Dorothy Duggan Spell Fields
Services for Dot Fields of McRae were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 19 at McRae United Methodist Church with interment in the Oakgrove Cemetery.
Dr. Joel Dent and the Rev. Gordon B. Dukes Jr. officiated.
Fields, 79, died Thursday, Nov. 16, 2006 at Fairview Park Hospital in Dublin, after a brief illness. She was the daughter of the late Eddie Rowan and Mary Ann Duggan Spell, and the widow of Claude Fields of Swainsboro.
Born July 6, 1927 in Wrightsville, she attended Georgia Teacher’s College in Swainsboro, where she met and married Claude Fields. They lived in Swainsboro until their move to McRae, where they lived and worked for many years. She was active in her church and community in many ways, and considered one of the special achievements in her life to be her work in the program of Alcoholics Anonymous. She lived the motto, “If anyone anywhere reaches out for help, I want the hand of AA to be there.” Her hand was there for many individuals throughout her 37 years in AA.
Survivors include her children, Frank and Janet Fields of Dublin and Ronnie and Karen Fields of McRae; grandchildren, Brad Fields of Greensboro, N.C., Jerry Pankow of Nashville, Tenn., Amy Marsh of Alpharetta; Ron Fields and Scott Fields, both of McRae; and sister, Wynell Odom of Lyons.
Donations may be made in her memory to McRae United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 8, McRae, Ga., 31055.
Vaughn Funeral Home of McRae was in charge of arrangements.
Bernard Duey Higgins
Services for Bernard Duey Higgins of Helena were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 17 at Little Rock Church in Alamo with interment in the church cemetery.
The Rev. Rodney McCant officiated.
Higgins, 82, died Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2006. He was the son of the late John and Maude Higgins, and was married to Aline Williams Higgins. He was preceded in death by brother, Herman Higgins of Jonesboro, and brothers-in-law, Jack Williams of Gray, Robert B. Chaney of Acworth, and Walter D. (Butch) Phillips of Fayetteville, Ga.
In addition to his wife of 58 years, survivors include a niece, Joy Randels of Bradenton, Fla.; nephew, Tim Higgins of Venice, Fla.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Carol Williams of Gray, Elizabeth Chaney of Acworth, Geneva and Clint Powers of McDonough, Bobby and Evelyn Williams, and Pete and Betty Williams, all of Byron, Ellen Phillips of Fayetteville, Ga.; several nieces, nephews, and many friends.
Lowe’s Funeral Home of Helena was in charge of arrangements.
William H. Lewis
Services for William H. Lewis of McRae were held at noon Monday, Nov. 13 at Frances Chapel Baptist Church in McRae with interment in the church cemetery.
The Rev. E. Neal Dixon and the Rev. Adron Crawford officiated.
Lewis, 76, died Tuesday, Nov. 7 at Carl Vinson V.A. Medical Center in Dublin. He was the son of the late Joe and Mattie Tripp Lewis and was the widower of Catherine Clay Lewis. He was also preceded in death by two sisters.
Born in Telfair County, he was retired from Hazlehurst Mills, and had served in the U.S. Army during the period of the Korean War.
Survivors include children, William P. Lewis, and Sylvia Lewis, both of McRae and Melanie (Chris) Kirby of Helena; he raised one niece, Margie Clay of McRae; brother, Johnny (Nell) Lewis is Atlanta and Sally Horne of Orange Park, Fla.; special granddaughter, Speciaka L. Mason of Helen; seven grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild; a friend he thought of as a brother, James C. Allen of McRae; nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Alvin C. (Al) Varnadoe, Sr.
Services for Alvin C. (Al) Varnadoe Sr. of Eastman were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16 in Zebulon Baptist Church with interment in the church cemetery with full military honors.
The Rev. Paul Cowles and the Rev. Joe Bufford officiated. The Rev. Tim Nardi and the Rev. Larry Wilbanks officiated at graveside.
Varnadoe, 72, died Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2006 in the Dodge County Hospital. He was the son of the late Hugh Mack Varnadoe and Louise Baucom Varnadoe, and was married to Katherine Waters Varnadoe of Eastman. He was preceded in death by a brother, Leroy Varnadoe.
A native of Telfair County, he was a member of Zebulon Baptist Church, was a certified electrician, and owner of Varnadoe Electrical. He was a 20 year retired veteran of the U.S. Army. He was awarded the National Reform Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Good Conduct Medal 6th Award, served two tours of VietNam, received the VietNam Service Medal with Four Bronze Stars and VietNam Campaign Medal.
In addition of his wife, survivors include a daughter, Kay V. Ford (Aaron) of Eastman; son, Alvin (Cress) Varnadoe Jr. (Cindy) of Cochran; sister, Jean Davis (Arnold) of Roseville, Calif.; brothers, Comer Roger Varnadoe (Betty) of Lumber City, and Charlie Mack Varnadoe (Jackie) of Warner Robins; sister-in-law, Betty B. Varnadoe; five grandchildren, Will Ford, Josh Ford, Cole Ford, Wes Varnadoe, and Morgan Varnadoe; great-granddaughter, Brittany Ford; numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
Military personnel served as pall bearers. Robin Grenade was soloist, and Lori Sheffield served as musician for the service.
Contributions may be made to Zebulon Baptist Church or the donor’s favorite charity.

