Rosie Mae Bess Cutts
SMITHVILLE - Mrs. Rosie Mae Bess Cutts, age 67, of 107 John St., Smithville, passed Friday, June 23, 2006, at Phoebe Putney Hospital in Albany. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m., Wednesday, June 28, 2006, at Green Grove Baptist Church, Rhode Street in Smithville. iIntermentwill follow in the church cemetery.
She was born Nov. 29, 1938 in Lee County to the late Henry Bess, Sr. and Odessa Sutton Bess. One brother preceded her in death, Henry Bess, Jr. Mrs.Cutts was a member of Green Grove Baptist Church Deaconess Board and Usher Board Ministry. After 25 years of service, she retired from Superior Surgical Manufacturing Company, Inc. of Leesburg as an Inspector in 1992. She also was also employed with the Lee County Board of Education.
Survivors are a beloved husband of 50 years, Douglas Cutts; six children, Gregory (Winnie) Cutts, Betty (Timothy) Yancey, Belinda (Ferlin) Tyson, Shirley Tatum, Anthony (Sharon) Cutts and Vincent (Fiance, Telisa Taylor); four siblings, Earnestine (Otto) Bennett, Doris Bess, Brenda Wade and Michael Jerome Bess; three aunts, Annie R. Bess, Carrie L. Bess and Lucille Lonzey; nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
A wake service will be held from 6-7 p.m. Tuesday, June 27, 2006, at Oglethorpe Funeral Chapel, Inc., 607 Kaigler St., Oglethorpe.
Joyce Wright Pattishall
AMERICUS - Mrs. Joyce Wright Pattishall, age 79, of Montezuma, passed away Saturday afternoon at Sumter Regional Hospital. Graveside funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. today in the Bertha Dozier Memorial Park cemetery in Montezuma. The Rev. David Chapman will officiate.
Family received friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday evening, June 26, at Watson-Mathews Funeral Home, Montezuma, and other times at the granddaughter's residence, 106 Springfield Ave., Americus.
She was born Aug. 6, 1926 in London, England to the late James Wright and Esther Mullings Wright. She was of the Baptist faith and retired owner of Pattishall Save Way in Montezuma. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Emmett Pattishall.
Survivors include her daughter, Carol Grant of Americus; two grandchildren, Lisa (Clinton) Cook of Leesburg and Misty (Brandon) Helms of Americus; one great-granddaughter, Christi Goldsberry of Americus; two sisters, Iris (Aubrey) Roadway of Norwich, England and Sybil Glaister of Brandon, England.

AMERICUS - Funeral services for Veteran Charles Washington, affectionately called 'Sonny-Boy, ' of 609 Lambert St., Americus, will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, June 28, 2006, from the Mt. Olive Baptist Church. The Rev. Dr. H.C. Wilson will officiate and burial will follow in the Andersonville National Cemetery. The remains will lie in repose at the church one hour before the services.
Veteran Charles Washington was born in Sumter County on March 15, 1938 to the parentage of the late Mr. Emmanuel King and the late Mrs. Marie Washington.
John White Dixon
AMERICUS — Mr. John White “Johnny” Dixon, 74, 1908 Rose Ave., died early Saturday morning, July 29. Funeral services will be conducted at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 1, in the chapel of Hancock Funeral Home with the Rev. James Purks officiating. Private interment will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery.
Born on June 10, 1932 in Miami, Fla., Mr. Dixon was a son of the late Olin Lamar Dixon Jr. and Virginia Davenport Dixon. He lived in Americus almost his entire life, leaving only briefly to serve his country as a member of the U.S. Navy. He was a member of Calvary Episcopal Church and a long-time employee of the Tog Shop.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m., Monday, July 31 at Hancock Funeral Home. At other times, friends may call at the residence of John and Melinda Dixon, 1009 Douglas Circle.
In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that memorials be made to the American Cancer Society, c/o Mrs. Ann Harris, 1801 Rose Ave., Americus, GA 31709.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Marilynn M. Dixon; a daughter and son-in-law, Laurie McLean and Tom of Hernando, Fla.; a son and daughter-in-law, John White Dixon Jr. and Melinda of Americus; a brother and sister-in-law, Olin Lamar Dixon III and Betty of Pensacola, Fla.; three grandchildren, Katie McLean and Allison McLean, both of Hernando, Fla., and Cathryn Dixon of Americus; and several nieces and nephews.

