Mr. Elmer E. Link, 75, of Fitzgerald died Sunday, March 21, 2004 at his home.
Services were held at Paulk Funeral Home Chapel on Tuesday, March 23 at 2 p.m., with Rev. Bobby Stone officiating. Interment was private.
Mr. Link was born August 2, 1928 in Detroit, MI. He was a retired truck driver and former employee of Coachmen Industries in Indiana and Georgia. An avid fisherman, he was a member of the Bass Masters. Mr. Link was a member of the Moose Lodge.
Survivors include his mother-in-law, Charlotte Corey of Athens, MI; two daughters, Rhonda Woodruff of Tifton and Rita Caton of Ocilla; one son, Larry Link of Fitzgerald; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
One daughter, Ruth Link and one son, Edward Charles Link, preceded him in death.
Eloise Griffin Walker
Mrs. Eloise Griffin Walker, 84, of Fitzgerald died Monday, March 15, 2004 at Tift Regional Medical Center.
Services were held at Paulk Funeral Home Chapel in Fitzgerald on Wednesday, March 17 at 11 a.m., with Dr. Buddy Cooper and Rev. Steve Waldorf officiating. Interment was held in Evergreen Cemetery.
Mrs. Walker was born November 27, 1919 in Irwin County, daughter of the late John Jacob and Ophelia Hunter Griffin. She was a former sales lady at Halperin’s Department Store for many years and was a retired secretary with Fitzgerald Coca-Cola Bottling Company. Mrs. Walker was a member of Central United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women and the Friendship Sunday School class. She was a former member of the Eastern Star and a former board member for the American Cancer Society.
Survivors include her husband, Frank D. Walker of Fitzgerald; one son and daughter-in-law, David and Patricia Walker of Fitzgerald; one daughter and son-in-law, Frankie Joy and Ted Cowan of Fitzgerald; one grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Frank David II and Janet Walker of Macon; two step-grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Lula Walker Bennett
Mrs. Lula Walker Bennett, 85, of Fitzgerald died Saturday, March 20, 2004 at her home.
Services were held at Paulk Funeral Home Chapel in Fitzgerald on Monday, March 22 at 2 p.m., with Rev. Randell Daniell officiating. Interment was held in Evergreen Cemetery.
Music was provided by pianist, Patsy Spradlin and soloist, Jean Heninger.
Pallbearers were Mike Taylor, Jacob Longoria, Steve Linkswiler, Allen Morgan, Mark Bennett and Bobby Chasteen.
Honorary pallbearers were members of the Ben Hill County Sheriff’s Department and the Friendship Sunday School class.
Mrs. Bennett was born in Dodge County, daughter of the late Lee Walker and Mattie Mae Cook Walker. Her husband, Roger Marion Bennett, preceded her in death. Mrs. Bennett was a Gold Star Mother, having lost her son, George R. Bennett, in the Vietnam War.
Living in the community most of her life, she was a member of Central United Methodist Church and the Friendship Sunday School class. Mrs. Bennett was retired head housekeeper at Osceola Nursing Home. An avid seamstress, she was also a former kindergarten teacher at Jack and Jill Pre-School, a former Cub Scout den mother and Pilot Club member.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Donald M. and Penny Bennett of Fitzgerald; one daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Jack Frazier of Ozark, MO; brother, Leonard Walker of Waycross; five sisters, Ollie Mullis of Fitzgerald, Connell Tucker of Cordele, Wilmetta Warren of Albany, Evelyn McCullar of Valdosta, Ruby Evans of McRae; sister-in-law, Alice Mae Bennett of Savannah; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Nannie Mae White
Nannie Mae White, 78, of Shadydale died Friday, March 19, 2004 at her residence. She was born February 14, 1926 in Tift County, daughter of the late Lewis C. and Annie Lou Evans Carr. Formerly of Doraville, Mrs. White had been a resident of Shadydale for the past nine years. She retired as nurse from Emory Hospital, Atlanta in 1981.
Mrs. White was of the Baptist faith and enjoyed quilting, gardening, yard work, birds and animals.
Survivors include her husband, D. C. White of Shadydale; daughter, Mary Jane Kittrell of Covington; son and daughter-in-law, Carl and Jackie White of Macon; seven grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Ida Pearl and Rudene Gentry of Irwinville; brother and sister-in-law, Henry and Sara Carr of Quitman.
Graveside services were held Saturday, March 20 at 11 a.m. at Pleasant Hill Baptist Cemetery in Tucker, with Rev. Roy Kiser officiating.
Michael F. “Mike” Maye
Mr. Michael F. “Mike” Maye of Ellabelle, formerly of Fitzgerald and Ocilla, died Saturday, March 20, 2004 in Effingham County. He was 53. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, March 24 at Paulk Funeral Home Chapel in Fitzgerald with Elder Jimmy Chapman oficiating. Interment will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery.
Helen Floyd Hogan
Mrs. Helen Floyd Hogan, 84, of Fitzgerald died Thursday, March 11, 2004 at Dorminy Medical Center.
Services were held at Paulk Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday, March 13 at 2 p.m., with Rev. B. J. Funk and Rev. Kelly Brown officiating. Interment was held in Evergreen Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Larry Powell, Lynn Hope, Jim Casper, PeeWee Freeman, Rick Mathis and Chris Cook.
Music was provided by organist, Marty Smith and the duet of Blane and Barbara Jacobs.
Mrs. Hogan was born February 12, 1920 in Irwin County, daughter of the late Madison Early Floyd and Eula Jane Bender Floyd. She was preceded in death by her husband, Perry Hogan. Mrs. Hogan was a retired first-grade school teacher. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association, the Order of the Eastern Star and St. Peter’s United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Angela H. and Glenn Davis of Fitzgerald; three grandchildren, Jason Davis of Fitzgerald, Anna Beth Brooks of Augusta and Brett Davis of Fitzgerald; two sisters, Eleanor F. Bullington of Fitzgerald and Julia F. Williams of New Orleans, LA.
Evelyn Benson Paulk
Mrs. Evelyn Benson Paulk, 80, of Ocilla died Thursday, March 11, 2004 at Thomas Hospital, Fairhope, AL.
Services were held at Paulk Funeral Home Chapel, Ocilla on Saturday, March 13 at 11 a.m., with Elder Elliotte Tucker and Elder Ed McIntyre officiating. Interment was held in Henderson Chapel Cemetery, Irwin County.
Pallbearers were Marcus Paulk, Rick Gunby, Greg Gunby, Reggie Gibbs, Earl Gibbs and Keith Gibbs.
Honorary pallbearers were Judd Pusey, Jake Woods and O. L. Luke.
Music was provided by soloist, Susan Harper and keyboardist, Andi McWhorter.
Mrs. Paulk was born June 10, 1923 in Irwin County, daughter of the late Albert David Benson and Ada Padgett Benson. She lived in Daphne, AL for the past three years from Ocilla and was a former resident of Fitzgerald. Mrs. Paulk was a retired dietician, having worked at the Ben Hill County schools and Irwin County High School and was a former employee of A. S. Harris Department Store. She was a member of Frank Primitive Baptist Church in Irwin County.
Survivors include her husband, T. J. Paulk of Daphne, AL (formerly of Ocilla); daughter, Amelia P. Hammock of Daphne, AL; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; three sisters, Lizzie Mae Gunby and Mazie Hutto, both of Ocilla and Nora Morrison of Albany. Mrs. Paulk was preceded in death by one son, David Paulk.
Opal Spires Young
Mrs. Opal Spires Young, 65, of Fitzgerald died Saturday, March 13, 2004 at her home.
Services were held at Paulk Funeral Home Chapel in Fitzgerald on Monday, March 15 at 2 p.m., with Rev. Robert Watson and Rev. Larry Graham officiating. Interment was held in Big Creek Cemetery, Irwin County.
Pallbearers were Brian Young, Dennis Murray, John Spires, Matthew Young, Jerry Young and Bruce Young.
Music was provided by Larry Graham on guitar, Cyndie Watson on accordian and Michelle Watson on piano. They, along with Corliss Stephens, sang together.
Mrs. Young was born March 31, 1938 in Ben Hill County, daughter of the late Clarence Spires and Lillie Cook Farrow. She lived in the community most of her life and lived in Birmingham, AL for 18 years where she was a former bookkeeper for Weblow Corporation and a member of the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary and the Moose Lodge. Mrs. Young was a former hairdresser at Louise’s Beauty Shop in Fitzgerald.
Survivors include her son and daughter, C. L. “Pedro” Young and Diane Sims, both of Fitzgerald; five grandchildren, Deedee Stone, Kristy Reynolds, Kasey Graham, Carie Lynn Young and Philip Young; four great-grandchildren, Krista Young, Little Philip Young, Kaylea Stone and Chance Reynolds; one brother, Harrell Spires of St. Mary’s; three sisters, June Mincey of Plant City, FL; Elizabeth Grantham of Douglas and Tim Lariesa Gray of Fitzgerald. Mrs. Young was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald Talmadge Young.

