Cleavie Maddox Hudson
Mrs. Cleavie Maddox Hudson, 85, of Ocilla died Tuesday, May 11, 2004 at Palemon Gaskin Nursing Home.
Services were held at Ocilla United Methodist Church on Thursday, May 13 at 2 p.m., with Rev. Jim Osborn officiating. Interment was held in the Ocilla Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Bobby Dix, Orman Paulk, Weyman Evans, Jimmy Mixon, Larry Young and Walter Tyler.
Music was provided by organist, Jean Dent.
Mrs. Hudson was born April 20, 1919 in Dodge County, daughter of the late Walter and Lavonia Kitchens Maddox and was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie “Buddy” Hudson; two children, Charlene Hudson, David Wayne “Pete” Hudson, one sister and four brothers. She was a homemaker and lived in the community most of her life. Mrs. Hudson was a member of the Ocilla United Methodist Church and the Methodist Guild. She was also a member of the Home Demonstration Club and Osceola Chapter #431 of the Order of Eastern Star.
Survivors include three children, Annelle H. Paulk, Linda Hudson and Harry Hudson, all of Ocilla; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
James David Elixson
Mr. James David Elixson, 66, of Irwin County died Wednesday, May 12, 2004 at Irwin County Hospital.
Services were held at Paulk Funeral Home Chapel, Ocilla on Saturday, May 15 at 4 p.m., with Rev. Tracy Clements officiating. Music was provided by Rev. Tracy Clements, Lynn Clements and Pat Stringer. Pallbearers were Donald Paulk, Donnie Clark, Otis Hester and Harold Walker.
Interment was held in the Ocilla Cemetery.
Mr. Elixson was born March 11, 1938 in Sanford, FL, son of Lillie Mae Hancock Edge and the late Samuel Charles Elixson. He lived in the community for the past year from South Charleston, OH. Mr. Elixson was a self-employed painting contractor. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Ocilla.
Survivors include his mother, Lillie Mae Edge of Irwin County; four sisters, Charlene Tatum of Irwinville, Patricia Cherry of Irwin County, Charlotte Harper of Macon and Bonnie Jones of Goodlettsville, TN; two step-grandchildren, Michael and Jeffery Lowe of South Charleston, OH; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Linda Lowe Elixson and one brother, Manuel Edge.
Ruby M. Henderson
Mrs. Ruby M. Henderson, 94, of Irwin County died Friday, May 14, 2004 at Osceola Nursing Home.
Services were held at Big Creek Baptist Church, Irwin County on Monday, May 17 at 11 a.m., with Rev. Tommy Land, Jr. and Rev. Ed Reeves officiating. Interment was held in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Bailey Martin, Rayburn Harper, Greg Brown, Gaston McDaniel, Greg Hobbs, Wayne Hobbs.
Music was provided by pianist, Ann Martin; soloists, Judy Griffin and Susan Hobbs.
Mrs. Henderson was born November 8, 1909 in Irwin County, daughter of the late Fort Jasper and Sarah Elmina Mann McDaniel. She was a housewife and the oldest living member of Big Creek Baptist Church.
Survivors include her son, Carroll Henderson of Irwin County; one daughter, Christine DeBusk of Inverness, FL; 11 gandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-granchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman J. Henderson and one son, Herman Jesse Henderson, Jr.
Bonnie McGee Kitchens
Mrs. Bonnie McGee Kitchens, 73, of Irwin County died Monday, May 10, 2004 at her home.
Services were held at Ocilla Primitive Baptist Church on Wednesday, May 12 at 2 p.m., with Elder Otis McGee and Elder Tommy McGee officiating. Interment was held in the Irwinville Cemetery.
Pallbearers were David McGee, Michael McGee, Paul McKie, Brad Faircloth, Buddy McGee, Timothy McGee, Wesley McGee, Chad Faircloth and Mike Faircloth. Honorary pallbearers were Sherry Southern, Frances McGee Brown, Sandra Faircloth, Tracy McKie, Linda VanAuken, Pat Lamon, Shirley Hankins, Brenda Nelting and the Blue-Gray Community Hospice employees.
Mrs. Kitchens was born May 9, 1931 in Irwinville, daughter of the late John and Sallie Burch McGee. She lived in the community most all of her life and was a former resident of Tift County. Mrs. Kitchens helped her husband farm and was a former employee of Shiloh Personal Care Home, Hunter’s Barbeque and Weavers Milling Company. She was a member of the Ocilla Primitive Baptist Church and the Ladies Circle.