Maxie Wendell Johnson
VINCENT, Ala. — Maxie Wendell Johnson, 71, of Vincent, Ala., died July 27, 2006 at his residence, 65 Twin Isle N. Drive, Vincent, Ala.
Memorial services will be held at noon, Monday, July 3 at Trinity Episcopal Church in Alpine, Ala. Father Frank Young will officiate.
He was the son of the late Ralph Henley Johnson and the late Estelle Cole.
Born Jan. 9, 1935 in Doerun, Johnson was a sales manager with Engineered Components, Inc. A graduate of Albany High School and Southern PolyTech, he served in the United States Army. Mr. Johnson was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Alpine, Ala.
Survivors are his wife, Joan Thomas Johnson of Vincent, Ala.; one son, Michael Johnson (Veronica) of Leesburg; one stepson, James R. Wall (Loraine) of Helena, Ala.; a daughter, Tracy Johnson Israel (Charles) of Smithville; two sisters, Peggy Johnson Posnick (Sam) of Albany and Helen Johnson Patrick (Gibbs) of Omega; grandchildren, Hollis and Merritt Johnson, Trevor, Chance and Delanie Israel, and Jacia and Jared Wall. He is also survived by numerous family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Helen; his parents, Ralph and Estelle Johnson; his sister, Nellie Johnson, and brother, Herbert Lee Johnson.
Carol Lynn Ritchie
AMERICUS — Miss Carol Lynn Ritchie, 60, died late Monday evening, July 31, 2006, at Magnolia Manor Nursing Center in Americus. The remains have been cremated and a Holy Mass for Christian Burial will be held at noon Thursday, Aug. 3 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Americus with Father Clif Marquis S.T. officiating.
Miss Ritchie was a native of Pittsburg, Penn. and was born the daughter of the late Harry James Ritchie and her mother whom survives her, Mary R. King Ritchie of Americus. She was a graduate of Virginia Tech University with a doctorate degree in Education and was the Dean of Students at Georgia Southwestern State University since 1981 until her health began to decline. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
Miss. Ritchie is survived by several cousins and church family along with friends and special friend Mrs. Marguerite Weatherly of Americus. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society c/o Mrs. Ann Harris, 1801 Rose Ave., Americus, GA 31709.

SMITHVILLE — Funeral services for Ms. Ramona Renee’ Williams of 169 Muckaloochee Road, Smithville, who passed on Friday, July 28, 2006 at her home, will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 3, 2006, from the Green Grove Baptist Church. The Rev. Hosie Waters will officiate and burial will follow in the church cemetery. The remains will lie in repose at the church one hour prior to the services.
Ms. Ramona Renee’ Williams was born Sept. 13, 1972 in Americus to the parentage of Mr. Raymond Williams and Mrs. Hazel Humphries Williams.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by a brother, Mr. Joseph Williams; seven aunts, Ms. Lucy Stinson, Ms. Lelia (Hazel) Stinson, Ms. Deloris Blount, Ms. Alice Williams, Ms. Yinestra Williams, Ms. Tammye Searcy and Ms. Louise Sutton; five uncles, Mr. John Denson, Mr. George Williams, Mr. Charles Williams, Mr. Clarence Williams and Mr. Eugene Williams; two nephews, Jarvis and Jaelan Williams; her companion, Mr. Antonio Atwater; and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends also survive.

ALBANY — Mr. Carmel Von Blan, age 67, of 899 Douglas Circle, Americus, died Sunday afternoon, July 30, 2006, at Palmyra Park Medical Center in Albany. The remains have been cremated and a graveside memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2006, at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Americus, with the Rev. Keith Wisham officiating. The family will be receiving friends at the residence of Mike and Vonda Rushing, 140 South Forty, in Americus.
Mr. Blan, a native of DeQueen, Ark., was born the son of the late Oscar Carmel Blan and Ruby Mae Boatman Blan on Jan. 13, 1939. He was employed with International Minerals and Chemical Co. IMC, and a member of the Church of Christ. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Mr. Blan is survived by his wife, Linda Carol Arnold Blan of Americus; a daughter and son-in-law, Vonda Rushing and Mike of Americus; son and daughter-in-law, Garry Blan and Lori of Lawrenceville. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Whitney and Madison Blan of Lawrenceville, and Nikki Rushing Hicks of Warner Robins. Mr. Blan was preceded in death by a brother, Dean Blan, and a grandchild, Taylor Blan.