Ginger K. Cobb Sneed Payne
Ms. Ginger K. Cobb Sneed Payne of Ocilla died Friday, February 27, 2004 from complications of leukemia. She was 50.
Ginger was born April 2, 1953, daughter of the late Elijah and Essie Mae Cobb. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Jimmy Lee and Marion and a sister, Annie Lee.
Ginger was a 1973 graduate of Irwin County High School. She was employed by Joseph Campbell Company and later employed with Irwin County Youth Detention.
She was a faithful member of Pleasant Grove First Baptist Church until her health began to fail.
Survivors include two sons, Harold Deon of Valdosta, Raheen Justin of Ocilla; one daughter, Crystal Ebony of Ocilla; three sisters, Doretha Harris of Ocilla, Susie Mae Richardson of Macon and Elizabeth (Oscar) Beacham of Orlando, FL; two grandchildren, Aiyana Raquel and Ahmad Deon; one aunt, Daisy Mae Ray of Lenox; a special nephew, Jimmy Cobb; adopted sisters, Vivian G. Reeves, Kaye C. Coffee and Carolyn S. Gaskin and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Services were held at Pleasant Grove First Baptist Church in Ocilla on Wednesday, March 3 at 11 a.m., with Rev. James Curtis officiating. Music was provided by the Pleasant Grove choir and soloists, Mrs. Thelma Harris and Mrs. Douglas Hollis, Jr.
Active pallbearers were Vivian G. Reeves, Kaye C. Coffee, Carolyn S. Gaskin, Jeremiah Cobb, Jimmy L. Hall, Terry Clark, Charles Andrews, Reginald Davis and Tyrone Smith.

