Roy Hyers

Roy Hyers, age 65, of Alma passed Saturday, November 25, 2006 in St. Vincent’s Hospital after a short illness.
He was a native of Bacon County and son of the late Archie Hyers and Rebecca Barnes Hyers. Roy was preceded in death by five brothers, Ennis Dock, Lamar, Jack, Archie Jr. and Cager Hyers and a sister, Oweda Taylor. He managed the Bacon County Theater for several years.
Survivors include fourteen nieces and nephews and several great nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, November 28, from the chapel of Crosby Funeral Home with Rev. Ernest McCarty officiating. iIntermentfollowed in Friendship Methodist Church Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were; Mark McCarty, Steve Harrell, Robert Sellers, Daniel Nussbaum, Steve Sowell and Charles Johnston. All those in attendance were considered honorary escorts.
Crosby Funeral Home was in charge of all arrangements.

Franklin Mullis

Franklin Mullis, age 58, of Alma passed suddenly at his residence Sunday, November 26, 2006.
He was a native of Bacon County and son of the late John F. Mullis and Pauline Johnson Atkinson. Franklin was retired from CSX Railroad after twenty eight years and a member of the Bacon County Saddle Club.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Tanner Mullis of Alma; one son, Rodney Mullis of Valdosta; two step sons, Henry Taylor of Charleston, South Carolina, and Toby Taylor of Alma; one step daughter, Lisa Medders of Alma; eight grandchildren and one great- grandchild.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, November 29, at Southside Church of God with Rev. Mark Carver and Rev. Pet Hayes officiating. iIntermentfollowed in Rose Hill Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were; Roy F. Crosby, Jeff Little, Trace Medders, Steve Johnson, Ben Johnson and Luke Jarrard. Honorary pallbearers were; Employees an co-workers of CSX Railroad, South Georgia Association Saddle Club and all others in attendance.
Crosby Funeral Home was in charge of all arrangements.

Jeremy Todd Brooks

Jeremy Todd Brooks, age 36, Thomson, Georgia passed November 22, 2006 at the McDuffie Regional Medical Center. He was the beloved husband of Missy Jones Brooks.
Mr. Brooks was born in Ware County, and grew up in Alma, Georgia and lived in Thomson, Georgia for the past 20 years. He was a 1989 Graduate of Thomson High School and was a Home Improvement Contractor. Mr. Brooks was owner of Live Wire Crickett Company and co-owner of Airtight Insulation Company. He was also a full-time Volunteer Coach with McDuffie County Recreation Department and was very active with Mighty Bucs Football at Briarwood Academy. The family said that Todd was a dedicated father and loved everyone.
Survivors include his wife Missy Jones Brooks of Thomson, Georgia; sons, Payton Brooks age 11 and Porter Brooks age 7; daughter- Phoebe Brooks age 3; parents: Joe L. Brooks and Bonnie Wade Brooks of Thomson; brothers, Steven Brooks and wife Michelle of Thomson, Derek Brooks of Gibson, Georgia; sister, Tonya Reed and husband Mike of Thomson.
Memorials may be made to the Todd Brooks Memorial Fund c/o Queensborough National Bank P. O. Box190 Thomson, Ga. 30824
Pallbearers were: Daryl Wiley, Matt Boswell, Kelly Guy, Mike Sowell, Glen Scouten, Jeff McGahee, Wayne Clark, Scott Corbitt, Sammy Purvis, Chris Mohr, Scott Stamper.
Funeral services were held Sunday, November 26, at Sweetwater Baptist Church with Rev. Kenneth Garvin and Tony Pate officiating. iIntermentfollowed in Westview Cemetery.

