Maurine Yearwood Wilcox
MACON - Maurine Yearwood 'Gaga' Wilcox, 92, departed for her eternal glory in Heaven June 8, 2006. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, June 12, in the Chapel of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Rivoli Drive, Macon. A visitation will be held from 7 - 9 p.m. tonight at Hart's Mortuary celebrating our mother's great, long life with friends and family.
Mrs. Wilcox, born in Sumter County Oct. 16, 1913, the daughter of the late Claude Henry Yearwood and Margaret Batts Worthy Yearwood, lived in Monroe County. She was the devoted wife of the late Howard Albert Wilcox Sr., born Oct. 16, 1915, Presque Isle, Maine, who preceded her trip to Heaven June 2, 1947.
Mrs. Wilcox was the oldest member of Mt. Zion where she served faithfully for over 50 years as teacher, mission leader and extraordinary Christian friend to many, many people. She was known for her generosity as she shared her many talents as seamstress, cook and gardener. Her curious mind, quick wit and storytelling ability had a positive influence on everyone that came in contact with her.
Survivors include: her son, Howard Albert (Alecia) Wilcox Jr.; daughter, Renee W. Bennett both of Macon; granddaughter, Rachel B. (Jay) Stancil; grandsons, Howard Albert (Virginia) Wilcox III, Jason Paul (Amanda) Wilcox, Victor L. (Rosemary) Bennett, Jeffrey Crumbley and nine great-grandchildren.

Janie Mae Butler
AMERICUS - Funeral services for Ms. Janie Mae Battle of 701 Davenport St., Americus, who passed on Wednesday, June 7, 2006 will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, June 10, 2006, from the Inspirational Church By Faith. Bishop John T. Taylor will officiate and burial will follow in the Eastview Cemetery. The remains will lie at in repose at the church one hour prior to the services.
Ms. Janie Mae Battle was born in Dade County, Fla. on June 27, 1940 to the parentage of the late Mr. Elmore James Wallace and the late Mrs. Annie Mae Wallace.
She leaves to cherish her memory four children, Mr. David (Nancy) Green, Ms. Amla Wallace and friend Charles, Mr. Timothy Wallace and Ms. Ella Simmons; one brother, Mr. Ellis Wallace; a devoted friend, Mr. Charles Seay; seven granddaughters, La'Tonya, Tierra, Angelique, Iesha, Ellique, Ella and Jasmine; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

COBB - Funeral services for Mr. Sam Cade Jr. of Pryor Cobb Road, Cobb, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 10, 2006, from the New Zion Baptist Church. The Rev. Jesse Watts will officiate and burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Mr. Sam Cade Jr. was born in Sumter County on Oct. 12, 1943 to the parentage of the late Mr. Sam Cade and the late Mrs. Edna Putman Pierce.
He leaves to mourn his passing a brother, Mr. Silas (Mary) Pierce; a brother-in-law, Mr. J. C. Harderman; two devoted nieces, Ms. Julia Pierce and Mrs. Doris Pierce-Hardy; a devoted nephew, Mr. Paul Pierce Jr.; and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends also survive.

Anthony Paul Wodzinski
McRAE — Anthony Paul Wodzinski, age 15, of Helena, died Saturday, June 10, 2006.
Services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, June 14, 2006, in Southside Baptist Church in McRae, with burial in Shelton Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery.
He was a student at Telfair County High School and a member of Southside Baptist Church.
Survivors: Natalie and Terry Camp of Helena, Stacy and Stanley Wodzinski Jr. of Americus; three sisters, Destiny Kristen Wodzinski of Helena, Rebkah Kay Bowen of Americus, Cloe Dean Wood of Americus; grandparents, Helen and Claude Rivers of Jacksonville, Barbara and Fred Usry of Ellaville, Janie and Stanley Wodzinski Sr. of Ellaville; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and friends.

Ted Baldwin
AMERICUS — Mr. Ted Baldwin, age 71, died at his residence shortly after noontime on Sunday, June 11, 2006. Graveside services will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, June 14, in Oak Grove cemetery with the Rev. Bob Whitmire officiating. Members of the Americus Kiwanis Club are requested to serve as honorary pallbearers.
Born May 14, 1935, in Americus, Mr. Baldwin was a son of the late William Theodore Baldwin Sr. and Verna Dean Adkins Baldwin. He was a graduate of Americus High School and obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in 1958 from Troy State University where he also earned two letters in football. He served in the U.S. Marine Corp from 1958 until 1962 and attained the rank of Captain.
Mr. Baldwin was president and co-owner of The Baldwin Agency, Inc. He was president of the Americus Country Club, the Americus Jaycees, the Americus Kiwanis Club, and he also served as chairman of the Americus Sumter Payroll Development Authority where he was instrumental in passage of the first 1% SPLOST for economic development. He served as a board member of the Americus-Sumter County Chamber of Commerce and was a deacon at First Baptist Church of Americus.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Hancock Funeral Home. At other times, friends may call at 116 Glenwood Road.

