AMERICUS — Mr. Alton E. “Ed” Smitherman, 78, of 201 17th Green Street, Americus, died at his residence early Tuesday afternoon, March 13, 2007.
Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Friday, March 16, 2007, at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bill Dupree and the Rev. Jim McIlrath officiating. Burial services will follow at 2 p.m. Friday, March 16, 2007, at Andersonville National Historic Site cemetery at the Rostrum with full Masonic Rites and military honors.
The family will receive friends at First United Methodist Church Parlor from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. before services and at other times the family residence, 201 17th Green St., Americus.
The following are asked to serve as active pallbearers, Scott Smitherman, Steve Smitherman, Garland Mears, H.P. Ritch, Ron Phillips and Floyd Martin.
Mr. Smitherman was born March 21, 1928, the son of the late Clyde Smitherman and Odell Wallace Smitherman in Marvel, AL. He retired from the United States Air Force as a Master Sergeant after twenty years service; during his term of service, he served in the Vietnam Conflict. He was retired from the U.S. Secret Service as Special Officer after twenty years service, having served during President Jimmy Carter’s administration. He was a 32nd degree Mason with 50 years of service. During his term in the military and secret service, he traveled the world and was an avid golfer and fan.
Mr. Smitherman is survived by his loving wife, Emily Smitherman of Americus; a daughter, Michelle Smitherman of Americus; a brother and sister-in- law, Bobby G. Smitherman and Charlotte of Huey Town, AL; two nephews, Scott Smitherman and wife, Michelle of Jacksonville, FL, and Steve Smitherman and wife, Shelly of Nashville, TN; a great- niece, Zoe Smitherman and a great-nephew, Zack Smitherman, both of Nashville, TN.

Born October 26, 1932, in Miller County, Mr. Glass was a retired police officer and a member of Kinchafoonee Baptist Church in Leesburg.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Wilma Glass; one son, Michael Horne and one grandson, Joshuah Lomineck.
Survivors include two sons, James L. Glass of Colquitt and Roger (Michelle) E. Horne of Sasser; one daughter, Rhonda (Edward) Jones of Newton; one brother, H.E. “Buddy” Glass of Colquitt; eight grandchildren, Hope Brock, Samantha Addison, Misty Willis, James Michael Horne, Tonya Horne, Tyler Horne, Aimee’ Horne and Heather Horne; three great- grandchidlren, Santana Addison, Logan Willis and Zakkary Willis.

Sis. Mae Bell Johnson was born May 6, 1940, in Dawson, Terrell County, GA, to the late Man Jackson and Lillie Mae Colbert.
She was educated in the public schools of Terrell County, GA.
Sis. Johnson was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Charlie Johnson.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Annie Mae Johnson and two brothers, Donald Mays and William Jackson.
Sis. Johnson leaves to cherish her precious memories, two loving daughters, Betty Walton and Leatha Clay (Arthur), both of Dawson, GA; four sons, Eddie Powell (Dot) of Jacksonville, FL, Willie Powell (Minnie), Curtis Huie (Gennelle) and George Huie (Demetrice), all of Blountstown, FL; two sisters, Daisy Pickett of Dawson, GA, and Dr. Mamie Keys of San Diego, CA; four grandchildren raised as her own, Lasheka Garrett, Montravion Garrett, Yolanda Powell and Na’Tassja McCloud; a special granddaughter that she loved dearly, Vontressa Powell of Albany, GA; a devoted daughter- in-law, Ruby Jones of Blountstown, FL; thirteen other grandchildren; ten great- grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
