Betty Lou Smith
Betty Lou Smith, age 73, of Alma passed away Saturday, March 4, 2006 at the Appling Healthcare System in Baxley after an extended illness.
She was a native of Bacon County, daughter of the late Tilton Meeks and Maymie Wheeler Meeks and preceded in death by a sister, Mary Sue Smith.
Survivors include two sons, Jim Smith of Hayes, VA and Jack Smith and wife, Liz of Round Rock, TX; two daughters, Gwen Todd and husband Frank of Rockledge, FL and Susan Hyde and husband, Jim of Andalusia, AL; one brother, Jimmy D. Meeks of Alma and one sister, Hannah M. Flynn of Greenville, GA. Eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren also survive.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, March 10, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. from the chapel of Crosby Funeral Home with family members officiating.

Cecelia Johnson Anderson
Cecelia Johnson Anderson, age 64, passed away Monday, March 6, 2006 in the LaGrange Hospice.
A native of Alma, Mrs. Anderson had lived on St. Simon’s Island for the past 19 years where she had worked as a floral designer. She attended St. Simon’s Island Community Church. In retirement Cecelia’s pride and joy were working in her yard, tending to her vegetable garden in the St. Simon’s Community Garden, and visiting her children and grandchildren.
Mrs. Anderson is preceded in death by her mother, Lillie “Slim” and her father, Henry “Monk” Johnson, both of Alma. Cecelia had returned to Alma in 1978 to join her mother in the family floral business, Johnson’s Florist, established 35 years earlier by her mother.
She is survived by her husband Seymour “Andy” Anderson of St. Simon’s Island; her daughter Julie Weems Smith and husband Gordon “Skip” Smith, Jr. of LaGrange; her son Claude Weems and wife Sharon of Knoxville; her brother Harry T. Johnson and wife Ann of Alma; a sister Susie Taylor Johnson of Nicholls; three step children; 9 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Friday, March 10 from 6:00-8:00 p.m.at Crosby Funeral Home in Alma. The funeral service will be held Saturday, March 11 at 2:00 p.m. in Crosby’s chapel, followed by her interment in the family plot at Rose Hill Cemetery. The family appreciates flowers or contributions to Hospice.

Marion Gussie Meeks Moore
Marion Gussie Meeks Moore, age 83, of Alma passed away early Thursday, March 2, 2006 at the Bacon County Hospital after a short illness.
She was a native of Bacon County, daughter of the late Edward Johnson and Mamie Bagley Johnson and preceded in death by her husband, Daniel W. Meeks, one brother, LaFette Johnson and a sister, Colleen Bennett. Gussie was a retired nurse, school teacher and a member of the Alma United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one son, Darwin Carter and wife, Judy of Alma; two daughters, Pam Byerly and husband, David of Media, PA; Jan Futch and husband, Bobby Hugh of Alma; four grandchildren, Kimberly Pryor, Kandance Carter and John Carer, all of Alma and Jim Carter of North Carolina and one great-grandson, Evan Carter of North Carolina.
Funeral services were held Saturday, March 4, 2006 at 2 p.m. from the chapel of Crosby Funeral Home with Rev. Randy Ray officiating. iIntermentfollowed in Rose Hill Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Tim Carter, David Pryor, Jim Carter and John Carter and Tommy Smith. Honorary pallbearers were the residence and staff of Twin Oaks Nursing Home.

Mary (Kat) Bruner
Mary (Kat) Bruner, age 82, of Alma passed away Tuesday, May 23, 2006 at the Bacon County Hospital after a short illness.
She was a native of Bacon County and daughter of the late Floyd Marion Carter and Vera Douglas Carter. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Lamar Bruner, a son, Benny Bruner and a sister, Johnnie Carter Tillman. She was a bookkeeper for Farmers Enterprise, worked for Alma Housing Authority and also BC Hospital Dietician for many years. Mary was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene.
Survivors include two sons, Danny Bruner and wife Margaret of Alma and Monte Bruner and wife Kay of Smyrna; a daughter-in-law, Margie Bruner of Stone Mountain; two brothers, Buddy Carter of Alma and Dr. Doug Carter of Suwanee; one sister, Marguerite Carter of Alma and three grandchildren, Jamie Bruner of Waycross, Greg Bruner and Kim Pickens, both of Atlanta and five great-grandchildren. Also several nieces and nephews survive.
Funeral services were held Friday, May 26, 2006 at First Church of the Nazarene with Rev. Mark Barth and Rev. Skip Wells officiating. iIntermentfollowed in Pinelawn Cemetery.

