Wendy Leigh Mifflin
ATLANTA — Ms. Wendy Leigh Mifflin, 42, 225 Murphy Mill Rd., Americus, passed away Jan. 1, 2007, at Northside Hospital in Atlanta, following several months of declining health. Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in Oak Grove cemetery with the Rev. Sam Maves officiating.
A native of Sumter County, Ms. Mifflin was born Sept. 10, 1964, a daughter of Billie Mac Wilson Mifflin of Americus, who survives, and the late Harold Monroe Mifflin Sr. She was a graduate of Americus City Schools and completed extensive instruction before obtaining her insurance credentials. She was retired from New York Life Insurance Co. in Atlanta, where she had served as a surrender and claims agent. The family received friends and relatives from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 2, at Hancock Funeral Home. At other times, friends are invited to call at 708 Varsity Drive.
Survivors, in addition to her mother, include a son, Charles Rucker; brother, Hal Mifflin, both of Americus and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, Hwy. 27 East and Dellwood Drive, Americus, GA. 31709 or to any favorite charity.

Lucy Helen Haynes Rozzell
WARNER ROBINS — Lucy Helen Haynes Rozzell, 84, of Warner Robins died Sunday, Dec. 17, 2006, at Peachbelt Nursing Home in Warner Robins where she had been a resident for the past nine years. Memorial services will be 11:30 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 6, 2007, at the chapel of Cox Funeral Home, Manchester. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. The Rev. David Miller, pastor of First Church of the Nazarene, Warner Robins, will officiate.
Mrs. Rozzell was born April 16, 1922 in Manchester, the daughter of the late E.J. and Gladys Briley Haynes. She was a lifelong member of the Nazarene Church. Her late husband, the Rev. M.H. Rozzell, served many pastorates in Georgia until his death in 1922. Mrs. Rozzell served by his side for 37 years of his ministry following their marriage in 1955. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Rozzell was preceded in death by three brothers, James, John and Bill Haynes.
Survivors include her sister, Mrs. Gladys R. Ridley of Macon; sister-in-law, Mrs. Dott Haynes of Doraville; nieces, Janice Dixon of Carrollton, Ann Osteen of Gainesville, Fla., Harriette O’Stean of Rainbow City, Ala.; Brenda Tabb of Thomaston and Mary Lib Connell of Augusta; nephews include, Jim Haynes of Gamaliel, AK, John Haynes of Albany, Tom Haynes of Chesterfield, Va., Tim Haynes of Nashville, Tenn., Chuck Haynes of Doraville, Haynes Willingham of Honduras and Jimmy Haynes of Texas.
Mrs. Rozzell is also survived by two very special caregivers, Mrs. Gail Goodwin of Bonaire and Mrs. Jackie White of Americus. Mrs. Goodwin blessed Mrs. Rozzell each Monday as she visited for the past nine years. Mrs. White was invaluable in helping Mrs. Rozzell during her residence in Americus, following the death of the Rev. Rozzell. These two special ladies blessed Mrs. Rozzell with their ministry and her family in all they did for her. Special appreciation is extended to them from the family.

John Wilson Peak
AMERICUS — Mr. John Wilson Peak, 45, of 136 Taylor St., Americus died early Sunday morning, Jan. 14, 2007, at his residence; the remains have been cremated. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2007, at First United Methodist Church Chapel. The Rev. Jim McIlrath and the Rev. Bill Dupree will officiate. The family will receive friends at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. David Peak, 136 Taylor St., Americus.
Mr. Peak was born Dec. 7, 1961, in Columbus, the son of John David Peak and Harriett Wilson Peak, both of whom survive. He was a graduate of Southland Academy. He also attended Georgia Southwestern College and served as an intern under U.S. Congressman Jack Brinkley. He worked as a commercial and residential landscaper in Atlanta. He was of the Methodist faith.
Mr. Peak is survived by, in addition to his parents, a daughter, Moylan Sinclaire Peak of Anderson, S.C.; a son, Nathaniel Wilson Peak, also of Anderson, S.C.; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Brooks Nettum and Richard Nettum of Americus, and Sally Peak of Americus; a brother, Wilson Peak of New York City, N.Y.; and a nephew, Lee Everett, also of Americus. Also surviving are aunts, uncles and cousins.

