William Benjamin Worthy
LILBURN -- Mr. William Benjamin "Ben" Worthy, 81, formerly of Americus, died early Monday morning, March 1, 2004, at Lilburn Health Care in Lilburn. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. March 3 at the graveside at Oak Grove cemetery with the Rev. Tommy McConnell officiating.
Mr. Worthy was born July 4, 1922, the son of the late William Benjamin Worthy Jr. and Elizabeth Allen Worthy. Mr. Worthy was a retired accountant and musician. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy, and obtained the rank of lieutenant. He was of the Protestant faith.
Mr. Worthy is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Lee Allen and Lillian Worthy of Cedartown; two nieces, Ann Williams and her husband Judson of Lilburn and Carol Lanier of Warner Robins; a nephew, Henry Worthy of St. Simons; and a number of great-nieces and great-nephews.

Gladys A. Beech
CUMMING -- Mrs. Gladys A. Beech, 83, of Cumming died Feb. 28, 2004. A native of Americus, Mrs. Beech lived with her foster parents, Dr. and Mrs. Primrose. She lived in Cumming for the past seven years, moving there from East Point.
A graduate of Georgia Southwestern College, she was a homemaker and a Presbyterian. While she and Mr. Beech resided in Albany, she was an officer of the Dawson Road Garden Club, the Albany Women's club and the Elks Aidmore Auxiliary.
Surviving are her daughters and sons-in-law, Juanita and the Rev. Euel Gilstrap of Gainesville and Loretta and George Marks of Cumming; grandchildren, Shaun Martin and Clay Martin, both of Atlanta, Randy Hunter of Clermont, Jeffrey Hunter of Atlanta, Michelle Pritchett and Kimberly Diaz, both of Gainesville, Sandra Mendoza of Jefferson, Michael Murphy of Cleveland; and 20 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 4, at McDonald and Son Funeral Home with the Rev. John Tarrant and the Rev. Euel Gilstrap officiating. iIntermentwill follow at Sawnee View Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Wednesday at McDonald and Son Funeral Home and Crematory.

Mary Carson
PLAINS -- Ms. Mary Carson was born Oct. 26, 1926, in Webster County to the parentage of Claude Muff Sr. and Hilda Adams Muff. She joined the Magnolia Baptist Church at an early age and served faithfully until her health failed. She was educated in the Webster County School District (Weston) .
She was a provider of care for her family children, as well as neighborhood youngsters. She was married
to the late Mr. John Henry Carson. One son preceded her in death, Mr. Robert Carson. Two siblings also preceded her in death, a sister, Ms. Julia Mae Muff and a brother, Mr. Claude Muff Jr.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. today, March 2, at Magnolia Baptist Church in Preston. The Rev. Jimmy Crimes Jr. will officiate. iIntermentwill follow in the Preston Cemetery.
Ms. Carson died Wednesday, Feb. 25, at the Lillian Carter Nursing Center. She leaves to cherish her memory, three sons, Mr. Larry Carson and Mr. Harry Carson (Marion) of Plains and Mr. Amos Carson (Sue) of Americus; one sister, Ms. Hattie Majors (Charlie James) of Albany; one brother, Mr. Clarence Muff (Loretta) of Jacksonville, Fla.; one sister-in-law, Ms. Ozzie B. McGee of Decatur; a daughter-in-law, Ms. Daisy Hurley of Plains; grandchildren, Christopher, Teresa, Jeffery, Michael and Roderick; a devoted cousin, Ms. Minnie Lee Sims of Americus; a devoted family friend, Mr. Robert Schley of Plains and several nephews, nieces, cousins and devoted friends

