AMERICUS -- Mr. Raphord M. Allegood, age 88, of Americus died Saturday, March 27, 2004 at Magnolia Manor Nursing Center. Mr. Allegood was a native of Colquitt County, born the son of the late James R. and Edie H. Allegood. He was a member of Rehoboth Baptist Church, a veteran of the U.S. Air Force serving during World War II, an avid gardener and owner of Ryan Street Grocery in Montgomery, Ala. for 42 years, before moving to Americus.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. at Rehoboth Baptist Church on Monday, March 29, with the Rev. Nelson Weathersby, the Rev. Tommy McConnel and the Rev. Greg Kirk officiating. iIntermentwill follow in the church cemetery.
Mr. Allegood is survived by his wife, Ruby G. Allegood of Americus; five sisters and two brothers-in-law, Lucille Hagler of Snellville, Ethelene and Dewey Roark of St. Augustine, Fla., Pearlie Mae Vickers of Lakeland, Fla., Virginia Seay of Moultrie and Winiford and Emory Laird of Pineville, La.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one sister, Mary D. Kickerson.
Those serving as pallbearers will be Donnie Stanfill, Floyd Crosby, Allan Lee, Steve Carswell, Gentry Tillman, Jared George, Christopher Carswell and Jimmy Dickerson. Requested to serve as honorary pallbearers will be Billy Harper, Jimmy Bass, Paul Bush, Fox Stephens, Paul Shellnut and Jim Bowen.
The family will receive friends from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. today, Sunday, March 28 at Greg Hancock Funeral Chapel.

Thelma Evans Jordan
BYROMVILLE -- Funeral services for Thelma Evans Jordan of 709 Carver St., Americus, who passed on Wednesday, March 24, 2004 in the Pine Hill Nursing Center in Byromville, will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 30, from Bethlehem Baptist Church. Elder Arthur Fulton will officiate and burial will follow in the church cemetery. There will be a viewing at the church one hour prior to the services.
Mrs. Thelma Evans Jordan was born in Terrell County to the parentage of the late Mr. Elijah Evans and the late Mrs. Emma Cato Evans.
She leaves to mourn her passing, her husband of 60 years, Mr. James Jordan; eight beloved children, Mr. Johnny Lee (Eileen) Jordan, Mr. Jimmy (Linda) Jordan Jr., Mr. Willie Jordan, Mr. Calvin Jordan, Ms. Thelma Jean (Willie) Laster, Ms. Emma Jean Ray, Ms. Jimmie Lee (Henry Lee) Richardson and Mr. Robert King; one sister, Ms. Catherine (Robert) Russell; two brothers, Mr. Clarence Evans and Mr. Henry Hardy; 34 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, 12 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and special friends also survive.

Martha W. Fowler
COLUMBUS -- Martha W. Fowler, 78, of Columbus died Friday, March 26, 2004 at St. Francis Hospital.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m., Tuesday, March 30 at Main Post Cemetery, Ft. Benning. The family will receive friends today, Sunday, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and Monday evening from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mrs. Fowler was born April 11, 1925 in Montezuma, the daughter of the late John Dexter Brown and Sarah Taylor Brown. She had lived in Columbus for the past 32 years and was a Baptist. She was preceded in death by her husband, Tolbert Fowler, and a son, Fred Fowler.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Dexter and Pam Fowler of Columbus; a sister, Elizabeth Timberlake of Rome; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Margaret Partee Lee
AMERICUS -- Mrs. Margaret Partee Lee, age 94, died Friday, March 26, 2004 at Sumter Regional Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 29, at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jim McIlrath and the Rev. Bill Dupree officiating. iIntermentwill follow in the Oak Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the residence of Bill and Ann Harris, 1801 Rose Ave., Americus.

