Dorothy "Bootsie" Dyal

Dorothy "Bootsie" Dyal of Jacksonville Beach, Florida, died February 22 at St. Luke's Hospital. She was born May 17, 1918, in St. Joseph, Missouri. Mrs. Dyal was a graduate of Sacred Heart Academy in St. Joseph. She lived most of her life in Baxley. She received her undergraduate and master's degrees from Georgia Southern College. Mrs. Dyal taught kindergarten for many years, and after retiring from teaching, she moved to Lavonia, where she lived many happy years on Lake Hartwell. She was a Red Cross volunteer and active in the League of Women's Voters. She was a devoted parishioner at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Jacksonville Beach, Florida.
She is survived by her four daughters, Mary Ann Dyal, Katy Campbell (Johnie), Margaret Dyal, and Sharon Dyal; two beloved grandchildren, Laurie Campbell and Maggie (Travis) Roose, and one great-granddaughter, Logan Roose.
A mass to celebrate her life was held February 26 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Jacksonville Beach. A memorial service will be held in Baxley at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the American Red Cross or any services for children.

Ovedia Reynolds Johnson

Ovedia Reynolds Johnson, 81, passed away Friday, Feb. 25, 2005 at her residence after an extended illness. She was a life long resident of Appling County and a member of Altamaha Baptist Church. Mrs. Johnson was born August 20, 1923 to the late Orlanda Chester Reynolds and the late Gertrude Rentz Reynolds. She was the widow of James Hubert Johnson.
She is survived by four daughters, Wilma (Richard) Scarborough, Linda (Buddy) Wilkerson, Beth (Johnny) Howard, all of Baxley and Gail (Revis) Clary of Odum; three sons, J.W. (Carlene) Johnson of Soddy Daisy, TN, Kenneth (Bonnie) Johnson of Hazlehurst and Timothy Johnson of Atlanta; two sisters, Ophelia Reynolds of Baxley and Edna Hardee of Columbus; one brother, Martin Reynolds of Baxley; 26 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services were held Sunday, Feb. 27 at 2:00 p.m. from the chapel of Swain Funeral Home with the Rev. Charles Hutcheson and the Rev. Ben DeFore officiating. iIntermentfollowed in Melton's Chapel Methodist Church Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Grandsons: Mike Johnson, Mark Johnson, Eddie Clary, Archie Clary, Matt Johnson, Charlie Klughart, Joshua Wilkerson and Jonathan Klughart.
Honorary pallbearers were members of Altamaha Baptist Church.
Musical selections were rendered by Luke Johnson, Regina McDevitt, Nancy Johnson and Mark Johnson.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.

Thelma Burke O'Quinn

Thelma Burke O'Quinn, 73, died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2005 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Savannah after an extended illness. She was a life long resident of Appling County. Mrs. O'Quinn was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Waycross. She was a retired nurse with Appling HealthCare System. Thelma wrote poetry and articles for The Baxley News-Banner. She was a retired co-owner of O'Quinn's Nursery in Surrency. Mrs. O'Quinn was born March 10, 1931 to the late Dave Burke and the late Lessie Eason Burke.
Survivors include her husband, Herbert E. (Gene) O'Quinn of Surrency; four sons and daughters-in-law, David and Debbie O'Quinn, Charles and Sheila O'Quinn, all of Surrency, Teddy and Melinda O'Quinn and Ronnie and Renee' O'Quinn, all of Baxley; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra and Henry Padgett of Baxley and Tammy and Bob Overstreet of Jacksonville, Fla.; one sister, Anna Lee Lightsey of Baxley; one brother and sister-in-law, Dennis and Bettie Burke of Jesup; 16 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Feb. 23 at 2:00 p.m. from the chapel of Swain Funeral Home with pastor Barry Mahorney and the Rev. James Carter officiating. iIntermentfollowed in the Antioch Congregational Christian Church Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Grandsons: Randy O'Quinn, Troy O'Quinn, Jason Padgett, Chris O'Quinn, Clay Delk, Brandon Johnson and Reese O'Quinn.
Honorary pallbearers were all family and friends attending the funeral service.
Musical selections were rendered by Jennifer Davis, Karen Davis, Sheila Kennedy and Melanie Teston.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.

