Johnnie B. Gibbs
Johnnie B. Gibbs, age 72, of Nicholls passed away Wednesday, September 8, 2004 at Twin Oaks Convalescent Center in Alma.
Mr. Gibbs was born on January 3, 1932 in Ben Hill County to the late Wesley and Bertha Lee Palmer Gibbs. He lived most of his life in Ben Hill County but for the past three years he has lived in Nicholls.
Johnnie was a retired farmer and a former employee of Harper Motor Line in Fitzgerald. He was a former recipient of the Ben Hill County Young Farm Award. Mr. Gibbs was also a member of the Salem Baptist Church in Ben Hill County and was an avid hunter and fisherman.
Survivors include his wife, Alice C. Gibbs of Nicholls; one son, Johnnie B. “Jay” Gibbs of Alma; one daughter-in-law, Angie Gibbs of Nicholls; three grandchildren, Vickie Kitchens, Kristie Smith and Jackie Fred Smith, all of Nicholls; three great-grandchildren, Dustin, Chad and Jessica Kitchens, all of Nicholls and four sisters, Evelyn Mays, Peggy Griffin, Minnie Gibbs and Betty Gibbs, all of Ben Hill County.
Graveside services were held September 9 at 3 p.m. at Salem cemetery in Ben Hill County with Rev. Tommy Land, Jr. and Rev. J.A. Clements officiating.

Earl Marlow Yarbrough
Earl Marlow Yarbrough, age 95, of Jacksonville, Florida passed away early Wednesday night, September 8, 2004 at the St. Mary’s Convalescent Center after a short illness.
He was a native of Pierce County. He was a son of the late Earl R. Yarbrough and Martha Padgett Yarbrough and was preceded in death by a brother, Leo Yarbrough.
Survivors include a sister, Frances Yarbrough Thompson of St. Mary’s, one niece, Martha Bailey of St. Mary’s, two nephews, David Thompson of Statesboro and Bill Brannen of Birmingham, AL.
Graveside services were held Saturday morning, September 11 at Antioch Church cemetery with Rev. R. C. James officiating.
Dorothy Valdese Gettys
Dorothy Valdese Gettys, age 70, of Alma passed away suddenly Sunday morning, September 12, 2004 in Memorial Medical Center in Savannah.
She was a native of Pierce County but had lived in Bacon County most of her life. Valdese was daughter of the late Doc Hodge and Inez Head Hodge.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her late husband, James Walter Medders. She was also a member of Alma Tenth Street Church of God.
Survivors include her husband, Frank Gettys of Alma; five sons, James E. Medders and wife Hilda of Baxley, Gary B. Medders and wife Linda of Auburn, Craig Medders and wife Sharon, Zelman Neil Medders and wife Debra and Tim N. Medders and wife Kelly, all of Alma; one daughter, Margaret Bruner and husband Danny of Alma and one half sister, Jeanne Dooly of Jacksonville. Also fifteen grandchildren and six great- grandchildren survive.
Funeral services were held Wednesday morning at Alma Church of God with Rev. Steve Pittman and Rev. Mark Carver officiating. iIntermentfollowed in Rose Hill Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Scott Medders, Joey Yawn, Ryan Medders, Stacey Medders, Christopher Medders, Jonathan Medders, Alvin Medders and Bryan Carter. Honorary pallbearers were The Searchers Sunday School Class and South Ga. Easy Riders.

Myrtle Inez Tanner Broome
Myrtle Inez Tanner Broome passed away Saturday morning, September 4, 2004 at Satilla Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.
Born in the Appling County community of Taylortown to the late LaVina Teston and Rubin Wilson Tanner, she lived in Alma most of her life. Along with her late husband C.J. Broome owned and operated The Alma Times for about twenty years. In addition to the Alma Times, they owned other weekly newspapers in South Georgia as well as various businesses including Times Supply and Photography in Alma, Office Machines and Equipment Co. and The Classified Store in Waycross, where she has lived for 36 years. In earlier years, She was active in her husband’s campaign for State Representative, and as he served in the House, she ran the business. In 1958, with her two children in tow, she “politicked” across the state of Georgia in her husband’s bid for Lt. Govenor.
She is also preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters.
She is survived by: two daughters, Lou Jena and Lynda Sue, two grandsons, two great-grandchildren, three step grandchildren and two step great-grandchildren.
A graveside service was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, September 5, 2004 at Oakland Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the American Heart Association, National Center, 7272 Greenville Ave., Dallas, TX 75231.
Ethel Miles
Ethel Miles, age 85, of Mershon passed away early Monday morning, September 6, 2004 in the Bacon County Hospital after a short illness.
She was a native of Charlton County, but had lived most of her life in Bacon County. Ethel was a daughter of the late Archie Crews and Julia Fullard. She was preceded in death by her husband Archie Miles. She was also a member of Ebenezer Advent Christian
Church.
Survivors include: one son, Winston Miles and wife Sara of Alma; one stepson, Edsel Miles and wife Carol of Alma; two brothers, Darrell Deen of Thomson and Lavelle Deen of Bickley; three sisters, Eula Dixon, Oletha Joins and Reatha Vickers, all of Alma, six grandchildren, Jimmy, Jody, John and James Miles and Judy Rowland, all of Alma and Janet Buccahan of Brasselton. Also eleven great-grandchildren survive.
Funeral services were held Thursday morning at 11 a.m. at Wesley Chapel Church with Rev. Hilton Morgan officiating. iIntermentfollowed in the church cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Bill and Edward Jordan, J. R. and Buddy Miles, Jerry Miles and James Henry Carter. All those in attendance were considered honorary escorts.

