Charlie Lee Crunkleton

Charlie Lee Crunkleton, 58, died Saturday, Dec. 25, 2004 at his home in Alma after a long illness. He was a native of Appling County and had resided in Baxley until moving to Alma three months ago. He was a construction worker and truck driver and have previously been employed with Thrift Construction Company. He was also a self-employed repairman for washer and dryers in Baxley. Crunkleton was the son of the late T.G. Crunkleton and the late Lucille Martin Crunkleton.
He is survived by two sisters, Susan Wimberly of Baxley and Jo Ann Varnadore of the Bickley Community in Bacon County; one brother, George Crunkleton of Blackshear; one son, Charlie Sysma of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; one half-sister, Betty Jean Malery of Vidalia; a special friend and companion of 16 years, Linda Skipper of Alma; several grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.
Memorial services were held Tuesday, Dec. 28, at 11:00 a.m. from David E. Miles Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Larry Nichols officiating.
Musical selections were rendered by the Rev. Larry Nichols and his wife, Kathy Nichols.
Arrangements were under the direction of David E. Miles Funeral Home.

Bonnie Hudson Mosley

Bonnie Hudson Mosley, 75, of Brunswick, died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2004 at the local hospital. A native of Appling County, she had made her home in Glynn County for 50 years. Mrs. Mosley formerly owned and operated Bonnie's Alterations and Design in Brunswick and was a member of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
Surviving are eight daughters, Joyce Carter, Wanda Weldon, Melba Kelly and Donna Parker, all of Brunswick, Pat Witt of McAllen, TX, Barbara Ferretti of Westchester, PA, Jessie Dixon of Waycross, Saundra Clark of Kingsland; two sons, Jimmy Hudson (Ann) of Waycross and Tony Padgett (Karen) of Brunswick; 30 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, James Wycliff Meades and Nathan Mosley, a son, Curtis Jerry Hudson, two grandchildren, Doug Turner and Latasha Carter and son-in-law, Harry Osbin Carter.
The funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, Dec. 31 from Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. H.E. Wheatly and the Rev. Paul Weldon officiating. Burial followed in Palmetto Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Darrell Dixon, Zachary Clark, Jacob Clark, Shane Hudson, Shawn Hudson, Steven Coleman, Neal Weldon, Jr. and Joshua Payton Proffitt.
Honorary pallbearers were Jay Parker, Jr., Robert E. Clark, Wallace D. Dixon, Sr., Neal Weldon, Sr, Charlie Ferretti and Emmett Witt.
Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Association, 3213 Hampton Ave., Brunswick, GA 31520.
Arrangements were under the direction of Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home.

Nettie Mae Wilcox

Nettie Mae Wilcox, 92, of Nicholls, died Tuesday Morning, Dec. 28, 2004 at the Appling County Hospital after a short illness. She was a native of Jeff Davis County, but had lived in Nicholls most of her life. Mrs. Wilcox was daughter of the late Marion Cothern and Mae Quinn Cothern and was also preceded in death by her husband, Hoke S. Wilcox, a son, Robert Wilcox and several brothers and sisters.
She was a member of Mims Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Hoke Leroy Wilcox, Sr. and Joyce of Lake City, Fla.; three daughters, Betty Lou Coleman and husband, Travis of Griffin, June Marie Craft and husband, Milton of Pensacola, Fla. and Shirley Mae Aki and husband, Sam of Seattle, WA; one daughter-in-law, Joann Wilcox of Brandon, Fla.; one sister, Maxine Stokes of Webster, Fla.; also 15 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren and nine great-great grandchildren survive.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 1 at 10:00 a.m. at Mims Baptist Church with the Rev. Travis Coleman, Jr. and Eulogy by Eddie Lance. iIntermentfollowed in the church cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Milton, Benjamin, Ronald and Andrew Craft, David and Richard Coleman, Hoke Leroy Wilcox, Jr. and Paul Lance.
Honorary pallbearers were all in attendance.
Crosby Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Ivy Jimmie Thomas