Survivors include her brother, Elder Otis McGee of Ocilla; two step-children, John H. Allen of Holder, FL and Marie Allen of Dunnellon, FL; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews including Sandra Faircloth of Cordele and Sherry Southern of Bowling Green, KY. Mrs. Kitchens was preceded in death by her husband, Onree J. C. Kitchens; one son, Donnie Ray Kitchens; four brothers and one sister.
Mildred (Sister) Wright
Mrs. Mildred (Sister) Wright, 79, of Fitzgerald died Tuesday, May 11, 2004 at Dodge County Hospital, Eastman.
Services were held at Paulk Funeral Home Chapel, Fitzgerald on Friday, May 14 at 11 a.m., with Bro. Robert “Cricket” Watson, Bro. Bobby Hiers and Bro. Larry Graham officiating. Interment was held in Mystic Cemetery.
Music was provided by Bro. Larry Graham and Cindy Watson.
Pallbearers were Pete Oden, Lewis Fussell, Lewis Fussell, Jr., Bill Grantham, Donnie Young, Pedro Young and Bobby Grantham.
Mrs. Wright was born September 18, 1924 in Fitzgerald, daughter of the late James Perce and Mattie Lou Phillips Young. She was a homemaker and a former employee of Tice Yarn Company. Mrs. Wright was of the Baptist Purity Church and an avid cook.
Survivors include her husband, Malgram R. “Sam” Wright, Fitzgerald; one daughter, Judy Lynn Pope of Warner Robins; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; three brothers, Buck and Melvin Young, both of Fitzgerald and Marvin Young of Tifton; three sisters, Gladys Fussell and Evelyn Walsh, both of Fitzgerald and Joan Grantham of Tifton. She was preceded in death by two sons, Johnny and James Lynn, three brothers and one sister.
Irene Cleghorn Trawick
Mrs. Irene Cleghorn Trawick entered into eternal rest May 6, 2004 in Boca Raton, FL after an extended illness. She was born in Irwin County on November 9, 1917, daughter of the late Nelson H. Cleghorn and Evelyn Pauline Cleghorn.
Mrs. Trawick was a resident of Jacksonville, FL for many years prior to moving to Boca Raton, FL. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and a nurse for many years.
She is survived by one son, J. Herman Dance and his wife, Esther; a sister, Mrs. Fred (Mildred) Scribner of Albion, MI; two nephews, Carl Scribner, Kenneth Scribner and a niece, Mrs. Bo Rish (Paula).
Graveside services were held at Riverside Memorial Park in Jacksonville, FL on Tuesday, May 11.
Dowe Strickland
Mr. Dowe Strickland, 48, of Fitzgerald died Thursday, May 13, 2004 at his home.
Services were held at the Paulk Funeral Home Chapel, Fitzgerald on Sunday, May 16 at 2 p.m., with Rev. Jack Perrin officiating. Interment was held in Evergreen Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Wesley Meeker, Ray Meeker, Eddie Smith, Jamie Swaynos, Donnie Ludington, Bud Smith, Glenn Coalson and Robert Wayne Finch.
Mr. Strickland was born November 25, 1955 in Fitzgerald, son of Iris Williams Strickland and the late Homer Strickland. He lived in the community all of his life and was a former brick mason and construction worker.
Survivors include his daughter, Jessica L. Strickland of Fitzgerald; three grandchildren, Ariel Rains, Kevin Rains and Erik Strickland, all of Fitzgerald; mother, Iris Strickland of Fitzgerald; one sister, Lynn Sumner of Irwin County; grandmother, Annie Bell Williams of Fitzgerald; companion, Trellis Smith of Fitzgerald; nephew and niece, Brian Sumner of Irwin County and Kerri Eckstrand of San Diego, CA. He was preceded in death by his wife, Janet Cook Strickland.
Wayne Purvis
Mr. Wayne Purvis, 60, of Gladys community in Berrien County died Tuesday, May 4, 2004 at Tift Regional Medical Center.
Funeral Mass was held at St. Anne’s Catholic Church, Alapaha on Friday, May 7 at 10 a.m., with Father Alfonzo Gutierrez officiating. Interment followed in Fletcher Cemetery, Alapaha.
