Slaton Holley
PLAINS — Funeral services for Mr. Slaton Holley, 78, of Plains will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 3, 2006 at St. Mark AME Church with Rev. George F. Monts officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. Mr. Holley died on Wednesday, May 24, 2006 at the Lillian Carter Nursing Center.
Mr. Holley was born in Webster County to the late Rev. John Henry Holley and the late Mary Lee Kleckley Holley. At an early age he joined the Saint Mark A.M.E. Church in Plains. He received his education in the public schools of Webster County. He was a self-employed auto mechanic. In May of 1954, he was united in holy matrimony to Ms. Elsie Lee Stewart and to this union was born three daughters and one son. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Elsie Lee Stewart Holley, one daughter, Ms. Jeanette Holley, and two brothers, Mr. John Henry Holley, Jr. and Mr. Marvin C. Holley.
He leaves to cherish his memory his children, Mrs. Linda (Joseph) Mitchell of Albany; Mrs. Mary (Jerome) Lewis and Starling Holley, both of Smithville; one step-daughter, Ms. Clara Reed of Rochester, N.Y.; two brothers, Mr. John Amos Holley and Mr. Adam Holley both of Plains; one brother-in-law, Mr. Joseph Stewart of Americus; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Queen Holley of Columbus and one son-in-law, Mr. Howard Terry of Americus; seven grandchildren, Pamela Lockett, Tonya Mitchell, Diandra Mitchell and Cassandra Mitchell all of Albany, Latoya Terry, Concetta Terry, Linda Baker all of Americus, and Micheal Terry of Norfork, Va.; five great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and devoted friends, Mr. Rudie Banks, Mrs. Drucilla Owens and Ms. Faye Bivins. A host of other relatives and friends also survive.
Billy Ray Smith
DOERUN — Billy Ray Smith, 63, of 130 Ed Lee Road, Doerun, died Thursday, June 1, 2006, at his residence.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 5, 2006 at Cobb Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Ronald Barrett officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Casketbearers will be Billy Twyman, Johnny Hudson, John Hudson, Pat Twyman, Rick Melton and Patrick Melton.
Born April 22, 1943 in Faukville, Ala., Smith was the son of the late Ollie Mae McDonald Smith and the late Herman Smith.
He was a tractor driver for the Martin County, Fla. Road Department. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors are his spouse Sharon Hudson Smith of Doerun; a son, James Ray Smith of Leslie and wife Jeanie; a daughter, Tonya Twyman of Thomasville; a brother, Eulle Smith of Artemasky, Ky.; three sisters, Wilma Talman of Addison, Ala., Helen Roberts of Summerville, Ala., and Joyce Beasley of Addison, Ala.; and four grandchildren, Billy Twyman, Jesse Twyman, Anne Elizabeth Smith and Shelby Smith.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at Cobb Funeral Chapel.
Sherry Jackson
ALBANY — Sherry Jackson of 1925 Stuart Ave. in Albany, died Monday, May 29, 2006 at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, after a lengthy battle with cancer. She was 50.
The funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, June 2, at First Assembly of God, 1211 Stuart Ave. in Albany. The Revs. Craig Howell and Bobby Jackson will officiate. iIntermentwill be at the Sunset Memorial Gardens cemetery in Americus.
A native of Maple Rapids, Mich., Sherry had lived most of her life in the Albany area. She had been previously employed for seven years with Coats and Clark, and was the general manager of the radio station, WANL AM 1250, from 1990-2003. She was a past member of the Board of Directors for the Dougherty-Lee Unit of the American Cancer Society, and with her husband, served as a past coordinator of the Lee County Evening of Music, and then the Dougherty County Evening of Music, for the American Cancer Society. Sherry was a member of First Assembly of God in Albany, where she had served in numerous capacities over the years, including Sunday School teacher, Youth Leader, Children’s Church leader, and with the Sanctuary Choir and Worship Team.
Survivors include her husband, the Rev. Bobby Jackson; a son, Bobby Cook and his wife Amanda of Albany; her mother and step-father, Patsy and Richard McAfee of Americus; her father, Tarvey F. Roberts Sr. of Albany; sisters, Ginger Everett of Albany, Donna Kannon and her husband Randy of Jesup, Julie Breen of Little Rock, Ark.; a brother, Tarvey Roberts Jr. of Albany; step-sisters, Tammye Hewett and her husband Brett of Americus and Sharon Colver and her husband Noel of Americus; several nieces, nephews, step-nieces and step-nephews, and two grand-nieces. Sherry was preceded in death by a sister, Cathy Roberts Potter of Albany in 1980, and a niece, Mandy Michelle Roberts of Easley, S.C., in 2004.