Born July 4, 1909 in Piedmont, Ala., Mrs. Lee was the daughter of Laura Ann Callan and Thomas Irvin Partee. She grew up in Cedartown, graduated from Cedartown High School and received her A.B. degree in English from LaGrange College, LaGrange. Shortly after graduation, she accepted a teaching position in Leslie and moved to Sumter County. There she met and married
Paul Jennings Lee, who preceded her in death in 1974.
She had an outstanding 25-year career in the Americus Public School System, spending most of this time teaching sixth grade at Reese Park School. Mrs. Lee was an active member of the First United Methodist Church where she served as chairman of the Committee on Missions for several years, taught Sunday School and served as a member of the Board of Trustees. She was past president and district officer of the United Methodist Women (UMW), a UMW study leader for many years, and a member of the Upper Room Sunday School Class.
Mrs. Lee was a member of the Georgia and National Retired Teachers Association, honorary member of the Junior Service League, past president of the Azalea Garden Club and a former member of DAR.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Ann Lee Harris and Bill Harris of Americus; three grandchildren, Bill Harris Jr. of Americus, Lee Harris of Americus, and David Harris and his wife Mallory of Columbus; one niece, Beth Hunt and her husband Van of Cedartown; five nephews, Fred Parker and his wife Weesie of Cedartown, Richard Lee of Tallahassee, Fla., Pete and Jane Carter of McDonough, Billy and Phyllis Carter of Atlanta and Winston and Ann Lee of Greenville, S.C. A number of great-nieces and nephews also survive.

Clifford Wade Barber
PHILADELPHIA -- Mr. Clifford Wade Barber, formerly of Americus, who resided in Philadelphia, Penn. for 56 years or more, died on Friday, March 19, 2004. He was the son of the late Ms. Julia Barber of Americus, who later resided with him in Philadelphia, Penn.
He was a member of the United States Army during World War II and was a member of the Trench Rats. After the military, he moved to Philadelphia, Penn. and married
Ms. Nona Gertrude Murray, formerly of Plains. He was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church, Masonic Lodge, American Legion and the Disabled Veterans. He worked for numerous years at Gimbel's Department Store where he retired from in 1985.
He leaves to mourn, his loving wife of 56 years Mrs. Nona Gertrude, and a devoted mother-in-law who resided with him Mrs. Iona Murray; three cousins, Clifford E. Barber of Milledgeville, Mr. Robert B. Barber of Atlanta and Mrs. Janet Barber Hicks of Columbus; foster children, Mr. Jerome Peartree of Halifax, Va., Miss Rayshon Peartree and Mrs. Edna Bonner (Michael); Mr. Demetrius Peartree and Mr. Gregory Moore, all of Philadelphia, Penn. Other foster children and a host of friends also survive.

William Michael Lucas
AMERICUS -- Mr. William Michael "Bill" Lucas, 86, died Monday evening, March 29, 2004, at his residence at 130 Murphy Mill Road, Americus. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 2, 2004, in the chapel of Aldridge Funeral Services with the Rev. Doug James officiating, with burial to follow at Oak Grove Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, April 1, 2004, at Aldridge Funeral Services. Mr. Lucas, a native of Jefferson County, Fla., was born on Dec. 12, 1917, the son of the late Solomon David Lucas and Bessie Ann Ward Lucas. Mr. Lucas was the owner/operator of Bill Lucas Construction Co. for many years in Americus. He was a member of Elizabeth Baptist Church in Jefferson County, Fla., and attended Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Americus. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific.
Survivors include one sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Kelly Bailey of Jasper, Fla.; two sisters-in-law, Lois Haithcox and husband Charles of New Hill, N.C., and Carol Haithcox and husband Grady of Charleston, S.C.; and one brother and sister-in-law, David and Beaula Lucas of Jasper, Fla. A number of nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Ann S. Wise
PLAINS -- Mrs. Ann S. Wise, 76, died Tuesday morning, March 30, 2004, at her residence in Plains. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 1, 2004, at the Plains Baptist Church with the Rev. Don Wilson officiating. Patrick Cobb and Bubba Cobb will provide a vocal duet, and interment will follow in Lebanon Cemetery. Nephews, including Darrell Hobgodd, Chris Slocumb, Paul Woodall, Dean Slocumb, Dale Slocumb, Stacy Davis and Glynn Cobb, will serve as active pallbearers.
Mrs. Wise, a native of Webster County, was born April 14, 1927, a daughter of the late Ruric Nevel Slocumb and Anice Cole Slocumb. She was a leader in every part of her life, from the time she was the class valedictorian of her high school graduating class until her ministry to others in the positive outlook she showed while battling cancer. She was a homemaker and a very active member of the Plains Baptist Church as long as her health permitted. She formerly served as a circle leader in the Women's Missionary Union, a Sunday School teacher and a worker in Vacation Bible School. One of her missions in life was to give help wherever help was needed. This was made evident in her volunteer work with the American Red Cross blood drives, as a caregiver for family and friends, in her assistance with the Wednesday Bible Study at the Lillian Carter Nursing Center, and in numerous other community activities. She showed her love for people in many ways, including having a nephew, Harvey Slocumb, live as a son with her family for a number of years.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. today, March 31, at Hancock Funeral Home. At other times, friends may call at the family residence, 105 Ga. Highway 45 North, Plains.

