AMERICUS — Zola Ledford W hitaker, 93, of Richland, formerly of Columbia, S.C., died Thursday, Feb. 16, 2006, at Magnolia Manor Nursing Center, Americus.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., today, at Richland Baptist Church. Burial will be at 11 a.m., Monday, Feb. 20, 2006 at Snow Hill cemetery — RFD, Bakersville, N.C. The Rev. Jim Eubanks will officiate. Visitation was held from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday at L.B. Smith Funeral Home, Richland.
Born Oct. 20, 1912 in Mitchell County, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Caroline Davis Johnson and the late Waldon Johnson.
A member of Richland First Baptist Church, she was a sales lady in department stores for many years. She was a member of H.O. Club and a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Ledford. Born to them was one son, Charles D. Ledford. She was later married
to Joe Whitaker. She was preceded in death by him, also. She was also preceded in death by her brothers and sisters: Claude, Oscar, Luther, Ralph, Earnest, Mary, Pearl, Ethel and Hermon Johnson.
She is survived by her son, Charles Ledford and wife Trudie of Richland; one grandson, Charles Ledford Jr; 11 nieces and 12 nephews, cousins and many friends.

RICHLAND — Funeral arrangements for the late Ms. Gertrude Battle of 1330 Ga. Highway 26 East, Buena Vista, who passed on Thursday, Feb. 24, 2006 in the Four County Health Center, Richland, will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 4, 2006, from the St. Luke Baptist Church. Elder Emmett Battle will officiate, and burial will follow in the church cemetery. The remains will lie at the church one hour prior to the services.
Ms. Gertrude Battle was born on May 1, 1916 in Sumter County, to the parentage of the late Mr. Emmett Battle and the late Mrs. Anna Williams Battle.
She leaves to cherish her memories one sister, Ms. Drusilla Owens; one brother, Mr. James (Minnie) Battle; a devoted niece, Mrs. Pearline (James) Josey; four devoted nephews, Mr. Derrick Josey, Mr. James (Lisa) Battle, Mr. Tony (Vanessa) Battle and Mr. Emmett Dewayne (Monika) Josey; one devoted great-niece, Ms. Ericka Josey; several other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends also survive.

AMERICUS — Funeral services for Mrs. Willie Maude Jackson of 304 Brookdale Drive, Americus, who passed on Sunday, Feb. 26, 2006 at her home will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 4, from the Union Tabernacle Baptist Church. The Rev. Norris Harris will officiate and burial will follow in the Eastview cemetery. There will be a viewing of the body one hour prior to services at the church.
Mrs. Willie Maude Jackson was born in Ashburn, Turner County on Sept. 16, 1936 to the parentage of the late Mr. Enoc Jackson and the late Mrs. Florine Jackson.
She leaves to mourn her passing: her husband, Mr. Alma Jackson; two sons, Mr. Kelvin Jackson and Mr. Xavier (Chaka) Jackson; one brother, Mr. Johnny Jackson; one sister, Ms. Georgia (Anthony) Fields; three step-daughters, Ms. Linda Jackson, Ms. Helen Jackson and Ms. Susie (Charles) Ingram; nine grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends also survive.

MRS. ELMA RUTHERFORD was born in Stewart County, GA (Lumpkin) on February 6, 1922 to the parentage of the late Mr. Bud Brown and the late Mrs. Eldora (Crump) Brown. She was educated in public schools of Stewart County. Mrs. Rutherford received her typing training from South Georgia Technical-Vocational School in 1971 and later went back to school to receive her high school diploma in 1974. For most of her life, Mrs. Rutherford was a dietician for the Americus City Public Schools and later worked for Dixie Bakery with her daughter and son-in-law. She was married
to the late Mr. Homer William Rutherford and to their union ten children were born.

VETERAN MARCELLUS “China” MAYBERRY was born was born November 12, 1913 in Sumter County, GA to the late Mr. Larkin Mayberry and the late Mrs. Ida Mae Christopher Mayberry. He attended the public schools of Sumter County, GA. He served his country during World War Two, entering the United States Army in 1942. He was honorably discharged in 1946. He participated in the battles in the Rhineland in Central Europe, receiving the American Theater Ribbon, a Gold Medal for Good Conduct, a Bronze Star and a WWII Victory Medal. He was married
to the late Mrs. Henrietta Banks. For many years he worked for IMC of Americus, GA. In 1935 he joined the Friendship Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Frank Johnson. He was married
to the late Mrs. Henrietta Gary Mayberry in 1938.

MR. LINDBERG JACKSON was born December 11, 1942 in Preston, GA to the late Mr. Lenward Jackson and Florrie King—Jackson. At an early age, Lindberg joined the Mt. Ararat Baptist Church in Preston, GA He also spent many years worshipping and participating at the Saint Mark A M E Church in Archery (Plains), GA. In searching for better opportunity, he relocated to Atlanta, GA.
He was educated in the Georgia Public Schools, graduating from Sumter County High School. He received a certificate from Albany Technical Trade School in Electrical Technology, but he made his career in Bakery. He was employed at Publix Bakery Department until his health failed.

