Dorothy Meeks Ammons

Dorothy Meeks Ammons, 84, of Kernersville, NC, passed away Friday, Jan. 27, 2006 at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston Salem, NC after a short illness. She was born Sept. 30, 1921 to the late Luvester Cumbie and T.F. Meeks. Dorothy was saved, sanctified and filled with the Holy Ghost in 1934. One year later, in 1935, at the age of 14, she started her ministry. She received her Evangelist licenses in 1934 with the Church of God of Prophecy. After her marriage to Edwin Ammons in 1944, the two of them went into full time ministry in the state of Georgia. One year later they moved to South Carolina. Dorothy worked side by side with her husband in pastoral ministry. Also she engaged herself in revivals and pastoral work.
She is survived by one daughter, Wendie Sue Rioux and husband, Bob, of Japan; three sons and daughters-in-law, the Rev. E. Roger Ammons and wife, Alice, of Cleveland, TN, D. Wayne Ammons and wife, Nellie, of Kernersville, NC and the Rev. Ray E. Ammons and wife, Patricia, of Louisville, KY; two sisters, Estelle Gunn of Rutlidge and Ammie Lee Funderburk and husband, Ira, of Lakeworth, Fla.; nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 30 at 11:00 a.m. from the Church of God of Prophecy in Baxley with the Rev. Lester Weldon, the Rev. Dannie Hix and Bishop Fred Fisher officiating. iIntermentfollowed in Memorial Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Terry Ammons, Mike Ammons, David Ammons, Jr., Lawerence Munoz, Thomas Bates and David Shipes.
Musical selections were rendered by Carol Earnhardt, Trish Ammons, the Rev. Donnie Hix, Donald Rouse, Marie Varnadore and Jerry Kersey.
Remembrances may be made to the Church of God of Prophecy, 213 Spruce Street, Baxley, Ga. 31513.
Arrangements were under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.

Rudolph "Buster" Burkett

Rudolph "Buster" Burkett, 78, died Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2006. He was born Sept. 30, 1928. He lived in Surrency with his parents, Jassie Alderman Burkett and Marcus Burkett. Buster attended school in Appling County. After high school, he worked as a laborer/apprentice at Brunswick shipyards, a laborer at Rayonier in Jesup and a farmer until his retirement. Buster did a tour in Korea in the U.S. Army, after his discharge, he assisted his father in the turpentine business. His spiritual experiences included membership at Surrency Grove and Second Pleasant Hill Baptist Churches. He served as a Deacon, Sunday School Teacher and was truly gifted in the area of music. Buster was the last surviving member of the Paramount Gospel Singers, a group, very popular from the 1960s through the 1980s. He married Alfreida Lavern Hayes May 5, 1952.
Buster had a strong personality with strong opinions on almost everything! It is ironic that on the day before he died, he exhibited a humbleness that was totally out-of-character for him. Perhaps it was then that God tempered that strength with humility and paved the way for Buster to come home.
They have four children Ronald, (Jacqulyn), Patricia (Robert), Reginald (Sheryl) and Brian Keith. They also have five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and many many cousins and friends.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Jan. 10 from Second Pleasant Hill Baptist Church at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Vivian Woodruff officiating and Eulogy by Rev. Elijah Jones. iIntermentfollowed in Surrency Grove Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Milus Burkett, Ken Hayes, Henry Johnson, Sim Burkett, Darrell Hayes and Henry Alderman, Sr.
Honorary pallbearers were Deacons of various churches, Pernell Rooks and Rufus Wooten.
Musical selections were rendered by the congregation, "Hold to God's Unchanging Hand, " "There's a Bright Side Somewhere, " and Sheryl Burkett sang, "Two Wings."
Arrangements were under the direction of C.M. Brown Funeral Home.

Alton Louis Covington, Sr.

