L.L. Hill
L.L. Hill, age 82, of Jacksonville, Florida passed away Friday, July 29, 2005 at a Hospice Center in Jacksonville after a short illness.
He was a native of Brantley Co. but had lived in Jacksonville since 1958. He was son of the late Oscar Emmett Hill and Lula Manning and was husband of the late Wilma Martin Hill. He was also preceded in death by a son, Roger Hill. He was a veteran of WWII serving in the U. S. Army.
Survivors include a son, Billy Shane Hill of Jacksonville, Florida and a daughter, Cheryl Hooker and husband Buddy of Pulaski, Georgia. Also five grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren survive.
Funeral services were held Monday, August 1, 2005 from the chapel of Crosby Funeral Home with Rev. Edmund Thrift and Rev. Nathan Smith officiating.

Active pallbearers were Chris Martin, Bo and Robbie Murray, L.V. Wrice, Gill Stockton and Harold Davis.

Phillip Mills
Phillip Lamar Mills, age 36 of Nicholls, Georgia passed away Friday, July 22, 2005 at Coffee Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Mills was born May 17, 1969 in Ware County, son of Sara Ann Carter Mills nd the late Burl Guthrie Mills, Jr. He was employed with Kentec. He was a member of Forest Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Dina Marie Mixon Mills of Nicholls; son, Conner Mills of Nicholls; mother, Sara Ann Mills of Nicholls; brothers, Tim (April) Mills and Russell (Tammy) Mills of Nicholls and nephews, Reed Mills and Rusty Mills, both of Nicholls.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 27, 2005 at Forest Grove Baptist Church near Nicholls with Rev. Jimbo Stead, Rev. Lonnie Spikes and Rev. John Thomas officiating. Michael and Jan Thomas, William and Jackie Smith sang “I Can’t Even Walk, ” “Look What I’ve Traded” and “Amazing Grace” with Ida Ann Byrd, pianist. Burial followed in Forest Grove Church Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Lewis Vickers, Eddie Butts, Kevin Thomas, Andy Smith, J.G. Gillis, Scott Kirkland, Gary Seawright and Chris Joyce. Honorary pallbearers were personnel of Kentec, George Morgan, Chuck Rawlins, Mike Waters, Jim Olliff, Shawn Knight, Bud Perry, Glenn Conners and Stan Williams and members of the Wilsonville Fire Department.
Katie Marie Tanner King
Katie Marie Tanner King, age 73, of Waycross Georgia passed away on Thursday, July 21, 2005, at her home following an extended illness.
Mrs. King was born, August 23, 1931, in Alachua County, Florida, daughter of the late Albert & Geroude Davis Tanner. Mrs. King was preceded in death by her husband Robert L. King, and brothers, Norman Tanner and Sandy Tanner.
Survivors include one daughter; Sandra Turner Dean of Hoboken; two sons, David Allen (Deloris) Turner of Fayetteville, North Carolina, Danny Morris (Donna) Turner of Waycross; three sisters, Betty Heaton of Polk City, Florida, Patsy Burnam of West Green, JoAnne Waldron of Douglas and four brothers, Claude Tanner of Branford, Florida, Albert Tanner of Hilliard, Florida, Bobby Tanner of Orlando, Florida, and Gene Tanner of Douglas. Six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services were held Sunday, July 24, 2005, at the Sims Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Herbert Box officiating. A Poetic Tribute “Katie” was given by Patsy Burnam, Soloist, Renee Waldron sang, “Too Busy” with Sam Jordan, Pianist; Also, taped selections of “Take My Hand”, “Peace In The Valley” and “Amazing Grace” were provided. A testimony was given by Betty Heaton. Burial followed in the Roberts cemetery near Nicholls Georgia. Grandsons & nephews served as pallbearers. Sims Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Bertie Lee Rigdon
Bertie Lee Rigdon, age 79, of Green Cove Springs, Florida passed away Saturday, July 23, 2005.
Mrs. Rigdon was born on November 10, 1925 in Alma, Georgia to A.J. and Mattie Taylor. She was a secretary and bookkeeper for the Coca Cola Plant. She had resided in this area for over 50 years and was a member of Russell Baptist Church. She enjoyed reading her Bible and spending time with her beloved family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Mason Rigdon.
Survivors include her sons, Larry (Sue) Rigdon of Michigan and Terry (Lori) Rigdon of Middleburg, Florida; daughters, Donell (David) Wilson of Orange Park, Florida, Betty Gibson of Green Cove Springs, Florida and Gloria Shaver of Middleburg, Florida; 15 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, July 27, 2005 at Russell Baptist Church with Reverend Ron Baker officiating. iIntermentfollowed in Rosee Hill cemetery in Alma.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in her name may be made to the American Cancer Society or contributions in the name of Baby Girl Rigdon may be made to the Spina Bifida Foundation.