Jimmy C. Williams

Jimmy C. Williams, 63, passed away Thursday, Feb. 24, 2005 at his residence after a brief illness. He was a native of Appling County and had lived in Waycross for many years, before moving back in 1999. Jimmy was a member of Crosby Chapel United Methodist Church. He was born May 30, 1941 to the late Roscoe B. Williams and the late Sadie Crosby Williams.
He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Carole and Gary LeVar of Valdosta; two granddaughters, Chelsey LeVar and Ashley LeVar, both of Valdosta; two brothers, Donald Williams of Bossier City, LA and Richie Williams of Baxley.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 26 at 3:00 p.m. from the Chapel of Swain Funeral Home with the Rev. Creig Smith officiating. iIntermentfollowed in Crosby Chapel Methodist Church Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Randy Livingston, Bobby Mathews, Jeffrey Simmons, Jimmy White, Stacey Hutchinson and Stacey Edwards.
Musical selections were rendered by Sandra Smith.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.

Ora Lee Sellers

Ora Lee Sellers, 80, died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2005 in the Appling Convalescent Center after an extended illness. She was a life long resident of Appling County and was a member of Church of God. Mrs. Sellers was born May 3, 1924 to the late Wildon Rentz and Myrtice Herndon Rentz.
Survivors include her husband, Leonard Sellers of Baxley; three step-daughters, Sara Leyva of Baxley, Patricia Barber of Baxley and Lavern Blanton of Brunswick; two step-sons, Jackson Leonard Sellers of Brunswick and James Sellers of Baxley; four sisters; three brothers; and step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 24 at 2:00 p.m. from the chapel of Swain Funeral Home with the Rev. Barry Teutsch officiating. iIntermentfollowed in Thompson Family cemetery in Toombs County.
Active pallbearers and Honorary pallbearers were staff of Appling Convalescent Center, Dr. Orlando Fernando and friends.
Musical selections were rendered by Vickie Dyal, Cheryl Johnson and Rhonda Johnson.
Arrangements were under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.

Jarman Lynn

Jarman Lynn, 80, of Dallas, died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2005. He worked as a chef for many restaurants before retirement. Lynn was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during WWII and the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Mt. Olivet Baptist Church in Acworth.
Survivors include his wife, Jane Lynn of Dallas; two daughters, Sheila Walker of Baxley and Diane Smith of California; two sons, Jarvis and Henry Lynn, both of Baxley; four sisters, Mickey Hesters of Baxley, Amy Davenport of Hazlehurst, Beulah Williams of Augusta and Camille Kimball of Baxley; 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Monday from Winkenhofer Pine Ridge Funeral Home in Kennesaw with the Rev. Matt Sams and the Rev. Larry Willaims officiating. Burial followed in Pine Ridge Memorial Park Cemetery.
Miles Funeral Home in Hazlehurst was in charge of local announcement.

Annie Ford

Annie Ford, 69, died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2004 in Appling HealthCare System after a brief illness. She was a native of Pasquotank County, NC and had lived in Appling County for the past 17 years. She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church and a homemaker. Mrs. Ford was born April 25, 1935 to the late Ira Holland Rice and the late Annie Gertrude Morton Rice.
She is survived by two daughters, Diana S. (Wendell) Cole of Ft. Pierce, Fla. and Candace A. (Curtis) Dykes of Fitzgerald; four sons, Dennis R. (Toni) Senters of Mechanicsville, Virginia, Richard L. (Mary) Senters and Donald H. Senters, all of Baxley and Gregory C. (Malinda) Senters of Tifton; eight grandchildren, Heather Clegg, Chad Senters, Terry Senters, Matthew Senters, Daniel Senters, Shawn Senters, Sarah Senters, Connor Senters and one niece, Carol Ann Spenyovics.
Funeral services were held Sunday, Jan. 2 at 2:00 p.m. from Bethel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Julian Tucker and the Rev. Ken Banker officiating. Eulogy given by Gregory Senters. iIntermentfollowed in the church cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Matthew Senters, Daniel Senters, Chad Senters, Terry Senters, Shawn Senters, William Clegg and Jodie Spenyovics.
Honorary pallbearers were Dr. Teresa Cezar, Dr. Akhil Baranwal, Dr. Khalid Maqsood, Roy and Sue Starling, Stan Smith and Sandra Sasser.
Musical selections were rendered by Doyle and Annie Ruth Tillman, Chasity Saunders and Pat Tippett.
Arrangements were under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.

