James Edsel Edgerton
James Edsel Edgerton, 73, of Blackshear, passed Sunday, November 19, 2006, at his residence following an extended illness.
He was a native of Bacon County but had lived most of his life in Pierce County. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Edward Edgerton and Etna Mae Williams Edgerton, and a granddaughter, Linda Marie Chancey. He retired from the Metropolitan Police Dept. of Washington, DC and also managed Waycross Sportswear until the early 1980s. He was a faithful member of University Boulevard Church of God and the Senior Adult Sunday School Class. He was a former umpire for the local softball association and a member of the Waycross Bowling League. He was a veteran serving in the U.S. Army.
Survivors include his loving wife, Linda Edgerton, Blackshear; two daughters, Susan McDonald (husband Kenny), Middleburg, Florida and Hope Edgerton, of Dublin; two sons, Jeff Edgerton (wife Allison), of Statesboro, Stephen Edgerton (wife Joanna), Elkins Park, Pennsylvania; a step-daughter Jena Chancey (husband Dale), of Blackshear; a step-son Scott Revels, of Brunswick; seven grandchildren; his mother-in-law, Mary Anderson, of Blackshear; two sisters Merlene Dixon (husband Earl) and Christine Tarrant (husband John), all of Jacksonville, Florida; three brothers, Eugene Edgerton (wife Sybil), Jacksonville, Florida, Freddie Edgerton (wife Nancy), Middleburg, Florida and Benny Edgerton (wife Brenda), Jesup and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, November 21, from the University Boulevard Church of God. iIntermentfollowed in Oakland Cemetery.

Annie Lou Edge
Annie Lou Powell Edge, age 83, of Eastman, passed Wednesday, November 15, 2006 in Dodge County Hospital.
Ms. Edge was a native of Telfair County, a member of Cottondale Baptist Church, a retired Eastman Cotton Mill employee, and the daughter of the late George Powell and Ida Mae Miller Powell and widow of Marshall Edge.
Survivors include her sister, Mary Frances Smith of Cadwell; brother, Wilbur Powell of Alma; several nieces and nephews including Johnny Burkett and Rita Warren.
Funeral services were held Friday, November 17, in Southerland Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Daniel Cook officiating. iIntermentfollowed in Cottondale Cemetery.

MONTEZUMA — Funeral services for Mr. Morris James, Sr, 68, will be held on Thursday, August 14, 2008 at 2:00 at the New Hope Baptist Church in Montezuma with burial in Little Poplar Spring Cemetery. Mr. James died on Wednesday, August 6, 2008 after a long illness at The Federal Medical Center of Rochester, Minnesota.

ELLAVILLE — Mrs. Marie E. Snipes, age 84, of 273 Stevens St., Ellaville, died early Friday morning, Dec. 31, 2004. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 2, 2005, in the chapel of Watson-Giddens Funeral Home, with burial to follow in the Ellaville Cemetery. The Rev. Graton Helms will officiate.
Mrs. Snipes was born May 30, 1920 in Schley County, the daughter of Minnie Jane Register and Joseph Munro Ellis. She attended Andrew College in music, and used her talents to make others happy. She was a retired secretary for Rosehill United Methodist Church in Columbus and Belks in Goldsboro, N.C. Mrs. Snipes was a member of the Schley Ones, Rainbow Garden Club, Legion Auxiliary, and a member of Hopewell Methodist Church.
Survivors include one sister and brother-in-law, Hazel and Hughes Palmer of Ellaville; her nieces and nephews, Kim and Glen Lawhorn; Kay, Brent and Daniel McCarty; Traci, Rusty, Josh and Tyler Tondee; Christy, Shane, Shelley and Christopher Tondee, all of Ellaville.
Pallbearers will include Glen Lawhorn, Brent McCarty, Rusty Tondee, Shane Tondee, Daniel McCarty, Josh Tondee, Tyler Tondee and Christopher Tondee.