MRS. AGNES CLARK WATERS was born in Sumter County, GA on October 15, 1917 to the parentage of the late Mr. Henry Clark and the late Mrs. Annie Dowdell Clark. She was the 14th of 16 children. She was educated in Chattanooga, TN . She was married
to the late Mr. James Waters and to this union one child was born. For many years she worked for the Gimbels-Schusters Department Store. In 1977, she united with the Community Baptist Church of Greater Milwaukee, WI. During the last several years she used her accounting skills for the Community Credit Union and served on the Board of Directors.

Rev. Vanessa McKay was born July 18, 1962 in Buena Vista, GA to the parentage of the late Mr. Arthur James McKay and the late Mrs. Gertrude Gardner McKay, both of Buena Vista, GA. She attended the Tri-County High School where she was voted Most Talented of her class. She continued her education at Fort Valley State University where she recently earned a B. S. Degree in Social Work.
Vanessa professed Jesus Christ in her life at an early age. In 2003 under the leadership and guidance of Elder John A. Simpson, she joined the Temple of Miracles Worship Center in Warner Robins, GA. There she served as a member of the ministerial staff, choir director for the Children of Today Youth Choir, and participated in the Drama Ministry. She was also a member of the Adult Sunday School class. She was a licensed preacher.

MRS. HATTIE MAE BURTON was born October 28, 1940 in Webster County, Parrott, GA to the parentage of the late Mr. Felton Shelton and the late Mrs. Mary Lou Smith. She was educated in the public schools of Webster County. At an early age, she joined the Mitchell Grove Baptist Church where she served as an usher. She late joined the Zion Hope Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. George F. Monts. She was married
to the late Mr. Lonnie Burton on April 24, 1957.

MR. WILLIAM AUGUSTA MOORE was born in Sumter County, GA on August 15, 1937 to the parentage of the late Mr. John Wesley Moore and the late Mrs. Louvenia Williams Moore. At an early age, he joined the Jerusalem Grove Baptist Church under the pastorage of Rev. Tom Cherry. He received his education in the public schools of Sumter County, GA. For many years Mr. Moore lived in the city of Atlanta, GA.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 8, 2012 at 2:00PM in the chapel of Watson-Giddens Funeral Home in Ellaville with burial to follow in Magnolia Park cemetery in Warner Robins, GA. Miss Paulk was born June 4, 1955 in Bibb County, GA, the daughter of Betsy Rogers Perryman and James Gaston Paulk. She was a homemaker and a member of Ellaville Baptist Church.
Miss Paulk is survived by three brothers, Robert Paulk and wife Sandra of Ellaville, Gary Paulk and wife Valerie of Ellaville, Mike Paulk and wife Gail of Middletown, OH; two sisters, Irma Jean Wall and husband Harold of Ellaville, Becky Reppert and husband Jay of Blakely, GA. Several nieces and nephews also survive. In addition to her parents, Miss Paulk was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Hobkirk and a brother, James Bracewell.
Active pallbearers will include Austin Bentley, Nik Bentley, Tre’ Leinart, Plez James, Steve James, and Kevin Bentley.

Cynthia “Cindy” Braswell Shuford, 55, of Columbus, GA, died Sunday, September 2, 2012, at Magnolia Manor of Columbus.
A graveside funeral service will be held on Thursday, September 6, 2012, at 11:00 AM, at Ortona cemetery in Moore Haven, FL.
Ms. Shuford was born December 31, 1956, in Savannah, GA, to John Thomas and Leigh Lumpkin Braswell. She was Episcopalian by faith and she was a homemaker. Coming from Moore Haven, FL, she had lived in the area since 2000. She was preceded in death by her parents.
She is survived by two brothers, John Braswell of Okeechobee, FL, and Jamie Braswell of Roanoke, AL; and by a sister, Dawn Lambertus of Ft. Lauderdale, FL.

Mr. Harbuck was born May 6, 1940, to Willie Sam and Alice Mae Waldrop Harbuck. He was self-employed in construction as a contractor. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Willie Harbuck, Jr., a sister, Gertrude Scott, and a grandson, Lemuel Harbuck, III.
He is survived by his former wife, Debbie Lawhorn of Buena Vista, GA; by three sons, Lemuel Harbuck, Jr. (Ellen) of Buena Vista, GA, Kevin Harbuck (Pauline) of Mauk, GA, and Kim Harbuck of Atlanta, GA; by a daughter, Jennifer Harbuck of Americus, GA; two brothers, Earl Harbuck and Alfred Harbuck; four sisters, Alma Jean, Frances, Judy Carden, and Janice Saint. Eight Grandchildren, Zachary Harbuck, Kasey Harbuck, Brandy Harbuck, Myranda Harbuck, Haley Harbuck, Jamie Harbuck, Cheyenne Harbuck and Isabelle Harbuck and three Great-Granchildren, Rayna Harbuck, Karlie Harbuck and Kameron Harbuck also survive.

