Mary Smith Brown
Mrs. Mary Smith Brown of Cordele died at Wesley Woods Budd Terrace in Atlanta on Thursday, January 13, 2005.
Born April 10, 1923 in Ocilla, she was the daughter of the late James Colin and Mamie Huff Smith and the widow of Marcus Courtney Brown.
Mrs. Brown was a graduate of Georgia College at Milledgeville where she received a BS degree in business administration. She was the Crisp County Director (RET) of the Georgia Department of Family and Children Services where she was employed for 34 years. She also served on the Advisory Board after her retirement. She was a member of Cordele First United Methodist Church and the Fellowship Sunday School class.
Services were held at Cordele First United Methodist Church on Sunday, January 16 at 2 p.m. Interment followed at Sunnyside Cemetery.
Survivors include three sisters, Virginia Boland of Decatur, her twin sister and her husband, Elizabeth and William B. Stalvey of Roswell and Ruth Smith of Atlanta; nephews, Gary Stalvey and his wife, Pam, and Billy Stalvey; a niece, Jeanne Boland and two great-nieces, Emily and Allison Stalvey; a great-nephew, Chet Knight and a great-great-nephew, Bretton Knight. She was preceded in death by her son, Michael Brown.

Margaret H. Mitchell
Mrs. Margaret H. Mitchell, 90, of Ocilla died Wednesday, January 5, 2005 at the Life Care Center in Fitzgerald.
Services were private.
Mrs. Mitchell was born December 9, 1914 in Ocilla, daughter of the late Carl B. and Hattie Johnson Hodnett. She grew up in Ocilla and moved back in 1977 from West Palm Beach, FL where she worked as a sales clerk and she was also a former resident of Ocala, FL. Mrs. Mitchell was of the Methodist faith.
Survivors include her husband, Clifford Mitchell of Ocilla; nephews, John W. Hodnett of Scotland Neck, NC; Pat Hodnett of Ocilla and Carl Hodnett of Griffin; one brother, Henry Paul Hodnett of Macon. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Jake Williams.

Ruby Bullington
Mrs. Ruby Bullington, 67, of Fitzgerald died Friday morning, January 7, 2005 at Sylvester Health Care.
Services were held at Calvary Baptist Church, Fitzgerald, Monday, January 10 at 11 a.m., with Rev. James Griffin and Rev. Ricky Kellum officiating. Interment followed in Evergreen Cemetery.
Mrs. Bullington was born August 6, 1937 in Turner County, daughter of the late Pleasant W. and Dora Maebelle Rump Lamb. She lived in Ben Hill County and Irwin County most of her life and was a former employee of Fitzgerald Underwear and H. R. Kaminsky and Sons. Mrs. Bullington was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
Survivors include her children, Norman Bullington, Carlton Bullington, Mae Brady and Sherrie Giddens, all of Fitzgerald and Janet Batten of Tift County; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Homer Lamb of Fitzgerald and Charlie Lamb of Arabi; one sister, Alice Cumbee of Fitzgerald; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Clifford Bullington, three brothers and a sister.

Rev. Linzie J. Alewine
Rev. Linzie J. Alewine, 74, of Fitzgerald died Wednesday, January 5, 2005 at his residence.
Services were held at the Paulk Funeral Home in Fitzgerald on Friday, January 7 at 4 p.m., with Rev. Charles Nichols officiating. Interment followed in Salem Cemetery.
Music was provided by organist, Marty Smith; guitarist, Billy Musgrove and a duet by Billy Musgrove and Becky Musgrove.
Pallbearers were Jay Neugent, Kevin Neugent, Corey Carver, Michael Owens, Jerry Turner and Tim Slaughter.
Rev. Alewine was born January 18, 1930 in Ben Hill County, son of the late Carlos and Carrie Stephens Alewine. He lived in the community most of his life. Rev. Alewine was an Evangelist, a farmer and a nursing home minister. He was a former employee of Pool Chevrolet and retired from Irwin County Motor Company. Rev. Alewine served in the United States Army and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife, Rilla Alewine of Fitzgerald; four children, Billy Haynes of Tifton, Jerry Haynes of Fitzgerald, Gloria Neugent of Willacoochee and Patty Herrin of Fitzgerald; 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Fannie Mae Mason of Atlanta and Ann Cleveland of Trafford, AL. He was preceded in death by a son, Ellis W. Haynes.

