Mary B. Sherman
Mary B. Sherman, 75, of Ocilla died Sunday, July 25, 2004 at Flint River Community Hospital, Montezuma.
Services were held at the Paulk Funeral Home Chapel, Ocilla on Thursday, July 29 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Clayton Dowd and Rev. Charlie Simpson officiating. Interment was held in Ocilla Cemetery.
Music was provided by pianist, Wendy Dowd and a duet of Rev. Clayton and Wendy Dowd.
Pallbearers were Wallace Peacock, Lavell Peacock, Ray Booth, Austin Gragg, Allen Arowood, Lanny Smith.
Mrs. Sherman was born August 12, 1928 in Monroe, NC, daughter of the late Grover Cleveland and Nellie Petty Broome. She lived in Montezuma for the past three years from Ocilla. Mrs. Sherman attended the Ocilla Church of God.
Survivors include her brother, J. R. Broome of Lake Park; two sisters, Ola Mae Pacetti of Jacksonville, FL and Magdalene (Bill) Volner of Montezuma; sister-in-law, Nellie Broome of Ocilla; many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Sherman and twin sister, Martha Purvis.

Mary Evelyn Melton
Mrs. Mary Evelyn Melton of Fitzgerald died July 25, 2004. She was 74.
Mrs. Melton was born July 27, 1929 in Fitzgerald, oldest child of the late Robert Melton, Sr. and the late Cleo Taylor Melton.
A graduate of the 12th grade, she worked as a presser and sewing machine operator and folder in a sewing factor until her retirement. Early in her career she worked in New York and Miami, FL. She loved to spend time with family and friends. She was very active in the lives of her grandchildren as a baby sitter, spiritual teacher and more. She traveled extensively with her children to many religious events, conferences, camp meetings, youth federations and basketball games.
Survivors include her siblings, Robert Melton, Jr., Delores Melton Corbett and Archie W. Melton, Sr.; two children, Joel Allison (Kim Renee) Melton and Iris Vanessa Melton; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three nieces, seven nephews and a host of cousins, best friends, Harriet Jean Wilcox, Ramona Perry, Geraldine Brown, Corine Rutherford and Ida O’Neal, other relatives and devoted friends.
She was a member of Trinity Temple Church Seventh-Day Adventist, Fitzgerald where she served as a deaconess, senior choir member, assistant church treasurer, Sabbath School secretary, chair of the hospitality committee and an usher for many years.
Services were held at Trinity Temple Church, Thursday, July 29 at 3 p.m., with Rev. I. B. Harmon as program facilitator.
Music was provided by pianists, Frederick Thomas and Isom ”Sonny” Harmon III, organist, Charles Clark and the combined choir.
Pallbearers were Class of 1991 and friends of the family.
Honorary pallbearers were grandson and nephews.
Interment was held at Evergreen Cemetery.
Henderson Memorial Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
Eloyce Maddox Brantley
Mrs. Eloyce Maddox Brantley, 80, of Ocilla died Monday, July 26, 2004 at Tift Regional Medical Center.
Graveside services were held at the Ocilla Cemetery, Wednesdaqy, July 28 at 4 p.m., with Rev. Gerald Thomas officiating.
Pallbearers were Aldene Tyson, Jack Gray, Blake Brantley, Donald W. Tyson, Jr., Kim Paul and Tom Haggerty.
Mrs. Brantley was born July 11, 1924 in Irwin County, daughter of the late Coy and Mary Gray Maddox. She lived in the community all of her life. Mrs. Brantley was retired Head Start Program Director and Pre-K school teacher. She was a member of the Ocilla Baptist Church and Osceola Chapter #432 Order of Eastern Star.
Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Faith B. and Donald W. Tyson, Sr. of Tifton; son and daughter-in-law, Norman L. and Linda Brantley of Ocilla; daughter, Mary Ann Bryan of Cornelia; son and daughter-in-law, Lester H. and Susan Brantley of Sumner; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; sister, Molly Paul of Ocilla. Mrs. Brantley was preceded in death by her husband, Lester L. Brantley; a sister, Eunice Haynie and two brothers, Coy W. and John Henry Maddox.

