Johnnie Mae Thornton Tyner
AMERICUS - Funeral services for Johnnie Mae Thornton Tyner of 108-D Magnolia Manor Nursing Center, who passed on Tuesday, April 25, 2006, in the Sumter Regional Hospital, will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 3, from the Mt. Olive Baptist Church. The Rev. H.C. Wilson will officiate and burial will follow in the Eastview cemetery. There will be a viewing of the body one hour prior to the services at the church.
Mrs. Johnnie Mae Thornton Tyner was born in Randolph County on June 22, 1925, to the parentage of the late Mr. John Wesley Thornton and the late Mrs. Anna Mae Rembert Thornton.
She leaves to cherish her memory: her children, Mrs. Sarah (Odell) Bacon, Mr. Howard Stafford Jr., Mr. Jerome (Earlene) Russell, Mr. Albert Johnson, Mr. James Russell, Mr. Carlton (Toni) Russell and Mrs. Linda (Darrell) Norman; three sisters, Ms. Pearline Perry, Mrs. Jessie B. (Albert) Cummings and Ms. Roberta Clay; two stepchildren, Ms. Barbara Scott and Mr. James Daniels; 40 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; 16 great, great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends also survive.

Minor Turner
ST. LOUIS — Mr. Minor Turner, 97, of 26 Patriarch Court, St. Louis, formerly of 520 Claude Rd., Plains, died Monday, April 3, 2006, at St. Luke Hospital in St. Louis. Funeral services will be held from graveside at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 6, at Andersonville National Historic Site cemetery with the Rev. Tommy McConnell officiating. The family will receive friends at the cemetery following the services.
Mr. Turner was born Dec. 31, 1908, the son of the late J.G. Turner and Olindsa Bryant Turner. Mr. Turner was a retired farmer and was of the Baptist faith. He served in the U.S. Army serving in World War II and retired from the service with the rank of master sergeant.
Mr. Turner is survived by a daughter, Ginger Dominik of Schwarzbach, Germany; four sisters, Nancy Cox, Pellie Newton, Olive Turner and Stella Eunice; four brothers, Lewis, Gordon, Floyd and Larry Turner.
Also surviving are two granddaughters, Amy Goodman and her husband Tom of O’Fallon, Mo. and Stephanie Jill Hardy of Rochester Hills, Mich. and as well as six great-grandchildren, Tyler, Thomas, Megan, Mason, Emma and Lily. Mr. Turner was preceded in death by his wife, Echo Senette Akridge Turner on Oct. 23, 2002.

Dorothy Silver Barge
COBB - Mrs. Dorothy Silver Barge, 83, 248 N. Spring Creek Circle, Cobb, passed away early on Monday morning, April 3, 2006, at her residence. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 5, in the DeSoto United Methodist Church with the Rev. Steve Giglio and the Rev. Connie Walker officiating. iIntermentwill follow in Oak Grove Cemetery.
A daughter of the late Robert Marshall Harbuck and Della Brown Harbuck, she was born on July 7, 1922, a native and lifetime resident of Sumter County. Mrs. Barge was active in her church, DeSoto United Methodist Church, and was a faithful member of the DeSoto United Methodist Women.
She was a former member of Lee Street United Methodist Church and was a retired employee of Manhattan Shirt Co. She was an avid fisherwoman and was known for catching large appallusa catfish.
The family will receive friends from 6 - 8 p.m. tonight at Hancock Funeral Home. At other times, friends may call at the residence of Evon and Harold Spurlin, 2897 Hwy. 389 East, DeSoto. Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Evon and Harold Spurlin of DeSoto, Patricia and Johnny Ragsdale of Americus and Barbara and Tim Floyd of Sycamore; a brother and two sisters-in-law, Clinton and Elsie Harbuck of Augusta and Helen Harbuck of Americus; stepchildren, Betty Jo Hayes of Atlanta and Sid and Reva Barge of Lee County.
Survivors also include grandchildren, Terri and Stan Jones of Americus, Kim Morgan of Lee County, Dawn and Mark Pittman of Eatonton, Chan and Sarah Freeman of Greensboro, Christopher and Dawn Floyd of Sycamore and Jennifer and Chad Kendrick of Ashburn; great-grandchildren, Benjamin Goodin of Leslie and Jeremy Morgan of Lee County, Cody Jones of Americus and Corey Jones of Eatonton; great, great-granddaughter, Destiny Goodin; step-grandchildren, Josh and Christine Hayes of Atlanta, Sarah Barge and Joseph Barge both of Leesburg; a step great-granddaughter, Catherine Hayes of Atlanta and number of nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Barge was preceded in death by her first husband, W.T. Silver Jr. and her second husband, Joseph Barge; three brothers and a sister.

