Harris Salter

ALBANY - Harris Salter, 70, a retired City of Albany meter reader, responded to the Master's summons for eternal rest on May 6, 2006. The service will be at 3 p.m., Wednesday, with burial next to his parents at Oak Grove cemetery in Americus. Family will receive friends at the service. Harris was born in 1935 in Americus, son of the late Arthur Bennett Harris Salter of Sumter County and Janie Lee (Kent) Salter of Valdosta, and attended Americus-Sumter High School.

In 1953, he enlisted in the United States Navy and served three years as a welder in the Seabees, and was discharged overseas in Lyautey, Morocco. He began his career with the City of Albany in 1965 and retired in 1988. He devoted his retirement to his church, Albany Baptist, which he played an active role, graduating in 2001 with a Doctorate in Theology.

To cherish his loving memory are his devoted brother, Herschel Davenport of Albany, his four children, Rose Marie Key of Tallahassee, Fla., son William Arthur Salter of Tampa, Fla., Betty Jean Dawson of Tampa, and Elaine Ruby Hicks of Tallahassee, Fla., and eight grandchildren, Alicia Terrell of Boca Raton, Fla., Kyle and Evan Key and Matthew Hicks, all of Tallahassee, Fla., Alexis Salter, Marina Dawson, Nikita Dawson and Victoria Dawson, all of Tampa, Fla., and James Craig Williams of Albany, and numerous nieces and nephews, as well as a host of other friends who cared for him patiently with love.

Andrew Perry

AMERICUS - Funeral services for Mr. Andrew Perry of 503 W. Church St., Americus, who passed on Saturday, May 6 2006, at Sumter Regional Hospital will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 10, at Friendship Baptist Church. The Rev. Hosie Waters will officiate and burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery. There will be a viewing of the body one hour prior to the services at the church.

Mr. Andrew Perry was born in Schley County on April 22, 1940 to the parentage of the late Mrs. Lula Mae Gant and Mr. Robert Perry, who survives.

In addition to his father, he leaves to mourn his passing: his wife of 24 years, Mrs. Catherine B. Perry; three sons, Mr. Efrem Berry, Mr. Bernard Perry and Mr. Andrew Perry Jr., two daughters, Ms. Kerry Williams and Mrs. Elizabeth (James) Johnson, seven grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends also survive.

Barnum Funeral Home will be in charge of these arrangements.

Marie Carter Smith Ward

AMERICUS - Funeral services for Mother Marie Carter Smith Ward of 460 Arch Helms Rd., Americus, will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, May 13, 2006, from the Americus Pentecostal Church of Apostolic Faith. Bishop Darryl Taylor will officiate and burial will follow in the Eastview cemetery. There will be a viewing of the body one hour prior to services at the church.

Mother Marie Carter Smith Ward was born Dothan, Ala. on March 17, 1917, to the parentage of the late Mr. Will Carter and the late Mrs. Bessie Dukes Carter.

She leaves to cherish her memories: her daughter and son-in-law, Mrs. Louise and Elder Osby Mosley; a son, Mr. Paul 'Sundown' Smith; three sisters, Ms. Mamie Nelson, Ms. Mittie Richardson and Ms. Ida Norman; 14 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and a great, great-grandchild and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends also survive.

Barnum Funeral Home will be in charge of these arrangements.

Joseph Dismuke

MONTEZUMA - Funeral services for Joseph Dismuke, affectionately called 'Bup, ' of Smithville, who passed on Tuesday, May 2, 2006, in the Flint River Community Hospital will at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, May 6, from the Jerusalem Grove Baptist Church. The Rev. Dr. Timothy French will officiate and burial will follow in the church cemetery. There will be a viewing of the body one hour prior to services at the church.

Mr. Joseph Dismuke was born in Sumter County on July 15, 1917, to the parentage of the late Mr. Roy Dismuke and the late Mrs. Mary Lizzie Smith Dismuke.

He leaves to cherish his memories: a son, Mr. Donald Dismuke, three sisters, Ms. Carrie Jackson, Ms. Rutha B. Sutton and Mrs. Alice (Roosevelt) Kinder; a brother, Mr. Oliver (Beatrice) Dismuke; eight grandchildren, Shalinda, Shameka, Jeff, James, Jr., James, Greg and two devoted granddaughters, Bridget and Faye; 12 great-grandchildren; 11 great, great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends also survive.

Amzie DeVaughn Seals

TIFTON - Amzie DeVaughn Seals, 95, of Tifton, died Tuesday, May 2, 2006, at Beverly Health Care Nursing Home in Tifton. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today in the Memorial Chapel of First Baptist Church, Tifton with Dr. W. Wayne Roe and Dr. W. Ches Smith III, officiating. iIntermentwill follow at 3:30 p.m. in the Felton Cemetery, Montezuma, Macon County.