Angeline Wright
Ms. Angeline Wright died Saturday, July 24, 2004. Memorial services were held for Ms. Wright, a long-time resident of Osceola Nursing Home, on Friday, July 30, 2004 at 7:30 p.m. at Henderson Memorial Chapel.
Survivors include three children, Valerie Wright of Eastman, Dorothy Ferguson of Tampa, FL and L. HJ. Wright of Toledo, OH and one sister, Leila McDonald of Dublin.
Eddie Elrod
Rev. Eddie Elrod, 47, of Fitzgerald died Monday, August 2, 2004 at his residence.
Services will be held at the Paulk Funeral Home Chapel, Fitzgerald on Wednesday, August 4 at 4 p.m., with Alex Diakogiannis, Steve Griffin and Rev. Earlie Holt officiating. Interment will be held in Evergreen Cemetery.
Rev. Elrod was born June 18, 1957 in Gadsden, AL, son of the late Richard Elrod and June Bradford Nunn. He lived in the community most of his life. Rev. Elrod was the pastor of Babbs Pentecostal Holiness Church in Hawkinsville, a former pastor for the Church of Unity, Taft Lane Baptist Church and a former truck driver for Delco-Remy Battery Company.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy S. Elrod of Fitzgerald; children, Rebecca Elrod Harper, Lee Elrod, both of Fitzgerald, Brent Howell of Lilly, Leslie Richardson, Angel Flinchum and Leslie Flinchum, all of Fitzgerald; three grandchildren; brother and sister, Ricky Elrod and Pam Williamson, both of Fitzgerald; step-father, Bill Nunn of Fitzgerald.

Ruth T. Thomas
Mrs. Ruth T. Thomas, 67, of Fitzgerald died Monday, July 26, 2004 at Welstar Kennestone Hospital in Kennesaw.
Memorial services were held at Paulk Funeral Home Chapel, Fitzgerald, on Thursday, July 29 at 4 p.m. with Rev. Gerald Thomas and Rev. Tom Braziel officiating.
Music was provided by organist, Marty Smith with a duet by Blane and Barbara Jacobs. A congregational song was led by Blane Jacobs. Eulogy was given by Tammy Moore
Mrs. Thomas was born March 1, 1937 in Phil Campbell, AL, daughter of the late O. M. and Lois Phillips Thomas. She was a 1955 graduate of Fitzgerald High School, attended ABAC and graduated from Albany State University at the age of 60 with a degree in special education and taught school in Turner County, Irwin County and Coffee County. Mrs. Thomas was a member of the First Baptist Church in Fitzgerald and the Connie Sexton Sunday School class. She was a member of the Pilot Club and an avid gardener.
Survivors include her husband, Gerry Thomas of Fitzgerald; two daughters, Randi Karen Paulk of Powder Springs and Leslie Marie Heath of Fitzgerald; one step-son, Allen Heath of Pasgah, AL; two sisters, Louise T. Guardia and Dixie T. Hargrove, both of Fitzgerald; one brother, James Phillip Thomas of Jacksonville, FL; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son, Mark Paulk.

Evelyn Young Walsh
Mrs. Evelyn Young Walsh, 77, of Fitzgerald died Saturday, July 31, 2004 at Fitzgerald Nursing Home.
Services were held at Mystic Baptist Church, Irwin County on Tuesday, August 3 at 11 a.m., with Bro. Bobby Hiers and Bro. Richard Joyner officiating. Interment was held in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Walsh was born January 21, 1927 in Ben Hill County, daughter to the late James P. and Mattie Lou Phillips Young. She was a homemaker and a former employee of SWS Garment and Irwin County Hospital. Mrs. Walsh had lived most of her life in Ben Hill County and was a member of the Abbeville Baptist Purity Church. She was an avid gardener caring for her yard and flowers. Mrs. Walsh always enjoyed helping others.
Survivors include her husband, Warren G. “Shorty” Walsh of Fitzgerald; son, Herman “Pete” Oden of Fitzgerald; daughter, Linda Adkisson of Fitzgerald; two step-sons, Gary Walsh of Redstone Arsenal, AL and Tony Walsh of Atlanta; three step-daughters, Debbie Kitchens of Camron, NC; Lisa Reynolds of Atlanta and Terry Clark of Fitzgerald; two grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; 13 step-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; three brothers, Leon “Buck” Young and Melvin Young, both of Fitzgerald and Marvin Young of Tifton and two sisters, Gladys Fussell of Fitzgerald and JoAnn Grantham of Tifton. She was preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers.