Fern Anderson Johnson

Fern Anderson Johnson, age 87, of Alma passed Monday, November 13, 2006 at the Bacon County Hospital after an extended illness.
She was a native of Randolph, Georgia but had lived in Alma for many years. Fern was the daughter of the late Joseph C. Anderson and Sara Lee Anderson. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Herschel and Cecil Anderson; three sisters, Marie Cobb, Clara Napier and Cleo Duke. Fern was a retired school teacher after thirty four years, a member of Alma First Baptist Church, AARP, Retired Teachers Association and the V.F.W. Auxiliary.
Survivors include her husband of sixty five years, Jones T. Johnson of Alma; one son, Steven Lee Johnson of Alma.
Funeral services were held Thursday, November 16, at the First Baptist Church with Rev. Mark Grimes officiating. iIntermentfollowed in Pinelawn Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were; Ben Johnson, Robert Holton, Gary Johnson, David Luke, Linton Carter and Zerrol Grantham. Honorary pallbearers were; Retired School Teachers, The Joy Sunday School Class, V.F.W. Auxiliary and members.
Crosby Funeral Home was in charge of all arrangements.

Belva Louise Perham Varnedore

Belva Louise Perham Varnedore, age 82, passed Friday, October 27, 2006 at Satilla Regional Medical Center Hospital in Waycross.
She was a native of Dekalb, Alabama and resided most of her life in Waycross. She was preceded in death by her husband Ralph Varnedore; parents, John Henry Parham and Vesta Jane Whited Parham. She was of the Pentecostal Faith and was a former seamstress with Swain Manufacturing.
Survivors include one daughter and one son-in-law, Sylvia Varnedore Thomas and Richard Thomas of Dahlonega, Georgia; two sons, Stanley Lee Varnedore of St. Mary’s Florida and Stanley (Steve) Varnedore and wife Barbara of Waycross; one sister-in-law, Essie Mae Meeks Varnedore of Nicholls; one sister, Katherine Wells of Gadsden, Alabama; four brothers, Dennis Parham and Charles Parham of Glencoe, Alabama, Johnny Parham of Gadsden, Alabama and Louie H. Parham of Chattanooga, Tennessee; six grandchildren, Sonya Suggs and husband Ryan, Ricky Thomas and wife Jennifer, Stephanie and Tammy Varnedore, and Bonnie Nix and five great-grandchildren survive.
Funeral services were held Monday, October 30, at Music Funeral Home Chapel in Waycross with Rev. T.F. Yawn and Rev. Junior Hayes officiating. iIntermentfollowed in Green Lawn cemetery in Waycross.
Active pallbearers were; Oliver Varnedore Jr., John Nix, Daniel Shawn, Denny Carter, Billy James, Arley Waters.
Music Funeral Home was in charge of all arrangements.

Dorothy Dartha Elizabeth Steedley Guess

Dorothy Dartha Elizabeth Steedley Guess, age 69, passed Thursday, November 9, at her residence in Homerville, following an extended illness.
She was born January 9, 1937 in Clinch County, to the late Jessie James Steedley and Edna Grace Fullwood Steedley. She was a retired rural letter carrier of the United States Postal Service in Homerville and a charter member of Homerville Congregational Methodist Church. She was an active supporter of her husband, the Rev. Talmadge Guess, and other churches in which he served.
Dorothy was a dedicated mother, wife, home maker, as well as professional servant in many good and thoughtful aspects in life. She was a pianist for many years until her health declined. She was preceded in death by one brother, James Earl Steedley.
Survivors include her husband of forty-nine years, Rev. Talmadge Guess of Homerville; one daughter, and son-in-law, Darlene Guess and Gary Daniel of Manor; three sons, and daughter-in-law, Tracy and Sylvia Guess of Homerville, Carthel and DeeDee Guess of Homerville, and JaRon and Ann Guess of Blackshear; seven sisters, Janice Douglas, Lola Mae Lee, Iris Smith, Robyn Jewell all of Homerville, Jaunelle Maddox of Argyle, Sara Dorman of Gainesville, Florida and Geraldine Smith of Macon; two brother, Jesse Revis Steedley and Ransom Steedley, both of Homerville; ten grandchildren, Kaitlyn Guess, Ethan Guess, Carleigh Guess, Tristan Guess, Drew Daniel, Garrett Guess, Travia Guess, Traven Guess, Tracy Talon Guess and Zorea Guess; three great-grandchildren and several other relatives survive.
Funeral services were held Sunday, November 12, at Homerville Congregational Methodist Church with Rev. Marvin Smith, Rev. W.D. Corbitt and Rev. Keith Chauncey officiating. iIntermentfollowed in Pine Forest Cemetery.
Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to the Dorothy Guess Memorial Piano Fund, c/o Homerville Congregational Methodist Church, P.O. Box 721, Homerville, Ga. 31634.