Valley Steve Pettis
Valley Steve Pettis, 62, of Smithville died June 11, 2006, at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital following an illness.
The graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 14, 2006 at Smithville City Cemetery. Rev. Wayne Poole will officiate.
Mr. Pettis was a native of Smithville and was a 1962 graduate of Leesburg High School. He was of the Baptist faith. He was a past employee of Coats And Clark, Great Southern Paper Company for more than 20 years and Cook Specialties of Americus. His hobbies were fishing and spending time with family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Melrose and Cecil L. Pettis Sr. and a sister, Marion Pettis.
He is survived by his two brothers, S. Cobb Pettis and Larry Pettis, both of Smithville.

Ann Teresa Newkirk
AMERICUS — Mrs. Ann Teresa Newkirk, age 87, of 112 Shirley Road, Americus, died Thursday afternoon, June 15, 2006, at Magnolia Manor Nursing Center. The remains have been cremated and a Memorial Service will be held at a later date in Michigan. The family will be receiving friends at the family residence, 112 Shirley Road in Americus.
Mrs. Newkirk, a native of Wayne County, Detroit, Mich., was born the daughter of the late John Schroeder and Eva Winter Schroeder on April 27, 1919. She was retired from Park David and Company as a Research Technician and was a member of Saint Mary’s Catholic Church in Americus.
Mrs. Newkirk is survived by a son, Allan Patrick Newkirk of Americus; two sisters, Rosemary Onacki of Dearborn, Mich. and Trudy Shemki of Grose Point, Mich. Also surviving is three grandchildren and one great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Newkirk was preceded in death by a son, David Glenn Newkirk.

Helen Hunnicutt Davis
AMERICUS — Mrs. Helen Hunnicutt Davis, age 88, died on Thursday, June 1, 2006, at Sumter Regional Hospital. She was born Jan. 8, 1918, in Macon, and was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Kenneth Addison Davis, and by her daughter, Judy Davidson.
Helen is survived by her daughters, Ginny Carter and her husband, Thomas, of Callawassie Island, S.C., and Carol Schriver and her husband Byron of Little Rock, Ark.; seven grandchildren, Kathryn and Ken Davidson, Brian Carter and Amy Carter Hawkins, Lee and Robert Schriver, and Allyn Schriver Elleman; and five great-grandchildren.
She was a faithful member of Central Baptist Church where she taught the three-year-old Sunday School class for many years. She was a member of the Americus Board of Education for 16 1/2 years, and also served on the Georgia State School Board Association.
In addition to her family and friends, Helen’s interests included the Junior League, bridge, and gardening. She was an exceptional seamstress, to which her family would readily attest, and a very special place in her heart was reserved for her “little dog” Scout.
Helen will be forever remembered as the ultimate caregiver and loving wife, mother and grandmother.
Visitation with the family will be held from noon until 1 p.m. in the vestibule of Central Baptist Church on Sunday, June 4. A graveside service will follow at 2 p.m. in Sunset Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. Hugh DeLoach officiating.

Arthur T. Miller
ELLAVILLE — Mr. Arthur T. Miller, age 78, of 134 Oglethorpe St., Ellaville, died Friday, June 2, 2006 at Magnolia Manor Nursing Center, Americus. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today at Ellaville Baptist Church, with burial to follow in the Ellaville cemetery with full Masonic Rites. The Rev. John Carr, the Rev. Brooks Partain and the Rev. Ben Foxworth will officiate.
Mr. Miller was born Jan. 28, 1928 in Grady County, the son of Andrew Jackson Miller Jr. and Linnie Pearl Newberry Miller. He was retired as superintendent of the Schley County School System and had served in the U.S. Marines during World War II. Mr. Miller was a member of the American Legion and the Masonic Lodge. He was a very active member of Ellaville Baptist Church where, through the years, he served as a deacon, chairman of the deacons, Sunday School teacher, choir member, church trustee, lay speaker, parliamentarian, Brotherhood officer, and on many different committees. Mr. Miller was also a member of Ellaville Baptist Church’s gospel singing group, “The Missionairers.” He loved serving his Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, through service to his church.
Mr. Miller was preceded in death by his wife, Bettye Miller. He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Roger Messer of Americus; two sons and daughters-in-law, Joey and Mechelle Miller of Oglethorpe, Tommy and Georgia Miller of Enigma; one brother and sister-in-law, Ralph and Katherine Miller of Whigham; and five sisters and three brothers-in-law, Nathalyn and Sidney Freeman of Sparta, Carolyn and Roy McCook of Laurinburg, N.C., Betty and John Gurley of Chula, Jeanette Roberts of Whigham and Annelle Byars of Gulf Breeze, Fla. Mr. Miller is also survived by four grandchildren, Bart Miller, Ryan Miller, Amy Messer, Brad Messer; and one great-grandchild, Marcus Miller; and several nieces and nephews.
Active pallbearers will include Ben Dupree, Lamar Jordan, Meredith Walker, Joe Tidd, Wilbur Justice, and Emory Hill. Honorary pallbearers will include Carvis Passmore, Bill Perry, Ray Flanders, Vernon Dillard, the Missionaires, the Masons, and American Legion Post 191.