Elizabeth Dixon Miller
ELLICOTT CITY, Md. - Mrs. Elizabeth (Beth) Dixon Miller, 61, passed away Friday, March 31, 2006, at her home in Ellicott City, Md. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 6, at the Lutheran Church of the Holy Comforter in Baltimore, Md. A graveside service and interment will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 8, at Sunset Memorial Gardens with Dr. Bob Whitmire of First Baptist Church officiating.
Friends may call locally at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Baldwin, 126 Wood Valley Rd., Americus, and the family will also receive friends following the services on Saturday morning, April 8.
Mrs. Miller was born on Dec. 13, 1944, in Americus to the late James C. Dixon and Mary Lou Williams Dixon. She was a graduate of Americus High School and Auburn University. She taught school in Columbus, Southland Academy and most recently in Ellicott City, Md.
Survivors include: her husband of 35 years, Mr. David Miller of Ellicott City, Md.; a son, Dixon Miller and daughter-in-law, Vanessa Miller of Atlanta. Also surviving are two sisters, Sheila Dixon Grubbs and husband James K. Grubbs of Cordova, Tenn. and Janis Dixon Baldwin and husband Ray Baldwin of Americus and a number of nieces and nephews also survive.

Jerry Lane Tyler
ELLAVILLE - Jerry Lane Tyler, 65, of Ellaville died Monday, April 3, 2006 at his residence. Graveside funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 5, at Union Methodist Cemetery, Marion County with the Rev. Tom Edwards officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 - 8 p.m. tonight at Tante Funeral Home, Buena Vista.
Mr. Tyler was born March 2, 1941, in Marion County, the son of Willie Green Tyler and Frances Grace Allen Tyler. He had lived in Schley County for the past nine years having lived in Americus and Marion County most of his life. He was a mechanic with J & M Tank Lines, Americus.
Survivors include: his sons, Anthony Tyler of Tazewell and Russell Tyler of Ellaville; sister, Linda Addison of Colquitt; grandchildren, Maranda Tyler, Amber Tyler and Michael Tyler and a special and devoted friend, Glynda Watson of Mauk. Tante Funeral Home of Buena Vista is in charge of arrangements with Kim Tyler, Morris McGhee, Doug Cunningham, Jeremy Underwood, Shannon White and Tim Allen are pallbearers.

Sarah M. Williams
AMERICUS - Mrs. Sarah M. Williams, 85, 406 Pinecrest Drive, passed away on Saturday, April 1, 2006, in St. Francis Hospital. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today in the Andersonville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Tommy Maddox officiating. iIntermentwill follow in the cemetery at the Andersonville National Historic Site.
Born May 10, 1920 in Cedartown, Mrs. Williams was a daughter of the late William Mooney and Clemente Laura Maness Mooney. Her husband, the late Ernest Paul Williams, preceded her in death on Jan. 7, 1994. The family received friends from 6 - 8 p.m. on Monday, April 3. At other times, friends may call at the family residence, 406 Pinecrest Drive.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, Memorial/Honorial Fund, P.O. Box 6744, Columbus, GA 31917-6744. Mrs. Williams was a member of the Andersonville United Methodist Church. She was a retired employee of Manhattan Shirt Co. and worked for a number of years at the Tog Shop.