John Henry Hawkins
John Henry Hawkins, age 78, of Alma passed away Saturday, July 16, 2005 at the Bacon County Hospital after an extended illness.
He was a native of Ben Hill County, but had lived in Alma most of his life. He was son of the late Jasper Jackson Hawkins and Elminnie Graham Hawkins.
He was preceded in death by a wife, Doris Hawkins and two sons, Monroe and Howard Hawkins. John Henry had been employed with M.J. Eason and Sons for many years.
Survivors include a son, Bruce Hawkins of Hazlehurst; two daughters, Dorothy Howard and husband Robert, Sandra Kay Newell and husband Jimmy, all of Alma. Also five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren survive.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 19, 2005 from the chapel of Crosby Funeral Home with Rev. Brian Gill and Rev. Mark Barth officiating. iIntermentfollowed in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Gilbert Cothern
Gilbert Cothern, age 66, of Alma passed away Saturday, July 9, 2005 at his residence after an extended illness.
He was a native of Coffee County but had lived in Alma most of his life. He was son of the late James Alvin Cothern and Leona Scott Cothern and was also preceded in death by a brother, Hubert Cothern.
Gilbert was employed with Satilla REMC for 45 years and was manager of operations and construction when he retired in 2002. He was a member of Friendship Baptist Church where he served as song leader and a deacon for many years.
Survivors include his wife, Eula Wade Cothern of Alma; two sons, Andy (Vickie) Cothern of Alma and Stacy (Teesa) Cothern of Alma; a daughter, DeAnn (David aka Pee Wee) Flanders of Alma; two brothers, David Cothern of Baxley and Don Cothern of Alma; five sisters, Florence Nall, Madgeline Sears, Nadine Crosby, Martha Wade and Dorothy Raulerson, all of Alma and four grandchildren, Blake Martin of Fernandina Beach, Florida, Berry Martin, Chase and Cassie Cothern, all of Alma.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, July 12, 2005 at Friendship Baptist Church with Brother Vernon Dorminey, Brother Kenneth Cox and Dr. Norman Sweeting officiating. iIntermentfollowed in the church cemetery.

Rev. Earl Merritt
Rev. Earl Merritt, 69, of Baxley passed away Saturday, July 16, 2005 at his residence after a brief illness.
Born in Coffee County to the late James Clifton “Cliff” Merritt and Myrtice Williams Merritt he had made his home throughout his life in Douglas, Alma, Waycross and Baxley. He was a Church of God minister serving numerous churches in the South Georgia area. He was a member of the Baxley Church of God. Along with his ministerial duties for the past four years he had worked for Miles-Odum Funeral Home in Waycross.
He was a member of the Alma Lions Club, the Waycross and Alma Kiwanis Club and served as City Chaplain for the cities of Hazlehurst, Ocilla and Adairsville. Along with his parents he was preceded in death by a twin brother, Merle Merritt.
Rev. Merritt is survived by his wife Annie Merritt of Baxley; a daughter, Ophellia Steptoe and her husband Billy of Newnan, Georgia; two sons, Rev. Alvin Merritt and his wife Tammy of Chester, Georgia and James Wesley Merritt and his wife Jana of Alma; five grandchildren, Amber Foster and her husband Ken, Anna Steptoe, Brandon Merritt, Brent Merritt, Jaelyn Merritt; two brothers, Glynn Merritt of Atlanta, Fritz Merritt of Burlington, Iowa; seven sisters, Jean Hersey Rowan of Douglas, Phyllis Burch of Westgreen, Georgia, Mary Annis Peterson of Douglas, Connie McNeese of Broxton, LaDonna Foshee of Cullowhee, North Carolina, Evelyn Clements of Douglas, Louise Brown of Douglas, and numerous, nieces, nephews and other relatives.
A funeral service was held, Tuesday, July 19, 2005 at the Tenth Street Church of God in Alma. Burial followed in Rose Hill Cemetery. All Church of God Ministers have been asked to serve as honorary pallbearers

Jeanette (Ivey) Arnold
Jeanette (Ivey) Arnold, age 59, of Alma passed away suddenly Saturday, July 2, 2005 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Savannah.
She was a native of Bryan County, Georgia but had lived in Alma most of her life. Jeanette was daughter of the late Lamar Ivey and Winnie Napier Ivey and was preceded in death by a brother Gerald Ivey. She was a member of Westside Congregational Methodist Church.
Survivors include a fiancé, Glenn Collins of Nicholls; three sons, Michael (Linnie) Mullis of Nahunta, David (Marie) Mullis and Joey (Connie) Mullis, all of Alma; a daughter, Melanie (Gary) Wines of Alma; four brothers, Dewayne Ivey of Nicholls, Lamar Ivey, Jr and Jack Ivey, both of Jesup and Johnny Ivey of Alma and a sister, Jane Ivey of Alma. Ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren also survive. Also a special little guy, Dylan Mercer.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 5, 2005 from the chapel of Crosby Funeral Home with Rev. Dale Carver officiating. iIntermentfollowed in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Mary Anna Medders
Mary Anna Medders, age 69, of Alma passed away Wednesday, June 29, 2005 at the Bacon County Hospital after a short illness.
She was a native of Atkinson County but had lived in Bacon County since 1938. Mary was daughter of the late Thomas Henry Corbitt and Forrest Lee Cason Corbitt. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Medders, two sons, Lawton and Travis Medders and three brothers, Richard Benny Corbitt, Cereal Thomas Corbitt and Otis Corbitt. She was also a member of Friendship Baptist Church.
Survivors include five sons, Kenneth Dale Medders, Mikel L. Medders (wife, Jennie), all of Nicholls, James Henry Medders (wife, Marie), of Broxton, Roy Keith Medders, Richard L. Medders (wife, Wanda), all of Alma; one brother, Lloyd Phillip Corbitt of Brunswick; one sister, Anna Marie Ganas of Waycross and a half sister, Margaret Cadle of Calhoun. Fourteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren survive.
Funeral services were held Friday, July 1, 2005 at Friendship Baptist Church with Rev. R.B. Gaskins and Rev. Kenneth Cox officiating. iIntermentfollowed in Rose Hill Cemetery.