Frank M. Presbury Jr.
UNION CITY — Deacon Frank M. Presbury Jr., age 63, 1240 Water Shine Way, Snellville, passed on Monday, Dec. 27, 2004, at Christian City Convalescent Center in Union City.
Funeral services were conducted at 1 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 1, 2005, at Saint John Baptist Church, 224 E. Allen St., Leslie. The Rev. Jesse Watts officiated. iIntermentwill follow at 11 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 3, 2005, at Andersonville National Cemetery, cemetery Road, Andersonville.
He was born April 14, 1931 to the late Frank Marshall Presbury Sr. and Elizabeth Gordon Presbury in Forest Hills, Md. He was married
to the former Johnnie Mae Watts on Aug. 7, 1955. After 21 years of service, he retired from the U.S. Air Force as a Senior Master Sergeant. He also retired from NASA Ames Research Center as an Aircraft Inspector.
Suvivors are his wife of 49 years, Johnnie Mae Watts Presbury of Snellville; two children, Michel A. Presbury of Snellville and Chauvin W. Presbury (Nadine) of Chandler, Az.; two grandsons, Carlin Russell Williams of Washington, D.C. and Chauvin Presbury Jr. of Chandler, Az.; a sister, Mary Frances Waters and ( “Uncle”) of Forest Hills, Md.; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

AMERICUS — Mrs. Maxie Knight, age 88, passed away late Friday afternoon, Dec. 31, 2004, at Magnolia Manor Nursing Center. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today, Jan. 2, 2005, in the Blockhouse Baptist Church in Telfair County, with Dr. Lamon Moates officiating. iIntermentwill follow in the church cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Ben Knight Jr., Wesley Yawn, Chris White, Pat Taylor, Buddy Ingleright, Jonathan Knight, Phil Clemmer, Dwight Bennett, Bob Milam, John Greene and Scott Harrell.
Mrs. Knight was a native of Telfair County, born March 27, 1916, a daughter of the late George Harris Hart and Maxie Lee Hampton Hart. She was the wife of the late James Eschol Knight who preceded her in death in 1985. She was a homemaker and a member of the Blockhouse Baptist Church. She has lived in Americus since May 1985, and has attended the First Baptist Church of Americus, during that time.
The family received friends from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Hancock Funeral Home on Saturday, Jan. 1.

ALBANY — Mrs. Barbara Gail Hodges, age 44, 158 Old Stage Road, Andersonville, died Thursday night, Dec. 30, 2004, at Phobe Putney Memorial Hospital. Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 1, 2005, in the Hodges Family cemetery near Andersonville. The Rev. Wesley Lynch will officiate. Serving as active pallbearers will be Fred Statham Hodges Jr., Eric Douglas Hodges, Jack Hodges, Jonathan Phillips, Kenneth William Raybon, Jackie Rigsby, Frank McCray and David Harden.
A native of Americus, Mrs. Hodges was born Aug. 7, 1960, a daughter of Mrs. Elizabeth Rebecca Harden Raybon of Americus, who survives, and the late James Arthur Raybon. She was a bookkeeper at Fred’s Auto Repair Shop which she and her husband owned and operated.
The family received friends at the family residence, 158 Old Stage Road.
Survivors, in addition to her mother, include her husband, Fred Statham Hodges Sr.; a daughter, Tori Hodges; three sons, Fred Statham Hodges Jr., Dustin Cameron Hodges and Eric Douglas Hodges, all of Andersonville; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Annette and Fred Carlisle of Americus and Jo Underwood of Ellaville; three brothers and a sister-in-law, Johnny Raybon, Jimmy and Kristi Raybon, all of Americus, and Tommy Raybon of Plains; her father-in-law, Warren F. Hodges Sr. of Americus; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Preceding her in death were her father; a son, John Randolph Hodges III; and, a brother, Kenny Raybon.

