ALBANY — Mrs. Ruby L. Chavers, 83, 887-B U.S. Highway 19 North, died Wednesday, July 26, 2006, in Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital. Graveside services will be conducted at 3 p.m. today in Lebanon cemetery with the Rev. Lanier Roberts officiating.
A native of Elmore County, Ala., Mrs. Chavers was born Sept. 13, 1922, a daughter of the late Wesley Montgomery and Nancy Millie Regan Montgomery. She was a homemaker and one of the founders of the First Assembly of God Church. In recent years she had attended the Heritage Church of God.
The family received friends from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, July 27, at Hancock Funeral Home. At other times, friends may call at the residence of Wesley and Emily Chavers, 887-A U.S. Highway 19 North. Memorial contributions may be made to the Heritage Church of God, Highway 30 West, Americus, GA. 31719.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Wesley and Emily Chavers and Billy Lamar and Anna Laura Chavers all of Americus; grandchildren, Billy L. Chavers Jr. and his wife Mary and Wes Chavers Jr. all of Americus, Karen and Kevin Smith of Evansville, Ind., Penny Sue and Jeff Statham of Tifton and Bobbie Jo and David Reynolds of Baconton; nine great-grandchildren; one great, great-grandson and several nieces and nephews. Her husband, James Oscar Chavers, preceded her in death on Feb. 14, 1994.

Marietta Maddox Mathis
AMERICUS — Services for Mrs. Marietta Maddox Mathis are at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 29, 2006, at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, Americus. Mrs. Mathis, daughter of the late Rufus Maddox and Mrs. Martha Patrick Maddox, was born Oct. 10, 1913, in Marion County. “Mae” was a member of the Vineyard Workers Ministry at Mt. Olive Baptist Church. For a number of years, she was employed with Life of Georgia.
She departed this life on Sunday, July 23, 2006, at Sumter Regional Hospital. She is survived by an adopted daughter and caregiver, Charlene Cunningham; two grandchildren, Ja’Ron and Tamika Cunningham; sister-in-law, Fannie Maddox; several nieces, nephews including Catherine Gipson, Mary Terry, Shirley Gilder and Clyde Bradford; devoted friends, Easter Shelton, Bernestine Mansfield, William Arnett, Lillie Ruth Smith, Teresa Ide and Tando Cooper; cousins, other relatives and friends including the staff of Visiting Nurses Associates of Cordele.

Carol Lynn Ritchie
AMERICUS — Miss Carol Lynn Ritchie, 60, died late Monday evening, July 31, 2006, at Magnolia Manor Nursing Center in Americus. The remains have been cremated and a Holy Mass for Christian Burial will be held at noon Thursday, Aug. 3 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Americus with Father Clif Marquis S.T. officiating.
Miss Ritchie was a native of Pittsburg, Penn. and was born the daughter of the late Harry James Ritchie and her mother whom survives her, Mary R. King Ritchie of Americus. She was a graduate of Virginia Tech University with a doctorate degree in Education and was the Dean of Students at Georgia Southwestern State University since 1981 until her health began to decline. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
Miss. Ritchie is survived by several cousins and church family along with friends and special friend Mrs. Marguerite Weatherly of Americus. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society c/o Mrs. Ann Harris, 1801 Rose Ave., Americus, GA 31709.

AMERICUS — Mrs. Lois T. Nance, age 89, of 2001 S. Lee St., died at her residence on Thursday, Aug. 3, 2006 following years of declining health. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 5, in the Martha McDonald Moore Memorial Chapel at Magnolia Manor with the Rev. Dennis Stalvey and the Rev. John Brodess officiating. iIntermentwill follow at 4 p.m. in the Laurel Hill Cemetery, Thomasville, with the Rev. Brooks Partain officiating.
Born March 1, 1917, in Thomas County, Mrs. Nance was a daughter of the late George Thompson and Laura Eva Walker Thompson Powell. She was preceded in death by two husbands, Walter J. Martin and the Rev. William M. Nance Jr. She was a homemaker and member of the Lee Street United Methodist Church. A minister’s wife, she was active in all phases of church work.
The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 4, at Hancock Funeral Home. They suggest memorials be made to the League of the Good Samaritan, 2001 S. Lee St., Americus, GA 31709.
Survivors include her son, Kenneth W. Martin of Atlanta, and several nieces and nephews, all of whom reside in the Thomasville area.