Linda Faye (Pinky) Thompson
Linda Faye (Pinky) Thompson, age 52, of Alma passed away early Tuesday evening, August 31, 2004 at St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Savannah after a lengthy illness.
She was a native of Ben Hill County but had lived in Bacon County most of her life. Linda was the daughter of the late Young Jessie Smith and Wilder Ione Satterfield Smith. She was also a member of the New Lacy Church of God.
Survivors include: her husband, Phelan Thompson of Alma; three sons, Jessie Thompson, Brad Thompson and Scottie Thompson, all of Alma; two brothers, Wendell Smith of Alma and Jackie Bartlet of Cordele, GA and two grandchildren, Matt Thompson and Amber Thompson both of Brunswick.
Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Crosby Funeral Home with Rev. Calvin Lewis and Rev. Ricky Giles officiating. iIntermentfollowed in New Hope Church Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Scott McCarty, Kevin Foster, Charles Holland, Don Driggers, Jerome Taylor and Johnny Johnson. All those in attendance were considered honorary escorts.

Myrtle Jordan
Myrtle Jordan, age 79, of Alma passed away Wednesday evening, September 1, 2004 at the Bacon County Hospital after an extended illness.
She was a native of Bacon County and the daughter of the late Banner Carter and Alieen Livingston Carter Hobbs and wife of the late Hugh R. Jordan. Myrtle was also preceded in death by two sons, Randy and Benny Jordan. She was a member of Ten Mile Baptist Church. Survivors include: a daughter, Ann Jordan Stewart and husband Jake of Alma; one brother, Liston Carter of Alma.; two sisters, Lorine Bowen and Ernestine Brown both of Milan, GA; two grandchildren, Anissa Hutto and Rocky Willingham of Alma and four great-grandchildren, Anna Mock, Elizabeth Hutto, Tayler Hutto of Alma and Jordan Willingham of Patterson. Also, several nieces and nephews survive.
Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. at Ten Mile Baptist Church with Rev. Brian Gill, Rev. Donnie Tuten and Rev. Joseph Lee officiating.

Denmark King
Denmark King, age 86 of Sylvester, Georgia passed away September 2, 2004 at his residence. He was a native of Decatur County and a minister of the Church of God. Denmark was the son of the late Ethel Lee Lynn King and the late Jessie Glenn King. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Harvey Brewster King.
Survivors include: his wife, Beatrice Taylor King of Sylvester; two sons, Glendon Mark King of Mobile, Alabama and David Ray King of Poulan; a daughter, Martha Giles Godwin of Poulan; three brothers, Grover King of Omaha, Raymond King of Bainbridge and Lenard Allen King of Donalsonville; four sisters, Edith King of Donalsonville, Sadie King Hargraves, Onez King Lee and Eloise King Connell, all of Bainbridge; eight grandchildren, Sharon Pierce of Atlanta, Ricky Giles of Alma, Michelle Reddick of Noblesville, Geoffrey King of San Diego, Hope King of Sylvester, Timothy Spieker of Calhoun, Michael Spieker of Poulan and Ginger Morris of Pineville and three great-grandchildren, Aaron Giles, Ashley Giles and Austin Giles of Alma.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, September 5 at 4 p.m. at the Cobb Funeral Chapel with Rev. Greg Roberts, Rev. Billy Floyd, Rev. Vernon Fletcher and Rev. Allen Swain officiating. iIntermentfollowed at Cobb Suncrest Memorial Gardens.

Marilyn Futch Guthrie
Marilyn Futch Guthrie, age 75 of Nicholls passed away early Wednesday morning, September 1, 2004 in the Appling County Nursing Home after a short illness.
She was a native of Coffee County and the daughter of the late William Grady Futch and Lou Ethel Cothern Futch. Marilyn was preceded in death by her husband, Elisha James Guthrie. She was also a member of the Nicholls Methodist Church.
Survivors include: one son, James William Guthrie and wife Jan of Eatonton; one daughter, Dr. Brenda G. Gillis and husband Lonnie of Nicholls, five grandchildren, Beth Gillis Priddle of Lisbon, ME, Eva Gillis Martin of Richmond, VA., Ellen Gillis Trowell of Nicholls, James Guthrie of Alexanderia, VA., John Guthrie of Athens, GA. and five great-grandchildren, Kyle and Kody Priddle of Lisbon ME., Michael and Hunter Martin of Richmond, VA., Thomas and Tyler Walden of Nicholls.
Funeral services were held Saturday morning at 11 a.m. from the chapel of Crosby Funeral Home with Rev. Jerry Campbell officiating. A eulogy will be given by her grandson James Guthrie. iIntermentfollowed in Roberts Cemetery.

Sandra L. Deen
Sandra L. Deen, age 45, of Jacksonville passed away late Tuesday afternoon, October 26, 2004 in the Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville after a short illness.
She was a native of Duval County, Florida. Sandra was daughter of the late Rollis E. Deen and Minnie Vinson Deen. She was also a member of the Bible Believers Baptist Church in Jacksonville.
Survivors include her husband, Grady F. Deen of Jacksonville; a step daughter, Brandy Somerset of Jacksonville; four brothers, Edward (Cindy) Deen, Charles (Janet) Deen, Rollis (Mashell) Deen and Jack (Jamie) Deen and one sister, Cheratritt (Pete) Putnam.
Funeral services were held Saturday, October 30 at 2 p.m. at Campground Church with Dr. David Peacock officiating. iIntermentfollowed in the church cemetery.