AMERICUS — Funeral services for the late Mrs. Christine Henderson Boone of 694 Holmon Road, Leslie, who passed on Sunday, Dec. 26, 2004, at Sumter Regional Hospital, will be held at 1 p.m., Monday, Jan. 3, 2005, from the Abundant Life Holiness Church. Elder Eddie Green will officiate and burial will follow in the Piney Grove #3 Baptist Church Cemetery. The remains will lie at the church one hour prior to the services.
Mrs. Christine Henderson Boone was born in Sumter County on April 9, 1910, to the parentage of the late Mr. Tolbert Henderson and the late Mrs. Emma Harvey Henderson.
She leaves to cherish her memory one son, Mr. Jesse Boone; one daughter, Ms. Bonnie Bishop; 10 grandchildren, Eddie, Patricia, Denise, Betty, Norris, Eddie, Daisy, Donnie, Betty and Jessica; and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, great-nieces, nephews, great-nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends also survive.

AMERICUS — Mrs. Myrtice V. Cline, 97, of 2001 S. Lee St., died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2005, at Magnolia Manor Nursing Center. A native of Schley County, Mrs. Cline was born Dec. 25, 1907, daughter of the late John Short and Ophelia Herrin Short

Sarah Moorhead Thompson
AMERICUS — Mrs. Sarah Thompson, 83, of Americus, died early Monday morning, Jan. 3, 2005, at her residence after a long siege of Alzheimer’s. She is survived by her husband, Dr. Frederick Haller Thompson of Americus; one daughter, Judy Thompson of Rome and one step-daughter and son-in-law, Frederica and Neal Wellons of Hampton; one brother Robert Moorhead of Buckhead; and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Green Thumb Garden Club. She was the treasurer of National Society Daughters of the American Revolution for many years. She graduated from the University of Tennessee and received her master’s degree in bacteriology from Ohio State University. A native of Morgan County, Mrs. Thompson was born May 8, 1921, daughter of the late Benjamin Alexander Moorhead and Catherine Jones Moorhead.
A visitation will be from 5-7 p.m., today, Jan. 4, 2005, at the family residence, 414 Judy Lane, Americus. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2005, in the chapel of Greg Hancock Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Jim McIlrath officiating.

AMERICUS — Funeral services for Mr. Jesse Engram will at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2005, at New Hope Baptist Church in Montezuma with burial following in Champ Waters Cemetery. A repast will follow at Preston Williams Center.
Jesse Engram was a member of New Hope Baptist Church and was employed by Medecon. He passed away on Thursday, Dec. 30, 2004, at Sumter Regional Hospital.
He is survived by his wife, Betty W. Engram of Montezuma; daughters, Linda (Claude) Forbes and Jennifer Engram of Montezuma; sister, Edith Brown of Oglethorpe; aunt, Alice Williams of Atlanta; uncle, A.B. Brown of Montezuma; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Jack Potter and Charles and Mazarena Allen of Montezuma, Ozie Charles of Chicago, Martha (John) Keller of Englewood, N.J., and Mary (James) Washington of Cocoa, Fla.; a devoted nephew, James (Sheena) Brown of Montezuma and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

