Services for Andrew Charles Collins of McRae were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 23 at Centilla Missionary Baptist Church in Helena with interment in the church cemetery.
The Rev. William Jackson and the Rev. Doyal Connell officiated.
Collins, 74, died Monday, Sept. 18, 2006 in Atlanta. He was the son of the late Morris and Margaret Collins, and was the widower of Claudia Mae Johnson.
He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, attending church services, going fishing with the staff and patients at McRae Manor, and never turned down a good meal. He spent the last three years at McRae Manor where he always kept a smile.
Survivors include daughters, Peggy Hagen of Sarrento, Fla. and Louvone (Bobby) Williams of Apopka, Fla.; sisters, Emma Lee Harper of McRae, Jerdean (John) Ross of Detroit, Mich. and Betty McRae of Lithonia; brother, Willie Clyde Collins of Atlanta; step-daughters, Flora Quattlebaum, Evelyn Jackson and Sharon Collins; step-sons, Cecil Mainor, Lonnie Johnson, Norris Collins and Charles Collins; niece, Carolene Sanders; nephew, Ernest Collins Jr.; cousin, James Hamilton; sisters-in-law, Alvonia Collins, Rozell Collins, Lydia M. Gaynor and Ruth Denson; brother-in-law, John Ross; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Carrie Mae Smith Edwards
Services for Carrie Mae Smith Edwards of McRae were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 24 at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in McRae with interment at Mt. Calvary CME Church cemetery.
The Rev. Sammy Jackson officiated.
Edwards, 72, died Monday, Sept. 18, 2006 in Coffee County. She was the daughter of late L.W. Smith and Verbenia Smith, and was the widow of Frank Edwards Sr.
Survivors include her daughter, Gloria Edwards (James) Fletcher of Baxley; sons, Roudeth (Emma) Edwards of McRae, Frank (Susan) Edwards Jr. of Lumber City, Anthony (Annie Pearl) Edwards of Lumber City, Calvin (Deborah) Edwards of Hazlehurst, Alonza (Theresa) Edwards of McRae, Ricky (Rosa) Edwards Sr. of Lumber City, Stanley (Angelia) Edwards Sr. of Hazlehurst, and Kenneth (Cynthia) Edwards of Lumber City; sisters, Josephine MaCarthur of Riverdale and Louella Smith of Rochester, N.Y.; brothers, Willie L. (Josephine) Smith of Lumber City; David (Claraetha) Smith of McRae, Bennie (Lucy) Tillman, and Willie C. Josie Mae Mathis
Services for Josie Mae Mathis of McRae were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 23, at St. Mark Baptist Church in Eastman with interment in the church cemetery.
The Rev. J.L. Smith and the Rev. Eddie Hart officiated.
Mathis, 88, died Monday, Sept. 18, 2006 in Atlanta. She was the daughter of the late Wylie and Estella Tuff, and was the widow of William Ingram and Joseph Mathis. She was preceded in death by children, Billy Mae, Joseph, Annease and Letha Ingram and Ronald Mathis.
She was employed by Coca Cola for 40+ years. Once retired from Coca Cola, she worked diligently in the church.
Survivors include her daughter, Lucie Mathis of Powder Springs; son-in-law, Freddie Lamb of Michigan; daughter-in-law, Frances Mathis of Cherokee, N.C.; adopted son, Artis McRae of McRae; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, and two very special friends, Lucie Bryant of Washington, D.C., and Evelyn Thrasher of Arizona; and a long list of cousins and beloved friends.

Janet Lynn ‘Ruby’ Schwartz
A memorial service for Janet Lynn “Ruby” Schwartz will be held at a later date in Michigan.
Schwartz, 43, died Thursday, Sept. 21, 2006 in Savannah. She was married to Paul Schwartz.
Schwartz was born in McRae and resided there until moving to Smyrna, Tenn. in 1976, ultimately calling South Boardman, Mich. home since 1988. “Ruby” worked for several years at Sara Lee Bakery in the sanitation department and was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to her husband of nine years, survivors include her children, Linda Danielle White of Smyrna, Tenn., Joshua Rhan Purvis of Gainesville, Fla. and Brittny Lynn Capps of Michigan; sisters, Pamela Denise Cousino of Tennessee and Lori Elayne Mattingly of Hinesville; and two grandchildren.