Alton Louis Covington, Sr., 75, died Monday, Jan. 23, 2006 at Doctor's Hospital in Augusta after a short illness. He was a native of Jeff Davis County but had lived in Appling County most of his life. Covington was a member of Altamaha Baptist Church and was a Veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was preceded in death by his parents, Margaret Louise and A.L. (Pat) Hinson and one brother, John Wesley Covington.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia Ann Herrington Covington of Baxley; three daughters, Shirley Ann (Rod) Miles, Debra Patricia (Monty) Edwards and Linda Louise (Terry) Altman, all of Baxley; two sons, Alton Louis (Donna) Covington, Jr. and Karl Wesley (Pam) Covington, all of Baxley; three brothers, Jessie James (Jim) Covington of Gray, Ralph Milton Covington of Jesup and Rex Hinson Covington of Hazlehurst; 13 grandchildren, Nick Covington, Adam Covington, Crystal Edwards, Julia Edwards, Katelinn Edwards, Casey Altman, Josh Altman, Karl Covington, Kristopher Covington, Roddy Miles, Jessica Miles, John Lucas Nail and Jeremy Nail.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Jan. 26 at 2:00 p.m. from Altamaha Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles Hutcheson and Elder Jerry Lightsey officiating. iIntermentfollowed in the church cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Alton Nickolas Covington, Adam Louis Covington, Joshua Terry Altman, Roddy Miles, Karl Wesley Covington, Kristopher Louis Covington, John Lucas Nail and Keith Price.
Honorary pallbearers were Altamaha Baptist Church Members and all relatives and friends in attendance.
Musical selections were rendered by Kenny Hutcheson and the Altamaha Church Choir.
Arrangements were under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.

Winnie Merle Herrington

Winnie Merle Herrington, 88, died Thursday, Feb. 2, 2006 in the Appling Nursing Home after an extended illness. She was a native and lifelong resident of Appling County and a homemaker. Winnie was born March 3, 1917 to the late Sadie McNeil and Clifford Johnson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Homer Herrington, three daughters, Shirley Herrington, Ludy Herrington and Judy Herrington, and a son, Kenneth Herrington.
She is survived by five daughters, Patricia H. Covington of Baxley, Linda Wynkoop of Banner Elk, NC, Elaine Sikes of Jacksonville, Fla., Janice Sties of Tenn., and Sadie Wright of Fernandina, Fla.; five sons, Pat Herrington of Duluth, Tony Herrington of Baxley, Terry Herrington of Box Springs, Danny Herrington of Baxley and Richard Herrington of Metter; three sisters, Audrey Bradley of Murphyville, Willie C. Reed and Ruth Cooper of Palatka, Fla.; one brother, Rommie Johnson of Milledgeville; 30 grandchildren and 51 great-grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 4 at 2:00 p.m. from the chapel of Swain Funeral Home with the Rev. David Griffin, the Rev. Barry Teutsch and the Rev. Charles Hutcheson officiating. iIntermentfollowed in Zoar Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Grandsons: Alton Covington, Wesley Covington, Michael Hamrick, Alan Hamrick, Noel Herrington, Kyle Herrington, Bryan Herrington, Charles Sikes, Jason Sikes, Jeffery Sikes, Stephen Wright, Wayne Herrington, Stacey Herrington, Clint Herrington, Alan James, Jeffery James, Brandon Sawyer and Codie Sawyer.
Honorary pallbearers were Staff of Appling Nursing Home and all friends and family in attendance.
Musical selections were rendered by Friendship Congregational Christian Church Choir, Cheryl Bryan, Vickie Dyal and a recording of a song written and sung by the late Gene Sorrell.
Arrangements were under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.