Inetter B. Armour
Mrs. Inetter B. Armour of Ocilla died Tuesday, March 2, 2004. She was 70.
Mrs. Armour was born February 27, 1934, daughter of the late Homer and Estella Martin Burgess in Irwin County. She attended school in the Irwin County public school system. She was formerly employed with Modern Fibers
Mrs. Armour attended Mount Moriah Church of God Apostolic, Ocilla, where she served as an usher for many years. She was currently president of Pastor’s Aide. Her hobbies were cooking and gardening.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Jay Willie Burgess and one sister, Louise Walker.
Survivors include her husband, Walter James Armour; five children, Alberta (Edward) Watson, Estella K. Boone, Jimmy O. Burgess, all of Ocilla, Casey (Jerinda) Armour and Trenda (Tracy) Gaskins of Valdosta; 13 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Novella Burgess of Ocilla; mother-in-law, Essie Mae Armour of Ambrose; one sister-in-law, Esther Lean Burgess of Fitzgerald; four brothers-in-law, Willie P. (Dorothy) Armour of Ocilla, Boyce (Latrelle) Armour, Eddie (Virginia) Armour and Roy (Bernice) Armour, all of Ambrose; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Services were held at Pleasant Grove First Baptist Church in Ocilla on Saturday, March 6 at 1 p.m. with Elder Rosia Knighton, pastor of Mt. Moriah Church of God Apostolic, officiating.
Music was provided by soloist, Bro. Melvin McCutchen.
Active pallbearers were Bobby Armour, Dale Lastr, Eddie Armour, Tony Holmes, Wayne Armour and Stacey Armour.
Honorary pallbearers were grandsons.
Interment was held at New Ocilla Cemetery.