Rocky Joe Williams
Services for Rocky Joe Williams of Helena were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 19 at the chapel of Lowe’s Funeral Home with interment at El Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery.
Williams, 51, died Thursday, November 16, 2006 at St. Joseph Candler Hospital in Savannah after a brief illness.
He was the son of Mae Purvis Williams and the late Walter Williams of Helena.
He was a self employed carpenter and farmer.
In addition to his mother, survivors include brothers, Walter Williams Jr. of Helena and Ray Williams of Milan; nephew, Mickey Williams of Wichita Falls, Kan. and Ben Williams of Helena; nieces, Wendy Ray (Will) of Valdosta, Christy Williams and Ryan Chard of Tucson, Ariz. and Kelly Williams of Helena.

Mara Owens Georges
Services for Mara Owens Georges of Farragut, Tenn. were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 7 at Church Street United Methodist Church with interment in Pleasant Forest Cemetery at 4 p.m.
Dr. William J. Fowler and the Rev. Jan Buxton-Wade officiated.
Georges died Saturday, Nov. 4, 2006 at her home. She was the daughter of the late William Parks Owens and Cornelia Harrelson Owens, and was married to Christopher Georges. She was preceded in death by daughter, Mara Dee Georges Allen; brothers, Olin Eugene Owens and William Parks Owens Jr.
She was born in Alamo, Ga. and attended the University of Georgia. She was selected as a member of the first class for women training in Atlanta during WWII with the FAA as Aircraft Communicators and Weather Observers. She was a member of Church Street United Methodist Church and Circle 12 United Methodist Women and was an avid gardner, a member for many years of Dixie Highway Garden Club and received many awards for her flower arranging. She was also a member of Fox Den Women’s Club and three separate bridge clubs. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and friend.
In addition to her husband of 54 years, survivors include her daughter, Joy Georges McCabe and husband, Patrick; grandson, Christopher Robert McCabe, all of Farragut; sister-in-law, Bessie Owens of Alamo; niece, Donna Owens Hodges of Winder; and nephew, William Parks Owens III of Alamo.
Honorary pallbearers were Don Carmichael, George Dorsey, Terry Finnell, Emerson Fly, Robert Hunt, Joe Luna, David Witherspoon, Bob Shaller and John Ward.
Memorials may be made to a charity of your choice.

David Wayne LIttle
Services for David Wayne Little of Alamo were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 11 at Springhill Baptist Church with interment in the church cemetery.
The Rev. Robbie Rosier, the Rev. Franklin Bryant, the Rev. Jim Mason and the Rev. Thad Harvey officiated.
Little, 45, died Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2006 at Telfair Regional Hospital in McRae. He was the son of Bobby and Joyce Sanders Little of Danville, and was married to Patty Sammons Little of Alamo.
He worked at Bluegrass Container Corp. in Eastman as a machine operator, was a member of Springhill Baptist Church and was a volunteer in the Springhill Fire Department.
In addition to his wife and parents, survivors include his children, Katie Little and Becky Adams, both of Alamo; two grandchildren, Kaleb Adams and Kolby Adams, also of Alamo; sisters, Brenda Ellington of Danville, Carolyn Beacham of Laurens County, and Lisa Brantley of Danville; and brother, Larry Little of Kathleen.

Linda Louise Smith
Services for Linda Louise Smith of Helena were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 11 in the chapel of Lowe’s Funeral Home in Helena with interment at Alamo City Cemetery.
The Rev. James Merritt officiated.
Smith, 52, died Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2006 at Washington Regional Hospital in Fayetteville, Ark. She was the daughter of the late Noel Nolan Lloyd and Geneva Williams Lloyd of Helena, and was married to Ray Smith.
Born in Miami, Fla., Smith had lived most of her life in Telfair County.
In addition to her husband of Bethel Heights, Ark., and mother of Helena, survivors include her son, Conway Smith of Atlanta; sisters, Nora Thompson of Bethel Heights, Ark., Charlotte Marie McRae of Jesup, Doris Thompson of Daytona Beach, Fla.; brothers, John Lloyd and Thomas Lloyd both of Helena.

Jessie Rogers Thompson
Graveside services for Jessie Rogers Thompson of Helena were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 6 at Helena City Cemetery.
The Rev. James Spires officiated.
Thompson, 88, died Friday, Nov. 3, 2006 at Taylor Regional Hospital in Hawkinsville after an extended illness. She was the daughter of the late Grover and Mabel Rawlins Rogers of Telfair County was the widow of Jim Thompson. She was preceded in death by her son, Bobby Thompson.
She was retired from Roydon Wear, Inc. and a member of Helena Baptist Church.
Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Mary Gail Thompson of Hawkinsville; sister, Mary Harrelson (Lester) of Orange Park, Fla.; brother-in-law, Charles Thompson of Helena; and several nieces and nephews.
