Bernice D. Nettles
Bernice D. Nettles, age 84, of Alma, passed away Friday evening, July 30, 2004 at the Bacon County Hospital after a lengthy illness.
She was a native of Pierce County; but, had lived in Bacon County most of her life. She was daughter of the late Moses Durrance and Carrie O’Neal Durrance and wife of the late Lee Roy Nettles. She was also preceded in death by: a daughter, Latrelle Sapp; one brother Johnny Durrance; two sisters, Becky Godfrey and Effie Durrance and one grandson Dewayne Holton, Jr.
Survivors include: three sons, Tony and Carlos Nettles both of Alma and Ricky Nettles and wife Betty of Nicholls; one daughter, Christine Crosby and husband Lenn of Alma; two stepdaughters, Laverne Sermons of Alma and Louise Allen and husband Ernest of Jacksonville and one sister Maude Brown of Hawkensville.
Survivors also include eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and nine stepgrandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday morning at 11:00 a.m. from the chapel of Crosby Funeral Home with Rev. Benny Norris and Rev. Jack Nettles officiating.

Active pallbearers were: Mike and Johnny Taylor, Mike Hersey, Sammy Reliford, Jason Medders and Jerry Nettles. All those in attendance were considered as honorary escort.

Barney Jerome (Jerry) Lewis
Barney Jerome (Jerry) Lewis, age 55, of Alma passed away Tuesday afternoon, July 20, 2004 at his residence after an extended illness. He was a native of Milford, Connecticut but had lived in this area most of his life. He was son of the late Barney James Lewis and Geroma Hutchenson Lewis of Baxley.
Survivors include: his wife of 34 years, Lee Ann Adams Lewis of Alma; a son, Barney Bruce Lewis of Alma; two daughters, Lee Anna Rose Lane and husband Johnny and Jill Suzanne Lewis, all of Alma and one granddaughter, Breanna Marie Lane of Alma.
Funeral services were held Friday morning at 11 a.m. from the chapel of Crosby Funeral Home with Rev. Gray H. Robinson officiating. iIntermentfollowed in Asbury Church cemetery in Appling County.
Active pallbearers were; Daniel Roberts, Roy Lewis, Herman Adams, John Adams, Charlie Adams, Bruce Adams and Mike Brown. All those in attendance were considered honorary escorts.

Annette Sweat
Annette Sweat, age 82, of Alma, passed away Monday night, July 19, 2004 at Twin Oaks after an extended illness.
She was a native of Bacon County and daughter of the late Charles Henry McLean and Vermell Lott McLean, wife of the late Lomis Sweat.
She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Ann Sutter. Annette was a Para Professional with the Elementary School System for 17 years. She was a member of Douglas Chapel Baptist Church.
Survivors include: one son, Ricky Sweat of Alma; one daughter, Susan Gunby and husband, Tom of Atlanta and two brothers, James McLean of North Carolina and J. D. McLean of Alma. Also, Four grandchildren also survive; Joshua Sutter, Little Rock and Dan, Matt and Mallory Sweat, all of Alma.
Funeral services were held Thursday morning at 11 a.m. at Douglas Chapel Baptist Church with Rev. Randy Ray officiating. iIntermentfollowed in the church cemetery.
Active pallbearers were: Danny, Jackie and James Ernest McLean, Al and Mike Sweat, Ben Lott and Freddy Jackson. Honorary escorts were The Joy Sunday School Class and employees and Residence of Twin Oaks.