Eva Moye
NEWARK, NJ - Ms. Eva Moye, age 74, 223 West Ranyon St., Newark, New Jersey passed Wednesday, March 29, 2006.
Graveside service will be conducted 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 4, 2006 at Eastview Cemetery, Ashby St., Americus, Georgia.
Mrs. Moye was born August 17, 1931 in Americus, Sumter County, Georgia to the late Gordon Moye, Sr. and Beatrice Denson Moye. She was educated in the public school system of Sumter County. For several years, she was a citizen of Newark, New Jersey.
Survivors include children Rosalind Moye, Newark, NJ; Russell Moye Newark, NJ. Surviving grandchildren are Koron Moye, Bianca Williams, Raj Moye, Darrell Moye, Jahkwei Fairley. Miss Moye also leaves behind her brothers Gordon Moye, Jr., Springfield, MA; Phillip Moye, Americus, GA; as well as a host of nieces and nephews, including a devoted niece, Neppi Jackson, Americus, GA and a devoted Nephew, Edwin Moye, Leesburg, FL; and host of other relatives and friends.

D.C. 'Bill' Burk Jr.
SUMTER COUNTY - Mr. D.C. 'Bill' Burk Jr., 77, died very unexpectedly on Sunday evening, May 7, 2006, from injuries he sustained in a traffic accident while in route to his home after a deacon's meeting he had attended at Bethel Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. today at Hancock Funeral Home. At other times, friends may call at the family residence, 392 North Spring Creek Circle, Cobb. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 10, in the Bethel Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Reed Crumbliss officiating. iIntermentwill follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Deacons of Bethel Baptist Church are requested to serve as honorary pallbearers.
A native of Sumter County, Mr. Burk was born Feb. 18, 1929, a son of the late Dow Clifton Burk Sr. and Sara Marguerite Fowler Burk. He was a graduate of the University of Georgia and served as a teacher-coach for two years in Morgan before entry into the U.S. Air Force in 1950.
After serving for four years in the Air Force, he became the manager of the surplus property warehouse at South Georgia Technical School from which he retired in 1984. He was a member and deacon of Bethel Baptist Church and through the years, had served in many leadership roles in the church including his service as a Sunday School teacher and a nursery attendant.
His love for the church was well known, and his family requests that memorial contributions be made to Bethel Baptist Church, 846 Lane Store Rd., Americus, GA 31709.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Beverly M. Burk; two daughters and a son-in-law, Kay Hofland of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Leigh Ann and Gene Webb of Leesburg; a son and daughter-in-law, David and Barbara Burk of Pinehurst; grandchildren, Kristen Burk and Brad Burk both of Pinehurst, Justin Hofland of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Bo Webb of Leesburg.

The Rev. Dr. J.R. Campbell
AMERICUS - Funeral services for the Rev. Dr. J. R. Campbell of Davenport Street, Americus will be held at 2 p.m. today, May 11, 2006, at Allen Chapel A.M.E. Church. Burial will follow at Staley Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Campbell died on Thursday, May 4, 2006, at Sumter Regional Hospital.
The Rev. Joseph R. Campbell, son of the late Rev. and Mrs. Henry Campbell, was born on Feb. 25, 1925, in Newport News, Va. The family moved from Newport News, Va., to Georgetown, S.C., where he attended the public schools, and matured into an adult. He further studied at Beach High in Savannah and Turner Seminary in Atlanta.
He was converted at the early age of 12 years and was called to preach at the age of 14 years. He was licensed to preach at Dickerson A.M.E. Church in Georgetown, S.C., and was admitted to the Old Georgia Annual Conference in 1945. He was ordained an Itinerant Deacon in 1949, and ordained an Itinerant Elder in 1953. He has served as pastor of churches in the Old Georgia Annual Conference, Atlanta Conference, the Augusta Ga. Conference, the Southwest Conference, South Conference and the Macon Georgia Conference. He has been appointed a Presiding Elder twice in the Valdosta District and the Eastern District.
On Dec. 24, 1953, he married
Ms. Mamie Pleasant, and to this union were born five children, Joseph Jr., Albert, Douglas, Debra and Jerry.
The Rev. Campbell has served in many areas of civic work, the most prominent being his work during the Civil Rights movement. His efforts resulted in improved conditions throughout the county. He was one of the persons to re-charter the Americus chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. The charter members were the late Sam Weston, E.D. Sims, Paul Jones who served as president with J.R. Campbell serving as vice president, and Mrs. Mary Paschal, secretary.
The Rev. Campbell later served as president from 1964-1970. Among his many achievements are: delegate to the White House conference to fulfill these rights under President Lyndon Johnson in 1966, in Washington D.C. Among the many awards given to him are: Doctor of Humane Letters (honorary) for his contributions to the Civil Rights Movement, Doctor of Divinity (honorary) from Faith College, Birmingham, Ala., for his outstanding church work. His motto in life was, 'It is nicer to be nice.'
He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 52 years, Mrs. Mamie Campbell; six children, Joseph (Donnel) Campbell Jr. of Louisville, Ky., the Rev. Albert (Carolyn) Campbell, Douglas (Mary) Campbell, Mrs. Debra Brinson and Jerry (Cynthia) Campbell, all of Americus, and Ms. Claudia Bell Williams of Newark, N.J.; one sister, Mrs. Evelyn Morgan of Warren, Ohio; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends also survive.

