Georgia, U.S., Marriage Records From Select Counties, 1828-1978

Joseph Oscar Jones
Graveside services for Joseph Oscar Jones of Milan were held at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 15 in the Mt. Zion Church Cemetery.
Jones, 88, died Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2006. He was the son of the late Levi and Claudia Alligood Jones, and was the widower of Rosa Nell Knight Jones.
A native of Telfair County, where he lived most of his life, he was a self-employed carpenter, a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He had lived in the Middle Georgia Nursing Home in Eastman for the past 10 years.
Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Lena Mae and Lloyd Wilson of Savannah; three sisters, Sybill Whit of Rutledge, Lois Fowler of Savannah and Jeannette Baltsgelar of Columbia, S.C.; five grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
Vaughn Funeral Home of McRae was in charge.

Joel Olen Sellers
Graveside services for Joel Olen Sellers of Helena were held Wednesday, Sept. 13 in Oakland Cemetery in Helena.
The Rev. Tim Lamb officiated.
Sellers, 81, died Saturday, Sept. 9, 2006. He was the son of the late John Sellers and Ruthie Harrelson Sellers and was the widower of Mellese Spoon Sellers.
A lifelong resident of Telfair County, he was a beekeeper.
Sellers is survived by several nieces and nephews.
Townsend Brothers Funeral Home, Inc. of Dublin was in charge.

Richard L. Crider Sr.
A memorial service for Richard L. Crider Sr. of Thomaston was held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 7 at Trinity Baptist Church in Thomaston.
Crider, 80, died Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2006 at his residence. He was married to Elizabeth (Hunt) Crider.
A native of the Bronx, N.Y., he was a former resident of McRae and Griffin, and had lived in Thomaston since 1970. He served his country in the U.S. Army in World War II. Crider was a graduate of Georgia Tech, and worked as a textile engineer for B.F. Goodrich in Thomaston and Crompton Highland Mills in Griffin. He was also a farmer, and was a member of St. Georges Episcopal Church in Griffin.
In addition to his wife, survivors include his daughter, Anna (Crider) Gore of Thomaston; son, Richard L. Crider Jr., also of Thomaston; sister, Nancy Maloy of McRae; and grandsons, Hunter Gore and Ben Gore, both of Thomaston.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Thomas of Canterbury Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 807, Thomaston, Ga., 30286.
Pasley Fletcher Funeral Home, Inc. of Thomaston was in charge of arrangements.

Lonnie Jean Studstill Larkey
Services for Lonnie Jean Studstill Larkey of Alamo were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 11 in the chapel at Vaughn Funeral Home with burial in the Larkey Cemetery.
The Rev. Donnie Brown officiated.
Larkey, 77, formerly of Jacksonville, died Saturday, Sept. 9, 2006. She was the daughter of the late Lon and Rebecca Boney Studstill and was the widow of Isaac Wilburn Larkey. She was preceded in death by her son, Davey Joe Larkey.
A native of Telfair County, where she had lived most of her life, she was a member of Union Springs Baptist Church, and had worked as an LPN for 24 years before retiring from Telfair County Hospital.
Survivors include daughter, Donna Larkey (Curtis) Wells of Alamo; grandchildren, Danny Isaac (Marisa) Larkey of McRae, Kimberly Larkey of McRae, and Matt Wells of Alamo; sisters, Marguerite McCranie of Brunswick and Daris Padgett of Warner Robins. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Vaughn Funeral Home of McRae was in charge of arrangements.

Dottie Weaver Martin
Services Dottie Weaver Martin of Milan were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 11 at Milan Baptist Church with interment in the Milan Cemetery.
The Rev. Myron Lane and the Rev. Wayne Cobb officiated.
Martin, 90, died Saturday, Sept. 9, 2006 at Telfair Regional Hospital in McRae. She was the daughter of the late John Lester and Winnie Pope Weaver of Dodge County, and the widow of Ernest Martin of Milan.
She was a member of Milan Baptist Church and was a homemaker.
Survivors include sons, Brent (Carol) Martin of Douglas, Mickey (Shirley) Martin of Milan, Preston (Margaret) Martin of St. Simons Island; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Contributions may be made to Milan Baptist Church Building Fund, or W. M.U., P.O. Box 157, Milan, Ga., 31060.
Lowe’s Funeral Home of Helena was in charge of arrangements.

