Mattie Carter
Mattie Carter, 81, died March 12, 2005. She was born to the late Ida and Gold Brown of Madison (Morgan County) on Dec. 17, 1924. Mattie attended Elliot School in Veals Quarters. She was a faithful member of St. Paul Church of God in Christ.
At an early age she met and married
Walter Carter, Sr., to this union was born 13 children.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Carter, Sr., her son and daughter-in-law, Walter Carter, Jr. and Annie Ruth Carter.
She is survived by her children, Frances (James) Powell of West Palm Beach, Fla., Cleveland (Georgia) Carter, Mamie Sumner, Pastor James F. (Joyce) Carter, Charles (Brenda) Carter of Baxley, Stella (Freddy) Burnett, Rutha (Anthony) Boggs of Brunswick, Ann (Terry) NeSmith, Helen Carter, Larry (Phillis) Carter, Lennie (Reatha M.) Carter, Lee Norris (Shirley) Carter, Bart (Christine) Roberson, all of Baxley, Elder and Mrs. Arthur Robinson of Tifton; two sisters, Willie P. (James) Copeland and Lizzie M. Paulk; one brother, Freddy Brown; one son-in-law, Marvin Sumner; three brothers-in-law, three sisters-in-law; three God-daughters; one aunt; 64 grandchildren, 96 great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, special church friend, Josie Wilson; and a community of sorrowing friends.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Mar. 16 at 1:00 p.m. from St. Paul Church of God in Christ withthe Rev. James F. Carter and Dr. M.L. Jackson officiating. iIntermentfollowed in Rachel Cemetery.

James Robert "J.R." Weekley
James Robert "J.R." Weekley, 61, died Wednesday, Mar. 16, 2005 at his residence after an extended illness. He was born Dec. 19, 1943. J.R. was a native of Pace, Fla., but had resided in Baxley for the past 17 years. He was a retired instrument technician and a deacon of the Reorganized Church of Latter Day Saints in Milton, Fla. J.R. was preceded in death by his father, Robert Weekley and brother, Johnny Weekley.
He is survived by his wife, Betty J. Weekley of Baxley; five daughters, Kim Touchton, Trish Beck, both of Pace, Fla., Sheri Jernigan, Kelly Cannon, both of Milton, Fla., Jackie Zappitella of Iva, SC; two sons, Billy Delee of Middleburg, Fla. and Jay Kimmons of Baxley; mother, Gena Weekley of Pace, Fla.; one sister, Ann Deen of Pace, Fla.; two brothers, Jerry Weekley of Pace, Fla. and Gary Weekley of Milton, Fla.; 24 grandchildren and two great grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services were held Sat., Mar. 19 at 3:00 p.m. from Altamaha Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles Hutcheson officiating. iIntermentfollowed in the church cemetery.

Jerry L. Collins
Jerry L. Collins, 57, died Wednesday, March 16, 2005 in the Appling HealthCare System. He was a native of Charlotte, NC and had lived in Baxley for the past 22 years. Jerry served in the United States Army and was a veteran of the Vietnam Conflict and he also served in the United States Navy on the USS Kenneth D. Bailey. Jerry was an electrician and had previously been employed with Rayonier. He attended Oak Grove Church of God. Jerry was the son of the late Croftard Collins and the late Lucille Gay Collins.
He is survived by his wife, Alvada Collins of Baxley; three daughters and sons-in-law, DeAnna and Jamie Sharpe of Baxley, Lora Lynn and Richard Hobby of Baxley, Jeri Rice and Donnie of Milton, Fla.; three sons and a daughter-in-law, Jerry Collins, Jr. of Milton, Fla., Markus Collins of Milton, Fla. and Quincey S. and Tanya Allen of Baxley; four brothers, Jackie Collins of Moultrie, Hobert Collins of Manchester, TN, Herbert Collins of Pleasant Hill, LA and Frank Collins of Deckard, TN; 13 grandchildren and two great grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services were held Saturday, March 19 at 2:00 p.m. from the chapel of David E. Miles Funeral Home with the Rev. Dennis Bryant, the Rev. Charles Hutcheson and the Rev. Chip Woodruff officiating. iIntermentfollowed in Wesley Chapel Church cemetery in Bacon County with Military Rites.