Pallbearers were Joe Portier, Troy Spencer, Donald Woody, Jim Purvis, Brent Roberts, Brian Stone, Lamar Purvis, Scott Mobley and John Wayne Griffin.
Music was provided by James T. Griffin, Jac Nugent and Alecia Griffin.
Readings were given by Charles Griffin and Kathy Griffin.
Mr. Purvis was born November 14, 1943 in Irwin County, son of Myrtle Purvis and the late Homer Purvis. He lived in the community most of his life. Mr. Purvis was a barber and operated Purvis Package Store in Gladys. He was a member of St. Anne’s Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Griffin Purvis; two sons and daughters-in-law, Wayne, Jr. and Katherleen Purvis and Michael and Melinda Purvis; mother, Myrtle Purvis; two grandchildren, Chris and Kathy Purvis, all of the Gladys community; one brother, Jimmy K. Purvis of Albany.

Thelma Worth Mixon
Mrs. Thelma Worth Mixon, 87, of Fitzgerald died Sunday, May 2, 2004 at Palemon Gaskin Nursing Home, Ocilla.
Services were held at the Paulk Funeral Home Chapel, Fitzgerald on Saturday, May 8 at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Kyle Taft officiating. Interment was held in Brushy Creek Cemetery.
Mrs. Mixon was born December 20, 1916 in Lakeland. She lived in Fitzgerald most of her life and was a former resident of Heritage Manor in Ocilla and a former resident of Douglas. Mrs. Mixon was a former nurses aide at the Ben Hill County Hospital, the Irwin County Hospital and a former lunchroom lady at Fitzgerald High School. She attended the Fitzgerald Church of God.
Survivors include four daughters, Betty Douglas of Ocilla, Martha Ellen Langley of Albany, Amelia “Midge” Adams of Villa Rica and Irma Lee Royals of Axson; two sons, Donald W. Mixon of Linwood, WA and Jimmy E. Mixon of Waterloo; 18 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren; one sister, Belle Owen of Okeechobee, FL. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lunzy Mixon and one son, Gene Lamar Mixon.

William Curtis Vickers
Mr. William Curtis Vickers, age 95, of Ambrose passed away on Friday, April 30, 2004 at the Coffee Regional Medical Center in Douglas. Mr. Vickers, a native of Coffee County, was born March 28, 1909, son of the late Clayton Arthur and Lillie Paulk Vickers. He was a retired farmer and the widower of the late Mollye Swilley Vickers.
Survivors include his son, Swilley Vickers of Ambrose; daughters, Simone Cross of Douglas, Pat Rickert of Conyers and Brenda Darwin of Jacksonville FL; brother, C. A. Vickers of Wray; grandchildren, Curt Vickers, Randy Vickers, Tony Cross, Eric Rickert, Brandi Darwin, and great-grandson Micajah Curtis Vickers.
Services were held at New Hope Baptist Church on Sunday May 2 at 2 p.m., with Rev. Robert Merritt and Rev. George Carroll Paulk officiating. Music was provided by soloist, June Merritt, with Hope Hall, pianist. Graveside services with Rev. Dale Smith officiating and burial followed at the New Hope Church Cemetery near Ambrose.
Active pallbearers were Randy Vickers, Curt Vickers, Eric Rickert, Tony Cross, Dudley Vickers, Jimmy Ray Vickers, Vicky Vickers and Kirby Vickers. Honorary pallbearers were Aldine Merritt, Al Merritt, Tommy Sheppard, John Guilford, Dennis Paulk, Warn Fowler, Wesley Vickers, Dr. Krishnan Chalam, George Arthur McKinnon, Larry McKinnon, Kenneth Burnam and Rufus Paulk.

Clarence E. “Bubber” Sherrill
Clarence E. “Bubber” Sherrill, 79, of Dawson died Thursday, May 6, 2004 at the Dawson Manor.
The funeral service was held at Kimbrell-Stern on Saturday, May 8 at 3:30 p.m. with Rev. Dale Thornton officiating. Interment was held at Spring Hill Baptist Church Cemetery in Irwin County.
A native of Fitzgerald, Mr. Sherrill had lived in Albany since 1948, moving to Dawson in 1998. He and his wife had been members of Avalon United Methodist Church since it started in a tent on Whitney Avenue. He was retired from Southern Bell as a cable maintenance supervisor after 40 years and had previously worked with General Telephone before moving to Albany.