Shirley Wilkes Clements
Services for Shirley Wilkes Clements of North Augusta, S.C., were held at noon Monday, Nov. 27 in the chapel at Stephen D. Posey Funeral Home of North Augusta with interment in Pineview Memorial Gardens.
The Rev. Brancie Stephens officiated.
Clements, 71, died Friday, Nov. 24, 2006. She was the wife of the late Etheridge Clements.
A native of Telfair County, she made her home in North Augusta, S.C. for the past 45 years. She was loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Charles and Eloise Clements and Randall and Jeanette Clements, all of North Augusta; daughters, Jill Doyle and Donna Sue Clements, both of North Augusta; five grandchildren, Elizabeth R. Atkins, BJ Clements, Carly Clements, Jamie Clements and Amanda Green; three great-grandchildren, Terryn Clements, Bryce Clements and Madison Green.
Pallbearers were BJ Clements, Jamie Clements, Christopher Green, James Wilkes, Eddie Wilkes and Jimmy Darley.
Stephen D. Posey Funeral Home of North Augusta, S.C. was in charge of arrangements.

Delacy Duane Smith
Graveside services for Delacy Duane Smith of Covington will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 2 in Oakgrove Cemetery.
Smith, 59, of Covington, died Sunday, Nov. 26, 2006. She was the daughter of the late Lawrence J. Duane Jr. and Joan Horton Duane.
A native of Telfair County, she was a retired R.N.
Survivors include her sons, Duane Smith of Locust Grove and Chadwick Smith of Jackson; brother, Dr. Larry Duane of Waycross; and grandchildren, Jacob Smith, Walker Smith, Cannon Smith and Miranda Smith.
Vaughn Funeral Home of McRae was in charge of arrangements.

James Franklin ‘Pops’ Elton
Services for James Franklin “Pops” Elton were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 24 in the chapel of Lowe’s Funeral Home of Helena with interment in the Scotland Cemetery.
The Rev. J.E. Gillis officiated.
Elton, 85, died Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2006 at Peachtree Christian Hospice in Duluth. He was the son of the late Frank and Ethel Harbin Elton of Wheeler County, and was married to Runell Elton of Flowery Branch.
Elton was retired from the Wheeler County Board of Education transportation department, and was a member of New Beulah Primitive Baptist Church of Hazlehurst.
In addition to his wife, survivors include his son, Karl (Linda) Elton of Flowery Branch; two grandchildren, Michelle Poole and LeAnne Ireland, both of Stuckey; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Billy Elton of McRae; six sisters, Ann Jackson of Alamo, Eloise Elton of McRae, Lillie Whatley of McRae, Abbie Locke of Scotland, Jewel Tucker of McRae and Joe Ann Moon of Scotland.
Lowe’s Funeral Home of Helena was in charge of the arrangements.

Frances Gunn Young
Services for Frances Gunn Young of Milan were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 29 at Harmony Baptist Church with interment in the Gunn/Young Cemetery.
The Rev. Alvin Lewis officiated.
Pallbearers were Andy Gunn, David Lewis, Al Lewis, Freddie Dorris, Steve Dorris, and Ronnie Gay.
Young, 74, died Sunday, Nov. 26, 2006 at her residence. She was the daughter of the late Jimmy and Essie Sue Bowen Gunn of Telfair County, and was married to Dan Young of Milan. She was preceded in death by Daniel Harold Young Jr. of St. Louis.
She was a member of Harmony Baptist Church, and was retired from the St. Louis District Dairy Council after 38 years. She was a frequent St. Louis and national speaker on dairy and nutrition issues, and also made appearances as an expert witness to two congressional committees, School Food Services and Industry’s Involvement in Nutrition Education.
Young was responsible for writing chapters in the “Handbook of Food Preparation,” and three subsequent revisions. She received numerous awards, including the Dairy Industry Award, the President’s Circle Nutrition Education Award, and the top national award from the American Dietetic Association for the Trimming the Fat: Modifying School Menus program. She held bachelor’s and master’s degrees and received the Honorary Alumni Award from the College of Home Economics at the University of Missouri-Columbia.
In addition to her husband, survivors include her grandchild, Zachery Daniel Young of St. Louis; stepchildren, Beth Young Madison of Cartersville, Karen Young McGee of Tifton and John Daniel Young of Hampton.
Lowe’s Funeral Home of Helena was in charge of arrangements.
