Monday at Bernstein Funeral Home.

Vesta Bunn
1909-2004

Vesta Cook Bunn, 94, of Athens died Saturday, May 29, 2004.

A native of Union County, Mrs. Bunn was a daughter of the late John M. and Minnie Scroggs Cook. Her husband, Gerald Bunn, preceded her in death. She was a retired Seamstress with Henson’s Garment Co. and was a member of Young Harris United Methodist Church.

Survivors include two nieces and husbands, Margaret and Roman Cutshaw of Bogart and Betty Jo and Bill Crump of Tucker; one grand nephew Kem Crump and two great grand nieces Kandy and Katie Crump all of Snellville.

Graveside services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 1, 2004 at Evergreen Memorial Park with the Rev. Mike Marsingill officiating. The family request no flowers and that contributions be made to the Young Harris United Methodist Church, 973 Prince Avenue, Athens, GA 30606.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at Bernstein Funeral Home.

Cornelia Wilfong Scanlon
1906-2005
Athens, GA

Cornelia Wilfong Scanlon, of Athens, died on Thursday, February 3, 2005. Born on August 22, 1906, in Newton, North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Walter Whitener Wilfong, Sr., and Ophelia Avery Wilfong. She grew up in Hendersonville, North Carolina, and attended Asheville Normal College. After moving to Detroit in the late 1920s, she began a successful career with General Motors Corporation. Subsequently, she moved to California and worked as an interior designer in the San Francisco Bay area. In 1961 she came to Athens and worked at the University of Georgia’s Department of Landscape Architecture until her retirement in 1976.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Athens and was active in the Women of the Church. She was also a member of the University Women’s Club. She enjoyed bridge and golf, and was a loyal fan of both the football and basketball teams of the University of Georgia.

She is survived by one sister, Elizabeth Wilfong Bolling, of Pensacola, Florida, and one brother, James Quincy Wilfong, Sr., of Athens. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Saturday February 5, at Bernstein Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 pm Sunday, February 6, at the First Presbyterian Church, Athens. iIntermentwill follow in Oconee Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the First Presbyterian Church Endowment Fund, 185 E. Hancock Avenue, Athens, GA 30601.