Sarah Aquilla Cunningham
Mrs. Sarah Aquilla Cunningham, 80, of Ocilla died July 14, 2004.
She was born August 22, 1923 in Irwin County, daughter of the late Daniel H. and Sarah Louise Boone.
She attended Pleasant Hill School and Ocilla High School.
At an early age she joined Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. She met and married Mack C. Cunningham. To this union seven children were born. Her husband and one son, Mack C. Cunningham, Jr. preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by one sister, Maryland Dopson and three brothers, Eddie, Calvin and Sam Boone.
Survivors include her children, Magalene Cunningham, Albertha Rivers (Will) of Ocilla, Vivian Pittman (Reginald), Kathleen Doberson (Charlie), Benjamin Cunningham (Bernice) and Waymond Cunningham (Amy), all of Fitzgerald; one sister, Dorothy L. Bouie (James) of Winter Haven, FL; one brother, Daniel Boone (Emma); two sisters-in-law, Mary Boone and Washie Cunningham; one brother-in-law, Willie Cunningham; 24 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Services were held at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church on Monday, July 19 at 1 p.m., with Rev. Herbert Coney officiating.
Music was provided by the choir.
Active pallbearers were Bobby Boone, Donald Boone, Edward Cunningham, Alfred Mike, Rodrick Boone and Daniel Dopson.
Honorary pallbearers were O. C. Cunningham, Johnny Cunningham, Kenneth Boone, Charlie Dopson, Charlie Doberson and Frank Dopson.
Interment was held in Ocilla Cemetery.
Kathleen Nelson Dorminy
Mrs. Kathleen Nelson Dorminy, 88, of Ocilla died Sunday, July 25, 2004 at Tift Regional Hospital.
Services were held at Ocilla Baptist Church on Tuesday, July 27 at 11 a.m., with Rev. Gerald Thomas officiating and eulogy by Al Dorminy.
Music was provided by violinist, Sterling Dorminey and congregational singing. Pianist was Barbara Jacobs and soloist was Blane Jacobs.
Pallbearers were Ken Sutton, Cliff Tankersley, Gene Arnold, Alan Gray, Keith Sims, Wyndall Walters.
Honorary pallbearers were Hannah-Lydia Sunday School class and Sewing Club.
Interment was held in Enigma Cemetery.
Mrs. Dorminy was born June 15, 1916 in Pulaski County, daughter of the late George Albert Nelson and Nettie Stephens Nelson. Mrs. Dorminy was a homemaker and former school teacher in Perry and Pulaski County. She attended Georgia State College for Women and the University of Georgia. An active member of the Ocilla Baptist Church, Mrs. Dorminy was a member of the Hannah-Lydia Sunday School class, taught Sunday School at the church, local nursing homes and personal care homes. She was a volunteer for the Blue-Gray Community Hospice and a member of the Sewing Club. She was awarded Volunteer of the Year from Blue-Gray Community Hospice several years.
Survivors include a daughter, Phyllis D. Nappier of Ocilla; son, A. C. “Al” (Betsy) Dorminy, Jr. of Atlanta; two grandchildren, Eric (Joy) Nappier of Jacksonville, FL and Kathleen Grace Dorminy of Atlanta; one great-granddaughter, Maria Lockerby Nappier of Jacksonville, FL and one sister, Tommie Hunt of Perry. She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Clayton “A.C.” Dorminy, one brother and one sister.

T. H. Hogan
T. H. Hogan, 57, of Fitzgerald died Monday, July 19, 2004 at the Irwin County Hospital.
Services were held at Big Creek Missionary Baptist Church, Irwin County on Friday, July 23 at 2 p.m., with Rev. James Hubbard officiating. Interment was held in the church cemetery.
Music was provided by Janice Young. Eulogy was given by Jennifer Rowell.
Pallbearers were Lacy Hogan, Travis Hogan, Mark Lavender, Jonathan Glass, Michael B. Glass, W. H. Carroll III.
Mr. Hogan was born August 18, 1946 in Ocilla, son of the late Robert Thomas and Eva Mae Griffin Hogan. He lived in Fitzgerald most of his life and served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War era. Mr. Hogan retired after 26 years as a truck driver, 19 of those years he worked for United Farm Tools. He was a member of the Church of the Nazarene, Fitzgerald.
Survivors include his wife, Candy Hogan of Fitzgerald; two daughters, Melissa Hogan and Crystal Kay Odom, both of Fitzgerald; one step-son, William H. Rowell, Jr. of Yulee, FL; nine grandchildren; three brothers, Jimmy Hogan of Thomasville, Bobby Hogan of Fitzgerald and Billy Hogan of Tifton; five sisters, Betty Dickson, Dale Glass, Kathy McDaniel and Shirley Hogan, all of Fitzgerald and Carolyn Hall of Nicholls.
Wesley Troy Walters
Mr. Wesley Troy Walters, 46, of Ocilla died Sunday, October 3, 2004 at the Irwin County Hospital, Ocilla.
Services will be held at Ocilla Baptist Church on Wednesday, October 6 at 2 p.m., with Rev. Robert Couey and Rev. Gerald Thomas officiating. Interment will follow at Paulk Cemetery on Evergreen Drive.
Mr. Walters was born June 2, 1958 in Fitzgerald, to Betty Joyce Tankersley Walters and the late Lorie Vinson Walters. He was a cattle farmer and farmer. He was a 1976 graduate of Irwin County High School, where he played football and baseball for the Irwin County Indians. Mr. Walters attended the University of Georgia where he played football for the Georgia Bulldogs. For many years he coached with the Irwin County Little League.
Mr. Walters was a member of the Ocilla Baptist Church, but he attended Fellowship Baptist Church in Fitzgerald. He was a member of the Georgia Cattleman’s Association and was a wildlife enthusiast.
Survivors include his wife, Dana Dunn Walters of Ocilla; five children, Mandy Walters Black and her husband, Jim, of Atlanta; Wesley Lorie Walters and his wife, Bridget, of Ocilla; Jake Vickers Walters of Ocilla; Natalee Suzanne Walters of Ocilla; Abbee Dunn Walters of Ocilla; granddaughter, Preslee Lorie Walters of Ocilla; mother, Betty Joyce Tankersley Walters of Ocilla; one brother, Wyndall Lorie Walters and his wife, Rhonda, of Ocilla; sister, Lavonda Walters Womack and her husband, Roger, of Tifton.

