Hershel Hubert Mason

COBB — Mr. Hershel H. Mason, 54, died Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2006, at his residence. Mr. Mason was born June 17, 1952, a son of the late Hubert Mason and Dorothy Lott Dillon. He was self employed as a truck driver and attended Lakeview Baptist Church.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, Nov. 4, at Rosehill cemetery in Ashburn, with the Rev. Damon Fountain and the Rev. Lawton Sammons officiating.

Survivors include a son, Whitey Kirby of Lakeland, Fla.; a sister and brother-in-law, Sanora and Benny Dominy of Americus and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Clifford Mason.

Friends and relatives may call at the residence of Sanora and Benny Dominy, 206 Smith St., Americus.

Greg Hancock Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Joe D. Grant

AMERICUS — Mr. Joe D. Grant, 68, 1015 Oglethorpe Ave., died very early Tuesday morning, Oct. 31, 2006, in Sumter Regional Hospital. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 3, in the chapel of Hancock Funeral Home, with interment to follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Employees of Fox International Co. are requested to serve as honorary pallbearers.

Born May 13, 1938, in Sumter County, Mr. Grant was a son of the late William Almon Grant and Bessie Estelle Autry Grant. He was a longtime member of Salem United Methodist Church and served as a bookkeeper for Fox International Co. In recent years, he enjoyed sitting in the entry-way at WalMart, watching and visiting with people as they came and went, frequently handing quarters to children as they passed by him. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 2, at Hancock Funeral Home.

Survivors include a sister and brother-in-law, Cherry Ann and Joe Cooper of Bronwood; niece, Peggy J. Harris and her husband, Ronnie, of Lee County; nephew, Gary W. Cooper and his wife, Christie, of Terrell County; several cousins including Carolyn Joiner, Eva Bridges and Lois McGlamry of Americus and Joyce Melvin of Leslie; several great nephews and several great, great nieces and great, great nephews.

Hancock Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

AMERICUS — Funeral arrangements for Elaine Woodham of Americus, GA who died on Tuesday Oct. 31 at the Sumter Regional Hospital are incomplete and will be announced later by Barnum Funeral Home.

Richard Neil Ford

LESLIE — A memorial service for Richard Neil Ford will be held at 2 p.m. today, Sunday, Nov. 19, 2006 at Stillwater Chapel in Ideal. Mr. Ford, 81, of Leslie died at Magnolia Manor Nursing Center in Americus Friday, Nov. 17, 2006. He was born Monday, Feb. 2, 1925, in Struthers, Ohio, and was the son of the late Raymond Maurice Ford and Gladys Florine Larrison. He was retired from Dixie Lix Industries Inc. where he was the co-owner along with his late wife. Mr. Ford was a World War II veteran and had served in the United States Navy as a radarman. He was a member of the Methodist faith.

He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Brad and Mimi Ford of Cordele and Alan Dale and Cheryl Ford of Cobb; a sister, Lois Binzer of Palm Harbor, Fla.; three grandchildren, Dr. Alan Ford and his wife, Kristen, of Albany and Bradshaw N. Ford and Natalie O. Ford, both of Cordele; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Jane Ford and two brothers, Jack Ford and Kline Ford.

Ronald Steve McSpadden Sr.

AMERICUS — Mr. Ron McSpadden, age 57, of 795 Brady Road, died at his residence on Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2006. Mr. McSpadden was born March 12, 1949, in Sumter County and had lived here most of his life.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today, Sunday, Nov. 19, 2006, in the chapel of Greg Hancock Funeral Chapel, 142 Southland Road, with the Rev. Keith Wishum officiating.

Mr. McSpadden is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Hope and Joe Robbins of Columbus, and April and Kevin Olesen of Riverview, Fla.; and one son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Danielle McSpadden of Americus. Also surviving are three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Larry McSpadden of Americus, Tommy and Stella McSpadden of Byron, and Hal and Mandy Cromer of Americus; and nine grandchildren.

Sarah Hilda Phillips

COLUMBUS — Mrs. Sarah Hilda Phillips, age 70, of Phenix City, Ala., died Thursday afternoon, Nov. 16, 2006 at St. Francis Hospital in Columbus. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. today, Nov. 19, 2006, at Oak Grove cemetery with the Rev. Gerald Corbin officiating. The family will received friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 18, 2006, at Aldridge Funeral Services.

Mrs. Phillips was born Dec. 6, 1935 in Americus, the daughter of the late Oscar W. Phillips and Sarah Francis Howell Phillips. She was of the Baptist faith and former co-owner of Sizemore Wheel Alignment of Columbus. She was preceded in death by her brother, Wade Phillips.

Sybol Kivett Allen

ALBANY — Sybol Kivett Allen, age 46, of Hawkinsville, died Sunday, Nov. 19, 2006 in an Albany hospital. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2006 in the Westview Baptist Church with the Rev. Freddie Rhodes officiating. Burial will be in the Pulaski-Bleckley Memorial Gardens in Bleckley County.

