Madison E. Dill
AMERICUS -- Mr. Madison E. Dill, 92, died Saturday afternoon, Sept. 20, 2003, at Magnolia Manor Nursing Center. Funeral services will be at noon Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2003, at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Father Clif Marquis officiating. iIntermentwill follow at 2 p.m. in the cemetery at Andersonville National Historic Site. Grandsons, including Chris Dill, Jeff Dill, Robby Hernandez, Michael Hernandez, Ricky Hernandez, Ty Turner, Tim Frost and Todd Short will serve as active pallbearers.
The family will receive friends at Hancock Funeral Home from 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 22, followed by a short service of remembrance in the funeral home chapel. Father Clif Marquis will officiate.
Mr. Dill, a native of Townley, Ala., was born April 16, 1911, a son of the late Madison Lee Dill and Ethel Sides Dill. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and was the retired owner and operator of Dill's Florist.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Helen M. Dill of Americus, five daughters and four sons-in-law, Mary and Fred Hernandez, Kitty and Jack Turner and Joey McLean Thompson, all of Americus; Carol and A.C. Short of Alachua, Fla., and Angela and Norm Moye of Dahlonega; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Henry and Barbara Dill of Detroit, Mich., Hank McLean of Lilburn and Jerry and Trayce Dill of Americus; 20 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; another daughter-in-law, Marijane Dill of Americus; two sisters, Mrs. Geneva Wheeler of Birmingham, Ala., and Mrs. Barbara Myers of Huntsville, Ala.; and a number of nieces and nephews. Two sons, Jim Dill and Gene Dill, and two brothers, Julius Dill and Olin Dill, preceded him in death.

ELGIN, S.C. -- Mrs. Dorothy Countryman Aycock, 79, of Elgin, S.C., died Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2003. Mrs. Aycock was born Nov. 2, 1923, the daughter of the late Howard Blackshear and the late Marie James Countryman in Sumter County.
Survivors include her husband Herbert C. Aycock and two sons, Raymond and Michael Aycock all of South Carolina and a number of nieces and nephews. She was precede in death by three sisters and two brothers.

Emma Lou Burney
SMITHVILLE -- Funeral Services for Mrs. Emma Lou Burney of Smithville, will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 20, 2003, at Green Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Timothy French officiating. Burial will follow at New Hope A.M.E. Cemetery.
Mrs. Emma Lou Tyson Burney was born on May 10, 1924, in Sumter County to the parentage of the late Robert Tyson and Lelia Jackson Tyson.
She received her education in the Sumter County School System. Mrs. Tyson was a loving member of her community and a dedicated member of the Green Grove Baptist Church. On Feb. 25, 1945, she was joined in holy matrimony to the late Robert Burney Sr. and to this union were born four children; two preceded her in death. Mrs. Burney died on Saturday, Sept. 13, at her home.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her children, Lelia Mae Burney of Smithville, Robert Burney Jr. (Fracine) of Rochester, N.Y.; those she raised as her own, Willie Frank Bell of California, Walker Fred Dean of New Jersey, Gracie Ruth Yelverton of Pennsylvania, Connie Harlem Burney of New York, Daniel Smith of Smithville, J.C. Burney of Albany and Corey Burney of Detroit; grandchildren, Allen Smoak, Arthur Lee Hall, Torrence (Yvonne) Burney, Vinice Nicole Burney, Tamika (Corey) Carter, Tiffany Burney, Moneita Sheree Burney, Robin Burney and several great-grandchildren and other relatives.

Meta Elizabeth Kobs Beaver
Mrs. Beth Beaver, 47, of 158 Parkers Mill Creek Road, Americus died Thursday, Sept. 18, 2003, at her residence. Graveside funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, at Oak Grove cemetery with the Rev. Damon Fountain and Dr. Reed Crumbliss officiating.
A lifetime native of Sumter County, Mrs. Beaver was born Feb. 21, 1956, a daughter of the late Adolf F. Kobs and Dora S. Kobs, who survives her. She was an employee of Sumter Bank & Trust Company in the bookkeeping department and was a member of the First United Methodist Church.
Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. toda, y Sept. 19, at Greg Hancock Funeral Chapel, 142 Southland Road and at other times at the family residence.

