James Evans Dixon
James Evans Dixon, age 76, of Surrency passed away Thursday, February 24, 2005 at the Bacon County Hospital after an extended illness.
He was a native and lifelong resident of Appling County, a retired farmer and mechanic.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Lavay and Terry Davis of Surrency, a granddaughter, Misti Baxley of Baxley, a grandson, Kyle Perry of Surrency and a great-granddaughter, Hannah Tyre of Baxley.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, February 27, 2005 in the Swain Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Carlton Rowell and Rev. Martha Beecher.
Active pallbearers were “Doodle Bug” David Carter, Matt Beecher, Robert Mann, Gene Mann, Jerry Kersey, Rat Kersey, Jim Blanton and Kelly Blanton.
Honorary pallbearers were friends and church members of Surrency Community Bible Church. Swain Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Helon Doby
Helon Doby, age 70, of Alma passed away early Saturday, February 26, 2005 at the Bacon County Hospital after an extended.
She was a native of Coffee County, but had lived most of her life in Bacon County. She was daughter of the late Floyd Crews and Felmer Thomas Crews Taylor, was wife of the late Leroy Doby. Helon was a member of The New Lacy Church of God.
Survivors include a son, Billy Ray Tanner and wife Glenda of Lake City, FL; two daughters, Mary L. Meeks and husband Jerry of Alma and Janice Lee and husband Newsome of Dawsonville; one step daughter, Diane Rosen of Clewiston, FL; two brothers, Jimmy Floyd Crews of Alma and Wayne Taylor of Baxley; one sister, Linda Pritchett of Alma and three step sisters, Irene Sutton of Clewiston, FL, Dora Turner and Joyce Hayes, both of Fairview Heights, IL.
Also, seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and four step grandchildren survive.
Funeral services were held Monday, February 28, 2005 at New Lacy Church of God with Rev. Calvin Lewis officiating. iIntermentfollowed in Rose Hill Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Larry Barber, Dr. Perry Streat, Ricky Giles, McKee Carter, Paul Taylor, Wendle Thomas, Danny Kight and Johnny Waters. All those in attendance were considered as honorary escort.

James Ira Vickers
James Ira Vickers, age 51, of Stuart, passed away Thursday, April 28, 2005 at Hospice Martin and St. Lucie in Stuart.
He was born in Alma and was a resident of Stuart for eight years, previously from Okeechobee. He was a member of Plumber’s and Pipe Fitters Local Union #630 of West Palm Beach. He was the son of James and Juanita (Goolsby) Vickers of Okeechobee and formerly from Alma.
He is survived by his wife of 7 years, Patricia “Patty” (Timmerman) Vickers; two daughters, Amber Vickers of Williston and a stepdaughter, Donna Duncan of Rockford, ILL; sons, James I. and Jason Vickers, both of Williston, John and Joseph Vickers, both of Loxahtchee; stepsons, Donald and John Ingram, both of Stuart; sisters, Joyce Vickers of Orlando and Diane Whidden of Loxahtchee and five grandchildren.
A memorial tribute and video presentation was held on Saturday, May 7, 2005 at All County Funeral Home & Crematory.
Arrangements were handled by All County Funeral Home & Crematory, 1010 N.W. Federal Highway, Stuart.
Milton Limon Mercer
Milton Limon Mercer, age 62, of Alma died Monday, May 9, 2005 afternoon in the Bacon County Hospital after an extended illness.
He was a native of Bacon County, but had lived in Florida for many years before moving back to Alma three years ago. Milton was son of the late Limon Mercer and preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Lene Catlette. He was also a retired meat cutter.
Survivors include his mother, Lola Mae Williams Mercer of Alma; one son, Michael William Mercer of Folkston; two daughters, Tracy Mercer and husband Jerry of Jacksonville, Florida and Debbie Stacks and husband Marcus of Jacksonville, Florida and four sisters, Inell Smith and husband Lewis, Delora Music and husband William, Amelia Dyal and husband Billy Mac, of all Alma and Judy Lott of Broxton. Also four grandchildren survive.
Funeral services were held Thursday, May 12, 2005 from the chapel of Crosby Funeral Home with Rev. Dean Kapp officiating. iIntermentfollowed in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Larry Lee ‘Bulldog’ Holton
Larry Lee (Bulldog) Holton, age 50, of Alma died, early Thursday morning, May 12, 2005 at Satilla Regional Medical Center after a short illness.
He was a native of Bacon County, son of the late M.C. Holton, was in the timber business as a logger and a member of Eastside Baptist Church.
Survivors include his mother, Kathleen Rewis Holton of Alma; his wife, Brenda Medders Holton of Alma; three sons; Larry Shawn Holton, Casey Lee Holton and wife Michelle and Audie Holton, all of Alma; one daughter, Kelli Holton of Alma; one brother, Jody Holton and wife Michelle of Alma; three sisters; Carolyn Clements and husband Pee Wee of Nicholls, Janice Simmons of Alma and Wendy Holton of Tomoca, Washington and two grandchildren, La’Shell and Brody Holton both of Alma.
Funeral services were held Saturday, May 14, 2005 from the chapel of Crosby Funeral Home with Rev. Mark Barth and Rev. Herman Moore officiating. iIntermentfollowed in PineLawn Cemetery.