ELLAVILLE, GA -- - Mr. Sylvester G. (Lou) Fleck, age 74, of Leesburg, GA died Sunday, August 26, 2012 at his residence. Funeral services will be held 10:00 AM, Wednesday, August 29, 2011 at Andersonville National Cemetery. Rev. Robert Orr will officiate.
Mr. Fleck was born December 31, 1937 in Dubois County, IN, the son of Ludwina Dall Fleck and Leo Fleck. He was a retired Air Force Master Sergeant and also served in the Army and Navy. Mr. Fleck served during the Vietnam War and also retired from Proctor and Gamble in Oglethorpe and had run a lawn care business. He was a member of the VFW and American Legion Post 191.
Survivors include his wife, Ann Fleck; one daughter, Melissa Che Fleck-Giddens and husband Brandon of Leesburg, GA; one son, Dean Bennett and wife Tina of Ellaville; one brother, Ken Fleck and wife Pat of Jasper IN; two sisters Bernice Miller of Huntingburg, IN and Dot Jerger of Jasper, IN. Four grandchildren also survive.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 until 8:00 PM on Tuesday, August 28, 2012 at Watson-Giddens Funeral Home in Ellaville, GA.

Robert E. (Jie) McCorkle, 90, of Buena Vista, GA, died Saturday, August 25, 2012, at his residence.
A graveside funeral service will be held on Tuesday, August 28, 2012 at 11:00 AM at Union United Methodist Church cemetery with Reverend David Chapman officiating. Serving as Honorary Pallbearers will be Ryan Lindsey, Chandler Jones, Austin Bell, Vincent Weed, and Jeff Wilkes. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday evening from 6-8 pm.
Mr. McCorkle was born April 18, 1922, in Buena Vista, GA, to William Andrew and Ellie McCorkle. He was Baptist by faith and a lifelong resident of Buena Vista. He had been employed as an inspector with General Motors. An avid coon hunter, he was a member of the Blue Tick Hound Association. He loved fishing and Braves Baseball and enjoyed singing and listening to Gospel music. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Andrew McCorkle, James Eugene McCorkle, and Milton McCorkle and by two sisters, Marion McCorkle Hebert and Mary McCorkle Cunniff.
He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Agnes Weed McCorkle and her daughters and son-in-law, Gayle P. Webb and Vicki P. and Roger Bell, all of Buena Vista, GA. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews and by three grandchildren, Heath Bell, Candice Bell Jones, and Carmen Webb Holloway, and by four great-grandchildren, Ryan Lindsey, Austin Bell, Amber Jones, and Chandler Jones.

Costella Knighton
AMERICUS - Funeral services for Mr. Costella Knighton will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 26, 2006, at Friendship Baptist Church with the Rev. Melvin McCluster officiating.
Mr. Costella Knighton, son of the late Mr. Jeff Knighton and Mrs. Ora Mae Brown Knighton, was born May 2, 1943, in Sumter County. Mr. Knighton was also reared by Mr. Hiawatha Colbert Sr., who preceded him in death. In 1964, he was joined in holy matrimony to Ms. Ethel Robinson, who also preceded him in death.
Mr. Knighton's earlier years were spent in Americus, where he received his education in the Sumter County School System. At the age of 18, he moved to Detroit in pursuit of greater opportunities. He lived there for over 30 years and was employed by General Motors. He later moved to Hartford, Conn., where he resided for 15 years. Following a brief stay in Atlanta, he moved back to Americus, where he lived for eight years in the caring arms of a devoted niece and nephew, Linda and Christopher Banks.
The sun finally set on Mr. Knighton's life on Thursday, April 20, 2006, at which time the battle was fought and the victory won!
He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Ora Mae Brown Colbert of Morrow. He also leaves to cherish his legacy three sisters and three brothers: Min. Annie Ruth Knighton- Crumbley of Americus, Mrs. Joann (Richard) Brown of Hartford, Conn., Mrs. Kaye Crumbley of Morrow, Mr. Larry Colbert of Stone Mountain, Mr. Samuel Colbert of Hartford, Conn., and Mr. Hiawatha Colbert Jr. of Ideal. One brother, Mr. Bobbie (Addie) Colbert Sr. precedes him in death. Two loving aunts, Mrs. Ollie Knighton Gant and Mrs. Willie Mae Knighton Powell, both of Americus. A very dear childhood friend, Mr. Waldo White, and a host of other family and friends also survive.