Sherry Lee Wiggins Minick
AMERICUS — Mrs. Sherry Lee Wiggins Minick, age 55, died early Saturday morning, June 3, 2006, in the Flint River Hospital. Graveside services were conducted at 10 a.m. Monday, June 5, in the Liberty Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Highway 19, South.
A native of Sumter County, Mrs. Minick was born April 11, 1951, a daughter of Mrs. Florence Francine Reid Wiggins of Smithville, who survives, and the late Leo Wiggins. She attended Liberty Primitive Baptist Church all of her life and worked as a retail sales clerk.

One sister, Gloria Jean Bryant, preceded her in death.

Manson S. “Bud” McMickle
AMERICUS — Mr. Manson S. McMickle, 65, of Cordele died on Sunday Morning June 4, 2006 at Magnolia Manor Nursing Center. Mr. McMickle was born in Marion County, the son of the late Manson S. and Mamie Jewell McMickle. He was a member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Draneville and a retired salesman in the aerospace industry.
Mr. McMickle, a 1958 graduate of Marion County High School in Buena Vista, received a B.B.A. degree from The University of Georgia, where he was a member of the Society for Advancement of Management, the National Management Association, the American Marketing Association and served as Treasurer of Alpha Kappa Psi fraternity. Mr. McMickle spent most of his career in aerospace sales after having been associated with Lockheed-Georgia in Marietta and was a member of The National Rifleman’s Association.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. today, June 6, 2006, from the graveside at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church Cemetery, in Draneville with Rev Ron Perry officiating. The Family will receive friends on Monday from 6-8 p.m. at Greg Hancock Funeral Chapel.
Mr. McMickle is survived by one daughter, Kimberly Bond McMickle of Atlanta; one son, Charles Bradford McMickle of Marietta; three sisters, Maxine Ingram of North Carolina, Joyce Curlee of Cordele, and Janice Jacquin of Alpharetta and a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. McMickle was preceded in death by one sister, Dolly Jean Ingram, and one brother, Curtis Lamar McMickle.

ALBANY — Mr. Fred Franklin Parks, 82, of Americus passed away Sunday, June 4, 2006 at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, June 7, in the chapel of Watson-Mathews Funeral Home, Montezuma. The Rev. Ken Bush and the Rev. Robert Whitmire will officiate. iIntermentwill follow in Bertha Dozier Memorial Park cemetery in Montezuma.

Mr. Parks was born on April 6, 1924 in Taylor County to the late Eugene Parks and Maggie May McDaniel Parks. He was a retired self-employed farm equipment repairman. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Americus, former deacon at Montezuma Baptist Church and served in the Georgia National Guard. He had lived in Americus for the past 18 years. Mr. Parks was a loving father and husband. He was preceded in death by one son, Roger Parks.
Survivors include his wife, Minnie Lee Lamberth Parks of Americus; a daughter and son-in-law, Judy P. and Robert Legg of Andersonville and one granddaughter, April Legg.