MIAMI, Fla. -- Funeral services for Mr. Allie Trent, affectionately called "Billy, " of 19500 N.W. 37th Court, Miami, Fla., formerly of Smithville, who passed on Friday, Sept. 12, 2003, in the Parkway Regional Medical Center, Miami, Fla., will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, 2003, at the New Hope A.M.E. Church, Smithville. The Rev. Alfreda Williams will officiate and burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Mr. Allie Trent was born April 26, 1926, in Smithville. He was the seventh child of 10 children born of the late Mr. Alexander Trent and the late Mrs. Ella Mae Dixon Trent.

AMERICUS - Funeral services for Ms. Valteshia Devette Barthell of 129 Lane Subdivision Middle River Road in Americus, who died on Friday, August 1, 2003, will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, August 7, 2003, from the Friendship Baptist Church. The Rev. Melvin McCluster will officiate and burial will follow in the Staley Memorial Gardens.
Ms. Valteshia Devette Barthell was born on December 13, 1984 to Ms. Deborah Barthell. Val lived all over the United States, attending school in Hawaii, Virginia, Texas and Georgia. Over the years, she participated in numerous sports: softball, track, soccer, basketball and even girls football in Virginia. She was also active with band, FBLA, FHA, JROTC, Drama Team and SCCHS Gospel Choir. She was listed in Who's Who Among High School Students, a member of the National Honor Society and was honored by the Americus/ Sumter County Chamber of Commerce for excellence in Technical Education for the twelfth grade for 2003. This spring, she completed an internship with the Sumter County District Attorney's office. Val graduated from the Sumter County Comprehensive High School in the Class of 2003. She received the Hope Scholarship and was planning to attend Savannah State University this fall, majoring in Pre-Law. She was a very active member at the Friendship Baptist Church. She is preceded in death by her grandfather, Mr. Lucious Barthell, Jr.
Survivors include her devoted mother, Chief Warrant Officer 2 Deborah Barthell; her "father-figure" Mr. Thaddeus; her grandmother, Ms. Bertha Mae Clark-Barthell; four uncles, Mr. Samuel (Annie) Barthell, Mr. Albert Barthell, Mr. Lucious Barthell III and Mr. Calvin Barthell; two great uncles, Mr. Grant Barthell and Mr. Sam Barthell; seven aunts, Ms. Mary Barthell, Ms. Willie Ruth Barthell, Ms. Betty Ingram, Ms. Mae Barthell, Ms. Edna (Oscar) Rogers, Ms. Jacquelin (Michael) Malone and Ms. Tracy (Howard) Watt; three great aunts, Ms. Carrie Clark, Ms. Catherine Clark and Ms. Quida Breedlove; three "sibling-like" cousins, Maurice Barthell, Calvin Arnold and Cheri English; two "big sisters" cousins, Ms. Phyllis Williams and Ms. Sebrina Ingram; and a host of other relatives and friends also survive.