Sue Courson Hampton
Sue Courson Hampton, age 77, passes away at Shand’s Hospital Monday, May 22, 2006.
Mrs. Hampton was the owner and operator of Hampton’s Western Wear for many years. A faithful member of Callahan Methodist Church, from 1966 until 2001, where she was an active member of the choir. In May 2001 she joined River Road Baptist Church where she remained a member until her death.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband J.C. Hampton, Jr., parents W.C. and Pearl Courson and a grandson R. Niel Hampton, Jr.
Survivors include three children, Niel (Sandy) Hampton of Callahan, Cindy (Bob) Blinson of Fernandina Beach and Hope Conner of Callahan; grandchildren, Chad and Michael Conner of Callahan, Kristin (Adam) Cover of Hilliard, Matt (Leesa) Edwards of Hoboken, Mandy (Chris) White of Hilliard, Kiley (Brian) Middleton of Folkston, Jennifer (Chad) Whitty of Baxley, Dixie (Will) Moody of Jacksonville, Sally (Brandon) Fouraker of Hilliard; great-grandchildren, Bryce Edwards of Hoboken, Jesse, Haylee and Mason White of Hilliard, Abigail and Allie Middleton of Folkston, Makayin and Conner Cover of Hilliard; a sister, Frances McQuaig Lawrence of Millegeville, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Thursday, May 25 at River Road Baptist Church. Burial followed in Rose Hill cemetery in Alma.
Active pall bearers were her grandsons.

Simeon (Sim) Wade
Simeon (Sim) Wade, age 88, of Perry, FL passed away Thursday, May 25, 2006 at Marshall Health Facility in Perry after an extended illness.
He was a native of Bacon County but had lived in Florida the past 20 years. Sim was son the late Archie P. Wade, Sr. and Annie Smith Wade.
He was preceded in death by his wife Daisy Boatright Wade; two brothers, Archie, Jr. and Carl Wade and four sisters, Mattie Gorday, Pearl Booth, Amanda Buchanan and Freddie Carter.
Survivors include one son, Jack Wade of Yulee, FL; one daughter, Corliss Stephens and husband Charles of Perry, FL and two brothers, Claude Wade of Alma and Holmes Wade of Waycross. Seven grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren survive.
Funeral services were held Saturday, May 27, 2006 at Corinth Free Will Baptist Church with Rev. Charles Barwick officiating. Eulogy was given by grandson-in-law, Rev. Robert (Crickett) Watson. iIntermentfollowed in the church cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Kenny Wade, Ralph Wade, Bill Coggin, Ray Boatright, Buddy Boatright and Ronnie Boatright. All those in attendance were considered honorary escorts.

