PORT ST. JOE, Fla. — Funeral arrangements for Lee Wisham, 86, who died Monday, Jan. 8, 2006, at Bay Saint Joseph Care Center in Port St. Joe, Fla., will be announced by Aldridge Funeral Services.
Sara Dawn Holcomb
NEWNAN — Sara Dawn Fowler Holcomb, 46, died at her home in Newnan on Jan. 14, 2007. Born Jan. 23, 1960, in Griffin, she was adopted at birth by the Rev. and Mrs. Homer G. Fowler, who was at the time pastor of Devotie Baptist Church in Griffin. Mrs. Holcomb spent most of her youth in Oglethorpe, where her daddy pastored White Water Baptist Church.
Mrs. Holcomb graduated from Southland Academy and attended South Georgia Technical College. For the past ten years, Mrs. Holcomb was employed by the Kroger Co., most recently at the Peachtree City store.
Mrs. Holcomb is survived by her husband, Donald Holcomb, and stepson, Christopher Holcomb. They were married
Feb. 29, 2000. Mrs. Holcomb was successful in locating seven of the surviving siblings.
They are Terri Smith Maples Rachael of Albany, Gena Statham Ford and David Smith of Griffin, Jeff Smith of Rex, Gary Smith of Annapolis, Md., Sheila Smith Waddell of San Diego and Larry Smith of Sacramento, Calif. Mrs. Holcomb is survived by her adopted family brothers, R. Dean Fowler of Steinhatchee, Fla. and Homer Smith Fowler of Griffin.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19, at White Water Baptist Church in Oglethorpe with the Rev. Johnny Brooks officiating. iIntermentwill be in Oglethorpe City Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-9 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 18, at the Watson-Mathews Funeral Home in Montezuma.

William Thomas Jr.
AMERICUS — Funeral services for William Thomas Jr., affectionately called “Mott, ” of 275 W. Rockhill Drive, Americus, who passed on Sunday, Jan. 14, 2007, in the Sumter Regional Hospital will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, from Lebanon Baptist Church . The Rev. George F. Monts Jr. will officiate and burial will follow in the Cool Springs Baptist Church Cemetery. The remains will lie in repose at the church one hour prior to the services.
Mr. William Thomas Jr. was born in Sumter County on Sept. 27, 1943, the first of five children to the parentage of the late Mr. William Thomas and the late Mrs. Willie Mae Thornton Thomas.
He leaves to cherish his memories, his wife of 30 years, Mrs. Gloria T. Thomas; children, Ms. Tadra Thomas, Ms. Tarnisha Thomas, Ms. Teresa Monts, Mrs. Gail (Melvin) Little, Mrs. Wanda (Vernon) Dariso, Mrs. Sonja (Frankie) Lucas and Mr. Marty Thomas; sister, Mrs. Emma Ruth (Sammie) Hall.
Survivors also include, three brothers, Mr. Jeremiah (Josephine) Thomas, Mr. Lorenzo (Reatha) Thomas and Mr. Darwin K. Hicks, father-in-law, Mr. Cullie Tullis; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends also survive.

Alma Mae Flynt
DOTHAN, Ala. — Mrs. Alma Mae Flynt, 90, died Friday morning, Jan. 19, 2007, at Southeast Alabama Medical Center in Dothan, Ala. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. today from the Chapel of Aldridge Funeral Services with the Rev. Ken Carpenter officiating with burial to follow at Oak Grove Cemetery.
The following grandchildren will serve as active pallbearers Heath Wade, Tiff Thompson, Don Thompson, Casey Spence, Dalton C. Oliver and Rodney Flynt. The family will receive friends from 2-3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home before services.
Mrs. Flynt was a native of Butts County and was born Jan. 10, 1917, the daughter of the late Lewis Alonzo Atkinson and Mary Alice Thaxton Atkinson. She was a homemaker, a member of the DAR and Glendale Garden Club. She was also a member of the First Baptist Church.
Mrs. Flynt is survived by her husband, Wylie Robert Flynt of Abbeville, Ala., daughter and son-in-law, Roslyn Flynt Oliver and Dalton of Georgetown; two sisters, Mina Head and Lucille Horton of Griffin; brother-in-law, James D. Head of Griffin; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and a great, great-grandchild and a number of nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Flynt was preceded in death by a daughter, Myrna Dean Thompson; son, Hugh Powell Flynt; sister, Lucy Ogilvie and a grandchild, Kerri Lane Thompson Wellons. Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer’s Assoc., 1512-1 Gillionville Rd., Albany, GA. 31707.