Charlie Myrle Shoemaker
Services for Charlie Myrle Shoemaker of McRae were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 23 at the chapel at Lowe’s Funeral Home in Helena with interment at Springhill Cemetery.
The Rev. Gwinnette Aldridge and the Rev. Jim Mason officiated.
Shoemaker, 73, died Thursday, Sept. 21, 2006 at home after an extended illness. She was the daughter of the late Horace Franklin Hester and Neta Browning Hester and was married to Preston Lee Shoemaker.
She was a homemaker and had retired from Sears and Chas Mar in McRae. She was also a member of Springhill Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband, survivors include her daughter, Jeanne Lynn Lucklow of Greenfield, Wis., sons, Danny Lee Shoemaker and Mark Allen Shoemaker, both of McRae; six grandchildren, Kelly Mizell, Nicole Shoemaker, Melanie Shoemaker, Taylor Lucklow, Kristen Lucklow, and Michael Brewer; three great-grandchildren, Walker Mizell, Cayla Brewer, and Chloe Brewer; brothers and sisters, Estelle Cone of Soperton, Vera Pittman of Tampa, Fla., Grace Creech of Hazlehurst, Betty Sammons of Cordele, Darlene Hayes of Sacramento, Calif., Horace Hester of McRae, Paul Hester of Cordele, Donnie Hester of McRae and Ronnie Hester of Towns; and several nieces and nephews.

Annie Mae Walker Swilley
Services for Annie Mae Walker Swilley of Brunswick were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 23 at Midway United Methodist Church with interment in the church cemetery.
Swilley, 93, died Thursday, Sept. 21, 2006. She was the daughter of the late Arthur and Lucy Spires Towns and the widow of Paul Walker. She was preceded in death by children, Melvin Walker, Elouise Jones and Ernest Walker.
A native of Telfair County, she was an active member of Southside Baptist Church and the adult Sunday school class. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her children, Osborn (Bonnie) Walker of McRae, Ernestine DeWiese of Jacksonville, Fla., Elaine (Robert) Knight and Jerry (Murlene) Walker, both of Brunswick, and Charles (Sandra) Walker of Petersburg, Va.; brother and sister, Payton Towns and Lorene Bailey, both of Milledgeville, Ruby Ivey of Bonaire, Louise Manning of Jackson, Miss., Katherine Keller of Ridgecrest, Calif., and Pauline Garrison of Helena; 24 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Services for Rosa Lee Wooten Vann of Atlanta were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 23 at Antioch CME Church in Hazlehurst with interment at Mt. Calvary CME Church cemetery.

Vann, 51, died Monday, Sept. 18, 2006 in Atlanta. She was the daughter of John Henry Wooten and Mamie Lee McMillian Wooten and was the widow of Joel Vann. She was preceded in death by brothers, Sammie Lee Wooten, Edward Wooten and Esker Wooten.
Survivors include sons, Joel, William, Keith and Jonathan; daughters, Monique and Curlanda; brothers, John (Lucille), Cornelius (Clarice), Rodger (Bonnie) and Freddie; sister, Katherine (Jerry); aunts, Ida McMillian, Katherine McMillian and Catherine Wooten; uncle Howard McMillian; four grandchildren; a host of relatives and friends.

Nancy Berry
Services for Nancy Berry of Milan were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 13 at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Milan with interment in the church cemetery.
Berry, 88, died Monday, Sept. 11, 2006 at Dorminy Medical Center in Fitzgerald. She was the daughter of the late Wiley and Viola Hilliard Cannon of Dodge County, and was the widow of John David Berry.
She had worked at McRae Manor Nursing Home in McRae, was a housewife and a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church.
She is survived by grandsons, Milton Ussery of Fitzgerald and John David Ussery of Milan; granddaughter, Cindy Yancey of Rhine; seven great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

Talmadge Hall
Services for Talmadge Hall of Helena were held at 12:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 15 at Glovers Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Helena with interment in the New Providence Baptist Church Cemetery.
The Rev. James M. Taylor and the Rev. Joe McLeod officiated.
Hall, 65, died Friday, Sept. 8, 2006 at his residence. He was the son of the late Oscar Millar Hall and Mallassie Lee Burch Hall.
He did farm work for about 40 years with J.T. Woodard of Eastman, until his health failed.
Survivors include Hilda Webb (James) of Woodbridge, Va., Rebedell Brooks (Charles) of Oxon Hill, Md., Walter Hall (Gloria) of Macon, Nathaniel Hall (Josephine) of Dexter, Sam Hall of Rochester, N.Y., Jacalyn Stone (Charles) of McRae, Dorothy Monroe (Estell) of Atlanta, Clinton Hall of Rochester, N.Y., Murtis Mays of Brookley, Curtis Spates of Miami, Fla., and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
