Olen C. Duncan

AMERICUS — Mr. Olen C. Duncan, 77, 114 Sullivan Drive, passed away on Tuesday, March 7, 2006. Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 9, in the cemetery at Andersonvile National Historic Site.

Born April 19, 1928 in Webster County, Mr. Duncan was a son of the late Henry Brant Duncan and Katie Belle Phillips Duncan. He was a Baptist and a former employee of Scott Bedding Co. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.

The family will receive friends from 6 - 7:30 p.m. today at Hancock Funeral Home. At other times, friends may call at the residence of Patricia Duncan, 109 Grande Ave., Americus. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 409410, Atlanta, GA. 30384-9410.

Survivors include, three daughters, Patricia Duncan and Becky Duncan both of Americus and Ellen Duncan of Lake City, Fla.; a son and daughter-in-law, Raymond and Lisa Duncan of Plains; a sister, Pat Gross of Columbus; twin brothers, Theo Duncan and Cleo Duncan both of Auburn and three grandchildren including Randi Duncan of Americus.

Dorothy Andrews Sullivan

VININGS — Dorothy Andrews Sullivan, a seven-year resident of Vinings, passed away March 1, 2006, at the age of 91. She was born to Rees Mahone Andrews and Maybelle Timmerman Andrews, Aug. 23, 1914 in Plains. One of five children, she was predeceased by both parents and all four siblings. Dot married Pinkney Monroe Sullivan and lived in Zebulon for many years. After relocating to Griffin, she continued her life-long vocation as a grammar school teacher until she retired at age 65. Dot attended Georgia State Womans College in Valdosta, and graduated from the University of Georgia in Athens. While at UGA, she was a member of the Kappa Delta Sorority.

Dot had several passions in life including playing bridge, bowling, reading, going to the beach and international travel. As significant as all of these pastimes were to Dot, spending time with family and friends was her primary love.

Dot leaves behind her daughter, Mary Ann Bonsey of Treasure Island, Fla., son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Marita Sullivan of Marietta, grandsons, Mike Armistead of Bluffton, S.C. and Blair Sullivan of Bradenton, Fla., sisters-in-law, Helen Andrews of Atlanta and Milly Andrews of Griffin, and many nieces and nephews. Preceding Dot’s passing was a daughter, Sandra Elaine Hayes, brothers, Harold Andrews and Rees Andrews, sisters, Marjorie Sumerford and Virginia Hair, brothers-in-law, Gene Sumerford and Zera Hair and son-in-law, Frank Bonsey.

A memorial service honoring Dorothy will be held at noon on Saturday, March 18, 2006 at the Ansley Golf Club, 196 Montgomery Ferry Drive, NE, Atlanta, GA, (404) 875-1687. The memorial service will be followed by a luncheon.

Lawton Wendell Giddens

ELLAVILLE — Mr. Lawton Wendell Giddens, 81, of 63 Broad St., Ellaville, died Monday, March 6, 2006, at his home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 8, at Ellaville Baptist Church with burial to follow in the Ellaville Cemetery. The Rev. Ben Foxworth, the Rev. Ken Mauldin and Brother Troy Fripp will officiate.

Mr. Giddens was born Nov. 15, 1924 in Eastman, Dodge County, the youngest child of Benjamin Franklin Giddens and Annie Maude Mullis Giddens. Mr. Giddens graduated from Dodge High School in Eastman and from John A. Gupton School of Mortuary Science. He purchased Collins-Giddens Funeral Home in Ellaville in 1961, later changing the name to Giddens Funeral Home.

He was the owner and funeral director until the business was sold in 1999. In the early 1960s, he was co-owner of Giddens-Tante Funeral Home in Buena Vista. He established Giddens Used Cars in 1970, and operated this business until his declining health prevented him from doing so. He was an agent for the United Family Life Insurance Co. for many years.

Mr. Giddens designed wire floral trays for carrying potted plants, which he established into the business known as “Ellaville Floral Trays.” Having them made locally, he and his wife shipped them around the U.S. Mr. Giddens was one of the original ten businessmen who established the Schley County Industrial Corp., who purchased property to promote the growth of the economy. Mr. Giddens and his wife are owners of Schley Homes Inc. of which he was a founding member and then purchased the business several years ago.