Marie H. McNeill
AMERICUS — Marie H. McNeill, 84, 2001 S. Lee St., formerly of 302 East Church St., died on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 20, 2007, in Magnolia Nursing Center. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 22, in the chapel of Hancock Funeral Home with entombment to follow in the McNeill mausoleum in Oak Grove Cemetery. The Rev. Matt Stewart will officiate. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until time for the funeral service Monday at Hancock Funeral Home.
Born July 22, 1922, in Sumter County, Miss McNeill was a daughter of the late Raymond McNeill and Marie Beall Hargrove McNeill. She received her education in the Americus city schools. She was a former executive secretary for WSB Radio in Atlanta, former member of the U.S. Foreign Service, stationed in embassies in Belgium and France and a former member of the administrative and accounting staff of Habitat for Humanity International in Americus.
She returned to Americus to care for her mother when such care became needed. Together she and her mother were very active in the historical society, the Lee Street United Methodist Church and the United Daughters of the Confederacy. She was also an active member of the Americus Pilot Club and the American Legion.
Survivors include an uncle, William C. Hargrove of Clermont and several cousins including Elizabeth Hightower of Cordele, Harry Hargrove of Birmingham, Ala., Roberta Nelson of Raleigh, NC, Benjamin T. Hargrove Jr. of Fruitland, Fla., Bonnie Morrison of Charlotte, NC and Sandra Carnet of Clermont. Locally, she is survived by more distant cousins in the McNeill, Hodges and Hargrove families.

James Edward Banks Jr.
AMERICUS — Funeral services for Master James Edward Banks Jr., affectionately called “Boo” of 114 Price St., will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, July 27, 2007 at Allen Chapel AME Church. The Rev. Nathan Veal will officiate and burial will follow in the Eastview cemetery. There will be a viewing of the body one hour prior to services at the church.
Master James Edward Banks Jr. was born on Sept. 6, 1996 in Sumter County to the parents of Mr. James Edward Banks and Norma Cook.
In addition to his parents he leaves to cherish his memories, brother, Mr. Travis Cook; grandparents, Ms. Ida Sampson, Mr. Willie Cook Jr. and Ms. Alma Banks; great-grandmother, Ms. Emma Cook and a host of aunts, including a devoted aunt, Ms. Elizabeth Banks, uncles, cousins, other relatives and friends also survive.

Walter Clyde Dozier Jr.
AMERICUS — Mr. Walter Clyde Dozier Jr. passed away shortly before noon on Tuesday, July 24, 2007. Graveside services will be conducted at 10 a.m. today in Lebanon cemetery with the Rev. Don Wilson officiating. The family will receive friends from 8:30 -9:30 a.m. today, preceding the graveside service. At other times, friends may call at the family residence, 199 Bob Dodson Rd., near Plains.

A native and lifetime resident of Sumter County, Mr. Dozier was a son of the late Walter Clyde Dozier Sr. and Mary Edith Duvall Dozier. He was a member of the Plains Baptist Church and was a prominent retired Sumter County farmer.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Marlene Sanders Dozier of Plains; daughter and son-in-law, Darlene and Scott Hobbs of Thomasville; son and daughter-in-law, Marvin and Judie Dozier of Plains; brother and sister-in-law, James R. and Connie Dozier of Plains; grandchildren, Phil Dozier of Plains, Katelyn Hobbs and Emily Hobbs both of Thomasville; aunts and uncles, Sara Masters of Americus, Ruth and Jim Russell of Macon and Bud and Joyce Duvall of Plains and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Evelyn Claudette Spear
AMERICUS — Funeral services for Ms. Evelyn Claudette Spear of Americus, GA will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 28, 2007, in the sanctuary of the Zion Hope Baptist Church in Sumter County, where the Rev. Reginald Jones is the pastor. Brother Johnathan Johnson will deliver the eulogy. iIntermentwill follow in the Eastview cemetery in Americus.
Ms. Spear was born June 23, 1955 and passed away on July 20, 2007 in the Stewart Webster Hospital in Richland. She was preceded in death by a loving father, Homer Spear, two devoted sisters, Stella and Gloria Johnson, and two loving brothers, John and James Hayes.
She leaves to cherish her fond memories and precious memories six children: Terry Spear, West Virginia; Kerry Spear, Carlton Spear, both of Americus, Erica Spear-Dowdell, Columbus, Tishena Christmas, Cyntoria Spear, both of Albany; six sisters; Reatha (Roosevelt) Moore, Americus, Louise (Donnell) Mathis, Emma (Lincoln) Bennett, Sandra VanAllen, all of Hartford, Conn.; two brothers, Timothy (Cheretta) Hayes, Hartford, Conn. and Charles (Johnnie Mae) Hayes, Aliquippa, Penn.; fifteen grandchildren, Sedarraiah Spear, Maria Spear, Terryanna Spear, Tierra Spear, Rhianna Spear, all of West Virginia, Shemekia Spear, Makaela Stewart, Trey'lique Stewart, Shaniyah Spear, Nikiyah Childs, Breana Coley, Tyla Stewart, all of Albany, Thaddius Harris, Theresia Spear, Flinza Davis Jr., all of Columbus, and two great-grandchildren, Jacoby Spear and Kaddariah Leverett, both of Americus; two devoted and caring friends, Beverly Tyson and Shirley Sheffield, both of Americus, and a host of other cousins, nieces, nephews, and many sorrowing friends.