Joseph Thomas Daniels
MOBILE, Ala. -- Mr. Joseph Thomas Daniels died Aug. 4, 2003, in Mobile, Ala. He was born March 13, 1940 in Webster County. He attended and graduated from schools in Americus and retired as senior chief yeoman from the U.S. Coast Guard after serving 22 years. He later retired from the Alabama State Patrol.
He was preceded in death by his father, Hoke Smith Daniels, and mother Mary Rose Daniels. He is survived by his wife, Dianne Gubbins Daniels; three children, Susan, Judith and Tommy; sister and brother-in-law Joyce and Jack McCrary of Americus; brothers and sisters-in-law Billy and Tammy Daniels of Savannah and Walter and Connie Daniels of Elizabeth City, N.C.; numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Graveside services and interment were at noon Thursday, Aug. 7, 2003, in Pine Crest cemetery in Mobile, Ala. Arrangements were made by Pine Crest Funeral Home, 1939 Dauphin Island Parkway, Mobile, AL 36605.
James Hawkins Gatewood
MONTEZUMA -- James Hawkins "Chick" Gatewood, 80, of Montezuma, died Thursday, Aug. 7, 2003. Funeral services were held Saturday, Aug. 9, 2003, at graveside at Oak Grove cemetery in Americus.
Mr. Gatewood was born March 9, 1923, in Americus, son of the late Timothy Furlow Gatewood Jr. and Flora Denham Gatewood. He was a graduate of Americus High School and the University of Georgia, where he was a member of the Chi Phi Fraternity. He played on the football and baseball teams at the UGA, was the captain of the baseball team and went to the 1942 Rose Bowl. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Phillipines, also playing on the football team at Bainbridge, Md.
Mr. Gatewood was a member of the St. Mary's Episcopal Church. He was owner/operator of the Chick Gatewood Sales Co. in Tifton for over 30 years and had an active retirement with Daisy (his wife), playing golf, hunting, fishing and going to the mountains. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Virginia Crisp Gatewood on Dec. 20, 1971.
He is survived by his wife, Daisy Howard Gatewood of Montezuma; five sons, a daughter and spouses: Mr. and Mrs. James Crisp (Billie) Gatewood, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Crisp Gatewood (Shea), Timothy Furlow Gatewood, Gerald Denham Gatewood, Lee Hooks Gatewood and Mr. and Mrs. Bob (Georgia Gatewood) Ledbetter; step sons and spouses: Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Howard (Gwen) Rumph, Mr. and Mrs. Stuart McKenzie (Maxie) Rumph; grandchildren Virginia Gatewood, Crisp Gatewood, Frances Gatewood, Layton Gatewood, Ginger Gatewood, James Gatewood, Ryan Gatewood, Will Gatewood, Ben Ledbetter, Gatewood Ledbetter, Jack Rumph, Molly Rumph, Winslow Rumph, Ryland Rumph and Virginia Rumph; sister Mrs. Hiram Keller Undercofler; and brother Timothy Furlow Gatewood.

Blanche Shields
AMERICUS -- Mrs. Blanche Shields, 88, of 830 Salters Mill Road, Americus died Aug. 5, 2003, at her residence with her family by her side. Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Monday, Aug. 11, at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Father Clif Marquis and Rev. Dan Ariail officiating.

Mrs. Shields was born January 22, 1915, daughter of the late George Copeland and the late Mary Catherine King Copeland. She was a retired teacher and librarian, a member of the Georgia Retired Educators Association, a member of Plains Garden Club and a member of PALS, a widow support group in Plains.
Survivors includes her older daughter Stella F. Shields of Flemington, N.J., her younger daughter Martha Mason and her son-in-law, Donald Mason of Americus. Her son, Gilbert Shields, lives in Jacksonville and daughter-in-law Teresa Shields of Americus. Nine grandchildren: Blanca Varela of New Jersey, Raul Goyo-Shields of Ontario, Stella E. Goyo-Shields of Flemington, N.J., Monique Basurco of Flemington, N.J., Tony Mason of Conyers, Mark Young of Americus, Shawn Shields of Americus, Rachel Shields of Americus and Rebecca Shields of Americus. Eight great grandchildren live in Canada, the U.S., and Venezuela. Also a number of nieces and nephews survive. Her husband Gilbert Shields preceded her in death.

ALEXANDRIA, Tenn. -- Funeral arrangements have been announced for Rosa Stokes, Georgia Southwestern State University's head women's basketball coach who died Thursday.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 11, at the Alexandria First Baptist Church in Alexandria, Tenn., according to the GSW Athletic Department.

Mr. Willie James Smothers was born in Sumter County on Jan. 12, 1927, to the parentage of the late Mr. Amos Smothers and the late Mrs. Jennie Chancey Smothers.