Born Feb. 16, 1911, in Blakely, Mrs. Seals was the daughter of Jesse Benton Jones and Nannie Lou Davis Jones. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Carl Linton DeVaughn Jr. of Montezuma, to whom she was married from 1930-1947. In 1949, Mrs. Seals married John Emory Seals Sr. of Macon who preceded her in death in 1995.

In addition, Mrs. Seals was preceded in death by two sons, Carl Linton DeVaughn III of Augusta and Charles Harrell Seals of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. and a grandson, John L. Collins of Oakland, Calif. Mrs. Seals had lived in Tifton for 15 years. She resided in Montezuma from 1930-1955; in Macon from 1955-1975 and Montezuma from 1975-1991.

While a senior in high school, Mrs. Seals was awarded a music scholarship to Bessie Tift College. While there, she won the State Music Award in voice and represented the State of Georgia in Boston. She also attended Juilliard in New York. Mrs. Seals was a member of the First Baptist Church, Tifton, and taught Sunday School and Bible Class in Montezuma and Macon. She was a member of the Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority, National P.E.O. - UDC and DAR.

Mrs. Seals is survived by: two sons and three daughters-in-law, Ben J. and Shirley DeVaughn of Tifton, John E. and Lea Seals of Oakland, Calif. and Joan Arnold DeVaughn of Augusta; nine grandchildren and 16 great, great-grandchildren. Memorials may be sent to the Georgia Baptist Children's Home or any charity of one's choice.

Carolyn Mathew Miller

McDONOUGH - Funeral services for Carolyn Mathews Miller of McDonough will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 18 at Riverside cemetery in Macon. The Rev. J. Truett Gannon will officiate. She died on Monday, May 15, 2006. at Henry Medical Center. She was 81.

Mrs. Miller was born in Macon in 1924, and was the daughter of the late Thornton L. Mathews of Dawson and the late Louise Daughtry of Unadilla. Her husband of 59 years died in 2005.

She is survived by her three children, Boyce E. "Stick" Miller III and Elise of Americus, Matt and Sarah Miller of Avondale Estates and Carolyn Miller of Stockbridge, as well as five grandchildren.

Haisten's Funeral Home in McDonough is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the American Lung Association, The Georgia Southwestern Foundation or a charity of one's choice.

Mattie R. Daniel

AMERICUS - Funeral services for Mattie R. Daniel of 110 Melody Lane, who died Tuesday, will be announced by Barnum Funeral Home.

Jeffrey Alan Pruim

AMERICUS - Mr. Jeffrey Alan Pruim, age 31, died Saturday morning, May 20, 2006, at his residence, 1210 Lamar Road, Americus. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday morning, May 25, 2006, at First Baptist Church in Americus with the Rev. John Dent and Evangelist Jimmy Tuten officiating, with burial to follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, May 24, 2006 at Aldridge Funeral Services, and at other times, the family residence at 1210 Lamar Road, Americus. Asked to serve as active pallbearers are Glen Ganus, Hugh Combee, Joshua Pruim, Mike Carter, Robbie Lampp and Seth Cook.

Mr. Pruim was born March 20, 1975 in Tippecanoe County, Ind., the son of Donald Pruim and Shirley Speelman Pruim, whom survive him. He was a self-employed farmer and was of the Baptist faith.

Mr. Pruim is survived by his mother and father and his beloved fiancee, Ginny Cook of Americus; a brother and sister-in-law, Randy Pruim and Lynn of Lakeland, Fla., a nephew, Joshua Pruim and a niece, Allison Pruim of Lakeland, Fla.; his grandmother, Gertrude Pruim of Lombard, Ill. also survives. Also surviving is a number of aunts, uncles and cousins.

Rachel H. Turner Chrisman

WARRENSBURG, Mo. - Rachel H. Turner, age 94, of Warrensburg, Mo., died Thursday, May 18, 2006, in Warrensburg.

Born in Acworth, she was the daughter of the late Charlie R. Hardy and Martha Elizabeth McCoy Hardy. She was a homemaker, a member of the Church of Christ and the Royal Neighbors.