Arthur Lee Mays
AMERICUS — Funeral arrangements for Arthur Lee Mays, 77, of 642 Mays Rd., Leslie, who died July 20, 2007 in Americus, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 28, at Piney Grove Baptist Church in Leesburg. The Rev. Willie G. Grover will officiate and interment will be at Piney Grove #3 Baptist Church Cemetery. There will be a viewing of the body from 10 a.m. until funeral hour Saturday at the church.
Mr. Mays was born March 28, 1930 in Lee County. He attended Chokee School in Lee County and Gillespie Seldan Institute in Cordele. He was a retired farmer and a member of Piney Grove #3 Baptist Church.
Survivors include: wife, Ella Ruth Mays of Leesburg; four daughters, Carolyn M. Kinbrough of Americus, Stephanie and Leon Scott of Ellenwood, Vicky and Gary Baker of Lithonia and Cynthia Mays of Dallas; four sons, Norman Mays of Leesburg, James and Denise Mays of Leesburg, Arthur and Renee Mays of Americus and Willie E. Walker of Leesburg.
Survivors also include: sister, Mrs. Mary Mays Porter of Detroit; two brothers, Mr. Robert and Ella Norma Mays and Mr. James N. Mays both of Leesburg; two brothers-in-law, Mr. Willie and Ella Dismuke and Mr. Joey and Margret Dismuke; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Eleanor Mays and Mrs. Dora Beasley; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

G. Stanley Wicker Sr.
AMERICUS — George Stanley Wicker, a long time resident of Americus, Ga., died on July 3, 2007.
He was born in Andersonville, and he grew up in the Cutoff Community.
His family were farmers and moved to a farm in Americus when Mr. Wicker was 12. Mr. Wicker purchased the farm in Americus and the Wickerlea farm is still in the family today.
Having a life long thirst for knowledge, he was a 1937 graduate of Georgia Southwestern College, where he was class president and later received the Most Outstanding Alumnus Award. Mr. Wicker won an academic scholarship to Emory University and after completing his bachelor’s degree, he enlisted in the Army. He fought in World War II with General Patton’s 3rd Army, where he flew 187 combat missions as a forward observer. Mr. Wicker was awarded several citations including the Air Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters and the European Theater Ribbon with Two Bronze Stars.
After the war, he attended George Washington University Law School, and earned a Juris Doctorate, and a Master of Law degree. “Mr. Stanley, ” as he was known, married
Margaret Keel of Milledgeville, and together they raised four children. He enjoyed a long and distinguished civil service career with the U.S. Government, serving as Chief of Programs & Planning at Redstone Arsenal in Alabama.
Mr. Wicker made a profession of faith in Christ, and the family takes comfort in his salvation and eternal rest. Stanley loved his family, his work, the farm and his garden. He was a long time member of the Americus Kiwanis Club.
Mr. Wicker is survived by his wife Margaret, daughters Sarah Wicker Haughton and Ruth Wicker Helms and sons George Stanley Wicker Jr. and Wesley Keel Wicker, his brother David Wicker and sisters Elizabeth Anderson and Ruth Sanderson. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Lauren Haughton, Kelley Haughton, Charles Haughton, Mara Wicker, Mary Elizabeth Wicker, and Maggie Helms.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 7, 2007 at the First United Methodist Church of Americus. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to the GEORGE STANLEY WICKER SCHOLARSHIP FUND at GEORGIA SOUTHWESTERN FOUNDATION, Wheatley Street, Americus, GA 31709.

Mr. Booker T. Solomon Jr. was born in Sumter County on July 27, 1953 to the parentage of the late Mr. Booker T. Solomon and Mrs. Thelma Solomon Foster, who survives.
He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife of 28 years, Mrs. Georgie Austin Solomon; two children, Mrs. Melanie (Terrance) Blake and Mr. Kevin Terrell Solomon; grandson, Mr. Javian Q. Blake; mother, Mrs. Thelma Solomon; four sisters, Evangelist Catherine Sims, Ms. Josephine Reese, Ms. Leana Thomas and Mrs. Evelyn (James) Davis; three bothers, Mr. Jesse W. Durham, Mr. Rayford Solomon and Mr. Roosevelt (Linda) Solomon and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends also survive.