Nettie Sullivan
AMERICUS — Mrs. Nettie Sullivan, age 79, of Ellaville, passed away very early Monday morning, June 5, 2006 in Phoebe-Putney Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be be conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 7, in the LaCrosse Road Baptist Church on State Road 228, Schley County, with the Rev. Samuel West officiating. iIntermentwill follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Grandsons, including Kenneth Sullivan, Billy Joe Bailey, Jr., Gary Bailey, Jeffrey Bailey, Chris Bailey, and Kevin Bailey, will serve as active pallbearers. Billy Joe Bailey and Jack Bailey will be honorary pallbearers.
Born May 29, 1927, in Plains, Mrs. Sullivan was a daughter of the late Lennie E. and Georgia Childree Crook. She was a homemaker and a member of the Senior Citizens of Schley County. She was an active member of the LaCrosse Road Baptist Church and the Sunday School of the church.

AMERICUS - Funeral services for Miss Shonterra Symone Cladd, 12 years old, of 106 Oakridge Dr., Americus, who passed on June 17, 2006 at the Sumter Regional Hospital, are scheduled for 11 a.m., Thursday, June 22, 2006, from the Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church, Plains. Elder Johnny R. Lundy is to officiate with burial in the church cemetery. She will lie in repose at the church from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Public viewing will be from noon until 8 p.m. today at Barnum Funeral Home.
Shonterra was born Aug. 17, 1993, to the parentage of Mr. Charles Cladd and Mrs. Mary Solomon Cladd. She was a student at A.S. Staley Middle School, where she was just promoted to the eighth grade.

Geraldine Wiggins Satterfield
AMERICUS - Ms. Geraldine Wiggins Satterfield, 75, of Americus died on Wednesday, June 21, 2006.
A native of Sumter County, Ms. Satterfield was born on August 17, 1930, a daughter of the late Oscovin Elton Wiggins and the late Inez Layfield Wiggins. She was a retired nurse, a member of Woodmen of the World and also a member of Faith Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday June 23, 2006 at Faith Baptist Church with Rev. Jeff Gossett and Rev Hershel Sizemore officiating. iIntermentwill follow at Liberty Primitive Baptist Church cemetery in Smithville.

Born May 1, 1922, to the late Garfield and Willie Mae Lanier Mathis in Sumter County, Mrs. Watts was a member of County Line Baptist Church. After 20 dedicated years of service, she retired from Citizens Bank of Americus as a Custodian.

James D. Chappell Jr.
AMERICUS - Mr. James D. Chappell Jr., 74, passed away on Friday afternoon, June 23, 2006, in Magnolia Manor Nursing Center. Graveside services will be conducted at 6 p.m. Monday, June 26, in Hebron Baptist Church cemetery with the Rev. Rodney Stamey officiating. The family will receive friends at the cemetery following the services.
Born June 21, 1932, in Americus, Mr. Chappell was a son of the late James Dodson Chappell Sr. and Mary Lillian Thomas Chappell. He was a computer instructor at the University of Maryland and a member of the Chevy Chase United Methodist Church in Chevy Chase, Md. He was a scout leader for many years and remained active with the scouts as long as his health permitted. He was veteran of the U.S. Army.

Calvin Wafford, Sr.
Funeral services for the late Mr. Calvin Wafford, Sr., 806-A Fulton St., Americus, who passed on June 19, 2006 at Columbus Medical Center are scheduled for Tuesday, June 27, 2006, at Friendship Baptist Church in Americus with Overseer Rosa Fowler officiating. Burial will follow at East View Cemetery.
Mr. Wafford was born August 29, 1965, in Americus to the late Mr. Tom Wafford, Jr. and the late Mrs. Lula Mae Smith Wafford. He was educated in the public schools of Sumter County and worked for over 20 years in the Sanitation Department of Americus City and later for Transit Waste Industries. He was married
for 17 years to the late Mrs. Debra Paul Wafford. He was a faithful member of the Americus Holiness Deliverance Church.
He is survived by three sons, Mr. Douglas Paul, Mr. Michael Paul and Mr. Calvin Wafford, Jr.; two daughters, Miss Angela Wafford and Miss Jessica Wafford; two sisters, Ms. Tina Wafford (Stan) and Ms. Carolyn Wafford (John); three brothers, Mr. Curtin Taylor, Mr. Tommie Lee Wafford and Mr. Bruce (Katie) Wafford; and a host of other relatives and friends, also survive.