Robert Lee Coker
AMERICUS — Mr. Robert Lee Coker, 46, of 247 Ga. Highway 49 South, Americus died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2007 at his residence. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2007 from the Chapel of the Aldridge Funeral Services with Rev. Tommy McConnell and Rev. Teddy Hubbard officiating. The remains will be cremated following services on Tuesday.
Mr. Coker was born on April 27, 1960 son of the late Roy Coker Sr. and Rosemary Ryan Coker in Jackson County, Ga. He was a mechanic for most of his working career and was a member of Rehoboth Baptist Church.
Survivors include his mother, Rosemary Ryan Coker of Americus; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Gloria Gladney and Roger of Cordele, Ruby Parker and George of Campbellsville, KY and Christina Lawhorn and Chet of Woodbury, Ga.; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Roy Coker Jr. and Mary Jane of Cordele and Horace Coker of Nicholls, Ga.; three step-daughters, Amy Cherry, Pamula Adams and Amanda Register all of Americus; one step-son, Michael Springer also of Americus, ten step-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews also survive.
Mr. Coker was preceded in death by two wives Anna Coker and Sylvia Hubbard and a sister Nita C. Brown.

Richard Denson
DESOTO — Richard Denson, Sr, 77, 303-A Ferguson Road, DeSoto, passed Friday, Dec. 29, 2006, at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 6, at New Corinth Baptist Church, Hooks Mill Road in Americus. iIntermentwill follow in the church cemetery. The Rev. Jessie Watts will officiate.
Survivors include his seven children, RIchard Floyd Denson Jr. (Ethel), Stacey Scott (Chris), Sheronika Denson, Diann Denson, Sammie Denson, Michael Denson and T.D. Biggins; three siblings, Mary Lee Tullis, Roscoe Denson and Sanford Floyd; two aunts, Julia Mae Denson and Mattie Ruth Williams; devoted friends, Raymon Bullard Jr. and Jessie B. Mercer. Also included are a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Hugh M. Mize Jr.
BRUNSWICK — Hugh M. Mize Jr., 80, of Darien, died Sunday, Dec. 31, 2006, at the Brunswick Hospital of Southeast Georgia Medical System. He was a native of Tampa and had been a resident of McIntosh County six years. He was a 1949 graduate of Auburn University and was a construction engineer.
He was a member of MOLE, men engaged in heavy construction, the Georgia Wildlife Federation, United States Industrial Council and American Concrete Institute. He was also a member of the NRA and was of the Baptist faith. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps and enjoyed fishing and gardening.
He is survived by a daughter, Kim Mize Lacocq of Darien; son, Dr. Todd Hugh Mize of Tucson, Ariz.; sister, Sandra Armstrong of Lawrenceville; brother, Dr. Jan Mize of Athens; two grandchildren, Brandon Lee Lacocq and Brianna Leigh Mize; a close companion, Betty Conklin of Bluffton, S.C.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 5, in the Chapel of Edo Miller & Sons Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. today, Thursday, Jan. 4, at the funeral home. Edo Miller & Sons Funeral Home of Brunswick is in charge of arrangements.
Johnny Wade Morgan
AMERICUS — Mr. Johnny Morgan, 75, of 167 Shiloh Road, died early Wednesday morning, Jan. 3, 2007, at Sumter Regional Hospital.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, Jan. 5, at Oak Grove cemetery with the Rev. Bud Womack officiating. A visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. today, Thursday, Jan. 4, at Greg Hancock Funeral Chapel.
A native of Hamilton County, Tenn., Mr. Morgan was born Feb. 23, 1931, a son of the late Daniel Morgan Sr. and Grace Wheeler Morgan. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, was retired from Reeves Construction Co. as a truck driver and attended Heritage Church of God. His wife, Agnes Smith Morgan, preceded him in death Aug. 19, 2001.
Lillian S. Bell
AMERICUS — Mrs. Lillian S. Bell, 94, passed away at the Magnolia Manor Nursing Center late Thursday evening, Jan. 4, 2007. The family received friends from 6-7 p.m. Friday, Jan, 5, at Hancock Funeral Home. Graveside services were conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 6., in Sunset Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Earl Dunmon officiating.
Born April 7, 1912, in Schley County, Mrs. Bell was a daughter of the late Edward Reddin Smith and Fannie Mae Bullock Smith. Her husband, Wallace Richard Bell, preceded her in death in 1991. Mrs. Bell worked at Manhattan Shirt Co. for about ten years and served at the hostess desk at the local hospital for about ten years. She was a member of Faith Baptist Church.
The family suggests that memorial gifts might be made to the League of the Good Samaritan, 2001 S. Lee St., Americus, GA 31709.
Survivors include a daughter, Joanne Mayo of Orlando; son and daughter-in-law, Herman and Jackie Bell of Americus; sister, Inez Daniel of Americus; grandchildren, Glenn and Mary Rose Mayo of LaFayette, Gina and Mickey Paradis of Orlando, Ricky and Michelle Bell of Ellaville, Wally and Sharon Bell of Lake Alfred, Fla. and Christy Bell of Americus; nine great-grandchildren; a great, great-granddaughter and several nieces and nephews.