Ivy Jimmie Thomas, 71, died Monday, Dec. 27, 2004. He was born Jan. 29, 1933 in Tison, Tattnall County. He is the son of Madie Berry Thomas and the late Leo "Buster" Thomas. At the age of seven, he along with his parents moved to Appling County. Jimmie as he was affectionately called was educated in the schools of Appling County, in 1954 upon completing his secondary education, he was drafted into the United States Army. He married Amenzerolee Hill of Hazlehurst and was the proud father of two sons, Gregory Dewitt and Wilson Bernard. During his years in the military, Jimmie was stationed in Korea, Germany and Vietnam, completing two tours of duty at the height of the Vietnam War. His commanding officers quickly recognized his outstanding leadership abilities as a result eventually promoted to headquarters company first sergeant. Other achievements include Sky Marshall, attache carrier for the United States State Department, and Non-Commissioned Officer In Charge (NCOIC) of all 54 firing ranges at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. He retired from the Army in 1979 having achieved the rank of Sergeant-Major with 23-1/2 years of active duty.
In 1976, he received his Federal Communications Commission radio broadcast operator license. He began his second career as a disc jockey and radio personality at the James Brown Radio Station in Augusta. He interviewed many famous musicians, emceed live concerts and shared his love of good music with thousands of listeners.
Jimmie was baptized at an early age and joined Second Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Surrency under the pastorship of Moderator D.E. Kelley. Upon his retirement from the military he served in many capacities in his church as usher, Sunday School Teacher, and deacon and for many years served as chairman on the deacon board.
Being a civic-minded individual, Jimmie returned to his roots to Surrency and served diligently as a sterling example of an upright man in his community. He proudly served as president of the Appling County Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and organizer of the Appling County parade and commemoration of Martin Luther King Jr., Holiday, member of the Appling County Hospital Authority, member of the Surrency City Council, member of the American Legion, and president of Berry Family Reunion. He was instrumental in establishing the Surrency Neighborhood Watch Association working with other concerned citizens to make Surrency a drug-free, violence-free and crime-free community.
He wanted to improve the lives of others and worked tirelessly to secure federal, state and local assistance for the elderly, the impoverished and the disadvantaged. One of Jimmie's favorite activities was watching movies and his relatives were all well aware of his love of cars. he knew the names and options of all the latest models both foreign and domestic.
Upon the passing of his father in 1990, he welcomed his mother into his home and devoted himself to her care and well-being. Jimmie was enormously proud of his sons and delighted in their accomplishments.
He is survived by his wife, Amenzerolee "Pennye" Thomas; his mother, Madie Berry Thomas; two sons, Gregory Dewitt Thomas of Atlanta and Wilson Bernard Thomas of Apopka, Fla. and a host of sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services were held Friday, Dec. 31 at 12:00 noon from Zachariah Missionary Baptist Church in Glennville with Elijah Jones officiating. iIntermentfollowed in Hill Memorial Garden in Hazlehurst.
Musical selections were rendered by organist Kenneth Woodruff and choir.
Active pallbearers were Gregory D. Thomas, Wilson B. Thomas, Frank Givens, Thomas Woodruff, Otis Tippins, Reuben Kirby, Richard Copeland and Henry Alderman, Jr.
Honorary pallbearers were Surrency City Council, Appling County Hospital Authority, Appling County NAACP and Deacons of Second Pleasant Hill Church and Legionnaires.
The arrangements were under the direction of Baxley Funeral Home.

Barbara Jo Jarrell Shipes

Barbara Jo Jarrell Shipes, 59, died Thursday, Dec. 23, 2004 at Southeast Georgia Health System in Brunswick after an extended illness. A native of Jacksonville, Fla., she had lived in Appling County for most of her life. She was employed with the Appling General Hospital for 32 years prior to her retirement. She was born Sept. 7, 1945. Barbara Jo was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Shipes, brother, Johnny Jarrell and parents, James Jarrell Sr. and Jacqueline Ross Jarrell.
She is survived by one sister, Jannette (Hugh) Howard of Baxley; two brothers, James Jarrell Jr. of Springfield and Jerry (Debbie) Jarrell of Eden; and a host of nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 27 at 2:00 p.m. at Sandhill Creek Freewill Baptist Church with the Rev. Allen Carter and the Rev. Gary Page officiating. iIntermentfollowed in Pleasant Grove Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Wadis Shipes, Jeff Fariss, David Shipes, Jimmy Shipes, Edward Pearce, M.C. Leggett and Bobby Shipes.
Honorary pallbearers were the Staff of Appling Convalescent Center, Staff of Appling HealthCare System and Members of Sandhill Creek Freewill Baptist Church.
Musical selections were rendered by Sandhill Creek Freewill Baptist Church Choir accompanied by June Cauley.
Arrangements were under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.

Mildred Runels Gilbert

Mildred Runels Gilbert, 90, died Sunday, Nov. 28, 2004 in the Appling Convalescent Center. She was born Dec. 19, 1913 in Heard County and had resided in Baxley since 1959. Mrs. Gilbert was retired from the Georgia Baptist Children's Home of Baxley and was a member of Phillipi Baptist Church, where she served as the pianist. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Will Gilbert. She was the daughter of the late William and the late Nancy Runels.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth and Margaret Gilbert and Vaughn and Nancy Gilbert, all of Baxley; grandchildren, Linda Stevens of Hinesville, Lois and Don Padrick of Hinesville, Sheri and Matt Bragg of Brunswick and Gary Gilbert of Baxley; four great grandchildren, Staci Stevens, Mindi Padrick, Kristi Padrick, all of Hinesville and Madison Bragg of Brunswick; one great-great grandson, Jayden Padrick of Hinesville.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Nov. 30 at 4:00 p.m. in the chapel of David E. Miles Funeral Home with the Rev. Darrell Quinn and the Rev. Lonnie Weaver officiating and Eulogy was given by her granddaughter, Sheri Bragg. iIntermentfollowed in the Mt. Vernon Church cemetery in Baxley.
Active pallbearers were Gary Gilbert, Don Padrick, Matt Bragg, Al Woodle, Harrell Lynch and John Carden.
Honorary pallbearers were Ross Weaver, Carroll Weaver, Joe Crapps, Lucy Hutcheson, Florence Hutcheson, Martha Fletcher, Kim Willoughby, Janie Britt, Lottie Johnson, Rilla Beck and members of the Adult Sunday School Class of Phillipi Baptist Church.
Musical selections were rendered by the Rev. Clint Brogdon and Connie Arnold.
Arrangements were under the direction of David E. Miles Funeral Home.