Margaret Unice Raybon Robbins
ALBANY -- Mrs. Margaret Unice Raybon Robbins, age 79, died early Wednesday morning, March 31, 2004 at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
Mrs. Robbins was a native and lifetime resident of Americus. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith. Mrs. Robbins was born the daughter of the late Eugene Raybon and Mary Johnson Raybon on July 30, 1924.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Mariann Tyler and Waymon of Buena Vista; a sister, Grace Smith of Macon; one granddaughter, Lisa Tyler Barrow and her husband Johnny of Butler. Also surviving are two great-grandchildren, Harley Ann and Hunter Tyler Barrow of Butler.
Mrs. Robbins was preceded in death by her husband Morris Robbins.

Nonie Dowdy Cheek
AMERICUS -- Mrs. Nonie Dowdy Cheek, age 84, of 2001 S. Lee St., died early Saturday morning, March 20, 2004, at Sumter Regional Hospital. A native of Floyd County, Mrs. Cheek was born Nov. 14, 1919, daughter of the late Robert M. Dowdy and Willie Ables Dowdy. She was a homemaker and a member of Leslie United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Hortense Tinsley Sunday School Class, Nonie Cheek Circle and a counselor for youth for 10 years. She was also a member of the Leslie/DeSoto Hobby Club.
Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. on today, Sunday, March 21, at Greg Hancock Funeral Chapel. At other times friends may call at the residence of Douglas and Laura Cheek, 524 Wildwood Circle. Memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church, Allen Street, Leslie, Ga. 31764.

Etta Jean Hall Cromer
MONTEZUMA -- Mrs. Etta Jean Cromer, age 66, of 374 Old VFW Road, Oglethorpe, died Thursday, March 18, 2004, at Flint River Community Hospital in Montezuma. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 21, in Sunset Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Johnny Cromer officiating.
A native of Sumter County, Mrs. Cromer was born Oct. 3, 1937, a daughter of the late H. Dennis Hall and Nettie Lou Davis Pope. She was a graduate of Americus High School and a member of Rehoboth Baptist Church.
Visitation was held from 6-8 p.m. on Saturday, March 20, at Greg Hancock Funeral Chapel. At other times friends may call at the residence of Myra and Billy Pennington, 747 Ga. Highway 49 South.
Survivors include: her husband, Calvin Cromer of Oglethorpe; three daughters, Vicki Noack of Marble Hill, Myra Kennington of Oglethorpe and Lisa McKinney of Lizella; one step-daughter, Dianne Pugh of Americus; one son, Lennie Crook of Kennesaw; one sister, Myra Pennington of Americus; one half-brother, Jerry Pope of DeSoto; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