Roderick L. Johnson, Sr.
Roderick L. Johnson, Sr., age 74, of Pine Level Church Road in Alma passed away early Saturday morning, July 17, 2004, at his residence following a short illness.
He was a native of Bacon County and the husband of the late Mildred Sibley Johnson and son of the late James “Dock” Johnson and Mildred Wilcox Johnson. Mr. Johnson was also preceded in death by: two brothers, James Jack Johnson and Robert P. Johnson; a sister, Virginia Jo Johnson Williams; a step-brother, Cadmus Wilcox and a step-sister, Marie Futch.
He was retired from CSX Mechanical Department after 39 years. He was also a veteran of the Korean Conflict serving in the U.S. Air Force and he was a member of Pine Level Free Will Baptist Church.
Survivors include: one son, Roderick Johnson, Jr. and wife Gail of Alma; three daughters, Robin Douglas and husband Jerald, Lisa Bennett and husband Jerry and Leslie Carver and husband Rev. Dale, all of Alma; one brother, Bill Johnson of Alma; one sister, Elizabeth W. Jones of Alma; one step-brother, Jack Wilcox of Jacksonville and one step-sister Patricia Peterson of Folkston. Survivors also include: seven grandchildren, Joni Lee, Kirk Bennett, Luke Carver, Adam Carver, Levi Johnson and Lindsay Johnson, all of Alma and Leigh Aldrich of Waycross and two great-grandchildren, Cami Aldrich of Waycross and MyKella Lee of Alma.
Private family graveside services were held on Sunday, July 18, 2004 at 1:30 p.m. at the family cemetery with Rev. Roger Daniels officiating. Memorial services were held at Sunday at 2 p.m. at Pine Level Free Will Baptist Church with Rev. Lowell Lee and Rev. Tommy Daniels officiating.
Active pallbearers were: Jay Williams, Mike Williams, Stephen Williams, Gary Johnson, Brent Johnson and Freddy Daniels. CSX employees served as honorary escorts.

Mary Sue Smith
Mary Sue Smith, age 72, of Alma passed away Tuesday afternoon, July 13, 2004 in Twin Oaks Nursing home after an extended illness. She was a native of Bacon County and daughter of the late Tilton Meeks and Maymie Wheeler Meeks.
Survivors include: four sons, Larry Dainel of Cumings, Gary Dainel of Winter Haven, David Miller of Mershon and Neil Miller of Jefferson; two daughters, Gail McAninch of Hollister and Terry Saylor of Haines City; one brother, Jimmy Donald Meeks of Alma, and two sisters, Betty L. Smith of Alma and Hannah M. Flynn of Greenville. Eleven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren also survive.
Memorial services were held Saturday morning at 11 a.m. from the chapel of Crosby Funeral Home.
R. Lehman Lanier
R. Lehman Lanier, age 85, of Alma, passed away Saturday afternoon, July 17, 2004 at his residence after a short illness. He was a native of Candler County, but had lived in Bacon County since 1960. He was the son of the Late Jim Lanier and Lottie Williams Lanier and was also preceded in death by a brother, DuBignon Lanier of Albany.
Lehman was retired C.E.O. of Satilla Rural Electric Membership Corporation, a member of the Alma Lions Club, member of the Alma First Baptist Church and a veteran of WW II, serving in the U. S. Navy.
Survivors include: his wife, Myrtice L. Lanier of Alma; one son, Lynn M. Lanier and wife Rene of Marietta; two brothers, John Wallace Lanier of Macon and Glynn H. Lanier of Somerset; four sisters, Dorothy L. Kenerly of Jesup, Eudelle L. Graham of Dunwoody, Peggy L. Peek of Decatur and Patsy L. Murray of Cacye; and two grandchildren, Amanda Cayleen Lanier and Brett Lehman Lanier, both of Marietta. Many nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the Alma First Baptist Church with Rev. Richard Johnson officiating. iIntermentfollowed in Rosemary Primitive Baptist Church cemetery in Metter.