Julia Parker Scifres
AMERICUS — Mrs. Julia Scifres, age 85, of 2001 S. Lee St. died late Wednesday, August 2, 2006, at Magnolia Manor Nursing Center. Mrs. Scifres was born January 15, 1921, a daughter of the late Wilburn W. Parker and Annie Brooks Parker. She was the widow of William Mathis Scifres, Jr. A native of Fulton County, she lived in Decatur before moving to Americus in 1992. She was a member of the DAR, a member of the Kathleen Gardner Sunday School Class, the Silvertones choir, and the Monday PM Prayer Group of Central Baptist Church where she was a member. Mrs. Scifres was a very godly woman and a real prayer warrior.
Funeral services will be held in the chapel of Greg Hancock Funeral Chapel at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 5, 2006, with Rev. Hugh DeLoach officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens. A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, August 4 at the funeral home. At other times friends may call at the residence of Betty Anne and Eddie Ward, 411 Pecan Dr.

ALBANY — Mr. Carmel Von Blan, age 67, of 899 Douglas Circle, Americus, died Sunday afternoon, July 30, 2006, at Palmyra Park Medical Center in Albany. The remains have been cremated and a graveside memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2006, at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Americus, with the Rev. Keith Wisham officiating. The family will be receiving friends at the residence of Mike and Vonda Rushing, 140 South Forty, in Americus.
Mr. Blan, a native of DeQueen, Ark., was born the son of the late Oscar Carmel Blan and Ruby Mae Boatman Blan on Jan. 13, 1939. He was employed with International Minerals and Chemical Co. IMC, and a member of the Church of Christ. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Mr. Blan is survived by his wife, Linda Carol Arnold Blan of Americus; a daughter and son-in-law, Vonda Rushing and Mike of Americus; son and daughter-in-law, Garry Blan and Lori of Lawrenceville. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Whitney and Madison Blan of Lawrenceville, and Nikki Rushing Hicks of Warner Robins. Mr. Blan was preceded in death by a brother, Dean Blan, and a grandchild, Taylor Blan.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Betty Hyte McDaniel, 57, a resident of Montgomery, Ala., died Sunday, July 23, 2006. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m., Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at Leak-Memory Chapel with the Rev. Chuck Ashley and the Rev. Kenny Holmes officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.
Mrs. Hyte was a loving and devoted daughter, wife, mother and grandmother. She was a member of First Baptist Church and a long-time employee of BellSouth. She loved her family and Auburn football. She is preceded in death by her beloved father Andrew Franklin McDaniel Jr.
She is survived by her husband Winston Hyte; daughter, Tara Hyte; son, Rhett Hyte and his wife Melanie; granddaughter, Alexandria Gracyn Hyte; mother, Betty McDaniel; three sisters, Jean Stovall and her husband Wayne, Gloria Oates and her husband Thomas, and Rita Fitzgerald and her husband Louis, and her brother, Andrew Franklin McDaniel III.

FORSYTH — Lennis Nadine “Lynn” Brown died Monday, July 3, 2006, after a lengthy illness. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Forsyth United Methodist Church with burial in Monroe Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Ken Stephens and the Rev. Jan Devereaux will officiate. Visitation was held from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday, July 6, 2006, at Monroe County Memorial Chapel.
Mrs. Brown was born in Anniston, Ala. on Oct. 4, 1919. She was the daughter of the late Worley Ambers Lipham and Flora Kitchens Lipham. Her husband, Dr. Norris Clifford Brown, preceded her in death. Mrs. Brown was retired from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (ASCS) . She was a member of Forsyth United Methodist Church where she served as Church hostess, kitchen chairman, Altar Guild Chairman, nominating committee, Administrative Board member and secretary, Communion Steward and GRPC committee, a member of the United Methodist Women, a member of the Tuesday morning prayer group. She was very active in all of the above for many years. Mrs. Brown was a member of Georgia Chiropractic Association Auxiliary.
Survivors include her children, Roy H. (Miriam) Brown of Macon and Sandy Brown Sudduth of Americus; sister, Julia Hughes of Birmingham, Ala; brother, Garland Lipham of Anniston, Ala.; grandchildren, Lawson (Audrey) Brown, Heather Brown (Lance) Anderson, Jay (Mandy) Sudduth and Hillary (Scott) Everidge; great-grandchildren, Abbey Brown, Olivia Brown, Owen Rocky Anderson, Marley Sudduth, Cayden Sudduth and Brant Everidge.

AMERICUS — Funeral services for the late Mr. Alonzo Davis of 107 Palm Court, Americus, who passed on Thursday, July 6, 2006, at the Sumter Regional Hospital will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 11, from the Big Bethel Baptist Church. The Rev. Jesse Watts will officiate and burial will follow in the Daniel cemetery. The remains will lie in repose at the church one hour prior to the services.
Mr. Alonzo Davis was born in Sumter County on June 25, 1964, to the parentage of the late Mrs. Mary Bernice Hawkins Davis and Mr. David Lee Davis, who survives.
He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, Mrs. Lucille Dowdell Davis; two sons, Mr. Tavoris Davis and Mr. Keldrain Davis; one daughter, Ms. Kenyate Dowdell; his father, Mr. David Lee (Patricia) Davis; three brothers, Mr. Daryl Davis, Mr. Martin Davis and Mr. Tyrone (Sabrina) Davis; four sisters, Ms. Sheryl Scott, Ms. April Davis, Ms. Rita (Frank) Mann and Ms. DeShavia Simone Davis; his father and mother-in-law, Mr. Matthew Lewis and Ms. Iona Dowdell and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends also survive.