Wyna Pounds Taylor
On Wednesday, January 5, 2005, Wyna Louise Pounds Taylor of New Bern, NC went to her heavenly home with her family, and her friends, Nell Gibbs and June Tarnowski, at her bedside.
Mrs. Taylor touched many lives during the 52 years she lived in New Bern. She and her husband, Bob, owned and operated Taylor’s Grocery at Washington Forks for 27 years. She was a founding member of the New Bern Church of Christ. She was also a lifetime member of VFW Post 2514 and a member of Moca #14. Mrs. Taylor for numerous years worked at the voting polls in the western end of Craven County.
She was loved as “Ma Ma” by her three grandchildren and as “Great Ma Ma” by her two great-grandchildren. She was a lady who never met a stranger and was always willing to lend a helping hand. She enjoyed reading, fishing, crabbing and spending time with her family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Lee Taylor; brother, Clyde Pounds of Adel and parents, Dalton and Alma Pounds.
Survivors include two daughters, Wanda Taylor Bannister (Al) and Linda Taylor Dixon (Ronnie), all of New Bern, NC; two granddaughters, Renee Dixon Whitford (Brian) of Ernul, NC and Lisa Dawn Bannister of Roanoke, VA; one grandson, Ashley Dale Dixon of New Bern, NC; two great-grandchildren, Taylor Victoria Whitford and Hunter Christian Whitford, both of Ernul, NC; four sisters, Voncille McLeod (Steve) of St. Augustine, FL; Gloria Kirkwood of Moultrie; Dot Cason of Robertsdale, AL; Ruby Graham of Mystic; two brothers, Hoyle Pounds (Quinn) of Marietta, MS; James Pounds of Mystic and one sister-in-law, Lucille Pounds of Adel.
Services were held at Pollock-Best Funeral Chapel on Monday, January 10 at 11 a.m., with Craig Hearne officiating. Interment was held in New Bern National Cemetery.
Clara Lee Williams Woodard
Mrs. Clara Lee Williams Woodard of Ocilla died Saturday, December 25, 2004. She was 63.
Mrs. Woodard was born in Mt. Montgomery County on August 26, 1941 to Dallas and Annier Mae (Wallace) Williams. Both preceded her in death.
She was educated in the Irwin County School system. She was an active member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church of Fitzgerald.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Ceila Mae Williams of Montgomery County.
Survivors include her husband, Joseph Woodard; two sisters, Ruby Lee Townson of Broxton and Bula Mae Leggett of Adel; one brother, Thomas Williams of Ocilla; six children, Anthony Dean, Joyce Woodard Bell (Venson), Mark Woodard (Tammy), Sharon Woodard Pruitt (Charlie), Terry Woodard (Cynthia) and Sheila Woodard; 17 grandchildren, Shawn Smith, LaTasha Woodard, LaTonia Woodard, LaToya Woodard, Tony Woodard, Xavier Wilson, Vienice Bell, Shaquita Woodard, Terrance Woodard, Kevis Woodard, Marques Woodard, Nytone Woodard, Lakeisha Pruitt, Jakedria Pruitt, Kiara Pruitt, Briyanna Dean and Julin Dean three great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Services were held at Pleasant Grove First Baptist Church, Ocilla, Thursday, December 30 at 1 p.m. with Rev. W. F. Mitchell officiating.
Music was provided by soloists, Sister Lillian Talton and Sister Hattie Deese.
Active pallbearers were Norris McCutchen, Scottie Lampkin, Walter Belmer, Curtis Terry, Ronald Wynn, Venson Bell and Lawrence Wilson.
Honorary pallbearers were sons and grandsons.
Interment was held in Ocilla Cemetery.
Otis M. Hester
Mr. Otis M. Hester, 92, of Fitzgerald (Irwin County) died Tuesday, December 28, 2004 at Dorminy Medical Center.
Services were held at Paulk Funeral Home Chapel, Fitzgerald Thursday, December 30 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. John K. Mobley officiating. Interment followed in Evergreen Cemetery.
Music was provided by pianist, Sandy Woods.
Pallbearers were Tim Woods, J. D. Calhoun, Varney Cauley, Herman Foster, Edwin Paul and Billy Fussell.
Mr. Hester was born May 22, 1912 in Franklin County, AL, son of the late Marvin Lee and Tabitha Posey Hester. He was a member and the oldest Deacon of New Prospect Baptist Church. Mr. Hester was a retired farmer and he assisted with Meals On Wheels for several years. He was an avid fan of Sacred Harp music.
Survivors include his wife, Polly Hester of Fitzgerald; son, Michael Hester of Roswell and several nieces and nephews.