Howard Wilson Moody

Howard Wilson Moody, 75, died Monday, Jan. 30, 2006 in the Jeff Davis Hospital. He was born in Appling County to the late Avey Morris and Alvin Wilson Moody. Moody was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church and had 34 years of service with the Teamsters Union.
He is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Harry Wilson and Doris Moody, Alton Vance Moody and Terry James and Sharon Moody, all of Baxley; one sister, Joyce Moody Fowler of Baxley; four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and two nieces and one nephew also survive.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Feb. 2 at 2:00 p.m. from Asbury United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ben DeFore. Glynn Stone and Brian Krafczyk officiating. iIntermentfollowed in the church cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Donnie McLoon, Roger Merchant, Danny Sharpe, John Branch, Robert Roe, Ronnie L. Green, Randy Weaver and Ricky Weaver.
Honorary pallbearers were Trustees of Asbury United Methodist Church, R.L. Green, Buck Sellers, Ralph Ross, J.C. Nester, Martin Hunt, Burley Beasley, Roger Mask, Bill Kicklighter, L.D. Oxendine, Tom Craven, Charlie Schoolcraft, Howard Schrupp, Way Hutchinson, Cecil Weaver, Jimmy Bullard and all friends in attendance.
Musical selections were rendered by Debra Youmans, Keisha Peacock, Brandi Thornton and Tyler Branch.
Arrangements were under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.

Constance (Connie) Jean Motley

Constance (Connie) Jean Motley, 44, died Saturday, January 28, 2006 after a long illness. She was born in Appling County to Beatrice Zinamon Lloyd on March 4, 1962. Connie was the second grandchild of the late Rosie and Claude Zinamon. She loved life. Connie was a great mother, sister and friend.
She is survived by a devoted friend, Alex Dasher of Baxley; three daughters, Tomeka L. Motley of Charlotte, NC, LaKisha S. (Lashuan) NeSmith and Danamarie Thomas of Baxley; her mother, Beatrice Lloyd; her father, Clarence Gaulden of Fla.; two sisters, Linda (Fredrick) Rich of Satellite Beach, Fla. and Sabrina Jackson of Jacksonville, Fla.; six grandchildren, Jacquis Smith, Letavis NeSmith, Michael Reynolds, Jr., Rachel NeSmith, Markyle Reynolds, Demarcus NeSmith; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services were held Friday, Feb. 3 at 1:00 p.m. from First African Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. J.M. Blair officiating. iIntermentfollowed in Morgan Chapel cemetery in Graham.
Active pallbearers were J'mar Davis, Herbert "Peter" Byrd, Marvin Perry, Pedro Bennette and Larry NeSmith, Jr.
Honorary pallbearers were Deacons and Stewarts of various churches.
Flower attendants were Ushers of various churches.
Musical selections were rendered by Peggy Fletcher and Juanita Nails-James.
Arrangements were under the direction of Baxley Funeral Home.

Richard Oliver Rogers

Richard Oliver Rogers, 86, died Monday, Jan. 30, 2006 at Appling HealthCare System after an extended illness. He was a life long resident of Appling County. Richard was a member of First Baptist Church . He was a graduate of Tennessee Military Institute and the University of Georgia. Richard was a veteran of WWII, having served in the United States Army with the rank of Major. He was the former owner and operator of R.E. Jarman and Sons Hardware. Richard was a former chairman and president of Baxley Federal Savings Bank. He was a former mayor of the City of Baxley and active in various other civic and business organizations. Richard was born Aug. 20, 1919 to the late Betty Oliver and Roy Rogers.
He is survived by his wife, Iris Tomlinson Rogers of Baxley; one daughter and son-in-law, Charlotte and Ross Whatley of Cartersville; two sons and daughter-in-law, John J. and Mimi Rogers of St. Simons and Richard O. Rogers, Jr. of Winter Park, Fla.; one sister, Gloria Rogers Goodroe of Pinehurst; and three grandchildren, Jarman Rogers, Ellen Rogers and Jared Whatley also survive.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Feb. 1 at 11:00 a.m. from First Baptist Church of Baxley with the Rev. Jay Meadows officiating. iIntermentfollowed in Omega Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Hollis Crummey, Bayne Eason, Mickey Grainger, Alex Johnson, Greg Kennedy, Wesley Swain, Alvin Tuten and Jared Whatley.
Musical selections were rendered by Jeff Lewis, the Rev. Tommy Jordan and the congregation.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to First Baptist Church Building Fund, 15 North Main St., Baxley, GA 31513 or a charity of the donor's choice.
Arrangements were under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.