Sybol was a native of Rowan County, N.C., and a member of Westview Baptist Church. Sybol was a loving wife and wonderful mother. She was a believer in Jesus Christ and lit up this world with her love, her smile and her bubbly personality. She loved her family, all children were her friends, and had a passion for truth and righteousness.

Survivors include her husband, Larry Allen; children, Bethany Allen, Lydia Allen, Caleb Allen, Joseph Allen, Marianna Allen, David Allen, John Mack Allen and Micah Allen, all of Hawkinsville; father, Frank Kivett of North Carolina; mother, Brenda Kivett of Greensboro, N.C.; grandparents, Les and Frances Haney of Louisiana; sister, Kim Atkins of North Carolina; brothers, Brian Kivett of North Carolina, Charlie Kivett of Virginia and Monty Kivett of North Carolina; and several nieces and nephews.

Clark Funeral Home of Hawkinsville is in charge of arrangements.

Louise L. Blankinship

CORDELE — Louise L. Blankinship, age 93, of Vienna, died Monday in a Cordele hospital.

Born in Dooly County, she was the daughter of the late Robert Edward Loper and Meta Jones Loper. She was a member of Bakerfield Baptist Church, a homemaker and the widow of Bernard M. Blankinship.

Survivors are her daughters, Gladys Roberson of Milledgeville and Earline Collier (Earl) of Vienna; a son, Bobby Loper (Phyllis) of Andersonville; eight grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Bakerfield Baptist Church. iIntermentwill follow in the Swearingen Cemetery.

Althea B. Murphy

AMERICUS — Mrs. Althea B. Murphy, age 64, of 366-A Shiloh Road, Americus died at her residence Monday evening, Nov. 20, 2006. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday afternoon, Nov. 24, 2006 from Shiloh Baptist Church with the Rev. Hugh Harbort and the Rev. Tommy McConnell officiating with burial to follow at Oak Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at Aldridge Funeral Services, and at other times, the family residence, 366-A Shiloh Road. Serving as active pallbearers are Drew Wells, Josh Cyprian, Christopher Wilson, Tony Wilson, John Wilson and Jackie Welch.

Mrs. Murphy was born May 18, 1942 in Newfoundland, Canada, the daughter of the late Frederick E. Brenton and Elsie Beatrice Johnson Brenton. She was a member of the Salvation Army and was an LPN Nurse, and worked for Dr. Harvey L. Simpson Jr., while he was in practice in Americus before his retirement for 31 years.

Mrs. Murphy is survived by her loving husband, Drew S. Murphy Sr. of Americus; two son and daughters-in-law, David S. Murphy Sr. and Laura and Drew S. Murphy Jr. and Robin, both of Americus; six brothres and sisters-in-law, Samuel Brenton and Kay of Newfoundland, Canada and Wayne Brenton and Winnie also of Newfoundland, Canada; Eric Brenton and Joyce of Calgary, Canada, Ralph Brenton and Alice of Ontario, Canada, Elmore Brenton and Pat of Ontario, Canada and Allan Brenton and Jean of Nova Scotia, Canada; a half-brother and his wife, Norman Johnson and Ruby of Newfoundland, Canada. Also surviving are a sister and brother-in-law, Phyllis Wells and Don of Newfoundland, Canada, and an Aunt Becky Wilson of Americus; three grandchildren, David Murphy Jr. and Allie Murphy, both of Americus and Lori Wormer of New York; two great-grandchildren, David and Mathew Wormer.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, C/O Mrs. Ann Harris, 1801 Rose Ave., Americus, GA 31709; Hospice of Americus and Sumter County, Inc., P.O. Box 1434, Americus, GA 31709; or to the Salvation Army, 609 E. Lamar St., Americus, GA 31709.

AMERICUS — Funeral arrangements for Judith Davis, of 913 Ridge St., who died Monday at Sumter Regional Hospital, will be announced by West’s Mortuary of Americus and Montezuma.

AMERICUS — Funeral arrangements for Jimmy Lee Woods Sr., of 240-B S. Dudley St., who died Sunday at his residence, will be announced by West’s Mortuary of Americus and Montezuma.

David Howard Leap

LAKELAND, FL – David Howard Leap, 49, died of heart failure on Nov. 2, 2006. Born in McGaheysville, VA, David went to work in food service at Sunnyside Nursing Home when he was 14 years old and managed a Bonanza Steak House in Harrisonburg, VA while attending James Madison University. He moved to Lakeland in June 1982 to become catering manager at Florida Southern College. David worked his way up to Food Service Director, becoming a faithful employee for over 24 years. He was a member of Family Worship Center, Lakeland Bassmasters and Florida B.A.S.S. Federation Nations. David was preceded in death by his mother, Edna Doval Leap.