Mary Lou Pope Dixon
Mary Lou Pope Dixon, 91, of Bristol, died Wednesday, March 16, 2005 at Appling HealthCare System after an extended illness. She was a native of Montgomery County but had lived in Appling County for past 85 years. Mrs. Dixon was a member of Piney Grove Free Will Baptist Church for 73 years. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary, Adult Sunday School Class and the Young at Heart. Mrs. Dixon was known for her quilting abilities and was a great cook. She was preceded in death by her husband, T.I.Dixon. Mrs. Dixon was born Nov. 4, 1913 to the late William Jackson Pope and the late Minnie Rilla Brady Pope.
She is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Sue Nell and William Holley of Baxley, Dartha "Dot" and John Elbert Tillman of Surrency and Faye and Wayne Doke of Brunswick; three sons and daughters-in-law, James Robert Dixon of Baxley, M.A. and Esther Dixon and Charles H. and Wanda Dixon, all of Bristol; grandchildren, John Alan Tillman, Anthony Tillman, Christopher Tillman, Melvin Alex Dixon III, Jeffery Doke, Gregory Doke and Lisa Chancey; great grandchildren, Matthew Tillman, Megan Tillman, Madison Michele Chancey; and two step-great grandchildren, Breanna and Brittany.

Reda M. Carter
Reda M. Carter, 63, died Thursday, March 17, 2005 in the Appling HealthCare System after a brief illness. She was born Aug. 3, 1941 and was a native and life long resident of Appling County. Mrs. Carter was a member of Midway Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, George W. Carter and Lucille Holcomb Carter and a sister, Elouise Williamson.
She is survived by a sister, Joyce Pearce of Surrency; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Colvin and Sandy Carter and Curtis and Ann Carter, all of Baxley; special grandchildren, Sharon, Misty, Kayla, Carter, Aaron, Eric, Curtis, Toby, Lynn and Christina; and several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services were held Sunday, March 20 at 3:00 p.m. from Midway Baptist Church with the Rev. Wayne Williamson and the Rev. Brian Brazzell officiating. iIntermentfollowed in Ten Mile Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

Girleaner Hudson Wright
Girleaner Hudson Wright, 58, died Saturday, March 5, 2005. She was born Feb. 19, 1947 to the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hudson, Sr. of Baxley. On Dec. 19, 1963, Girleaner was married
to Willie Earl Wright, Sr. During their marriage to this union were born four sons, Master Sergeant Johnathan Maurice Wright (Veronica) of San Antonio, TX; Willie Earl Wright, Jr. (Selba) of Camden, AR; Dedrick Y. Wright of Atlanta; and Johann Strauss Wright of San Antonio, TX; one step-son, Breman Wright of Nashville.
She is survived by eight brothers and sisters, Ulysess Hudson (Grace) of Fayetteville, NC, Early Lee Hudson of Baxley, Henry Hudson, Jr. (Shirley) of Atlanta, Harold Hudson, Sr. of Buffalo, NY, Rose Ann Hudson of Chicago, IL, Shirley Hudson Harris (Robert) of Baxley, Annette Hudson of Baxley and Elder Lilian Hudson of Atlanta; eight grandchildren, Levell Nolan, Akelia Quantavious, Demetrius, Dedrick, Travon, Johann Strauss, Jr. and A'deidra Wright; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and neighbors survive.