NEWARK, N.J. -- Funeral services for Mr. Alvin Lee Colwell of Newark, N.J., formerly of Americus who passed on Tuesday, March 9, 2004, at the University Hospital in Newark, will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 15, 2004, in the chapel of Barnum Funeral Home. The Rev. Leon Pace will officiate and burial will follow in Staley Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Alvin Lee Colwell was born on June 9, 1930, in Sumter County to the parentage of the late Mr. Sidney Colwell and the late Mrs. Annie Rose Kitchens Colwell.
He leaves to mourn his passing, four sons, Mr. Abdul Khaaliq (Ambera) Ali, Mr. Shelton S. Colwell, Mr. Dwight H. AMERICUS -- Funeral services for Mr. Charlie Durham, affectionately called "Hoogy, " of 601 S. Hampton St., Americus, who passed at his home on Wednesday, March 10, 2004, will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 16, 2004, at the Bethlehem Baptist Church. The Rev. George F. Monts Jr. will officiate and burial will follow in the church cemetery. A viewing will be held one hour prior to the services at the church.
Mr. Charlie Durham was born on Nov. 21, 1954, in Sumter County to the parentage of the late Mr. Charlie Bell and the late Mrs. Jeppa Durham Smith. At an early age, he joined the Bethlehem Baptist Church. Hoogy, a man of many talents, enjoyed working with the computer and loved meeting people. He was an avid Bible scholar and studied with many religious organizations, and he was a genuis in mathematics.
He leaves to cherish his memory, one son, Mr. Edward Charles Bowens; two daughters, Ms. Shaqueta Bowens and Ms. Tiffany (Edward) Lenore; two brothers, Mr. James (Catherine) Durham and Mr. Allen O'Neal (Irene) Smith; four sisters, Ms. Debby (Raymond) Stewart, Ms. Mary S. Williams, Ms. Linda Smith and Ms. Juanita S. Barber; one grandchild, Nylla Lenore; a devoted companion, Ms. Barbara Stewart; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

AMERICUS -- Funeral services for Ms. Brenda Teresa Westbrook of 426 S. Lee St., Americus, who passed Tuesday, March 9, 2004, will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, March 15, 2004, at the Household of Faith Church. Pastor Marcia Carter will officiate and burial will follow in Eastview Cemetery.
Ms. Brenda Teresa Westbrook was born on July 10, 1977, in Sumter County to the parentage of Ms. Ossie L. Westbrook and friend, Walter Jones and Mr. Willie J. Ford.

Ernest Burton Thacker
AMERICUS -- Mr. Ernest Burton Thacker, 81, of 110 Shaaban Subdivision Road, Plains, died Thursday evening, March 11, 2004, at Sumter Regional Hospital in Americus. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 13, 2004, from the graveside at Rehoboth Baptist Church cemetery in Americus with the Rev. Greg Kirk officiating.
Mr. Thacker was a native of Davidson County, Tenn., and was born on Aug. 1, 1922, the son of the late Ernest Burton Thacker Sr. and Maggie Colquette Thacker. Mr. Thacker was a veteran of World War II where he served in the U.S. Air Force. He was a retired school teacher. He taught for 30 years in Davidson County, Tenn. He was a member of the Rehoboth Baptist Church in Americus.
Mr. Thacker is survived by his wife, Patricia Boyce Thacker of Plains; a daughter, Beverly June Thacker; two sons, Ernest Burton Thacker Jr. and Joel Boyce Thacker of Nashville, Tenn.; four sisters, Dean Eddy, Jean McCain, Frances Lee and Dorothy Buchanan, all of Nashville, Tenn.; one brother, Albert Lee Thacker; also surviving is a number of nieces and nephews.

Mary Alma Alston
DAWSON -- Mary Alma Massey Alston, 98, formerly of Parrott died on Thursday, Feb. 26, 2004, at Palmyra Medical Centers in Albany. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the graveside in Cedar Hill cemetery in Dawson.
Mrs. Alston was a native of Stewart County, born Jan. 17, 1906, daughter of the late Charlie Monroe Massey and Leona Tomlin Massey. She lived most of her life in Terrell County, was a homemaker and a member of the Macedonia Baptist Church. Her husband was the late Frank Fletcher Alston Sr. of Parrott.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, James Louis Alston of Parrott and a great-grandson, Charles Alston Laviner.
Survivors include two sons, Frank Alston Jr. and wife Becky, and Charlie Alston and wife Merle, all of Parrott; a daughter, Mary Frank Laviner and husband David of Dawson; a daughter-in-law, Mary Sue Alston of Parrott; a sister-in-law, Theresa Massey of Winter Garden, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Ronald Alston and Dennis Alston, both of Albany, Steve Alston of Parrott, Beth Alston of Americus, Gayle Alston of Jacksonville, Fla., Jayne Taylor and husband Billy of Fernandina Beach, Fla., and Bruce Laviner and wife Debbie of Troy, Ala.; eight great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Annie Mae Vaughn
PLAINS -- Mrs. Annie Mae Vaughn, 88, died Thursday morning, Feb. 26, 2004, at the Sumter County Retirement Village in Plains. Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 28, in Lebanon cemetery with the Rev. Don Wilson officiating. Members of the PALs Club are requested to serve as honorary pallbearers.
Mrs. Vaughn was born March 16, 1915, a daughter of the late Edward Harman Watson and Carrie Callahan Watson. She was the wife of the late Charles J. Vaughn, who preceded her in death on Aug. 9, 1983. She was retired from Manhattan Shirt Co. She was a member of the Plains Baptist Church, and the PALs Club, and was a former member of the Stitch and Chat Club.
The family will receive friends at the Sumter County Retirement Village in Plains.
Survivors include a sister, Ruby Watsonn of Plains, and several nieces and nephews.