Mr. Giddens was a charter member of the Ellaville Lions Club, a past member of the Schley County Board of Education, a former president of the Schley County PTA and was the Schley County Coroner at one time. Mr. Giddens had been a member of the Ellaville Baptist Church since 1961, was a Deacon Emeritus, served as training union director and was a member of the church choir.

Survivors include: his wife of 59 years, Marie M. Giddens; a daughter, Ginger G. Eubanks of Ellaville and a son, Daniel Lawton Giddens and wife Stephanie of Raleigh, NC.; grandchildren include Scott Giddens of Raleigh, NC., Steven and Lauren Vickery, Larry D Eubanks Jr. and Lane Bradley Eubanks, all of Ellaville.

Survivors also include: a brother, Joel Giddens of Athens also survives. Mr. Giddens was preceded in death by his sister, Aurelia Johns; two brothers, Ernest Giddens and Fred Giddens all of Eastman. He was also preceded in death by his son-in-law, Capt. Larry D. Eubanks Sr. on Sept. 15, 2004.

Active pallbearers will include: Larry D. Eubanks Jr., Lane Bradley Eubanks, Steven Vickery, Scott Giddens, Clint Long, Vernon Dillard, John Oscar Mathews and Robbie Brown. Honorary pallbearers will include: Frank Thrift and the active and inactive deacons of Ellaville Baptist Church.

Visitation will be held from 6 - 8 p.m. today at Watson-Giddens Funeral Home in Ellaville. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Ellaville Baptist Church Future Building Fund, P.O. Box 325, Ellaville, GA. 31806.

Mary Greene McLendon

OGLETHORPE — Mrs. Mary Greene McLendon, 97, of Oglethorpe died Sunday, March 5, 2006 in her sleep at home. She was born at her current home on Sept. 15, 1908 in Macon County. She was the daughter of the late George Washington Greene and Lelia Allen Greene. She devoted her time to caring for her family. She was a member of Corinth Methodist Church. She lived her faith and loved her family. Other than her parents and siblings, Mrs. McLendon was preceded in death by her husband of almost 50 years, Rodolph Allen McLendon on Jan. 12, 1983 and two grandchildren, Gerald Allen McLendon Jr. and Robertio Perdomo.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, March 8, at the Corinth Methodist Church in Oglethorpe. iIntermentwill be in Oglethorpe Memorial Gardens Cemetery. The Rev. Scott Brenton will officiate.

The family will receive friends from 6 - 8 today at the Watson-Mathews Funeral Home on 322 N. Dooly St., Montezuma, GA.

She is survived by: her children, Gerald Allen (Ann) McLendon of Athens, Tenn., Gloria McLendon (Jimmy) Wurst of Atlanta, Edwin Leo (Harriet) McLendon of Stone Mountain, Sandra McLendon (Robert) Perdomo of Guatemala City, Guatemala and Steve Andrew (Sharon) McLendon of Carrollton.

Survivors also include: grandchildren, Mary Ann McLendon (Thomas) Layman, James Edward (Karen) Wurst Jr., Steve Stanley (Patty) Wurst, David Carl (Michelle) Wurst, Melanie McLendon (Jeff) Morris, Susie Perdomo (Estuardo) Lehnhoff, Jason Mell (Amanda) McLendon, Andrew Steven McLendon and Allison McLendon (Robert) Hooten and 14 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be James Wurst, Steve Wurst, David Wurst, Jason McLendon, Andy McLendon and Michael McLendon. Flowers are welcomed or contributions may be made to Corinth Methodist Church, 1050 Ga. Highway 26 W., Oglethorpe, GA. 31068.

Ruth Bradshaw Sutton

COLUMBUS — The life of Ruth Bradshaw Sutton, 71, was celebrated on March 4, 2006, at McMullen Funeral Home Chapel in Columbus. Mrs. Sutton died Thursday, March 2, 2006 at Columbus Hospice House surrounded by her family.

Pastor Jerry Sauls from Columbus and Pastor Tom McClendon from Cuthbert officiated the service with interment at Geneva Cemetery, Geneva. The family received friends after the chapel service.