Bobby Smith

Bobby “Boss Hog” Smith, 62, of Blackshear died Monday afternoon, November 13, 2006, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida following an extended illness.
A native of Bacon County, he had lived most of his life in Pierce County. He was preceded in death by his parents Joe C. “Bus” Smith and Alma Smith. He was a retired truck driver and a former superintendent of the Pierce County Road Dept. He was of the Baptist faith and was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Survivors include a son, Bobby Smith (wife Crystal), of Blackshear; a step-son, Kevin Parrott (wife Sandy), of Blackshear; a step-daughter Cheryl Jacobs (husband Brent), of Hoboken; nine grandchildren Blue and Zoe Smith, both of Blackshear, Cassie, Hannah and Ethan Jacobs, all of Hoboken, Bridgette Jacobs, Zeb and Beth Murray, all of Blackshear, and Stephanie Morrison (husband Dustin), Hickox; three great-grandchildren; a brother Bennie Smith (wife Teresa), Kingsland; a half-brother Levy Smith, Blackshear and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at Friday, November 17, from the Martha Memorial Methodist Church. iIntermentfollowed in the church cemetery.
Smith Funeral Home of Blackshear was in charge of all arrangements.

Betty Jeanne Lee

Betty Jeanne Lee, age 82, passed Monday, November 13, 2006 at Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas, Texas. She was a native of Coffee County, but had lived in Nicholls, Alma, St. Louis and Dallas Texas. She was daughter of the late Wendell Zeb Hall and Myrtle Hall and was preceded in death by her husband Archie Oswald Lee. Betty was a member of the Baptist Faith.
Survivors include two sons, Michael V. Lee and Archie K. Lee both of Jacksonville, Florida; one daughter, Theresa Ann Hinerman and husband Steve of Dallas Texas; six grandchildren and five great- grandchildren.
Graveside services were held Friday, November 13, at Liberty Baptist Church cemetery with Rev. Lance Wade officiating.
Crosby Funeral Home was in charge of all arrangements.

Edith Vickers

Edith Vickers, age 85, of Alma passed Thursday, November 16, 2006 at the Bacon County Hospital after a short illness.
She was a native of Bacon and daughter of the late John Britt Brigman and Cassie Courson Brigman. Edith was preceded in death by a sister, Hazel Altman.
Survivors include her husband, Olan (Vick) Vickers of Alma; one daughter, Vicki Hodson and husband Greg of Atlanta; one brother, Johnnie B. Brigman of Alma; two sisters, Dorcas Walker of Waycross and Martha Aycock of Alma; two grandchildren, Jennifer Mason of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and David Hodson of Atlanta and one great-grandchild, Ashley Mason of Ft. Lauderdale.
Funeral services were held Sunday, November 19, at the First Baptist Church with Rev. Roger Taylor and Rev. Richard Johnson officiating. iIntermentfollowed in Pine Lawn Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were; David Trowell, Chuck and Foster Rowland, Andy and Mark Aycock and Al Ward. All those in attendance were considered honorary escorts.
Crosby Funeral Home was in charge of all arrangements.

Lula P. Miles

Lula P. Miles, age 84, of Alma passed Saturday, November 11, 2006 in Twin Oaks Nursing Home.
She was a native of Appling County and daughter of the late Shelly Conner and Eula Pearl Perry. Lula was preceded in death by her husband, John Lee Miles.
Survivors include two daughters, Ellen Tapley of Mershon and Elsie DeLaigle of Waynesboro; one son, Ikie Miles of Waynesboro; one brother, Willie Conners of Charleston, South Carolina; seven grandchildren and ten great- grandchildren.
A memorial was held Friday, November 17, in Burke Memorial cemetery in Waynesboro with Rev. Wayne Dixon officiating.