Survivors are her daughters, Janie Hall of Americus and Barbara Compton (Bob) of Warrensburg, Mo.; her sons, Roy M. Turner (Jean) of Warrensburg, Mo. and Harold Turner (Ruby) of Waverly; step-daughter, Jane Roach (Bob) of Boonville, Mo.; step-son, Riley Chrisman (Barbara) of Spearfish, S.D.; sister, Jessie A. Martin of Dawson; brothers, James M. Hardy of Haines City, Fla. and Collye Hardy (Deloris) of Lakeland, Fla.; 14 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and two great-great-granchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Thomas Roy Turner and Adam Chrisman. Her sister, Alleatha Everett and her brother, Eugene Hardy, also preceded her in death.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Americus.

The family will greet friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home in Vienna, or may be contacted at the residence of Richard Hall, 235 Megan Road, Vienna.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Gideon's International, c/o J.O. Cross Jr., 780 Brown's Chapel Road, Unadilla, GA 31091.

Debra Ellen Daniel

ANDERSONVILLE - Mrs. Debra Ellen Daniel, 50, of 405 Pennington Road, died Monday, May 15, 2006, at her residence from a brief battle with cancer. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 20, 2006, at the chapel of Aldridge Funeral Services. The Rev. Raymond Smith and the Rev. Wendy Joyner will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service time. Friends and family are welcome at the family residence, 405 Pennington Road, following the service.

Mrs. Daniel was born August 15, 1955, in Jefferson City, Mo., daughter of the late Jim Loyd and Barbara Loyd. She resided in Missouri, Virginia and Iowa, where she graduated from Prairie High School and attended Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She attended Mt. Carmel Baptist Church and for the last 10 months was employed by Golden Peanut Company in Dawson. She worked for Georgia Cold Storage Americus Base for 14 years.

Survivors include her husband of 11 years, Eulan Gregory Daniel of Andersonville; her mother, Barbara Loyd of Cadiz, Ky.; grandfather, Dillman Putz of Cape Girardeau, Mo.; a son and daughter-in-law, Glen D. McPhail and Angila of Mt. Home, Idaho; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Jeff and Pam Loyd of Burleson, Texas, and Chris Loyd of Nashville, Tenn.; her mother-in-law, Glendora Daniel of Andersonville; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Reggie and Phyllis Daniel of Americus; two grandchildren, Troy Daniel McPhail and Tayler Alexandria McPhail, both of Mt. Home, Idaho; and a number of aunts and uncles. She was preceded in death by her father, Jim Loyd; paternal grandparents, Dan and Gertrude Loyd and her maternal grandmother, Viola Putz.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Americus and Sumter County, P.O. Box 1434, Americus, GA, 31709.

James B. Gosa

AMERICUS - Mr. James B. Gosa, 89, passed away late Wednesday evening, May 17, 2006, at his residence. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 20, in First Baptist Church of Americus with the Rev. Bob Whitmire officiating. iIntermentwill follow in Smithville Cemetery. Members of the Philathea and Mens' Sunday School classes of First Baptist Church are requested to serve as honorary pallbearers.

Born Oct. 22, 1916, in Smithville, Mr. Gosa was a son of the late William Gosa and Nettie Forrest Ivey Gosa. His wife, Louise Young Gosa, preceded him in death on May 17, 2005, exactly one year prior to his death.

Mr. Gosa served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He retired after teaching for 30 years at South Georgia Technical and Vocational School, and was an active member of First Baptist Church of Americus as long as his health permitted.

The family will receive friends at Hancock Funeral Home from 6-8 p.m. Friday, May 19. At other times, friends may call at Mr. Gosa's residence, 1326 S. Lee St.

Memorial contributions may be made to Gideon's International, Americus Camp, P.O. Box 722, Americus, GA 31709.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Barbara Gosa of Americus; and one grandson, Shane Gosa of Americus.

Annie Eliza Millbrooks

AMERICUS - Ms. Annie Eliza Millbrooks, 56, of 130 Lonnie Lane Apt. 37, formally of 110 Appleblossom Lane, died Saturday, May 13, 2006, at the Sumter Regional Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 20, 2006, from the Chapel of West's Mortuary with Pastor George Monts officiating. Her burial will follow in the Eastview Cemetery.

Eliza, as she was affectionately known, was born in Americus on March 21, 1950 to the parentage of the late Roosevelt and Mattie Dowdell Millbrooks. She received her education in the public schools of Sumter County, Georgia.

In addition to her parents, she was proceeded in death by her brothers, Luther Bess, Emory Bess, and Roosevelt Millbrooks and a devoted soul-mate, O.C. Woods.