Frances Hooks

Frances Hooks, 67, passed away Sunday, Nov. 28, 2004 in the Appling HealthCare System after a brief illness. Mrs. Hooks died from injuries sustained in an auto accident. The Evans County native had lived in Appling County 25 years. She was a member of Covenant Church and was employed with the office of Probate Judge of Appling County. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert Hooks and her father, Ether Smith.
She is survived by one daughter, Michelle Revine of Tampa, Fla.; three sons, Jimmy Place of Thomasville, NC, Ricky Place of Highpoint, NC and Phillip Place of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada; one brother, William Thad Smith of Starke, Fla., Nellie Smith of Baxley; and 14 grandchildren and three nephews.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Dec. 1 at 4:00 p.m. from the chapel of Swain Funeral Home with the Rev. Jimmy Boatright officiating. iIntermentfollowed in Omega Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Billy Butler, Tony Hallman, Dave Hinely, Ronnie Nelson, Louis Parker, David Eason and Bret Smith.
Honorary pallbearers were the Judge of Probate Court and Staff, the Clerk of Superior Court and Staff, the Registrars Office Staff and Former Employees of Utopia Cleaners.
Musical selections were rendered by Floyd Hunter, Eric Eason, Michelle Beckworth and Samantha Carter.
Arrangements were under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.

Rev. Jerry J. Jones

Rev. Jerry J. Jones, 81, of Jesup, died Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2004 in Appling County from injuries received in an automobile accident. The Appling County native had lived in Wayne County for many years. A retired Southern Railroad employee, presently pastored several area churches: Surrency Grove Baptist Church, Surrency; Oak Grove Baptist Church, Baxley; Mary Grove Baptist Church, Gardi; First A.B. Missionary Baptist Church; Everette City. He entered the ministry Oct. 1959 and began pastoring Oct. 1963 at his home church, Surrency Grove Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Willie B. Jones of Jesup; two daughters, Evone Jones of Jesup, Cindy J. Jones of Atlanta; six sons, Elijah (Claudia) Jones of Wilmington, DE, Chester (Arlene) Jones of Jacksonville, Fla., Leland Jones of Atlanta, Terry L. Jones of Baxley, Jerome A. and Tommy L. Jones, both of Jesup; three sisters, Elder Lillie M. Brown, Gladys Jones and Elder Essie L. Alderman, all of Wilmington, DE; three brothers, James (Mae-Etta) Jones, the Rev. Jerusha (Naomi) Jones, all of Wilmington, DE and Quilla Lee Jones of Jesup; and a host of grands, great grands and other relatives survive.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at Surrency Grove Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery in Surrency.
Arrangements were under the direction of Royal Funeral Home of Jesup.

Luerenda Fowler

Luerenda Fowler, 82, of Surrency, passed away Monday, Nov. 29, 2004 in the Appling HealthCare System after an extended illness. She was a life long resident of Appling County and a member of Zion Church of God. Mrs. Luerenda was widely known for participation in civic and church events, as an impersonator of Minnie Pearl. She was born Jan. 28, 1922 to the late Dave Burke and the late Lessie Eason Burke. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Elmer (Snap) Fowler.
She is survived by one daughter, Barbara (Martin) Corbitt of Hazlehurst; three sons, Pete (Naomi) Fowler of Baxley, Benny (Linda) Fowler of Surrency and Tommy (Betty) Fowler of Jacksboro, TN; two sisters, Anna Lee Lightsey and Thelma O'Quinn, both of Baxley; one brother, Dennis Burke of Jesup; and 13 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Dec. 1 at 2:00 p.m. from the Chapel of Swain Funeral Home with the Rev. R.M. Warren, the Rev. Jerry Newell and the Rev. Mark Fowler officiating. iIntermentfollowed in Zion Church of God Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Matthew Fowler, Bradley Fowler, Mark Fowler, B.J. Fowler, Chris Corbitt and Grant Corbitt.
Honorary pallbearers were all in attendance.
Musical selections were rendered by Bradley Fowler, Sheila Kennedy, Cindy Fowler, Becky Byrd, Robin Fowler and Stephanie Fowler.
Arrangements were under the directions of Swain Funeral Home.