Lillie Johnson DeBerry
Mrs. Lillie J. DeBerry of Gladys died Saturday, February 21, 2004. She was 96.
Mrs. DeBerry was born September 1, 1907 in Coffee County, daughter of the late Andrew Johnson and Susie Vickers. She was married to the late John L. DeBerry for 60 years.
Sister DeBerry was a faithful member of Little Flock Baptist Church until her health began to weaken.
She was preceded in death by four children.
Survivors include eight children, Cleopris DeBerry, Kelly DeBerry, both of Ocilla; Rudean McGhee of Jacksonville, FL; Doretha Wilson of Miami, FL; Vivian DeBerry of Covington; Mary (James) Lester of Lumberton, NC; Alfreda DeBerry and Johnny DeBerry, both of Ocilla; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Services were held at Little Flock Baptist Church, Gladys on Wednesday, February 25 at 2 p.m., with Rev. Tommy Washington officiating.
Music was provided by the choir and soloist, Sister Clynell Gaskins.
Grandsons served as active and honorary pallbearers.
Interment was held in Luke Cemetery in Gladys.

Mr. George J. Dorminy, 82, of Fitzgerald died Friday, February 27, 2004 at Tift Regional Medical Center.
Services were held at the Paulk Funeral Home Chapel, Fitzgerald on Sunday, February 29 at 2 p.m., with Rev. Daniel Dean and Rev. Vernon Hughes officiating. Interment was held at Evergreen Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Cecil E. Smith, W. L. Smith, Danny Wells, Roosevelt Carter, Nathan Carter and Eddie Smith.
Honorary pallbearers were Cecil Kimbrell, Newton Sellers, Fred Smith, Stanford Day, Ronnie Day and Edward Day.

Mr. Dorminy was born November 12, 1921 in Ben Hill County to the late Elijah Jackson Dorminy and Mattie Verna Roberts Dorminy. He was a former body and fender repairman with Stone Motor Company, Mann Motors and Fitzgerald Motors. He was a former employee for Jack’s Cookie Company and drove the bus for the Ben Hill County Senior Citizen’s Center. Mr. Dorminy was an Army Veteran of World War II where he served in the Army Medical Corps and was a member of New Corinth Church. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Kathy Griswold.
Survivors include his wife, Virtis Young Dorminy of Fitzgerald; two granddaughters, Sonja Griswold Morris of Ocilla and Johanna Griswold of Fitzgerald; two great-grandchildren, Gabriel Morris and Grace Morris, both of Ocilla; three brothers, Martin Edward Dorminy of Reading, PA, Jack Dorminy, Jr. of Denton and Dwight Dorminy of Kilgore, TX and one sister, Mildred Pearce of High Springs, FL.

Kenny Nelson
Mr. Kenny Nelson, 37, of Fitzgerald died Sunday, February 29, 2004 at Dorminy Medical Center.
Memorial services will be held at the Paulk Funeral Home Chapel, Fitzgerald with Rev. Lester Anthony officiating.
Mr. Nelson was born December 18, 1966 in Miami, FL, son of Sheila Nelson and the late Murray Edward Nelson. He was raised in Fitzgerald and was a former turf manager at Hilton Head Golf Course in South Carolina. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, William and Ethel Palmer.
Survivors include four cildren, Valerie Story of Wahiawa, HI; Christopher Nelson, Kayla Nelson and Samantha Nelson, all of Savannah; mother, Sheila Nelson of Fitzgerald; sister, Reba Nelson of Valdosta; brother, Shawn Nelson of Fitzgerald; two half-sisters, Susan Hollingsworth of Fitzgerald and Darlene Branam of Irwin County and one half-brother, Michael Nelson of Miami, FL.

Cecil D. “Buck” Logerman
Mr. Cecil D. “Buck” Logerman of Wichita, KS died Tuesday, February 24, 2004. He was 77.
Mr. Logerman was retired from the U. S. Army and a cement mason.
Services were held at Resthaven Gardens of Memory, Wichita, KS, on Friday, February 27 at 3 p.m.
Survivors include his daughers and son-in-law, Edith Burk of Waukashea, WI; Thelma Gibbs of Ocilla and Brenda and Raymond Bothell of Tulsa, OK; brother and sister-in-law, Robert L. and Carol of Wichita, KS; sister, Lois Warnick of Wichita; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Geneva Gray Logerman; parents, Henry and Gladys Logerman; brother, Calvin Logerman and step-son, Charles Gibbs.
A memorial has been established with the American Diabetes Association.
