CORDELE — Funeral services for Carolyn J. Kennedy of Lee County will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, March 8, 2007, at Warwick First Baptist Church. iIntermentwill follow in Warwick Methodist Cemetery. Mrs. Kennedy, 80, died at her residence Tuesday, March 6, 2007.

She was born Sunday, March 21, 1926, in Warwick and was the daughter of the late Emmett Jerome Jones Jr. and Euna Virlie Gleaton Jones. Mrs. Kennedy was a homemaker and a member of Warwick First Baptist Church.

She is survived by her children, GerriDaniel and her husband, Randy of Lee County, Jerry Clay Kennedy of Cordele, and Stanley Kennedy, Ronnie Kennedy and his wife, Debbie, and Lee Kennedy, all of Warwick; two brothers, Buford Jones and William Keith “Billy” Jones; two sisters, Frances J. Whitfield and Barbara Ann “Bobbie” Pate; nine grandchildren and eight great- grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Johnny Kennedy; daughter-in-law, Dawn Kennedy; grandchildren, Joshua Kennedy, Brittany Kennedy and Jeremy Kennedy; and siblings, Emmett Jones Jr., Florence J. Wiles and Jacqulin J. Hancock.

DAWSON — Edna Sylvia Wilkerson, 65, of Dawson died at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital on Wednesday, March 7, 2007.

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, March 9, 2007, at Rehoboth Baptist Church of Shellman with Rev. Joe Poitevent officiating. iIntermentwill follow in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Wilkerson was born August 30, 1941, in Dougherty County, daughter of the late Frank Tidwell and Mrs. Myrlene J. Tidwell. She retired from Bobs Candy Company with 15 years of service.

She was a member of Rehoboth Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Doll Wilkerson of Dawson; son, Ronnie Roland and wife, Shannon of Shellman; mother, Myrlene J. Tidwell of Shellman; two grandchildren, Jamie McCullough and husband, James of Shellman and Taylor Roland of Shellman.

Memorials may be made to Rehoboth Baptist Church, P.O. Box 421, Shellman, GA 39886.

Visitation will be Thursday, March 8, 2007, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Harvey Funeral Home.

CAMILLA — Lillian Mathis Cochran, 72, of Baconton died Wednesday, March 14, 2007, at her sister’s residence in Bridgeboro.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday, March 16, 2007, at Parker-Bramlett Funeral Home with burial in Bethany Church Cemetery. Rev. Chad Boyd will officiate.

Born January 29, 1935, in Mitchell County to the late James Robert and Lorene Ragan Mathis, Mrs. Cochran was a member of Baconton Baptist Church. She retired from the Federal Government, IRS branch. Mrs. Cochran was a 1953 graduate of Mitchell County High School and a 1957 graduate of Martha Berry College. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Robert Cochran and a brother, Clyde Mathis.

Survivors include two sisters, Barbara Gaskins and husband, Bennie of Bridgeboro and Ann Littleton of Bridgeboro; a sister- in-law, Judy Mathis of Peachtree City and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.

Visitation will be 6:30 p.m.-8 p.m. Thursday, March 15, 2007, at Parker-Bramlett Funeral Home.

A Rosary service will be held at 6 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Sol Griffin Jr.

ASHBURN — Funeral services for Sol Griffin, Jr., 56, will be held Friday, March 16, 2007, at 3 p.m. at Ashburn First Baptist Church with burial to follow in Rose Hill Cemetery. Mr. Griffin died Monday at his residence from natural causes.

Mr. Griffin was born in Tift County, GA, and had resided in Lawrenceville, GA, for the last six years. He was the son of the late Elie Solomon Griffin, Sr. and Jessica Lee Fletcher Griffin. Mr. Griffin served as a Captain in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a member of the National Rifle Association, the AARP, and the Calhoun First Baptist Church. He was the Manager of the Sleep Lab for Sleep Ex of Atlanta.

Mr. Griffin is survived by one son, Sol (Nicole) Griffin III of Stafford, VA; and two daughters, Mary C. and Suzanna L. Griffin, both of Woodbridge, VA. Also surviving are two grandchildren, Elie Griffin IV and Tre Waller. Mr. Griffin also survived by two brothers, Ben (Cindy) Griffin of Dalton and Dr. Don (Susan) Griffin of Newnan; and one sister, Candy (Vin) Johnston of Ashburn.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Friday at the Ashburn First Baptist Church.

AMERICUS — Dr. William B. King, 91, of Americus died on March 9, 2007, in Flint River Community Hospital, having been evacuated to that facility when Sumter Regional Hospital was destroyed by the tornado that ripped through Americus on March 1, 2007.

Dr. King has been cremated and a memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 17, 2007, at Fellowship Baptist Church in Sumter County with a reception to follow the service. iIntermentwill be at a later date in Forsyth, GA. The Rev. Wendy Joyner will officiate.

Dr. King was born in Forsyth, Monroe County, GA, on November 11, 1915, the son of William Burwell King and Mary Browning King.

He graduated from Gordon Military College, received a B.S. degree from Georgia Teachers College (now Georgia Southern State University), Master’s degree from the University of Georgia, and his Ph.D. from New York University. He served with the U.S. Air Corps during World War II.

His career spanned more than four decades. He taught in schools and universities in Monroe County, GA, Columbus, GA, Fitzgerald, GA, the University of Georgia, New York University, Wayne State University, Detroit, MI, and in August of 1963 he was appointed President of Georgia Southwestern College (now Georgia Southwestern State University) in Americus where he served admirably until his retirement in 1978. It was during his administration at Georgia Southwestern that he was able to lead the transformation from a Junior College to a four-year institution and ultimately to a graduate institution, offering several programs of professional accreditation. Upon his retirement, the Board of Regents bestowed on him the honor of President Emeritus.

After retirement, he served for several years as Associate Executive Director of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Dr. King was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity, and professional fraternities Kappa Delta Pi, Pi Delta Kappa, and Psi Chi. He was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church, Americus, GA. He will be remembered for his dedicated service to the young people he has taught, his service to community and church, and his devotion to family.

He is survived by his wife, Vivian Harris King; a daughter, Hellen K. Driggers (Walt); a grandson, Christopher K. Driggers of Ocala, FL; a son, William H. King (Sandra) of Dunwoody; and a niece, Mary Heard of Leesburg, GA.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Georgia Southwestern State University Foundation, P.O. Box 926, Americus, GA 31709 or to the League of the Good Samaritan, 2001 South Lee Street, Americus, GA 31709.