Hoke S. Gentry
Mr. Hoke S. Gentry, 94, of Lands Crossing community, Irwin County, died Sunday, October 3, 2004 at his residence.
Services were held at Big Creek Baptist Church on Tuesday, October 5 at 2 p.m., with Rev. John Gibbs, Sr. and Rev. L. A. Pate officiating. Interment was held in the church cemetery.
Mr. Gentry was born August 22, 1910 in Abba, son of the late Lumpkin Gentry and Ophelia Mauldin Gentry. He was a retired farmer and a Mason.
Survivors include one son, Marvin H. Gentry ; one grandson, Kirk Gentry and one great-granddaughter, Rachel Gentry, all of Lands Crossing community, Irwin County. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Lee Butts Gentry; one son, Glenn L. Gentry and one grandson, Eric W. Gentry.

Jackie Steverson
Mr. Jackie Steverson, 58, of Fitzgerald died Monday, September 27, 2004 in Milledgeville.
Services were held at the Paulk Funeral Home Chapel in Fitzgerald on Thursday, September 30 at 2 p.m., with Rev. Wilburn Wiley officiating. Interment was held in Evergreen Cemetery. Mr. Steverson was born January 17, 1946 in Ocilla, son of Sue Annie Branch and the late Charlie Steverson. He lived in the community most of his life. Mr. Steverson attended Christian Tabernacle in Fitzgerald. He was a loving father and grandfather.
Survivors include his two daughters, Dorothy Rathburn and Wanda Rathburn, both of Fitzgerald; five grandchildren; mother, Sue Annie Branch of Fitzgerald; sister, Barbara Shealey of Fitzgerald; brothers, Ikie Steverson of Moultrie, Royce Steverson of Ocilla, Harvey, Thomas and Elvis Steverson, all of Fitzgerald.

Claudia P. Evans
Mrs. Claudia P. Evans, 86, of Fitzgerald died Sunday, October 3, 2004 at her residence.
Services were held at Central United Methodist Church on Tuesday, October 5 at 11 a.m., with Rev. Steve Waldorf officiating. Interment followed in Evergreen Cemetery.
Mrs. Evans was born February 20, 1918 in Irwin County, daughter of the late John Gordon Paramoure and Cora Lee Harrell Paramoure. She was a graduate of Ocilla High School in 1936, Andrew College in Cuthbert and she attended Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville. Mrs. Evans taught school at Irwinville, Lynwood and the Sunshine Kindergarten.
She served as the Deputy Tax Collector for Ben Hill County under her husband, J. Frank Evans, and as the Tax Collector and Commissioner for 16 years after his death.
An active member of Central United Methodist Church, she was a member of the UMW, the Silver Foxes and the Jesse Thompson Sunday School class. Mrs. Evans was a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, the Daughters of the American Revolution and a Red Cross Bloodmobile volunteer.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Patti Evans of Marietta; daughter and son-in-law, Lisa E. and Danny Young of Fitzgerald; four grandchildren, Jessica Deese of Valdosta, Melanie Herrington of Statesboro, Francie Barry of Marietta and Elliott Evans of Marietta, one brother, Waldo Paramoure of Ocilla. Her husband, J. Frank Evans and brother, Charles G. Paramoure, preceded her in death.