Leslie Coleman Wilson
Leslie Coleman Wilson, age 44 of Alma, passed away May 16, 2006 at his residence.
Mr. Wilson, son of Clytee and Lonnie C. Wilson, was born September 2, 1961 in Alma, Bacon County, Georgia. “Leslie” as he was affectionately known was a privileged to be loved by many. He was preceded in death by his paternal and maternal grandparents.
He spent all of his years in Bacon County where he grew up and prepared for his life’s journey. He attended the Bacon County Training Center for numerous years. He enjoyed listening to music and talking with family and friends.
Leslie’s family was connected with the First African Baptist Church reverently involving themselves in Christian character.
He leaves to cherish his memories, a caring and devoted family mother, Clytee Wilson of Alma; father, Lonnie C. Wilson of Alma; brothers and sisters, Elester Brown of Alma, Dorothy J. Brown of Alma, Danny (Mae Helen) Brackins of Vero Beach, Florida, Herman (Christine) Mosby of Alma, Fredrick B. Wilson of Alma and Travis (Sandra) Wilson of Alma; one aunt, Willie Pearl Bizzell of Alma; special friends, Gloria Smith of Alma, Minister Dorceil Smiley of Baxley, Reverend Carl Marion of Alma, Joyce Grady of Alma, Annie Laura Folsom of Alma and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services were held Friday, May 19, 2006 at First African Baptist Church with Reverend Stephon Deen presiding. The order of service was prayer by Reverend Stephon Deen; reading of scripture Olde Testament-Reverend Roy Williams and New Testament-Minister Dorceil Smiley; selection by the choir; reflections by Julienne Taylor and Deacon Charles Brown; solo by Richard Taylor and eulogy by Reverend E. Honorary pallbearers were Eddie Wertz, Donald Smith, Bobby Taylor, William Hardy, Deacon Charles Brown and Rosemary Holton. Kenneth R. Murphy, Sr
Kenneth R. Murphy, Sr. age 62, of Alma passed away Wednesday, May 17, 2006 in Memorial Hospital in Savannah after an extended illness.
He was a native of Bacon County and son of the late Dave Murphy and Thetis Rimes Murphy. Kenneth was preceded in death by three brothers, Edison, Larry and Billy Carroll (Boobie) Murphy. He served in the US Army during the Vietnam War and was a member of New Hope Congregational Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Karin Sommer Murphy of Alma; one son, Kenneth R. Murphy, Jr and wife Dawn of Alma; one daughter, Angie M. Bishop and husband Bryant of Alma; one sister, Juanita Brown of Portal, Georgia and one granddaughter, Anna Katlyn Bishop of Alma. Funeral services were held Saturday, May 20, 2006 at New Hope Congregational Methodist Church with Rev. Allen Swain and Rev. Jimmy Cothren officiating. iIntermentfollowed in the church cemetery.

Mildred T. Post
Mildred T. Post, age 94, passed away Thursday, May 18, 2006. She was a native of White Oak, NC and has lived in Alma since 1978.
Mildred was daughter of the late Olivious Tatum and Lizzie Burney Tatum and preceded in death by her husband Denning Post, Sr. and two sisters, Eva Tatum and Virginia Yarchin. She was a retired School Teacher from Ramapo School District (Suffern, NY) where she taught 1st grade for 22 years. She was also a former President Elect of the Bacon County Retired Teachers Association. Mildred always had a smile for everyone she met and spread warmth and happiness to all who knew and loved her. She particularly enjoyed spending time with family and friends at home.
Survivors include her three loving children, Denning Post, Jr. of Statesboro, GA, Linda Cothren of Brunswick, GA and Wayne Post and wife Barbara of Alpharetta, GA and two sisters, Frankie Tatum of Elizabethtown, NC and Ina Ventor of Greenville, NC. She was also a loving and generous Granny to her two grandsons, Mark Cothren and wife Angie and Brian Cothren. And a very special friend and companion, Peggy Howard.
Memorial services were held Monday, May 22, 2006 from the Chapel of Crosby Funeral Home with Rev. Mark Carver officiating. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to the American Heart Association.

Jereline Ivey Ray
Jereline Ivey Ray, age 69, of Callahan, Florida passed away Thursday, May 18, 2006 at Shands Hospital in Jacksonville after a short illness.
She was a native Bacon County but had lived in Callahan, Florida since 1963. Jereline was daughter of the late Elmer Ivey and preceded in death by a sister, Ruby Nell Haskins.
Survivors include her mother, Ida Lee Ivey; husband, Johnnie Lynn Ray of Callahan, Florida; one son, Patrick Lynn Ray and daughter-in-law, Chrissy Ray of Callahan, Florida; three sisters, June McCrea of Alabama, Judy Amis of Woodstock, Georgia and Joan Boatright of Alma and one grandson, Taylor Ray of Callahan, Florida.
Funeral services were held Sunday, May 21, 2006 from the Chapel of Crosby Funeral Home with Rev. Lowell Lee officiating. iIntermentfollowed in Pinelawn Cemetery.