John ‘Junior’ Rewis II
John “Junior” Rewis II age 77 passed away Tuesday, July 6, 2004, Fort Worth, Florida. Mr. Rewis, a Bacon County native had been living in Lake Worth for the past 57 years.
Mr. Rewis was the founder of Rewis Roofing Co in West Palm Beach Florida. Mr. Rewis was a U.S. Army veteran and served in WWII.
He is survived by: his wife of 59 years, Mary Jane Rewis of Lake Worth Florida; his children: John Crews of Lake Worth Florida, Alex Crews of West Palm Beach Florida, and Jerry (Janet) Rewis of Lake Worth Florida. Also surviving are five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; his brother, Algerine Rewis of West Palm Beach Florida; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was held Friday, July 9, 2004 at the Chapel of Dorsey-E. Earl Smith Memory Gardens Funeral Home in Lake Worth Florida. iIntermentfollowed in the Lake Worth Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Glenn Darvis Harrison
Glenn Darvis Harrison age 73 passed away Wednesday afternoon, July 7, 2004 at the Satilla Regional Medical Center after a brief illness. He was a native of Bacon County but had lived many years in St. Mary’s before moving back to Bacon County in 1974. He was preceded in death by: his parents, Stephen and Eunice Sellers Harrison and a brother, Kenneth Harrison.
Mr. Harrison was a retired supervisor with Gilman Paper Co. in St. Mary’s. He was also a farmer in the Coffee Community of Bacon County. He attended several churches in Bacon and Camden Counties. He was also a veteran serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.
He is survived by: his wife of 54 years, Jessie P. Harrison of Alma; two sons Terry Harrison and Tony Harrison and wife Dawn, all of Alma; three grandchildren Kevin, Hope and Stephen Harrison, all of Alma and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
A funeral service was held Saturday in the chapel of Smith Funeral Home. iIntermentfollowed in the Friendship Methodist Church cemetery in Bacon County. Smith Funeral Home in Blackshear was in charge of the arrangements.
Bobby Ray Tanner
Bobby Ray Tanner, age 61, of Alma passed away suddenly Thursday, June 10, 2004 in Waycross. He was a native of Bailey, North Carolina but had lived in Alma the past 59 years.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Billy Tanner. Bobby had served in the U. S. Army during the Viet Nam War.
Survivors include: his parents, J. L. Tanner and Geraldine Boykin Tanner of Alma; his wife, Audrey Rigdon Tanner of Alma; one son, Jimmy Tanner and wife Lorri Palmer Tanner of Monroe, one daughter, April Overstreet of Monroe; one brother, Mickey Tanner and wife Linda of Waycross and one sister, Judy Nipper and husband James of Alma. Also surviving, two grandchildren, Rachael Overstreet and Nick Tanner both of Monroe.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, June 13, 2004 at Wesley Chapel Southern Congregational Methodist Church with Rev. T. F. Yawn, Rev. J. M. Rigdon and Rev. Tommy Rigdon officiating. iIntermentfollowed in Wolf Pit Cemetery.

Grace Juanita Pittman
Grace Juanita Pittman, age 90 passed away Monday, July 5, 2004.
Mrs. Pittman was born in Alma, Georgia to the late Floyd and Lennie Hayes. She was member of the Second Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by: her late husband of 63 years, Claude Pittman; infant son, Dallas Claude Pttman; six brothers and sisters; son-in-law Robert Mackie, Jr. and grandson, Robert Mackie III.
She was survived by: her children: Waunelle Mackie, Vaughnzelle Janik (Woody, Sr.) and grandchildren, Diana Bolton (Hennie), Mobile; Woody Janik, Jr. (Linda); Lance Janik; Mark Janik; great-grandchildren: Matthew Malone (Tammy); Jason Janik (Jaime); Staci Janik; Jessica Makie, Jackson and great-great-grandchildren, Katie Malone and Lilyan Janik.

Ray Hardwick
Ray Hardwick, age 64, of Alma died early Friday morning, July 2, 2004 at his residence after an extended illness.
He was a native of Appling County, but had lived in Bacon County most of his life. Ray was the son of the late Eldon Hardwick and Beatrice Carter Hardwick.
Ray was preceded in death by: three brothers, Harold, Bobby and James Earl Hardwick and a sister, Eudine Hardwick. He was also a member of Mount Pleasant New Congregational Methodist Church.
Survivors include: his wife, Willene Lord Hardwick of Alma; two sons, Marvin (Beaver) Hardwick and Curtis Hardwick both of Alma; two daughters, Kitty Reynolds and husband Jimmy and Charlotte Waters all of Alma and one sister, Audine Davis of Alma.
Four grandchildren also survive: James Hardwick, Rusty, Dusty and Kevin Waters all of Alma and two great-grandchildren: James Hardwick and Katlyn Mullis both of Alma. Also a special great nephew; Brandon Lee.