Mildred Carver
Mildred Carver, age 81, of Alma died early Monday morning, May 16, 2005 at Twin Oaks Nursing Home after an extended illness. She was a native of Laurens Co., Ga. but had lived in Flordia for many years before moving to Bacon Co. in 1976. Mildred was daughter of the late W. L. Silas and Ethel M. Crumpton. She was preceded in death by her husbands Herman Laster and Frank Carver, one brother, Muriel Silas and one sister, Mary Nell Royal. Mildred was also a member of Liberty Church of God.
Survivors include six sons, William Earl Laster of Lake Park, FL., Roger Laster of Nicholls, Ronnie Laster & Tyronne Carver of Tavares, FL., Gary Laster of Clermont, FL. and Roger E. Laster of Sellersburg, IN. One daughter, Ila Jean Price of Okeechobee, FL. One step daughter, Juanita Boatright of Mershon. One sister, Martha Jean Hillyer of Birmingham, AL. Fourteen grandchildren, several great- grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and several step grand and great-grandchildren survive.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 18, 2005 from the chapel of Crosby Funeral Home with Rev. Richard Lewis and Rev. Billy Murray officiating.

Bobbie Ann Howell
Bobbie Ann Howell, 65, passed away Monday evening, May 9, 2005 at the Satilla Regional Medical Center in Waycross, after an extended illness.
She had been a resident of Baptist Village for many years. A native of Bacon County, she had lived most of her life in Orlando, FL, before moving to Waycross in 1987.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Chloris V. Howell and Lorene Carter Howell and by a brother, LaCarl Howell.
She was a retired bookkeeper and volunteered with the libraries at the schools in her community. She was also a member of Shady Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include her son Julian F. Bennett Jr. (wife Ginni) of Melbourne, FL; two grandchildren, Zachary Bennett and Megan Bennett, both of Melbourne, FL; brothers, Charles V. Howell (wife Shirley) of Greenville, SC, and Wayne D. Howell (wife Nancy) of Ocala, FL, and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, May 11, 2005 at Shady Grove Baptist Church. iIntermentfollowed in the church cemetery.

John B. Holton
John B. Holton, age 65, passed away Sunday, May 8, 2005 at his residence under the care of hospice.
He was a native of Coffee County, and lived the past 35 years in Liberty County. He was a U.S. Army veteran. He worked the past 35 years for Coastal EMC as a foreman. He was a member of the Hinesville Masonic Lodge, the Scottish Rite and Alee Temple in Savannah. He was of the Baptist Faith.
Survivors include his wife, Hazel P. Holton of Midway; two sons, Joe Holton of Midway and Luke Herrington of Alma; two daughters, Rhonda Geer of Midway and Julie Goll of Japan; three brothers, Leon Holton, Jr. and Buddy Holton of Midway and Quincy Holton of Cummings; six sisters, Abby Martinez and Lavada Sweat of Waycross, Lillie Mae Taylor, Betty Nettles and Marie Hutchinson of Nicholls and Virginia Cooper of West Green and six grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, May 13, 2005 at Carter Funeral Home Oglethorpe Chapel with Rev. Dennis Bryant and Rev. Neal Smith officiating. Burial will be in Daniel Baptist Church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Kenny Holton, Larry Holton, Ricky Holton, Curtis Sapp, Kyle Butler and Walter Burns.

Nora Jean Nail
Nora Jean Nail, age 53, of Baxley passed away Sunday afternoon, May 8, 2005 in the Appling County Hospital after an extended illness.
She was a native of Bacon County, daughter of the late E.D. Taylor and Maybelle Holton. She was preceded in death by three brothers, L.P., Bill and Nathan Taylor. Nora was a member of Zoar Baptist Church in Baxley.
Survivors include her husband, J.W. Nail of Baxley; three sons, Kenny Morgan and wife Denise of Alma, Wesley Gilliard and wife Denise and Jeffery Morgan and wife Jessica, all of Nicholls; two daughters, Gloria Davis and husband Dewayne of Nicholls and Eloise Deen and husband Anthony of Douglas; two brothers, Eddie Lee Taylor of Alma and Roy Lee Taylor of Moultrie and two sisters, Margaret Barber and Millie Taylor, both of Alma.
Also nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild survive.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 11, 2005 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Crosby Funeral Home with Rev. Jeff Waters, Rev. Billy Mac Dyal and Chris Nail officiating. iIntermentfollowed in Wolf Pit Church cemetery.

Lois Hutchinson
Lois Hutchinson, age 80, of Alma passed away Monday morning, May 2, 2005 at the Bacon County Hospital after an extended illness.
She was a native of Bacon County, daughter of the late Staten Taylor and Clara Deen Taylor. Lois was also preceded in death by a daughter, Winnette Hutchinson Hill and a sister, Sonya Taylor.
Survivors include her husband, L.W. Hutchinson of Nicholls; two sons, Keneth Hutchinson of Newbury, MO and Steven Hutchinson and wife Marie of Nicholls; two daughters, Patricia Hutchinson Hamby and husband Knox of Acworth and Sharon Hutchinson Boothe and husband Joseph of Prince George, VA and two sisters, Opal Taylor Carter of Port Wentworth and Leona Taylor Schlene and husband Richard of Michigan City, IN. Fourteen grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren also survive.
