Monroe M. Crosby
Monroe M. Crosby, 79, of Baxley, died Tuesday, May 25, 2004 at his residence after an extended illness. A life long resident of Appling County and was a member of Zoar Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Army Veteran having served in 517th Parachute Infantry Regiment in World War II. Crosby was retired from U.S. Postal Service. He was born July 23, 1924 to the late Lawton Monroe Crosby and the late Luna Stone Crosby. Crosby was the widower of Carlyne Land Crosby.
He is survived by one daughter, Elleen Peacock of Surrency; two sons, Mitchell Carl Crosby of Gray and Mickey Lawton Crosby of Brooklet; one sister, Eloise Bullard of Baxley; two aunts, Lydia Stone and Sadie Strickland; seven grandchildren and six grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services were held Thursday, May 27 at 2:00 p.m. from the chapel of Swain Funeral Home with the Rev. Louis Hart, the Rev. Jeff Waters and the Rev. Cal Marsh officiating. iIntermentfollowed in Oak View Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Lawton Bullard, Mark Peacock, Brian Crosby, Frank Moore, Stan Deen and Roger Cain.
Honorary pallbearers were Members of Zoar Baptist Church, Sammy and Betty Wommack, Donald Jarrett, David and Mary Burke, the Rev. Creig Smith and David Tidwell.
Musical selections were rendered by Martha Beecher, Chad Hall and Taps played by grave side by Jamie Davis.
Arrangements were under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.
James Andrew Dubberly
James Andrew Dubberly, 58, died Saturday, May 29, 2004 at his residence on Fair Street after a long illness. He was born Feb. 25, 1946 and was a native and life long resident of Appling County. Dubberly was a truck driver and was previously employed with Beasley Timber Company. He was a veteran of Vietnam and attended Big Oaks Church of God. Dubberly was preceded in death by a grandson, Steve Mathis, Jr.; his father, Andrew Jackson Dubberly, Jr.; his mother, Dora Lee Dixon Peace and his step-father, Edward Peace.
He is survived by his wife, Jeanette Davis Dubberly of Baxley; two daughters, Pamela Davis of Baxley and Anita Mathis of Baxley; one son, James Edward Dubberly of Baxley; one sister, Martha Cain of Hazlehurst; two brothers, Johnny J. Dubberly of Uvalda and Wadis Dubberly of Folkston; his grandmother, Dora Dixon of Millan; six grandchildren, four step-grandchildren; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 1 from the chapel of David E. Miles Funeral Home with the Rev. Dennis Bryant and the Rev. Glen Bohannon officiating. iIntermentfollowed in Hazlehurst Memorial Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Edward Errett, Julius Errett, Richard Hughes, Ricky Cain, Kelly Bryant, Christopher Bohannon and Clay Dubberly.
Honorary pallbearers were Southern Care Hospice of Vidalia and Employees of Waffle King in Hazlehurst.
Musical selections were rendered by Missy Evans and Annette Herrington.
David E. Miles Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Etta Mae (Bowen) Varnadore
Etta Mae (Bowen) Varnadore, 89, died Sunday, May 30, 2004 at her residence after a short illness. She was a native and life long resident of Appling County. Mrs. Varnadore was a charter member of the Covenant Church and was a retired seamstress. She was born April 11, 1915 to the late Evie Cain and the late Effie Rentz Cain.
She is survived by one daughter, Willie Mae Yarbrough of Baxley; five sons, Curtis Varnadore of Winter Haven, Fla., Elmer Varnadore of Elizabethtown, KY, Carlton Varnadore and Talmadge Varnadore, both of Baxley and Billy Varnadore of Lakeland, Fla.; three sisters, Eunice Stone of Baxley, Eulafay Griffin of Hazlehurst and Effie Mae Reeves of Lumber City; one brother, Elton Cain of Portland, Oregon; 17 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 1 at 11:00 a.m. from the chapel of Swain Funeral Home with Dr. Hugo Hammond and the Rev. Elmer Varnadore officiating. iIntermentfollowed in Zoar Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Dewayne Varnadore, Rodney Varnadore, David Varnadore, Andy Varnadore, Kelly Chancey and Justin Swain.
Musical selections were rendered by Dr. and Mrs. Hugo Hammond.
Arrangements were under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.
George Lewis Wise, Jr.
George Lewis Wise, Jr., 71, of Hortense, died early Saturday Morning, June 5, 2004 in the Hospice of the Golden Isles in Brunswick after a long illness. He was born in Baxley and his parents were George L. Wise, Sr. and Lottie L. Norfleet Wise Rentz. Wise served in the U.S. Army for eight years and was of the Baptist Faith. He worked as a machine operator with the Criso Wood Treatment Plant in Baxley, before retiring. Wise was preceded in death by his wife, Nell Crapps Wise.
Survivors include his two sons, George L. Wise III of Atlanta and Carl S. Wise of Brunswick; one step-daughter, Analee Deloach of Savannah; his step-father, Henry Rentz of Waycross; two step-sisters, Dorothy Hollis of Baxley and Penny Herrin of Nashville; and also several nieces and nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services were held Monday, June 7 at 11 a.m. from the chapel of Chambless-Frye Funeral Home with the Rev. Albert T. Cramer officiating. Burial followed with military honors in Little cemetery in Hortense.
Pallbearers were Leslie and Clifford Patten, Thomas Hall, Donald Dubberly, Glenn Little and Jessie Hampton.