Mrs. Sutton was born Aug. 27, 1934, in Talbot County. Mrs. Sutton was the daughter of the late Lovie Belle Jackson Bradshaw and Walter “Buck” Bradshaw. She was one of 11 children. She was predeceased by siblings: J.W. Bradshaw, Lester Bradshaw, Grady Bradshaw, Alice Cuddington, Bobby Bradshaw and Henry Bradshaw.

Mrs. Sutton had worked many years as a dietitian for Patterson Hospital and Joe-Anne Burgin Nursing Home. Mrs. Sutton was also a retired caterer. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Cuthbert, The Pilot Club of Cuthbert and was a lifetime member of the Dietary Managers Association. She always enjoyed entertaining her family and friends and especially enjoyed her Pilot Club friendships.

She is survived by her husband, Eddie R. Sutton of Cuthbert; children: J.C. Carlisle Jr. (Helen) of Warner Robins, Betty Ann Bradshaw of Buena Vista, John W. Carlisle (Kim) of Manchester, Charles Carlisle (Pam) of Fortson, Peggy C. Morris (David) of Columbus, Kate Antley (Ron) of Geneva, Pamela Middleton (Frankie) of Columbus; four step-children: Debbie Pribble (Mike) of Fayetteville, N.C., Linda Monroe of Americus, Eddie Sutton Jr. of Oklahoma and Renee Hicks (Alex) of Americus; two brothers: Sonny Bradshaw of Manchester and Billy Bradshaw of Woodbury; two sisters: Grace Parker of Culloden and Betty McDaniel of Thomaston. Mrs. Sutton had 28 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Johnathan Richardson Jr.

MONTEZUMA — Johnathan Richardson Jr., 69, of Plains died March 3, 2006 at the Montezuma Health Care, Montezuma. Memorial services will be held at a later date according to Striffler-Hamby Mortuary in Columbus.

Mr. Richardson was born Sept. 23, 1936 in Harris County, son of Johnathan Richardson Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Teal Richardson. He retired from Symplex Nail with 27 years of Service.

Survivors include: his children, Nora (Tommy) McInnis, Rita (Jerry) Timmerman, Kathy (Ronald) Miller and Johnathan (Kristy) Richardson III; his brothers, William Richardson, Royce Richardson and Gene Richardson; a sister, Joyce Corcione; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Richard Alfred Waggoner

THOMASTON — Richard Alfred “Dick” Waggoner Sr., 81, of 118 Salbar St. died Saturday at Upson Regional Medical Center. Mr. Waggoner was born and raised in Crisp County. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1943 and served in the Mediterranean and Pacific theaters during World War II until his discharge in 1945.

Mr. Waggoner was a graduate of the University of Georgia. In 1966, he and his wife, the former Betty Harrison, moved to Thomaston and purchased the Western Auto Associate Store, which they operated until their retirement in 1995. Mr. Waggoner was a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church of Thomaston.

Funeral services for Mr. Waggoner will be held at 10 a.m. today at the First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Joe Blevins and Dr. Albert E. Simmons officiating. Burail will be in the Harrison Family cemetery in Cairo.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Waggoner is survived by: a daughter, Mrs. Anne (Peter) Beets of New Zealand; two sons, Richard A. (Jeanne) Waggoner Jr. of Cincinnati and James P. (Irene) Waggoner of LaGrange; a sister, Louise McKinley of Perry; a brother, Wendell Waggoner of Newnan; four granddaughters, Lillian Beets, Erica Beets, Amanda Waggoner and Eliza Waggoner and a grandson, Koen Beets.

The family may be contacted at the residence on Salbar Street and will received friends from 6 - 8 p.m. Monday at Pasley-Fletcher Funeral Home.

David Thomas Jones Sr.

AMERICUS — David Thomas Jones Sr., age 72, of 116 Sylvan Drive, died Friday morning, March 3, 2006 at his residence. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today from Faith Baptist Church, with the Rev. Jeff Gossett, the Rev. Wendy Joyner officiating. Burial will follow at Bertha Dozier cemetery in Macon County. Grandsons will serve as active pallbearers: Eric Register, Brandon Register, Kevin Register, Adam Register, Chad Larkin, Clint Larkin, Travis Johnson and Matthew Jones. The family received friends and family from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday evening, March 4, 2006, and at other times at the family residence, 116 Sylvan Drive, Americus.