Mildred Edwards Horne
AMERICUS — On Jan. 4, 2007, Mildred Edwards Horne departed her earthly home at 706 Harrold Ave., Americus, and went to be with the Lord in Heaven. She had lived 97 active years on earth, trusting in the Lord. Her favorite saying was “Jesus has been so faithful and good to me.” Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. today in the chapel of Hancock Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Bob Whitmire officiating. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery.
Mrs. Horne was born in Talbotton, the daughter of Janie and Edgar Edwards. She attended Talbotton City Schools and graduated from G.S.C.W. in Milledgeville, with a bachelor of science degree in elementary education. She taught in the Americus school system for 30 years. She was married
to Ely Horne, clerk of superior court in Americus for over 50 years. He preceded her in death, as did a sister, Lalia E. McKinnon and a brother, Cecil Edwards.
Survivors include two daughters, Jane Horne Turner of Albany and Millie Horne Carlton and husband, Bucky, of Birmingham, Ala. Her six grandchildren are George W. Turner Jr. of Marietta, Jan Turner Phillips of Albany, Fran Carlton Horne, Thomas Carlton and wife, Lisa, Carrie Carlton Mullins and husband, Scott, Martha Carlton Grooms and husband William, all of Birmingham.
Ryan Phillips of Birmingham, Allison Phillips of Valdosta, Collin Phillips of Albany, John Turner, Gini Turner and Susanna Turner, all of Marietta, Julianne, Haley and Noah Carlton, Wilkes and Julia Grooms and Wagner and Carlton Mullins, all of Birmingham, are Mrs. Horne’s great-grandchildren. Her very special friend and caretaker is Faye Freeman of Americus who she taught in the sixth grade.

ALBANY — Funeral services for Mr. Curtis Edward Hamilton of 112 Melody Lane, Americus, who passed on Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2007, at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, from the Friendship Baptist Church. The Rev. Melvin McCluster will officiate and burial will follow in the Staley Memorial Gardens. The remains will lie in repose at the church one hour prior to the services.
Mr. Curtis Edward Hamilton was born in Sumter County on Jan. 28, 1956 to the late Mr. James Frederick and the late Mrs. Mattie Pearl Hampton.
He leaves to cherish his memories, his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Ann Hamilton; two sons, Mr. Jerald Bernard Oliver and Mr. Gregory Hamilton; three daughters, Ms. Meshia Alexander, Ms. Charlotte Clark and Ms. Latoya Hamilton; seven grandchildren; ten brothers, Mr. Arthur “Rick” (Carolyn) Hamilton, Mr. Lamar (Mary Ann) Tarver, Mr. Larry (Jennie) Tarver, Mr. Gonza Lee “Scottie” Brown, Mr. Michael Cunningham, Mr. James “Zip” Cunningham, Mr. Donald (Nannette) Cunningham, Mr. Tony (Alfreeda) Cunningham, Mr. David (Bridgette) Frederick and Mr. Darryll Frederick, Tampa.

Marion Willoughby
PLAINS — Funeral services for Mr. Marion Willoughby will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 5, 2007, at the Andersonville National cemetery with the Rev. George Frank Monts officiating. Mr. Willoughby died Monday, Jan. 1, 2007, at Sumter Regional Hospital in Americus.
Mr. Marion Willoughby, son of the late Ernestine Hopkins Willoughby and the late William Willoughby, was born Dec. 24, 1932, in Greenville, N.C. He was the second eldest of seven children from this union. He attended school in the Pitt County school system in North Carolina and graduated from Rose High School in Greenville. He entered the armed forces during the Korean War era and was honorably discharged.He was a self-employed brick mason for over 40 years.
In his later life he joined Saint Mark A.M.E. Church under the pastorate of the Rev. W.E. Brown.
Marion was a very friendly, open and generous man although he could be stubborn at times.
He leaves to cherish his memory two brothers, James and Edward Earl; three sisters, Lois, Joyce and Valerie; seven children, Michael, Marion, Marvin, Ronald, Angela, Alitha and Mark; 15 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three daughters-in-law; one son-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.

Grady Scott Law
AMERICUS —Mr. Scott Law, age 36, died at his residence on Sunday evening, Jan.7, 2007. Born June 29, 1970, in Sumter County, Mr. Law was a son of Martin V. Law Jr. and Joann Scott Law, who survive him. He was a firefighter with the City of Americus Fire & Emergency Services and a member of Bethel Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2007, at First Baptist Church with Dr. Reed Crumbliss officiating. iIntermentwill follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Serving as pallbearers will be Greg Barfield, Roger Bivins, Terry Westberry, Gerald Whitehead, Michael Earl and Tim Hatem. Asked to serve as honorary pallbearers are Tommy Clark, Shannen Kitchens, Tim McClean, Chan Freeman, Clint Morgan, Dax Hoxsie and Lance Liggin.
