Joseph Payne "Pete" Phillips, 27, of Bellville diedFriday, Dec. 22, 2000 at Memorial Hospital in Savannah after an automobile accident.
A Bulloch County native, Mr. Phillips had lived in Bellville all his life. He was a member of Claxton Baptist Church and was a 1993 graduate of Claxton High School.
Survivors include his parents, Payne and Pamela Phillips of Bellville; a brother, Robert Paul Phillips of Bellville; maternal grandmother and step-grandfather, Dorothy C. McCulloch-Jackson and Joel W. Jackson of Milner; and several aunts and uncles.
Services were held Sunday, Dec. 24 at Eastside Baptist Church in Claxton. Burial were in Lake Cemetery.
Kennedy-Morgan Funeral Homes in Metter had charge of arrangements.
Cindy Jean Singletary
Cindy Jean Singletary, 36, of Dogwood Drive, Thomaston, diedSaturday, Dec. 23, 2000 at the Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon.
An Upson County native, Mrs. Singletary was the widow of Billy Singletary. A records/accounting clerk at the William Carter Company for 11 years, she was a member of Emory's Chapel Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Sarah Elizabeth Singletary of Thomaston; a brother, Eddie Johnson Jr. of Thomaston; and a sister, Shelia Wilson of Thomaston.
Services were held Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000 at Coggins Funeral Home in Thomaston. Burial was in Crystal Hill Cemetery in Thomaston. Rev. James Coogler officiated.
Beverly Hunnicutt Lester
Beverly "Bebe" Hunnicutt Lester, 74, of Sullivan Road, Zebulon, diedSaturday, Jan. 20, 2001 at Upson Regional Medical Center in Thomaston.
Mrs. Lester was bornApril 21, 1926. She was a member of Neal Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Rev. Jimmy Lester; three daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Rev. Glen Miller of Opelika, Ala.; Bobbie and Sam Jamison of Ellenwood and Katrina and Roger Studdard of Dalton; three sons and daughters-in-law, Jim and Linda Lester of Zebulon, Henry and Ginger Lester of Barnesville and John and Kim Lester of Byron; four sisters and three brothers-in-law, Helen Carns, Orian and Jesse Maddox and Vivian and Jim Lucky, all of Griffin, and Maude and Marshall Culpepper of Ocala, Fla.; a brother and sister-in-law, Rev. Dan and Bev Hunnicutt of Prattville, Ala.; three sisters-in-law, Dot Mayfield of Williamson and Lena Vessell and Geraldine Hunnicutt of Griffin; 12 grandchildren; and two nieces and nephews-in-law, Sara and Bob Burke of Griffin and Wanda and George Futch of Neal.
Services were held Monday, Jan. 22 at Neal Baptist Church. Rev. Jimmy Lester officiated. Burial was in Rehoboth Baptist Church Cemetery in Orchard Hill.

Alma Priscilla Slaughter
Alma Priscilla Slaughter, 82, of Jackson Avenue, Thomaston, diedSaturday, Jan. 27, 2001 at Upson Regional Medical Center.
A Monroe County native, Mrs. Slaughter lived most of her life in Thomaston. She was a spinner retired from Thomaston Mills after 20 years of service. She was a member of First Pentecostal Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Shirley Collins and Martha Fogarty, both of Thomaston; two brothers, James Driskell and Pete Driskell, both of Barnesville; a sister, Elsie McGouirk of Thomaston; a grandson, Tony Fogarty of Williamson; a granddaughter, Lacy Adams of Thomaston; and two great-grandchildren.
Services were held Monday, Jan. 29, at Coggins Funeral Home in Thomaston. Revs. Keith Adams and James Coogler officiated. Burial was in Southview Cemetery in Thomaston.
Mary Haygood Stocks
Mary Alice Haygood Stocks of Forsyth Street, Barnesville, diedWednesday, Jan. 24, 2001 at Monroe County Hospital in Forsyth.
A Forsyth native, Mrs. Stocks was the daughter of the late William Tyler and Eliza Frances Pierson Haygood and was the widow of James Ottis Stocks. She was an inspector retired from the William Carter Company and was the oldest member of Ramah Primitive Baptist Church. She lived in Barnesville most of her life.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, James Tyler and Lucy Stocks Sr.; seven grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.
Services were held Friday, Jan. 26 at Haisten-Martin Funeral Home. Rev. Pat McCoy officiated. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery in Barnesville.
William Larry Thornton
William Larry Thornton, 53, of Weavers Front Road, High Falls, in Butts County, diedWednesday, Jan. 24, 2001 at his residence.
A Spalding County native, Mr. Thornton was bornApril 8, 1947 to the late William Barney Thornton. He was retired from the trucking industry.
Survivors include his mother, Rosalie English Maloy of Milner; a sister, Lynn T. Griffin of Norcross; an aunt, Bessie Colwell of Griffin; two nephews, Mark and Tanner McCullough of Griffin; and a friend, Debbie Thompson of Jackson.
Services were held Friday, Jan. 26, at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church. Dr. Russell I. Bean officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Merrill Bishop
Merrill “Pop” Bishop, 73, of Griffin, diedSunday, Nov. 25, 2001, at Sunbridge Care and Rehab.
Mr. Bishop was bornFeb. 18, 1928 to the late William James and Annie Lee Womack Bishop and was preceded in death by a daughter, Teresa Bishop, six brothers and four sisters. He was a member of Faith Baptist Church and was a World War II Army veteran. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars post 5448 in Griffin and the Masonic Lodge.
Survivors include his wife, Louise Bishop; five sons and daughters-in-law, Danny and Hazel Conkle of Griffin, Jim and Deborah Bishop of Fayetteville, Ron and Donna Bishop of Milner, Harold and Christine Bishop of Douglasville and Darold and Rhonda Bishop of Dacula; two daughters and sons-in-law, Debbie and Kenny Granger of Byron and Lisa and Jay Perkins of Griffin; three stepsons and two stepdaughters-in-law, Mack Evans of Griffin, Walter and Becky Evans and Darnell and Faye Evans, all of Jacksonville; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Catherine Ross of Barnesville and Jacqueline and Leon Davis of Griffin; 17 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and friends Homer and Ruth Littlejohn of Griffin.
Services were held Wednesday, Nov. 28, at Faith Baptist Church. Burial was in Griffin Memorial Gardens.

Malcolm C. Davies
Malcolm C. “Josh” Davies, 88, of Griffin diedSunday, Nov. 25, 2001, at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta.
A Monroe County native, Mr. Davies was bornNov. 16, 1913. He was the retired owner of Wright’s Ice Cream Company and a member of Southside Baptist Church, where he had been a deacon, trustee and Sunday school teacher.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Virginia Benson Davies; a daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn and Tom Lewis of Tampa, Fla.; three sons and daughters-in-law, Malcolm Davies of Warner Robins, Jerry and Joyce Ann Davies of Griffin and Philip and Tina Davies of Barnesville; a brother, Lamar Davies of Gainesville; two sisters, Mary Doss of Bainbridge and Lynette Hutchison of Gainesville; six grandsons, Michael Lewis, Brian Davies, Christopher Lewis, Brantley Davies, Ryan Davies and Dan Davies; three granddaughters, Carolyn Davies, LaVonda Davies and Laura Masters; eight great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services were held Tuesday, Nov. 27, at McCullough Funeral Home in Griffin. Rev. Steven Davies, a nephew and pastor of Village Baptist Church in Destin, Fla., officiated.