Mr. Jones, a native of Macon County, was born the son of the late Luther Thomas Jones and Evelyn Rickles Jones on Sept. 29, 1933. He was a retired self-employed mechanic of Jones Tractor Truck Service and a member of Faith Baptist Church.

Mr. Jones is survived by his wife Faye C. Jones of Americus; three daughters and sons-in-law, Marcia Register and Stanley of Dublin, Debra Larkin and Butch of Gainesville, and Donna Wilson and John of Murrayville; two sons and daughter-in-law, David T. Jones Jr. of Jonesboro and John Daniel Jones and Diana of Americus; sister and brother-in-law, Lucille Johnson and Lewis of Americus; a brother, Jasper Lewis Jones also of Americus; 16 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews also survive.

Mr. Jones was preceded in death by his first wife Evelyn A. Jones, a daughter Patricia Jones, and a sister Sara Nell Davidson.

Mattie Will McLeod

AMERICUS — Mrs. Mattie Will McLeod, age 100, passed away early Friday morning, March 3, 2006, at Perfect Care in Americus. The family received friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday, March 4, at Hancock Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. today in the chapel of Hancock Funeral Home with interment to follow in Oak Grove Cemetery. The Rev. Hugh DeLoach and Dr. Harris Malcolm will officiate.

Memorial contributions may be made to Perfect Care, 114 Sullivan Drive, Americus, GA 31709, Hospice of Americus and Sumter County, P.O. Box 1434, Americus, GA 31709, or to the First Aid Kit at Central Baptist Church, 190 Upper River Road, Americus, GA 31709.

Born July 5, 1905, in Reynolds, Mrs. McLeod was a daughter of the late Clarence Vernon Powell and Livie Allmon Powell. She was a graduate of Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville. She taught school at Concord and worked at McClellan’s Dime Store before attending and graduating from Patterson Business School. She then became a bookkeeper for Wallis Electric Company, a position she held for many years.

Mrs. McLeod was a long-time member of the Trainmen’s Auxiliary in which she held several leadership positions. She was a founder of the first Americus garden club and was a former member of the 3 L’s Club. She joined Central Baptist Church on May 8, 1932, moving her letter from Ellaville Baptist Church with which she had affiliated several years earlier. A long list of her 73 years of activities within the church included faithful membership in the Kathleen Gardner Sunday School class, being a member of the Silvertones Choir, and serving as the outreach leader, visiting and witnessing to home-bound members and nursing home residents until she suffered a broken hip in July, 2003. In years past, she worked with Sunbeams, served as a circle leader, Sunday School teacher and Sunday School secretary, participated in the Bell Ministry and was the craft chairperson for Bible School. She was always faithful to contribute her home baked cookies and caramel cakes for special events.

Survivors include a daughter, Bess Spear of Americus; grandchildren Russell (and Judy) Speer of East Bernstadt, Ky., Jimmy Speer of Jacksonville, Fla., Donnie (and Susan) Norton of Leesburg, Becky Norton and Beth Norton, both of Americus; a sister, Sara Womack of Americus; a son-in-law, F.D. Norton Sr. of Americus; 8 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by two husbands, James Henry Ross Jr. and Irwin Neal McLeoad, a daughter, Martha Jim Norton, and a son-in-law, Charlie Speer.

Linda Jordan Waters

BLACKSHEAR — Mrs. Linda Jordan Waters, 63, passed away Thursday, March 2, 2006, at home in the presence of her loving family after a courageous 26-month battle with cancer.

She was the daughter of Eudell Carter Jordan and the late Marlow Jack Jordan.