Arrangements were under the direction of Chambless-Frye Funeral Home of Nahunta.
Burnese C. Darsey
Burnese C. Darsey, 87, of Bristol, died Sunday, May 16, 2004 in the Appling HealthCare System after an extended illness. A life long resident of Appling County, she was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon Darsey and her parents John Carter and Fannie Mae Dubberly Carter.
She is survived by one daughter, Frances Yawn of Bristol; one son, Edsel Darsey of Surrency; a sister, Bonnie MacManus of Brunswick; a brother, D.S. Carter of Atlanta; nine grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild; and several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 18 at 2:00 p.m. from the chapel of Swain Funeral Home with the Rev. Tom Lightsey and Elder Thomas Lightsey officiating. iIntermentfollowed in Antioch Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Rickey Darsey, Stephen Darsey, Dale Smith, Hugh Lightsey, Brooks Lightsey and Charles Davis.
Honorary pallbearers were Mary Dixon, Carl Dixon, Jr, Leona Carter, Jennings Williamson, Deborah Lightsey, Jerald and Barbara Smith, George and Ila Mae McLeighton, Grave Craven, Donald and Phillis Williams, Debbie Hotchkiss, J.L. and Louise Harris, Jean Dykes, Harold and Mary Lee Williamson, Hilda Bruce, Vanzel and Gail Perry.
Musical selections were rendered by Freda Jones, Pat Haynes and Donna Darsey.
Jean P. Norton
Jean P. Norton, 76, died Tuesday, May 18, 2004 in the DeKalb Medical Center after a short illness. A native of Perry Florida and she had lived in Appling County for the past 31 years. She was a member of the Christian Science Mother Church in Boston, Mass. Mrs. Norton was born January 12, 1928 to the late Lee Ira Powell and the late Lupina Parker Powell.
She is survived by her husband, Morris Norton, Sr. of Baxley; two daughters, Barbara A. Upchurch of Kennesaw and Mary Carol Miller of Douglas; three sons, Stephen D. Mesimer of Atlantic Beach, Fla., Morris Norton, Jr. of Douglas and Charles Ross Norton of Baxley; mother-in-law, Lucille Burke of Baxley; six grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services were held Friday, May 21 at 11:00 a.m. from the Asbury United Methodist Church with the Rev. Vance Ross officiating. iIntermentfollowed in the church cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Todd Norton, Justin Upchurch, Randy Havard, Keith Morris, Henry Morris and Allen Atkins.
Honorary pallbearers were the Adult Sunday School Class of Asbury United Methodist Church.
Musical selections were rendered by Debra Futch and Joann Switzer.
Remembrances may be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.

Juanita C. Rentz
Juanita C. Rentz, 84, of Baxley, died Thursday, May 27, 2004 at her residence after an extended illness. A native of Clinch County, she had lived in Appling County most of her life. She was a member of Dunn Memorial Baptist Church. Mrs. Rentz was born October 24, 1919 to the late Robert Leon Combs and the late Bessie Mae Bishop Combs. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Harold Rentz, a sister, Vivian Moody and a grandson, Jamie McDaniel.
She is survived by eight daughters, Barbara (Auborn) Horton of Odum, Harolyn (Albert) Kent of Surrency, Glenda (Larry) Bass, Lawanda Rentz, Cheryl (Larry) Stone, Judy McDaniel, Marilyn (Larry) Hall, Janice (Deen) Craven, all of Baxley; two sons, Edward (Peggy) Rentz and Rodney (Yvonne) Rentz, both of Baxley; two sisters, Ogreta Roberts of Tallahassee, Fla. and Nell Ford of Chalmette, LA; one brother, Robert Earl Combs of Gilbert, SC; 20 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services were held Sunday, May 30 at 3:00 p.m. from Dunn Memorial Baptist Church with the Rev. Rick Brown and the Rev. James Branch officiating. iIntermentfollowed in Memorial Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were grandsons: Eddie Rentz, Jeff Bass, Clint Bass, Glen McDaniel, Craig Stone, Dino Craven, Matthew Westberry and Ryan Gardner.
Honorary pallbearers were Joyful Saints Sunday School Class of Dunn Memorial Baptist Church, W.C. and Dorine Nash, Dr. Orlando Fernando and Staff, Dr. James Burke and Staff and South Georgia Hospice.
Musical selections were rendered by David Williams, Tara Boyette, Julie Brown and Kara Miller.
Arrangments were under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.
Bernard Ralph Tanner
Bernard Ralph Tanner, 83, of Baxley, died Saturday, May 22, 2004 in the Appling HealthCare System after a short illness. He was a native of Marshall, Michigan and had lived in Appling County for the past 10 years. Tanner was retired from Winter Haven Hospital in Florida and retired from the United States Navy after 20 years of service. He was a Chief Petty Officer and a Pearl Harbor survivor.
He is survived by three daughters, Donna Copas (Richard) of Dublin, Hilda (David) Waters of Baxley and Josephine Youngblood of Dublin; four sons, Bernard Ralph Tanner, Jr. (Joy) of Winder, Thomas David Tanner of Ft. Myers, Fla., Calvin Day of Geneva, Fla. and Revis Sirmans of Lumber City; 13 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren also survive.
Grave side services were held Monday, May 24 at 3:00 p.m. from Powell Family cemetery in Telfair County with military honors with the Rev. Randy Manning officiating.
Active pallbearers were Military.
Arrangements were under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.