Survivors include his wife; Marsha McCrary Leap, of Lakeland and formerly of Americus, GA; father, Thomas Y. Leap of McGaheysville, VA; brother, Thomas Leap, Jr. and his wife Cindy; niece and nephew, Megan and Justin Leap of Charlotte, NC; mother-in-law, Joyce McCrary, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Dolores and Ricky Crook; niece and nephew, Ashleigh and Austin Crook, of Americus, GA, brother-in-law, Stewart McCrary; nephews, Daniel McCrary, Matthew McCrary and Jonathan McCrary, of Excelsior Springs, Missouri formerly of Americus, GA.

Services were held at 3:00 p.m. Monday, Nov. 6 at Florida Southern College in Lakeland. Internment was in East Lawn cemetery in Harrisonburg, VA.

Lakeland Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens is in charge of the arrangements.

Don Rucker Tomlinson

MACON — Mr. Don Tomlinson, age 85, formerly of Americus, died late Thursday Nov. 23, 2006 in Chattanooga, TN. Mr. Tomlinson was born in Athens, TN on January 25, 1921 and moved to Macon, GA in 1925 where he attended public schools and graduated from Lanier High School in 1940.

He was active in sports at Lanier and also played amateur baseball in the Macon area, attended Mulberry UMC and was a member of the Boy Scouts of America. He joined the National Guard in 1937 and was on active duty in 1940 serving one year in the U.S. Army at Ft. Jackson. He was a W.W.II veteran with 3-1/2 years of service in the U.S. Navy on a carrier, the Bon Homm Richard. Following his discharge he lived in Chattanooga, TN for 12 years and was employed by DuPont Corporation for 10 years.

He married Geraldine Smith in 1946 and moved to Macon, GA in 1958 where he was a representative of the Equitable Life of N.Y. for 25 years and retired in 1983. His wife, Jerry, preceded him in death Nov. 27, 2003.

He was an active member of Cross Keys UMC and taught adult Sunday School there for 30 years. Jerry and Don moved to Magnolia Manor in Americus, Ga. in 1989 and was an active member of Lee Street UMC.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, Dec. 2, at Lee Street UMC with Rev. Brooks Partain, Rev. Gene Yelverton and Rev. Ray Wilder officiating. There will be a luncheon in the church fellowship hall following the service where the family will greet friends and guests.

The family request that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the League of the Good Samaritan, 2001 S. Lee Street, Americus, Ga. 31709.

Survivors include a daughter, Donna Anderson Craig of Cumming, Ga; a son, William Neal Tomlinson of Loganville, GA. and three grandchildren, Shannon A. Smith of Reno, NV, Jason N. Tomlinson of Largo, FL and Amanda Tomlinson Johnson of Kingsland, GA.

Clisbert Smith

Buena Vista—Clisbert Smith, 90, of Aldridge Rd., Buena Vista, GA died Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2006 in Columbus, Georgia.

Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m., Friday, Dec. 1 at the Oglethorpe Funeral Chapel, Inc., 607 Kaigler St., Oglethorpe, GA. iIntermentwill follow in Galilee Cemetery, Ellaville GA.

Survivors are; children: Annie Smith Westberry, James Alfred Smith, Beatrice Storey, Bobby Smith (Mary Bryant), Danny Smith, Shirley Smith Taylor (Kenneth), Hazel Smith Hawkins and Dennis Smith; daughter-in-law, Helen Fudge Smith; sister, Ida Mae Carter; 9 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Oglethorpe Funeral Chapel, Inc. is charge of the arrangements.

RIVERDALE — Funeral arrangements for Thomas Jones Jr., who died Wednesday at the Southern Regional Medical Center in Riverdale, will be announced by Barnum Funeral Home.

SMYRNA — Funeral arrangements for Betty Jane Griffin of 3678 Wisteria Lane, Smyrna, who died Wednesday at the Tranquility Hospice in Smyrna, will be announced by Aldridge Funeral Services.

Marilyn Caldwell Mangum

VALDOSTA — Marilyn Caldwell Mangum, 87, of Valdosta, died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2007 at the home of her daughter. She was born on Nov. 22, 1919 in Metcalfe to the late Eugene F. and Martha Kerr Caldwell and had lived in Valdosta for many years. Mrs. Mangum was the office manager for Mangum Front End Service and a homemaker. She was a member of the Northside Baptist Church where she worked in the nursery for many years. She enjoyed the company of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her two daughters and sons-in-law, Martha Jean and Jimmy Carter of Quitman, Mary Lynn and Marshall Harper of Valdosta, two sons, George Samuel Wilson Mangum Jr. of Moultrie and Steve Caldwell Mangum of Valdosta; six grandchildren, Paul Yale, Kevin Harper, Angela Harper VanNortwick and her husband Mark, Joel Harper, Keith Mangum and Katie Mangum Bain and her husband, Michael; two great-grandchildren, Ryan VanNortwick and Aubree VanNortwick; one brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Kay Caldwell of California; two sisters, Rebecca Odom and Shirley Abercrombie both of Valdosta and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Samuel Wilson Mangum Sr., and one sister, Jean Baker.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home with the Rev. Bob Willis officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Hill Cemetery. The family received friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