Mildred Burke Spell

Mildred Burke Spell, 87, died Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2006 in the Appling HealthCare System after an extended illness. She was a native and life long resident of Appling County. Mrs. Spell was a charter member of Covenant Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Early Spell, and three sons, Earl Spell, Doris Edward Spell and Homer Spell.
She is survived by three daughters and son-in-law, Bobbie Walls and Barbara Ann Fennell, both of Baxley and Jewell and Albert Lightsey of Rock Hill, SC; three sons and daughters-in-law, Wilton and Gerri Spell of Baxley, Redius and Lynette Spell of Alma and Burnice and Brenda Spell of Albany; one sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Wadis Hampton of Baxley; 31 grandchildren, 69 great-grandchildren, 23 great-great-grandchildren, and 23 nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services were held Friday, Feb. 3 at 1:00 p.m. from the Baxley Church of God with Dr. Hugo Hammond and the Rev. Keith Maxwell officiating, and Eulogy by Dale Spell. iIntermentfollowed in Zoar Cemetery.
Active pallbearer were Edward Walls, David Whiteside, Edward Spell, Jr., Edwin Spell, James Kelly Lightsey, Steven Spell, Jason Spell and Brian Spell.
Honorary pallbearers were Buster Hampton, Shirley and Emory Sellers, Staff of Appling Nursing Home, Dr. Garland Martin, Marsha Hubbard, Mr. and Mrs. Holt Sellers, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Herrin, Glenda Crosby and Willa Mae Yarbrough.
Musical selections were rendered by Grandchildren accompanied by David Williams.
Arrangements were under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.

James (J.L. - Jay L) Lee Braddy, Sr.

James (J.L. -Jay L) Lee Braddy, Sr., son of the late Eunice and CB Braddy was born in Surrency on Nov. 10, 1939. He quietly went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2005. He was educated in the public school system in Baxley. At an early age, he moved to Wilmington, DE, where he began his 30-year career at General Motors Corporation. Braddy also worked at the Dorset Condominiums for 20 years. He was a very dedicated worker and also enjoyed talking about his childhood growing up in Baxley. His favorite past time was eating crabs and he could really put them down. He also enjoyed the comfort of his family.
He leaves to cherish a loving wife, Gladys (Carolyn) Braddy; four daughters. Carolyn Braddy of Suitland, MD, Marita Braddy of Beltsville, MD, Sharon (Sherry) Braddy of Wilmington, DE and Likisha Braddy Robinson of New Castle, DE; two sons, James Braddy, Jr. of Jessup, MD and Marc Wright of Newark, DE; one daughter-in-law, Adrienne Wright; step-children, Gene Smith and Mary Myers of Baxley and Leisha Nails of McBee, SC; grandchildren, Nikia Braddy of Wilmington, DE, Anwar and Asphen Foster of Suitland, MD, Joseph Jr. and Jasmine Robinson of New Castle, DE, Casey and Erin Myers of McBee, SC, Eric Williams and Tyri Russell of Baxley, Ta-Ron Smith of Columbus, Shanekqua and Marchelle Wright of Newark, DE; a great-grandchild, Amoire Braddy of Wilmington, DE; two "granddogs, " Casey Braddy and Lexy Myers; siblings, Sara Johnson, Willie Jean Troupe, Juanita Scott, Cheryl and Larry Braddy, Latrisha Faye Braddy of Baxley, Dora Mae and James Surrison of SC, Lula and Tommy Harrison of Fla., Connell and Diane Braddy of Baxley; a special aunt and uncle, Ethel and Waymen Wilcox of Surrency; oldest living aunt, Dora of SC; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services were held Saturday, at 1:00 p.m. from Harpers Chapel United Methodist Church in Baxley.
Local arrangements were under the direction of Baxley Funeral Home.