Sherry Lee Wiggins Minick
AMERICUS — Sherry Lee Wiggins Minick, age 55, died early Saturday morning, June 3, 2006, in the Flint River Hospital. Graveside services will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Monday, June 5, in the Liberty Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Highway 19, South.
A native of Sumter County, Mrs. Minick was born April 11, 1951, a daughter of Mrs. Florence Francine Reid Wiggins of Smithville who survives, and the late Elder Leo Wiggins. She attended Liberty Primitive Baptist Church all of her life and worked as a retail sales clerk.

William Thomas Stewart
ELLAVILLE — Mr. William Thomas Stewart, age 62, of 5920 Village Green Drive, Macon, died Tuesday morning, May 30, 2006 at his residence. Funeral services were held graveside at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 3, 2006 in the Ellaville Cemetery. The Rev. Steven Hill officiated.
Mr. Stewart was born Aug. 24, 1943 in Sumter County and was the son of James Eli Stewart and Annie Louise Wilkes Stewart. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and was awarded the Purple Heart and the Army Commendation Medal. Mr. Stewart was a home builder and was a member of the American Legion Post 191, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Kandice Stewart of Plains; two brothers, James E. Stewart of Dallas, Texas and Ben Stewart of St. Augustine, Fla.; one sister, Shirley Fountain of Macon; his stepmother, Doris Stewart of Wrens and two grandchildren, Tommy Joseph Stewart and Mckinsey Virginia Stewart, both of Plains. In addition to his parents, Mr. Stewart was preceded in death by one son, Johnny Lee Stewart, and one daughter, Tammy Lynn Stewart.

Mary Elizabeth Hollis Dixon
BRUNSWICK — Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Hollis Dixon of 100 Pete Lane, Brunswick, formerly of Americus, will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, June 3, 2006, from the Big Bethel Baptist Church. The Rev. Christopher O’Bryant will officiate and burial will follow in the Eastview Cemetery. The remains will lie in repose at the church from noon until the funeral hour.
Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Hollis Dixon, “Mott, ” as she was affectionately called, was born in Sumter County on July 27, 1942 to the parentage of the late Mr. Walter Hollis and the late Mrs. Minnie Mosley Hollis.
Her legacy will always be remembered by her husband of 26 years, Mr. Willie L. Dixon; her children, Mrs. Valencia (Donnell) Walker, Ms. Ameila J. Washington, Mrs. Jacqueline (Clayton) Barnes, Mr. James E. Johnson Jr., Mrs. Kimberly (Carl) Trottie and Ms. Nicholle Dixon Prior; her brother and sisters, Mr. James (Mary) Hollis, Ms. Virginia H. Reddick, Mrs. Minnie (Gene) Engram and Mrs. Edith Ann Green; 16 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends also survive.

Evelyn Fiveash
AMERICUS — Evelyn Fiveash, 91, of Jacksonville, Fla., died Thursday, June 1, 2006 at the Sumter Regional Hospital, after a brief illness. She was born in Dupont on Aug. 18, 1914 to the late George Alexander Sr. and Leila Hughes Fiveash and lived in Clinch and Lowndes counties until moving to Jacksonville, Fla. in 1940. Fiveash was a retired bank bookkeeper and a member of the West Jacksonville Primitive Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, James M. and Kathy Fiveash of Jacksonville, Fla., daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Thad Wilkinson of Desoto, four grandchildren, Tommy Wilkinson, Thad Wilkinson III, Molly Sellars and Alise Reynolds and five great-grandchildren; one sister, Vera Tippins of Valdosta.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 3, 2006 at Cat Creek Cemetery, with the Elder Gordon Smith.