He was a graduate of Fitzgerald High School, a member of the Elk’s Club and the Telephone Pioneers. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was known as “PaPa” by his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Dr. Lisa Fridell.
Survivors include his wife, Florene Tucker Sherrill of Dawson; two daughters, Lawanda Sherrill Friddell and her husband, Tom, of Dawson; Leanne Sherrill Taylor and her husband, Jimmy S., of Montezuma; three grandchildren, Brandi Friddell, Leslie Brewer and Lynn F. Chavez, three great-grandchildren, Anna Lisa, Michael and Amelia Grace Chavez; a sister, Juanita Deese of Fitzgerald and several nieces and nephews.

D. C. White
Mr. D. C. White, 81, of Shadydale died May 7, 2004 at his home. Born May 17, 1922 in Gwinnett County, he was the son of the late Milligan M. and Vinnie Lee Baugham White of Irwin County, and the widower of the late Nannie Mae Carr White, originally from Irwin County. Formerly of Doraville, Mr. White had lived in Shadydale for almost nine years and loved farming and gardening.
Survivors include his daughter, Mary Jane Kittrell of Covington; son and daughter-in-law, Carl and Jackie White of Macon; seven grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; sisters, Irene Anderson and Mildred Rogers, both of Fitzgerald, Betty Avery of Sylvester, Pearl Hall of Atlanta and Minnie Guin of Eastman.
A graveside service was held at Pleasant Hill Baptist Cemetery in Tucker on Saturday, May 8 at 3 p.m., with Rev. Roy Kiser officiating.

Roy E. Howell
Mr. Roy E. Howell, 55, of Ocilla died Sunday, June 27, 2004 at his home.
Services were held at the Paulk Funeral Home Chapel, Ocilla on Tuesday, June 29 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Huey Nichols and Rev. Pat Hogan officiating. Interment was held in New Valley Grove Cemetery, Irwin County.
Mr. Howell was born December 27, 1948 in Irwin County, son of the late Velma Myrick and E. Grady Howell. He was a graduate of McArthur High School in Hollywood, FL. A former resident of Dade County, FL, Mr. Howell moved back to Ocilla in 1990. He was a U. S. Army veteran of the Vietnam war where he received the Purple Heart. He was a heavy equipment operator for the Irwin County Road Department. A carpenter in Florida for many years, Mr. Howell built high rise buildings. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife, Beverly Howell of Ocilla; three stepdaughters, Annissia Byrd, Vicky Carter and Rhonda Willis, all of Pelham; one sister, Jacquelyn Dorta of Juniper, FL; 15 grandchildren, two nephews and one niece.

Louise Mable Tripp
Mrs Louise Mable Tripp, 93, of Woodville, FL, died Monday, June 21, 2004 at Tallahassee, FL.
Mrs. Tripp was born in Monks Corner, SC and was a resident of Leon County since 1953. She was a member of Woodville First Baptist Church. She was a homemaker and prayer warrior.
Services were held at Woodville First Baptist Church on Thursday, June 24 at 11:30 a.m with burial in Woodville Cemetery.
Survivors include one son, Joe Brown Tripp, Jr. and wife, Claire, of Bethesda, MD; three daughters, Dorothy E. Davis of Ocilla, Doris L. Neal and husband, Marion, of Charleston, SC; Mary Jo Levins and husband, John W., of Woodville, FL; eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Timothy Fowler
Mr. Timothy Fowler, 50, of Irwinville died Thursday, June 17, 2004 at the home of his brother.
Graveside services were held at Irwinville Cemetery on Saturday, June 19 at 11 a.m., with Rev. Harris Johnson and Carol Snow officiating.
Pallbearers were Nathan Carter, Michael Fowler, Jerry Cottrell, Tony Cottrell, Jimmy Gray, Chris Gray, Jason Gray and Nelson Johnson.
Mr. Fowler was born February 10, 1954 in Columbus, son of the late Eugene and Mary Clide Josey Fowler. He was a retired lab technician with Heatcraft in Tifton and a former employee of Rainbow Irrigation Systems. Mr. Fowler was a member of Northside Baptist Church in Tifton.
Survivors include his brother and sister-in-law, Jeff and Marlene Fowler and two nephews, Adam and Travis Fowler, all of Fitzgerald.