Lillian Langford Brown
Lillian Langford Brown, 83, of Jacksonville, FL, died Monday, December 27, 2004 at Kindred Hospital North Florida, Green Cove Springs, FL.
Florida services were held Thursday, December 30 at 10 a.m. at Highlands United Methodist Church with Rev. Joe Allinder officiating. Graveside services were held at Evergreen Cemetery on Thursday at 3:30 p.m., with Rev. Steve Waldorf officiating.
Mrs. Brown was born July 16, 1921 in Ocilla, daughter of the late Lafayette and Lillie Mae Bishop Langford. She lived in Jacksonville since 1956 from Waycross. Mrs. Brown was a retired bank teller and a member of Highlands United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Bruce A. and Ingrid Brown of Callahan, FL; one granddaughter, Jodie Brown; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary L. and Edwin Erickson of Toccoa, Billie L. and Leslie Spencer of Florence, SC and Patty L. and Frank Parrish of Fitzgerald; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Hugh W. and Ernestine Langford and Jim and Sandra Langford, all of Brunswick. She was preceded in death by her husband, Emory O. Brown.

Sara Williams Hunter
Mrs. Sara Williams Hunter, 60, passed away on Thursday, December 2, 2004 at her residence. Services were held at Bonaire United Methodist Church on Sunday, December 5, with interment in Bonaire Cemetery.
Mrs. Hunter was born February 18, 1944 in Kathleen, daughter of the late Thomas Newton and Beatrice Perdue Williams. She was a loving wife, dedicated mom and nana.
Mrs. Hunter retired as an Item Manager at Robins AFB in Civil Service and was a member of Bonaire United Methodist Church. She actively participated in the research and publication of the history of Houston County, “A Land So Dedicated”.
Preceding her in death were brothers, Bo Williams, Richard Williams and Earl Williams.
Survivors include her husband of 43 years, Billy Hunter of Bonaire; daughter, Donna Hunter Churchwell of Bonaire; Danny Churchwell; son, Bryan Hunter (Tonya) of Bonaire; brothers, R. A. Tommy G. Hudson
Mr. Tommy G. Hudson, 51, of Ocilla died Wednesday, March 2, 2005.
Services were held at Bethlehem Baptist Church, Irwin County on Saturday, March 5 at 11 a.m., with Rev. John Gibbs, Jr. and Rev. Donnie Wright officiating. Interment followed in Frank Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Art Davis, William Cook, Eddie Giddens, Bailey Dickens, Troy Smith and Warren Mixon.
Honorary pallbearers were D.O.T. employees, Long County Hunting Club and Horse Creek Hunting Club.
Music was provided by pianist, Dale Purvis and the Bethlehem Baptist Church choir under the direction of Deena Nelms.
Mr. Hudson was born May 16, 1953 in Irwin County, son of Grace H. Hudson and the late Eugene Hudson. Having lived in Irwin County all of his life, he was a 1971 graduate of Irwin County High School and attended ABAC. Mr. Hudson worked for the Department of Transportation for 18 years and was currently Crew Chief of Surveying, working out of the Tifton office.
He was a member of the Long County Hunting Club, Horse Creek Hunting Club, Irwin County Youth League and the Engineering Association of the Georgia Department of Transportation. Mr. Hudson was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and loved to cook for his family and friends.
Survivors include his wife, Gloria Hudson of Ocilla; children, Wesley Hudson, Hunter Hudson, Nan Pope and Joey Ammons, all of Ocilla; seven grandchildren; mother, Grace H. Hudson of Ocilla; sister and brother-in-law, Debbie and Jimmy Browning of Nashville and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Ricky Hudson.