FORT VALLEY — Mrs. Mattie Rebecca Altman Reese, 87, formerly of Americus, died on Friday, July, 7, 2006, in Christ Sanctified Holy Church Home for the Aged in Fort Valley following several months of declining health. Funeral services will be conducted at 4 p.m. today in the chapel of Hancock Funeral Home with interment to follow in Oak Grove Cemetery. Dr. Reed Crumbliss will officiate. The family will receive friends at the funeral home for an hour preceding the service.
Mrs. Reese was born March 15, 1919, in Johnson County. She was a homemaker and a member of Bethel Baptist Church. She loved to read her Bible and listen to Christian music.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Lisa Ann and Jerry Moss of Elwood, Ind. and Jeanette and Ottis White of Carrollton; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jimmy and Dianne J. Belcher of Perry and James Ellis and Debra Belcher of Irwinton and a number of grandchildren; great-grandchildren; great; great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Her husband, Willie Richard Reese, preceded her in death on Oct. 30, 1995.

AMERICUS — Mr. Bobby Larkin, age 56, of 134-A Georgia Forest Road, Americus, died Sunday, August 6, 2006 at his residence. Born March 30, 1950, Mr. Larkin was a native of Peach County, the son of the late Cecil R. Larkin and Nannie Barefield Larkin. He was owner of Larkin Painting. He was of the Baptist faith.

RICHLAND — Carrie Pauline Daniel Dacus, 93, died Sunday, August 13, 2006, at Four County Health Care in Richland.
Funeral services were held at Enterprise Baptist Church in Richland on Monday, August 14, 2006, at 3:00 p.m. with Rev. Robert Orr, Rev. Rendell Day and Rev. Tim Cadenhead officiating. Music was provided by Helen Adams. iIntermentfollowed in the Macedonia Baptist Church cemetery in Webster County. There was no formal visitation. Pallbearers were Mike McGlaun, Wayne Lyles, Buddy Jones, Steve Miller and George Moore. Smith Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Dacus was born October 31, 1912, in Carroll County, GA, daughter of Robert Jefferson and Ollie Bell Daniel. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Holcombe Keith Dacus; her son Eugene Dacus; five brothers Joe Daniel, Jepp Daniel, Charlie Daniel, Homer Daniel and Lunus Daniel; and two sisters Annie Maude Blackstock and Kate Highnote.
A member of Enterprise Baptist Church, she was a Sunday school teacher and a director of Bible School. She was the WMU president. She was also a member of Preston Woman’s Club and volunteered as a Pink Lady at the Stewart-Webster Hospital.
Survivors include her son Arnold R. Dacus (Callie) of Richland; daughter Pauline D. West of Preston; daughter-in-law Delie F. Dacus of Richland; sister-in-law Inez Daniel of Americus; grandchildren: George and Wynona Jones of Weston, William and Neal Futch of Preston, Jeff and Elaine Schramm of Preston, Russell and Judy Surles of Richland, Tim and Traci Davis of Preston, Keith and Joanne Dacus of Preston, Neal and Jill Howell of Jasper, Jack and Pat Callaway of Preston and Tammy West of Americus; and 12 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and large number of nieces and nephews.

Eura Bell Hurley Sheffield
AMERICUS — Funeral services for Eura Bell Hurley Sheffield of 131 Pecan Terrace, Americus, who passed on Wednesday, August 9, 2006, at Sumter Regional Hospital was held at 11 a.m. Monday, August 14, from the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Brother Eddie Black officiated and burial will follow in the Andersonville National Cemetery. The remains lie in repose at the Hall one hour prior to the services.
Mrs. Eura Bell Hurley Sheffield was born in Sumter County on Oct. 30, 1937, to the parentage of the late Mr. Peter Hurley and the late Mrs. Minnie Minter Hurley.
She leaves to cherish her memories: a devoted son, Mr. Henry (Brenda) Sheffield; a sister, Mrs. Ernestine (Isaac) Robinson; a brother, Mr. John Hurley; six grandchildren, Demetrius Hubbard, Decethia (George) Garrett, Tawanna Sheffield, Shanta’ Sheffield, Trendnell (Nita) Sheffield and Danyelle Sheffield all of Americus; 23 grandchildren and a host nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends, including a devoted friend, Ms. Freddie Battle also survive.