Survivors include her adoring husband of 41 years, James Milton Waters Sr. of Blackshear; two daughters and sons-n-law, Kathy and Dean Aker of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Leslie and Dr. Kyler Crawford of Americus; a son, James M. Waters Jr. of Blackshear; a grandson, Sam Aker of Colorado Springs; two sisters, Cheryl Cooper (Bill) of Patterson and Janice Everette (Eddie) of Waycross; a brother, Jackie Jordan of Blackshear; a brother-n-law, Stephen M. Waters Jr. (Marilyn); two sisters-n-law, Milly Waters anad Nell Hutchinson of Marietta and Marjorie Leiter (Howard) of Columbia, S.C.; three nieces, Nancy Cooper of Patterson, Stephanie Thomas (Mike) of Fernandina Beach, Fla., and Melanie Sikes (John) of Acworth; a nephew, Steve Waters III of Blackshear; a great nephew, Joey Lee Jr. of Blackshear; a great niece, Mari Claire Sikes of Acworth and several other loving relatives and friends.

A graduate of the Blackshear High School Class of 1960, she graduated from Abraham Baldwin College in 1962, with an associate’s degree in secretarial science. She was employed with The Blackshear Bank for several years and many more with Waters Ford Co.

A devoted wife and mother, the community knew her for her warm personality, winning smile and caring ways. She was a talented cook and home maker who was known by all who knew her for her decorating skills.

Mrs. Waters was a very active, faithful member of First United Methodist Church, Blackshear, where she was on the Administrative Board, Council of Ministries and chairman of the Worship Committee. She was also a member of Wesley I Fellowship Sunday School Class, Wednesday Night Bible Study Group and the United Methodist Women of which she served as publicity chairman. She was a member of the Hester Bruce Carr Circle and Primetimers. She was a long-time member and soloist of the Chancel Choir for which she was a former director and chairman of the Choir Robe Committee.

Mrs. Waters was known for her love of her pets. She was a proud member of The Humane Society of the United States and the National Wildlife Federation which demonstrated her great love of animals.

Funeral services for Mrs. Waters will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 6, 2006, at First United Methodist Church.

iIntermentwill be in the Blackshear Cemetery.

Visitation for Mrs. Waters will be held from 6-9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

A viewing will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.

Active pallbearers will be nephews, Steve Waters III and Joey Lee Jr. plus cousins, Dr. Guy Jordan, Alan Jordan, Elaine Richter, James E. Wells Jr., Reginald Riggins, Hinson Jordan and Wanda Lane.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of Wesley Sunday School Class I & II of First United Methodist Church, members of Blackshear High School Class of 1960, her Wednesday Lunch Group, Dr. Stephen L. Buckley, Brenda Davis and Hospice Satilla employees.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Blackshear First United Methodist Church Sanctuary Fund, 225 Church St., Blackshear GA 31516; Hospice Satilla, 1921 Alice St., Suite A-1, Waycross GA 31501 or to the Southeast Cancer Unit, P.O. Box 2764, Waycross GA 31502.

W. Eady Copeland

AMERICUS — Funeral services for Mr. W. Eady Copeland, 92, of 2001 S. Lee St., will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, March 3, 2006 from graveside at Hillcrest cemetery and the Rev. Dan Chappell and the Rev. Bob Whitmire will officiate. Mr. Copeland died Feb. 28, at Magnolia Manor in Americus.

Mr. Copeland once also lived in Sylvester and he was a retiree from the Colonial Pipeline Co. He was born on May 27, 1913, in Carroll County to the parents of Willis Eugene Copeland and Lula Eady Copeland. Mr. Copeland’s wife, Mildred Sumner Copeland, preceded him in death on Nov. 19, 1989. He was a member of F & AM #194 in Sylvester and First Baptist Church in Americus.

Survivors include: daughter and son-in-law, Alice and Dan Chappell of La Porte, Texas; three grandchildren, Danielle and Fred Kinder of Keithville, La., Bill and Judy Chappell of Gretna, La. and Katie and Thad Pittman of La Porte, Texas; seven great-grandchildren; a niece, Gail and Ervan Airail of Americus; a brother-in-law, Gordon and Jean Sumner of Sumner.

Mr. Copeland was preceded in death by siblings: Roy Copeland, Eunice Blocker, Nellie Brogden and Myrtle Glawson.

The family will receive friends from 6 - 7:30 p.m. today at Banks Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Mattie Marshall Center, Magnolia Manor, 2001 S. Lee St., Americus, GA. 31709.