Irene Young Pickett
Mrs. Irene Young Pickett, 82, of Ocilla died Wednesday, March 2, 2005.
Mrs. Pickett was born July 2, 1922 in Lowndes County, daughter of the late Dallas and Estelle Young. She received her education in the Lowndes County school system.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Earnest Pickett, two children and two brothers.
She was a faithful mother and member of Cedar Grove Baptist Church of Ocilla.
Survivors include five children, Sarah Colbert of Ocilla, Earnest J. Pickett (Tammi) of Nashville, Kenneth Pickett of Cherrylake, FL, Herman Pickett of Ocilla and Christine Boone of Fitzgerald; two brothers, Joshua Young (Viola) of Winter Haven, FL and Luke Young of Ocilla; one brother-in-law, Willie C. Wilcox of Ocilla; two sisters-in-law, Lottie M. Young of Ocilla and Viola Young of Winter Haven, FL; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Services were held at Cedar Grove Baptist Church in Ocilla on Saturday, March 5 at 2 p.m., with Rev. Marvin Smith officiating.

Hattie P. Barfield
Mrs. Hattie P. Barfield, 97, of Ocilla died Thursday, March 3, 2005 at Palemon Gaskin Nursing Home, Ocilla.
Services were held at the Paulk Funeral Home Chapel, Ocilla on Saturday, March 5 at 2 p.m., with Elder Elliotte Tucker and Rev. Dan Garrett officiating. Interment followed in Spring Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Tommy Barfield, Steve Register, Tyler Register, Ronnie Mobley, Ronald Giddens and Quintin Mobley.
Music was provided by organist, Marty Smith and congregational singing.
One of 17 children, Mrs. Barfield was born May 5, 1907 in Irwin County, daughter of the late Henry and Susie Tucker Purvis. She was a homemaker and helped her family farm after her husband, Albert Lewis Barfield died in 1944. Mrs. Barfield was a member of Spring Hill Primitive Baptist Church in Irwin County.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Sara Barfield of Macon; six grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild and one sister, Maxie Paulk of Florida.

Troy J. ‘Jackie’ Bowen
Mr. Troy J. “Jackie” Bowen, 52, of Irwinville died Sunday, March 6, 2005 at his residence.
Services will be held at Paulk Funeral Home Chapel, Fitzgerald on Wednesday, March 9 at 2 p.m., with Rev. Doug Gibson officiating. Interment will follow in Irwinville Cemetery.
Mr. Bowen was born September 10, 1952 in Irwin County, son of Sarah Joyce Vickers and Alton Bowen. He lived in the community since the early 1980’s from Brunswick where he was a shrimper with W. M. Reaves. After returning to Irwin County he was a hog farmer. He was a member of Irwinville Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Connie K. Bowen of Irwinville; two sons, Jimmy Bowen of Irwinville and T. C. Hope of Germany; three daughters, Vicky Dierker of Fitzgerald, Beth Bowen of Jacksonville, FL and Crystal “Sunshine” Bowen of Waycross; mother, Joyce Vickers Jones of Irwinville; father, Alton Bowen of Brunswick and 10 grandchildren; two brothers, Keith Bowen of Irwinville and Ray Bowen of Hazlehurst.