Bonnie McCall Black
Bonnie McCall Black, 72, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2005 in the Appling HealthCare System after an extended illness. She was a native and life long resident of Appling County. Mrs. Black was a member of Red Oak Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Dorris Black. Mrs. Black was born July 7, 1932 to the late John Hampton McCall and the late Katherine Rebecca O'Quinn McCall.
Survivors include seven daughters and sons-in-law, Evelyn Turner of Alma, Jean (Sam) Orvin, Betty (Curtis) Taylor, Judy (Dale) Lynch, Elaine Black and Ellen Black, all of Baxley and Brenda (Herty) Nail of Waycross; three sons and daughters-in-law, Eddie (Elwanda) Black of Orange Park, Fla., David (Sue) Black of Baxley and Dewayne (Marcia) Black of Katy, TX; one sister, Maudina Phelps of Baxley; two brothers, Arleese McCall and Willie McCall, both of Baxley; 16 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Meredith "Bo" Smith
Meredith "Bo" Smith, 56, of Nashville, passed away Thursday, Feb. 24, 2005 in Nashville. He was born Nov. 27, 1948. Bo was the son of Savannah physician and former county coroner, Dr. Harold M. Smith and his wife, Madelyn. He grew up in Savannah and attended Savannah High School. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from Armstrong State College and a Masters of Arts degree in Healthcare Administration from Central Michigan University. He was a member of the American College of American Healthcare Executives.
From 1976 until the present, Bo worked as a nursing home and hospital administrator in Georgia, South Carolina, and Tennessee. He began his career as the assistant administrator at Chatham Nursing Home (now Riverview Health and Rehabilitation Center, Inc.) Bo went on to serve as Chief Executive Officer of Appling HealthCare System in Baxley, CEO of Barnwell County Hospital in Barnwell, South Carolina, CEO of Dodge County Hospital in Eastman, CEO of the Cumberland River Hospital in Celina, Tennessee and most recently, CEO of the Berrien County Hospital.
Active in his field of rural healthcare, Bo gave tirelessly of his time and talents to professional organizations. He was a former member of the Board of Trustees for the Georgia Alliance of Community Hospitals, former chairperson of the Georgia Hospital Association Long Term Care Council and a former member of the Department of Medical Assistance Nursing Home Advisory Council. At the time of his death, Smith was chairman of the Georgia Hospital Association Council on Small and Rural Hospitals, a member of the Department of Community Health Office of Rural Health Advisory Board, the Blue Cross Blue Shield Hospital Advisory Council, the Georgia Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and the Georgia Hospital Association Board of Directors.
Ad avid hunter and fisherman, Bo was a former member of the Pope Hunting Club in South Carolina and enjoyed traveling to sporting destinations from Alaska to Montana. Bo was also an active member of Rotary International.
He is survived by his wife, Janet Myers Smith of Nashville; two daughters, Meredith Lynne Smith of Jackson and Joan Jensen of St. Simon's Island; one son, Brad Jensen of Savannah; one sister, Suzanne Smith Phillips and husband, Dr. John A. Phillips, Jr. of Columbus; one sister-in-law, Gladys Canada Smith of Union Hall, VA; and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 28 at Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel with the Rev. Julian Griner officiating. Burial followed in the Greenwich Section of Bonaventure Cemetery.

James Evans Dixon
James Evans Dixon, 76, of Surrency, passed away Thursday, Feb. 24, 2005 at Bacon County Hospital after an extended illness. He was a native and life long resident of Appling County. Mr. Dixon was a retired farmer and mechanic. He was born Sept. 28, 1928 to the late Lander Dixon and to the late Nancy Lightsey Dixon. He was preceded in death by his wife, Melba Peacock Dixon.
He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Lavay and Terry Davis of Surrency; one granddaughter, Misti Baxley of Baxley; one grandson, Kyle Perry of Surrency; and a great granddaughter, Hannah Tyre of Baxley.
Funeral services were held at 4:00 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 27 from Swain Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Carlton Rowell and the Rev. Martha Beecher officiating. iIntermentfollowed in Memorial Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery.