Fond memories will live on in the lives of her children, Carol Monts, Bobby Millbrooks (Debretta), and Micheal Monts; grandchildren, Micheal Monts. Jr., Jasmine Dean, De'Undra Blakely, De'Erica Blakely, Logan Tookes (friend), Charles Tookes (friend), Ann Dean (Lil' Dean), Nina McCray, and Morris McCray; a brother, Nathaniel Millbrooks (Eleanor); a son-n-law, Emory Blakely; a daughter-n-law, Gwendolyn Dean; an aunt, Mrs. Viola Williams; an uncle, Mr. Curtis Jackson; a sister-n-law, Mrs. Hattie Bess; step-children, Annie Ruth Tookes (friend), Carolyn Davis, Sir Edward Woods, and Albert Boone; a Godmother, Mrs. Mae Ola Tullis - Lewis (Charles); devoted neighbors, Mr. and Mrs. George and Doris Briggs and Mr. Charles Daniels, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Mattie Ruth Pace Daniel

AMERICUS - Funeral arrangements for Mrs. Mattie Ruth Pace Daniel, of 112 Melody Lane, who passed on Tuesday, May 16, 2006, in Magnolia Manor Nursing Center, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 20, 2006, at Mt. Olive Baptist Church. The Rev. Dr. H.C. Wilson will officiate, and burial will follow in Staley Memorial Gardens. The remains will be available for viewing at the church one hour prior to the services.

Mrs. Mattie Ruth Pace Daniel was born in Sumter County Oct. 21, 1920, to the parentage of the late Mr. Frank Pace and the late Mrs. Lula Griffin Pace.

She leaves to cherish her memories her sister, Mrs. Osceola Jordan; four grandchildren, Ms. Delores Brown, Mr. Rick (Carolyn) Hamilton, Mr. Curtis Hamilton and Ms. Sarah Slappey; 14 great-grandchildren; 23 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends also survive.

John Lee Ross

PLAINS - Mr. John Lee Ross, 77, of 335 King Drive died Friday, May 12, 2006, at the Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 20, 2006, from the Mt. Zion Webster Baptist Church of Webster County with Pastor G. W. Nealy, officiating. His burial will follow in the Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery.

John Lee Ross was born in Sumter County on April 5, 1929, to the late Clarence Ross and Rosa Brown. He retired from the Experiment Station in Plains after 34 years of dedicated service.

He leaves to cherish his memory a loving and devoted wife of 12 years, Mrs. Annie White Ross of Plains; his mother, Mrs. Rosa Brown of Plains; a devoted daughter, Miss Lawanna Ross of Americus; eight daughters, Miss Virginia Durham, Ms. Virginia Wallace, Miss Selena Glover and Ms. Doris Jackson (Pete) all of Plains, Ms. Dorothy Floyd (Mikki), Miss Loretta Kitchen both of Americus, Miss Barbara Best (Antonio) of South Carolina; five sons, Mr. Cedrick Ross, Mr. Clemons Glover, Mr. MacArthur Jackson (Maxine) all of Plains, Mr. Clyde Hollis, Jr. of Morgan and Mr. Tony Pope (Yvonne) of Jonesboro; a brother, Mr. Oscar Daniel of Plains; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Addie Robinson (Roylee) and Mrs. Lillie Heights (James) all of Americus; one brother-in-law; Mr. Robert Lee White of Cedartown and two devoted grandchildren, Master Jarvis Hollis and Miss Terian McCoy, both of Plains. He is also survived by a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, other family members and friends.

Annie Ruth Wafford

AMERICUS - Funeral services for Min. Annie Ruth Wafford of Quincy Drive, Americus, were held Saturday, June 10, 2006, at the Inspirational Church by Faith with Min. Linda Mathis officiating. Burial followed at Eastview Cemetery.

Mrs. Annie Ruth Wafford was born in Sumter County Georgia on Dec. 2, 1944, to the late Johnnie B. Robinson and the late Annie Lee King. She received her early education in the public schools of Leslie Georgia and attended high school at A.S. Staley in Americus.

She was a member of the Inspirational Church by Faith under the leadership of Bishop John T. Taylor. She later moved her membership to the Power of Faith Ministry under the leadership of Pastor Linda Mathis. She served her church faithfully as an Evangelist and Mother of the Church until her health failed. She was united in holy matrimony to the late Mr. Eddie B. Wafford, Sr. and to this union was born five children.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Ms. Alma Jackson, and two brothers, Johnny B. Robinson and Henry King.

She leaves to cherish her memory five sons, Eddie Wafford (Tonya Wafford) Willie Wafford (Mesha Love), Anthony Wafford and Derrick Wafford (Brenda Wafford), all of Americus, and Eric Wafford (Virginia Wafford) of Albany, one sister, Ms. Julie May Key of Americus and a loving and devoted cousin, Mrs. Mary Garry (Andrew) of Americus. Thirteen grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends also survive.