AMERICUS - Funeral Services for Little Miss Deonia Q. McCoy, age 6, of 115 East Peppermint Way, will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, May 12, 2006, at the sanctuary of e Big Bethel Baptist Church, 1330 N. Jackson St., where the Rev. Calvin Rollins is the Host Pastor. Her burial will follow in Eastview Cemetery. Deonia died Sunday, May 7, 2006, at Sumter Regional Hospital.
Deonia was born Aug. 29, 1999, to the parentage of Leon and Vestella Wright McCoy in Americus. She was a precious angel who enjoyed reading and dancing. She was a bright student in Mrs. Angela Clemons' kindergarten class at Cherokee Elementary School. Her ambition was to become a schoolteacher.
Her bright smile will forever be cherished by her parents, Mr. Leon McCoy and Mrs. Vestella McCoy; seven brothers, Courtney Wright, Latrell McCoy, Larell McCoy, Leon McCoy Jr., Antravious McCoy, Kelcey McCoy and Jaheim McCoy; two sisters, Kiarra McCoy and Quantice McCoy; one newphew, Jonorrian Davis; two grandmothers, Mrs. Jessie P. McCoy and Mrs. Willie Pearl Wright; eight aunts, Lillie Bradley, Ola McCoy, Easter Hayes, Betty McCoy, Willie Ruth Peterson and friend Willie Burton, Ira Pearl (Wardell) Thomas, Rose Marie Thomas and friend Gregory Davis, and Mary Jane (Willie B.) James A. Schmidt
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - James A. Schmidt, 70, of Jacksonville, Fla., died suddenly on Tuesday, May 9, 2006.
His funeral service will be at 12:30 p.m. Friday, May 12, at Andersonville National Cemetery. The Rev. Robert Beckham will officiate.
A native of Americus, Ga., Mr. Schmidt grew up on the family farm, Hillcrest Dairy in Sumter County. Growing up, he and his family attended the First Baptist Church of Americus. Mr. Schmidt graduated from Americus High School in 1953, and he was a football letterman. An Eagle Scout, Mr. Schmidt was active with the Boy Scouts his entire life.
He was a graduate of Georgia Tech, and was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. Mr. Schmidt was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was employed for 23 years with GE, and he also was a licensed real estate agent for over 30 years. Mr. Schmidt was a resident of Jacksonville, Fla., for over 20 years, and was an avid sailor, earning his yachting license. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Jacksonville, and attended Beach United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his daughter: Sharon Hart and her husband Jason, Smyrna; two step-daughters: Christa Anderson, Atlanta, Dee Anderson O'Connor and her husband Mike, Savannah; three grandchildren: Benjamin Hart, Robert Hart and Virginia Hart, all of Smyrna; his former wife: Judy Downing, Savannah; two sisters, including his twin: Jean Schmidt Bowen and her husband Dr. John M., Athens, Mary Ann Schmidt Williams and her husband John C., Pearson, a brother-in-law: Luther F. Wood, Albany; one niece and seven nephews.
The family will receive friends from 10-11:30 a.m. Friday at Kimbrell-Stern Friday prior to the service.
