Dr. Joe Franklin Phelps
Dr. Joe Franklin Phelps was 84 years old, born in Decatur, GA. raised in Decatur and attended Decatur High School. Joined the Navy on September 1, 1942 serving aboard the Destroyer USS Jenkins during World War II. This highly decorated destroyer served with the USS Fletcher, USS French, USS McGinty and the Pacific Reserve Fleet San Diego, California. Joe Phelps received the following World War II Medal awards: American Area Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, European African Campaign Medal, Philippine Liberation Medal, World War II Victory Medal.

Ida Elizabeth “Betty” Brooks, 81, of Monticello died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2007. Her parents were the late William Howell Brady and Corrie Griffith Brady Davis of Madison and later Buckhead, GA. Her beloved sister, Frances Brady Anderson, of Atlanta predeceased her. Mrs. Brooks was born in Madison, GA. May 26, 1925 and was always proud to call Madison her hometown. She graduated from Madison High School in 1942. She attended business school in Atlanta and later traveled to Hawaii where she worked in the Civil Service. She married the love of her life while in Hawaii in 1945.

Mrs. Laurie Upshaw Hale of Social Circle died January 31, 2007. She was born May 1, 1910 in Social Circle, the daughter of Ruby Cook Upshaw and Sanders Upshaw. Mrs. Hale was devoted to her family and to her church, the First Baptist Church of Social Circle. She was preceded in death by her husband: Fred Charles Hale, with whom she operated Fred C. Hale Grocery in Social Circle for many years. She was a member of the Social Circle Garden Club, the United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Lewis Brown, 82, of Monroe died January 30, 2007. A native and life long resident of Walton County, he was a son of the late James Brown and Stella Malcom Brown. He was married to Martha Jim Willingham Brown until her death in 1989. He was a founding member of the Walton County Soil and Water Conservation District and was a former Walton County Commissioner. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army and was retired from General Motors. He was a member of Harmony Baptist Church.

MSgt. Richard Griffin Keesee, USAF (Ret) Richard Keesee, Warner Robins, 78, passed away on Wednesday, May 2, 2007. Mr. Keesee was born on April 24, 1929 in Baltimore, Md. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. A career veteran, MSgt. Keesee retired from the United States Air Force after earning his rank of MSgt. He served during the Vietnam Era and the Korean Conflict. MSgt. Keesee was a Bronze Star Recipient. In addition to his military career as a Jet Engine Mechanic, he also retired from civil service at Robins Air Force Base where he was employed as an Aircraft Engine Mechanic. MSgt. Keesee loved his family and took great pride in time spent with them. He was an avid race car fan, enjoyed fishing, and wood crafting. His parents, Richard and Ann Keesee, and sister, Rita Delmonico, all preceded him in death.

Sue Owen, 54, of Monroe died on May 1, 2007. She was born on Jan. 30, 1953 in Polk Co. Georgia to the late Dorothy Childress and RB Waddell. Sue was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She was dedicated to serving her Lord Jesus, family, Pastors, and church family, ministering love to all she met. She was a member of the Emmanuel Praise Church in Monroe, Ga. She spent the last years of her life traveling the United States with her husband in ministry sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ to all, but in particular to the biker world filled with the people she loved so much.

James (Jim) Nunnally Williamson died may 1, 2007 at Budd Terrace in Atlanta. Services were held Thursday, May 3 at the First United Methodist Church in Monroe, with burial following at Rest Haven Cemetery. The Rev. Felton Harden and the Rev. Margaret Adams officiated. Pallbearers were: Wayne Blackwood, Bill Jacobs, Stewart Long, Guy Long, Doug Noonan, Roy Roberts, Brown Thornton, and Bruce Willamson with the VFW post members serving as honorary pallbearers. Jim, a life long resident of Monroe was born on April 3, 1920. He was the son of the late Hugh Brewster Willamson and Sarepta Nunnally Williamson. He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Miriam Brown Williamson; siblings: Hugh Brewster Williamson, Jr. and Mary Talbot Williamson Anderson.
