Mrs. Janice Tucker Barrett Erikson passed away on Saturday, April 17, 2010 at Archbold Memorial Hospital in Thomasville, GA. She was 63. Born on July 4, 1946 in Moultrie, Georgia, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin Lloyd and Mabel Esther Howell Tucker. She was a retired waitress.
The funeral services for Mrs. Erikson will be held graveside Monday, April 19, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at Meigs Sunset Cemetery. The Rev. Billy Smith will officiate. Visitation will be held on Sunday, April 18, 2010 from 6-8 p.m. at Jamerson-Braswell Funeral Home in Pelham.
Mrs. Erikson was survived by her daughters, Sandra Weeks and husband, James, Tammy Moates and husband, Mitchell, all of Pelham and Judy Brooks and husband, Jeff, of Meigs. She was also survived by 6 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and a brother, Howell Tucker of Thomasville, GA.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Benjamin Lloyd and Mabel Ester Howell Tucker and a son, Mitchell Melton.
Winston Lamar Davis

Winston Lamar Davis, who was 83, passed away May 6, 2010 at Pelham Parkway Nursing Home in Pelham, Georgia after an illness of several months. Lamar was born in Cotton, Georgia, October 28, 1926 to John Alexander and Ruby Collins Davis. Nicknamed "T Model" as a child, because of his love of cars and anything mechanical, he worked many years for Haley Motor Company and other automobile dealerships in Albany, Georgia.
In 1954 Lamar's entrepreneurship took over and he started an independent auto service company in Albany, Georgia, and later acquired the Mack Truck dealership.
In 1965 Lamar moved his family to Thomasville, GA where he bought the Dodge dealership. In the early 70's Lamar founded Hercules Bumpers and later moved the manufacturing facility to his hometown of Pelham, Georgia. After creating a successful business he sold his share to his partners and tried to "retire". His hobbies were flying his own plane, boating and helping others. He was a generous man, especially to children and the Southern Baptist Convention. He loved politics and was a True Conservative. In 1980, he was appointed to the Board of Industry and Trade of Georgia by former governor Joe Frank Harris. He traveled extensively with this group on mission trips to many foreign lands seeking new industry for Georgia. He served in this capacity for ten years.
Lamar was a member of Union Grove Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife of nearly eight years, Shelby Davis, a stepdaughter Marianne Plank and husband, Larry, and their four children.
He is also survived by his own children Fran Davis Cobb and husband Richard of Orange Beach, AL, their two sons, Jaan Alexander Childs of Los Angeles, California and Richard Maury Cobb of Birmingham, AL, his sons Stan and Sid Davis of Atlanta and his son Charles Davis and his wife Kay of Coolidge, Georgia. Other survivors include his two siblings John Davis of Waycross, Georgia and Mack Davis of North Carolina.
A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, May 8, 2010 at 3:00 p.m. at Union Grove Baptist Church in Mitchell County, Georgia. Visitation will be held on Friday, May 7, 2010 from 6-8 p.m. at Jamerson-Braswell Funeral Home in Pelham. Pallbearers will be W.C. Kinard, Neadom Palmer, Jack Smith, Roger Cook, Bo Curles, Charles Lodge. Services will be officiated by Rev. Doug Hall and Rev. Milton Gardner. iIntermentwill follow in Union Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mr. William Hershel Hurst, 68, of Meigs, GA, passed away on Sunday, May 2, 2010 at his home. Mr. Hurst was a retired farmer. Born on November 22, 1941 to the late Renza Hurst & Murtice Alligood, he was a veteran of the Army. He was also a member of New Bethel Baptist Church.
Funeral services for Mr. Hurst will be on Wednesday, May 5, 2010 at 11:00 at New Bethel Baptist Church with interment in the church cemetery. The Rev. Dion Brown will officiate with the Rev. Gerald Horne assisting. Pallbearers will be Scott Bass, Devin Bass, Terry Hurst, Victor Hurst, Craig Hurst and Stacy West. The family will be receiving friends at 3534 Lower Meigs Rd., Meigs.
Mr. Hurst is survived by his daughters, Cathy Poppell and husband, Wyatt, of Darien, GA Tracy Bass and husband, Danny, of Thomasville, GA; a son, DeWayne Hurst of Meigs, GA; grandchildren, Jennifer West of Meigs, Shelly West of Meigs, Tera Willis of Darien, GA, Scott Bass of Thomasville, Devin Bass of Thomasville; a great-grandson, Taylor Woods of Meigs and a brother, Claxton Hurst.

to Nann McElvey McPherson. He was a American Tobacco Company Buyer and managed Eubanks Timber Company and a member of Hand Memorial United Methodist Church.

Mr. Lloyd Ellis Layton, 84, passed away on Sunday, May 16, 2010. He was a long time resident of Meigs and passed away at the home of his granddaughter. Born in Grady County, Georgia on August 25, 1925, he was the son of the late William Frank and Lelia NeSmith Layton. He was a veteran of the United States Army and a member of Meigs Baptist Church where he served as a deacon for many years. He was a retired carpenter and the husband of the late Mary Kathren Jones Layton.