ALBANY -- Mrs. Sarah Lee Mays-Daniel, 77, of 724 Carter Place Road, Leesburg died Feb. 25, 2004, at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, Albany. Funeral services are 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 28, at Phillip Grove Baptist Church, Ga. Highway 195, Leesburg. iIntermentwill be at Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery, DeSoto. Mrs. Mays-Daniel was born May 10, 1926, in Lee County and she attended Lee County Public Schools. She was a homemaker and a member of Phillip Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Mr. William Daniel Sr. of Leesburg; five daughters, Johnnie Mae Williams and Margret Jenkins (Milton), both of Leesburg, Leona Daniel of Macon, Sarah Kennedy (Derrick) of Yokosuka, Japan, and Jennie Daniel of Americus; seven sons, William Daniel Jr. (Sandra), Jesse Daniel and Wallace Daniel (Stella), all of Leesburg, Willie James Daniel (Lois), Calvin Daniel (Marilyn) and Eddie Daniel (Patricia), all of Albany, Wilbert Daniel of Atlanta; two sisters, Lois Bryant of Leslie and Mary Porter of Detroit; three brothers, Robert Mays (Norma) and Arthur Mays (Ella Ruth), both of Leslie, James Mays of Leesburg; 26 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Jimmy Wayne Toms Sr.
ELLAVILLE -- Mr. Jimmy Wayne Toms Sr., age 40, of 2107 Highway 280 West, Cordele, died early Saturday morning, April 17, 2004. A memorial service will be held 4 p.m. Monday, April 19, at Watson-Giddens Funeral Chapel with the Reverend Mark Kinservik officiating.
Mr. Toms was born Jan. 15, 1964 in Sumter County, the son of Annie Mae and David Toms of Americus. He was a mechanic and forklift operator.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, include his wife, Darnella Lawrence Toms; one daughter, Tonya Toms of Leslie; two sons, Jimmy Wayne Toms Jr. and Steve Toms, both of Americus; one step-daughter, Jennifer Holland of Cordele; one step-son, Michael Lawrence of Americus; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Junior and Cathy Toms of Americus, Johnny and Bobbie Jo Toms of Leesburg; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Connie and Daniel Bracewell of Leesburg and Lori and Mark Grant of Americus; one grandson, Tyler Daniel Toms; and his grandmother, Eva Mae Toms of Ellaville. Several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews also survive.

Jim Batts
COBB -- Mr. Jim R. Batts, 64, died Thursday, April 15, 2004, at his residence in Cobb.
Born Jan. 20, 1940, in Colquitt County, he was the son of the late Percy Lee Batts and Emma Weeks Batts. Mr. Batts had worked at Davidson Rubber in Americus and more recently at Wayne Dalton in Pensacola, Fla. He retired in Dec. 2003.
A visitation will be held beginning at 6 p.m. today, Sunday, April 18 at J. Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home in Claxton. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, April 19, at Harmony United Methodist Church with Dr. Carlton Allen officiating, and the burial will be held at Harmony United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Survivors are: his wife, Dolly Batts of Cobb; two sons and daughters-in-law, Johnny A. and Margie S. Dawon Sr. of Cochran and Ricky R. and Alicia Batts of Senoia; two daughters and sons-in-law, Gena J. and Mark Householder of Newnan and Michelle and Mark C. Kelly of Gainesville; sister, June Gudger of Mableton; five grandsons; three granddaughters and other relatives. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Brittany Batts.