Carlton Beckworth

Carlton Beckworth, 89, of Jefferson, NC, died Thursday, Dec. 23, 2004 at AMH Segraves Care Center. He was preceded in death by his wife, Maxie Roberts Beckworth of Jefferson. Beckworth was born in Baxley, July 5, 1915 to James Kinion Beckworth and Dora Mason Beckworth.
He is survived by two sons, Lee Beckworth of Jefferson and Tim Beckworth of Chantilly Virginia; four grandchildren, Josh, Jessica, Elizabeth and Sarah; one sister, Pauline Beckworth of Baxley; one sister-in-law, Kathryn Neilsen of Laurel Springs; and several nieces and nephews survive.
Funeral services were held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 26 from Laurel Springs Baptist Church with the Rev. A.B. Weaver and the Rev. Dana Hines officiating. Burial followed in Laurel Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.
Memorials made be made to Ashe County Education Endowment Fund, Ashe County Board of Education, Jefferson, North Carolina.
Boone Family Funeral Home of Jefferson, North Carolina was in charge of the arrangements.

Janice Sapp Carter

Janice Sapp Carter, 59, of Jones County, died Friday, Dec. 31, 2004 in a local hospital. Mrs. Carter was born in Baxley on May 8, 1945 to the late Frances Sapp and Susie Reynolds Sapp and and had lived in Jones County for the past twenty-nine years. She was a homemaker and was a member of First Baptist Church of Baxley.
She is survived by her husband, Lawton Carter of Jones County; three daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon and Joseph Gantt of Thomasville, Melissa and Kenneth Sikes of Cochran and Lisa and Michael Thompson of Jones County; three sisters, Ann Braswell of Macon, Carolyn Surrency of Brunswick and Jackie Surrency of Eastman; one brother, Troy Sapp of Douglas; and nine grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 3 at 2:00 p.m. from Bridges Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. James Harrison and the Rev. Glenn Cranford officiating. Burial followed at Cedar Ridge cemetery in Gray.
Bridges Funeral Home in Gray was in charge of arrangements.

Fannie Mae Crosby

Fannie Mae Crosby, 86, died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2004 in the Appling Convalescent Center after a long illness. She was born Oct. 23, 1918 in Appling County and had resided here all of her life. She was a homemaker and was a member of Surrency Freewill Baptist Church. Mrs. Crosby was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Ivy Crosby and three sons, David, Lanis and J.C. Crosby. She was the daughter of the late F.M. "Babe" Martin and the late Lillie Mae Green Martin.
She is survived by six daughters and sons-in-law, Mildred and David Williams of Surrency, Burnice Umphenour of Cummings, Alice and Garland McGuirt of Fernandina, Fla., Fay and Fred Schwegel of Tucker, Kathye and Dave Bretz of Zachary, LA and Bobbie Bledsoe of Daytona Beach, Fla.; one son and daughter-in-law, Mitch and Robin Crosby of Baxley; one brother, Ira Martin of Baxley; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services were held Friday, Dec. 31 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of David E. Miles Funeral Home with the Rev. Jay Meadows and the Rev. Carlton Rowell officiating. iIntermentfollowed in Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Musical selections were rendered by Tommy Jordan and Claire Tanner.
Arrangements were under the direction of David E. Miles Funeral Home.

Edith Long Griffis

Edith Long Griffis, 62, of Odum, died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2004 after an extended illness. The Wayne County native was a member of Ritch Missionary Baptist Church and a homemaker.
Survivors are her husband of 44 years, Colvin Griffis; a daughter and son-in-law, Pam and Tom Kinchen of Screven; three sons and daughters-in-law, Matt and Jan Griffis and Tim and Emily Griffis, both of Baxley and Drew and Anslee Griffis of Odum; her mother, Jeanette Long of Douglas; one sister and brother-in-law, Janet and William Claxton of Douglas; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Gordon and Pat Long of Jesup and David and Jackie Long of Douglas; seven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews survive.
Funeral services were held 2:00 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 30 from Ritch Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Larry Massey and the Rev. Mark Ledbetter officiating. iIntermentfollowed in Big Creek Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Devin Long, Armon Griffis, Greg Griffis, Franklin Denison, Don Griffis, and Paul Graham.
Honorary pallbearers were Deacons of Ritch Baptist Church, Lonell Wright, Bobby Devereaux, Bob Kimbrel, Hubert Hart, Charles Burch, Aubrey Griffis, the Rev. Ronnie Litton, Robert Murray, Frank Wright, J.T. O'Quinn, Kenny Williamson, Franklin Burch, Hazel Jones and John Graham.
The Rinehart and Sons Funeral Home of Jesup was in charge of the arrangements.
