He is survived by his wife of fifty years, Ruby M. Looper Taylor, Lawrenceville, GA; son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Grace Bragg, Lawrenceville, GA; grandchildren; Addison Bragg and Nikki Bragg; brother and sister-in-law, Dave and Marthalene Looper, Gainesville, GA; sister-in-law, Virginia Looper, Buford, GA; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and caregiver and special friend, Julie Grafton, Duluth, GA. Mr. Taylor was born April 28, 1920 in Marietta, OK. He was a graduate of Marietta High School in Marietta, OK and attended Oklahoma University where he Majored in Music and Voice. He was a Retired Major from the U. S. Army after twenty-one years of service and was a member of the Duluth American Legion Post 251. He was retired from Battey State Hospital a/k/a Northwest Georgia Regional Hospital as a food service director in Rome, GA. He was a Mason and a member of Buford Masonic Lodge 292 F. & A.M. and was a Shriner and member of the Yaarab Shrine Temple in Atlanta, GA. He was a member of the First Christian Church Disciples of Christ in Rome, GA. Mr. John Acton McSpadden, age 62, of Buford, GA passed away on Sunday, July 10, 2011 after a courageous fifteen-year battle with pancreatic cancer. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Earline McSpadden; and brother, Doug McSpadden. He is survived by his wife of forty-three years, Christi McSpadden, Buford, GA; daughter and son-in-law, Gretchen and Brad Hayward, Buford, GA; son and daughter-in-law, J. T. and Sharon McSpadden, Flowery Branch, GA; grandchildren, Skylar Hayward, Nathan Hayward, Alyssa McSpadden and Kayla McSpadden; sisters and brother-in-law, Margaret Garthe, Michigan and Erma and Bill Evans, Lewisburg, TN; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Mr. McSpadden was born January 30, 1949 in Trumann, AR. He was a 1967 graduate of Vicksburg High School in Vicksburg, MI. He was a U. S. Army Veteran of the Vietnam War. He worked for M.G. Industries and also worked for Graber Industries. He was a former co-owner of Window Wear Direct Co. in Stone Mountain, GA, founder of McSpadden Custom Farming Co. in Vicksburg, MI and was a partner in Just Tubs, LLC in Flowery Branch, GA. He was an avid tennis fan. He was of the Baptist Faith. He was very involved with his children and grandchildren’s sports activities. He will be greatly missed by his family. Mr. Jerry M. Parnell, age 54, of Buford, GA passed away on Friday, July 15, 2011. He is survived by his brother, James Parnell, Dacula, GA; sister, Pat Manning, Loganville, GA; one niece, Jan and Royce Olivet, Dacula, GA; three nephews, Michael Partee, Loganville, GA, Jason Parnell, Lawrenceville, GA and Brandon Parnell, Dacula, GA; two great nieces; two great nephews; aunt, Carolyn Moon; and several cousins. Mrs. Donna Sweat Mace. After a hard-fought battle with cancer, Donna lost her life on July 14, 2011, surrounded by family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Oscar and Ann Sweat. She is survived by her husband of 22 years, Charles Mace; her only daughter and son-in-law, Kelly and Ryan Almond; one grandson, Dylan Almond; and her sister, Sandy Sweat James. After a 35-year career with Wachovia, she retired in 2004 as Vice President in the Trust Department. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held Saturday, July 23, 2011 at 3:00 o’clock P.M. at the First Christian Church, 3495 Sugarloaf Parkway, Lawrenceville, GA.
Mrs. Mary Pernick Devane, age 91, of Buford, GA passed away on Tuesday, July 12, 2011. She was preceded in death by her husband, John F. Devane. She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Jean and Ted Hodge, Buford, GA and Martha and Ed Tobias, Waynesboro, VA; grandchildren, David Tobias, Debbie and John Kozell, Dani and Nick Everett, Ted and Kelly Hodge and Ken and Jen Hodge; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Mrs. Devane was born March 14, 1920 in Pennsylvania. She resided in Moonachie, NJ for over fifty years. She was a retired factory worker from Melnor Industries. She was a member of Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Flowery Branch, GA. He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Randall “Randy” and Marcia Godfrey, Johns Creek, GA and Richard D. “Rick” and Christina Godfrey, Buford, GA; daughter, Judith L. “Judy” Godfrey, Suwanee, GA; grandchildren, Scott and Georgia Godfrey, Meredith Godfrey, Jessica Godfrey Rawlings and husband, Reed Rawlings, Kayli Smith, Mitzi Briggs, Jami Smith and Rick and Alicia Godfrey; four great-grandchildren, Madison Smith, Robbie Briggs, Riley Briggs and Kaden Smith-Rozelle; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Marie and Forest Riddell, Redlands, CA; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Godfrey was born April 29, 1929 in Hale, TX. He was a 1947 graduate of Plainview High School in Plainview, TX, attended Abilene Christian College, and was a 1950 graduate of the University of Tennessee. He was a veteran of the U. S. Navy. During his career, he managed six airports including, Galveston, TX, San Diego, CA, Tampa, FL, Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Orlando, FL and Jacksonville, FL where he retired. He also worked with United Airlines for fifteen years. His hobbies were woodworking, hunting, fishing and photography. He was a member of the Buford Church of Christ. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict where he received a Silver Star and was a member of the Buford American Legion Post 127. He was retired from the U. S. Postal Service having worked in the Doraville Post Office. He was a member of the Buford Lions Club and Sherwood Drugstore Coffee Club. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Buford where he was a member of the Berean Sunday School Class, a founding member of the Silvertone Choir, and a member and former treasurer of the Abundant Life Fellowship. He was a former Sugar Hill City Councilman and an original member of the Volunteer Fire Department for the City of Sugar Hill. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Sugar Hill where he was also a member of the Senior Adult Sunday School Class, Marion Skelton teacher. He enjoyed traveling and camping.