AMERICUS — Funeral services for Ms. Julia Mae Mann, affectionately called “Della, ” of Lot 29 Johnson Trailer Park, Americus, who passed on Monday, Nov. 1, 2004 at Sumter Regional Hospital, will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2004 from the Union Grove Baptist Church. The Rev. Carl Munns Jr. will officiate and burial will follow in the Old Corinth Cemetery. The remains will lie at the church one hour prior to the services.
Ms. Julia Mann was born in Sumter County on Aug. 25, 1949 to the parentage of the late Mr. Oscar Mann and the late Mrs. Eva Mae Jackson Mann.
She leaves to mourn her passing and loving companion, Mr. Johnny Lee Angry; a devoted god-daughter, Ms. Niyearra Cobb; four sisters, Ms. Bertha Williams, Ms. Ruthie (Matthew) Lewis, Ms. Louise (Alexander) Boddie and Ms. Mattie (Leroy) Williams; two brothers, Mr. Charlie Waters and Mr. Robert F. Rhydon G. Mays Sr.
AMERICUS — Mr. Rhydon G. Mays Sr., age 63, died shortly after noon on Monday, Jan. 3, 2005, at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 6., in the chapel of Hancock Funeral Home with the Rev. Lance Fendley officiating. Following the service, Mr. Mays will be cremated.
Born Feb. 6, 1941, in Jacksonville, Fla. Mr. Mays was the son of the late Samuel Warren Mays Sr. and Martha Parker Mays. He was a member of Morningside United Methodist Church and a veteran of the U.S. Army. For a number of years, he owned and operated Mays Supply Company, specializing in janitorial and swimming pool supplies.
Survivors include his wife, Tina Mays; four daughters and two sons-in-law, Renee Waldron of Americus, Cynthia and Doug Dixon of Sierra Vista, Az., Katherine and Tim Calnin and Nancy Mays all of Green Bay; two sons and daughters-in-law, Rhydon Jr. and Amy Mays of Sautee and David and Crystal Mays of Smithville; a sister and brother-in-law, Martha and Joe May of Thomasville; a brother and sister-in-law, Warren and Elaine Mays of Thomasville; 15 grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Ruth Joan Miller
LESLIE — Mrs. Ruth Joan Miller, 71, of Leslie, went to be with the Lord on Jan. 11, 2005. A celebration of her life will held Thursday at Hancock Funeral Home on South Lee Street and again Saturday afternoon in Girard, Ill., where she will be laid to rest. The family will receive friends from 4-6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 13 at Hancock Funeral Home, after which the celebration of her life will be held. The Rev. Lance Fendley will officiate at the services in Georgia and Illinois.
Born May 17, 1933, in Hastings, Neb., Mrs. Miller was a daughter of the late Ralph R. Henry and May Marie Henry. She was a pre-k paraprofessional at Cherokee Elementary School and had taught Sunday School most of her life. She attended Bethel Baptist Church for many years, and at the time of her death, was a member of Smithville Baptist Church. She was a very gifted artist and was well known for her knitting skills.
Mrs. Miller is survived by her husband of 49 years, Jake Miller, and her four children, Jay, Rhonda, Robin and Jeff; eight grandchildren, Amber, Tara, Jacob, Jorgia, Karsyn, Connor, Emily Grace and Jayson; brothers, Walter Henry, Jack Henry and Gene Henry; and a sister, Donna Krewson.

HAMPTON — Funeral services for Mr. Ivory Snead Jr. of Togwatee Pass, Hampton, formerly of 614 E. Jefferson St., Americus, who passed on Sunday, Jan. 9, 2005, in the Fayette Community Hospital, will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 13, 2005, at Campbell Chapel A.M.E. Church. The Rev. Frederick Sherrod will officiate and burial will follow iin Eastview Cemetery. A viewing will be held one hour prior to the services at the church. Mr. Ivory Snead Jr. was born on June 23, 1917, in Sumter County to the parentage of the late Mr. Ivory Snead and the late Hattie Bishop Snead.
He leaves to cherish his memory, a loving and devoted daughter, Ms. Lavonia Snead Henderson of Hampton; two granddaughters, Ms. Ti’Erra Snead-(Lonie) Floyd and Ms. Ka’Ron (Tywong) Lightle; one grandson, Mr. Dallas Edmonds; six great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

CORDELE — Mr. Folds Emory Wright, 84, of 1104 N. 4th St., Cordele died on Monday evening, Jan. 10, 2005, at Crisp Regional Hospital. A visitation will be held from 6 until 8 p.m. today, Jan. 12 at Hancock Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 13, from the graveside at Oak Grove Cemetery. The Rev. Tony Morris will officiate.
Mr. Wright, a cloth mill worker, was born Aug. 21, 1920, in Arabi, a son of the late John Wright and Stella Folds Wright.
Survivors include his son, Allon Wright of Cordele; his sister, Jonnie Mae Wade of Cordele; grandchildren, Renee Becton and her husband Doug, Gail Wall and her husband Hank, and Craig Dickerson and his wife Katie, all of Americus; great-grandchildren, Jordan Parker, Joshua Becton and Hannah Becton, all of Americus, Ashley Bosnar and her husband Anthony of Oneonta, Ala., Stephanie Wooden and her husband Chris, Brittany Hearon, J.C. Dickerson and Elizabeth Dickerson, all of Americus; and great-great-grandchildren, Catherine, Weston and Melanie Wooden, all of Americus. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