ADEL—Ronald Lee Johnson, 79, of Adel, passed away Sunday, July 9, 2006 at South Georgia Medical Center.
Mr. Johnson was born Sept. 26, 1926 to the late Frank and Fannie Mace Johnson. He served in the Navy and attended Living Way Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Joann Johnson of Adel; three daughters and sons-in-law, Angela and Billy Patterson of Tampa, Fla., Peggy and Norman Teebo of Sparta, Wis. and Betty and Murray Norton of Adel; four grandchildren, Jonathan Ellenburg of Wisconsin, Alicia Ellenburg of Tampa, Fla., Pricilla and Chad Sowell of Adel and Libby Norton of Adel; four great-grandchildren, Hunter Ellenburg, Gunner Ellenburg, Jacob Sowell, and Hiedi Sowell; one brother, J.C. Johnson of Indiana; three sisters, Evelyn Gray, Frankie Wallace, and Mary Lou Hickman, all of Tennessee.
As per Mr. Johnson’s request, he will be cremated. A memorial service will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to your favorite charity.

Robert Boyd Bridges
SUMMERVILLE, S.C. — Robert Boyd Bridges, 70, husband of Betty Crowe Bridges, of Summerville, S.C. died July 11, 2006, in a local hospital.
Funeral Services will be held Friday morning, July 14, 2006, at eleven o’clock at Bethany United Methodist Church in Summerville, S.C. Burial will follow at Summerville Cemetery. Friends may call this Thursday evening from six until eight o’clock at Parks Funeral Home.

Mr. Bridges, son of Robert Hugo Bridges and Isabelle Boyd Bridges, was born Jan. 16, 1936 in Charlotte, N.C. He was a graduate of Americus High School and the University of Georgia. He was an active member of Bethany United Methodist Church and taught Sunday School for the Searchers class. He was involved in Dixie Youth baseball at Parks Field for 18 years as commissioner and coach.
Mr. Bridges was a sportswriter for Anderson Independent and Greenville News. He was Sports Information Director for Charleston Southern University, and retired from Trident Technical College as Director of Continuing Education.
Survivors include his wife, Betty C. Bridges of Summerville; three sons, Alan Bridges and wife Lisa of Summerville, Greg Bridges and wife, Sally of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., and Brian Bridges of Summerville; four grandchildren Corley, Parker, Sawyer, and Britney Bridges; mother, Isabelle Boyd Bridges, and a sister, Vivian Milton, both of Americus.
Doris Kitchens Downen
AMERICUS — Mrs Doris Downen, age 70, of Americus died Tuesday, July 11, 2006, at her residence. A native of Sumter County, Mrs. Downen was born Jan. 11, 1936, a daughter of the late Marvin Kitchens and Mary Helen King Kitchens. She was a member of Faith Baptist Church.
Graveside funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 13, 2006 at 10 a.m. in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the home of Eva McNair, 1608 Crawford St.
Survivors include her husband, Rex Downen of Americus; two brothers, William Kitchens of Americus and Benny Kitchens of Cobb; two sisters, Eva McNair and Annie Laura Chavers both of Americus; eight grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. A son, Glenn Cromer preceded her in death Nov. 12, 1992. A sister, Sue Eberhart also preceded her in death.

Mrs. Haugabook was the daughter of the late Otis Cromer and Minnie Sullivan Cromer. She passed away on July 9, 2006.

Thaddis Sellers
AMERICUS — Thaddis “Dale” Sellers, 61, of Americus, passed away on Monday, July 10, 2006, after a long battle with cancer. Funeral services will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to Sumter Humane Society, 702 Magnolia St., Americus, GA 31719.
Mr. Sellers was retired from South Georgia Technical College. He received a master’s degree from Mississippi State University and had a love of flying and building airplanes.
Mr. Sellers was the son of Granville Sellers of Waynesboro, Miss. and Norma Martin of Laurel, Miss. He is survived by his wife, Jacklyn Sellers; three sons, Kelly, Corey and John; one daughter, Vickie Gibson; two step-daughters, Tesa Nut and Dawn Masker; one step-son, Chad Miller; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was the oldest of seven children, two brothers, Charlie Tompkins and Lynn Tompkins, and four sisters, Barbara Dean, Jean Brady, Ruth Bryant and Anita Merrell.
