Deborah L. Waldrop, 53 of Buford, GA. died November 11, 2007. She was a native of Ft. Campbell, KY. and was a daughter of the late James and Laura Hummel Lovette. She was a retired teacher. Funeral services were held November 15, 2007 in the chapel of Arthur Bowick Funeral Home. The Rev. Charles Carlile officiated and interment was in Rest Haven Cemetery. Pallbearers were Ray Gesualdo, James Paccillo, Kyle Rushing, Daniel Jones, Clarence Waldrop and Roy Fuson.

Mr. Buford (Buddy) Lewis
Mr. Buford (Buddy) Lewis of Monticello died Nov. 16, 2007 at the age of 66. Born in Fulton County to the late Daniel Jack and Cliddie Marie Blackman Lewis, he was a former resident of Atlanta and had lived in Monticello for the past 14 years. He retired from General Motors Lakewood Plant with 30 years of service, and was an avid fisherman. Mr. Lewis is survived by his children: Danny and Tammy Lewis of Monticello, Vickie and Billy Attaway of Jefferson, Barbara and Michael Biddy of Monticello, Pam and Melvin Daly of Griffin, Randy Lewis, Ricky Lewis, Lisa and William Biddy, Patsy and Shane Parham all of Monticello; 20 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; sisters: Mildred Dean of Colquitt and Dorothy Cobb of Bainbridge; several nieces and nephews.

Dr. James F. Mathews
Dr. James F. Mathews died on Monday, Nov. 11, 2007 following a brief illness. He was born on Sept. 10, 1921, the son of John James Mathews and Nancy Elizabeth Mathews. He was a life long member of the First Baptist Church of Monroe where he served in many capacities. He was a veteran of World War 11 where he served in the United States Air Force in Italy and Africa. After being honorably discharged, he returned to Monroe and then went on to finish his education at Columbia University. After which he started his practice of Optometry which he continued for a period of 53 years. He assisted in the organization of the First Republican Party in Walton County and remained a strong supporter of good and fair government throughout his life. He served the city of Monroe as Mayor for ten years and during the tenure he was the instigator for procuring, for the citizens, many additions to our city that continue to be appreciated and enjoyed. His credits include the Mathews Park, the building which now houses the Monroe/Walton Art Guild and many others. He was a man of strong quiet faith and leaned on principal of what is good and fair in making his decisions.

LCDR (Ret) Chester Dale Moss, age 91 of Good Hope died October 27, 2007. A native of Fairfield, WA. he was a son of the late Dale Moss and Anna Bigeral Moss. A retired pharmacist, he retired after serving 23 years in the U.S. Navy. A resident of Walton County for the past 18 years, he was a member of the Heritage Congregational Church. Funeral services were held November 1, 2007 in the Chapel of Arthur Bowick Funeral Home. The Rev. Tony Dyer officiated. The remains were cremated. Lloyd L. Smith
Lloyd L. Smith, 94, husband of the late, Eddie Burson Smith, died Thursday, Oct. 25, 2007 at Iris Place, Athens, Georgia. A native of Ringsted, Iowa, Lloyd was the son of the late Floyd and Josephine Iverson Smith. He was currently a resident of Iris Place and formerly a resident of Southern Plantation, Loganville, Lloyd served his country in the US Army during WWII and received the Purple Heart. He was a member of the Athens chapter of the Purple Heart and the Disabled American Veterans in Monroe. He received his BS and MS in Agricultural Engineering from the University of Georgia, was noted as a Professional Engineer (P.E.) and retired in 1974 as a Research Agricultural Engineer for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He was a longtime Rotarian in Monroe, GA as well as Leland, Miss. and was a Founding Member of the Monroe Chapter of AARP. He was a member of Bethabara Baptist Church, former deacon at First Baptist of Athens, GA, Leland, Miss and Monroe, GA. He was a Sunday School teacher at and also traveled on several mission trips building churches with First Baptist of Monroe.

Vera Jane Truman Phillips, 89 died Oct. 19, 2007 in Sun City Center, FL. A native of Pennsylvania she formerly resided in Monroe, GA. and was the widow of Fred Louis Phillips of Walton Co. GA. She is survived by her daughters: Mary Ellen Greene of Valrico, FL., Patty Ann Phillips of Carlsbad, CA. and Peggy Jean Phillips of San Diego, CA.; sons: Barry Lee Phillips of Jacksonville, FL. and Bradley Truman Phillips of Davisboro, GA.; seven grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held in the spring of 2008 at the New Hope Methodist Church in Between, GA.

Pam Bray, 52 , died Oct. 15, 2007 at Walton Regional Medical Center. She was born in Walton County on Dec. 9, 1954 to the late G.E. (Buddy) Hopkins and Joan H. Hopkins of Monroe. She is survived by : son: Curtis P. Arthur of Monroe; brother: Randal Hopkins, Cleveland; sisters: Melinda Stamm, Manassas, VA, Naomi Hopkins and Megan Hopkins of Monroe; granddaughter: Suzanne; niece: Jennifer (Johnny) Westberry; great nephews: Phoenix and Nevin Westberry, all of Walton County. Greatly missed, also by close friends: Karen Cartley, Athens, Vanesssa Stalets, TN, Gail Todd, Lynda Hickox and Robin Skinner, all of Monroe. Pam was musically gifted and in her teens was a pianist for the Monroe Congregational Holiness Church and a member of a trio who were featured at revivals and youth meetings.

Roe Chester Cheek, 88, died Thursday, Dec. 13, 2007. Graveside services were held at 1pm, Sunday, Dec.16, at Monroe Hills Memorial Gardens. Reverend Franklin Etheridge officiated. Mr. Cheek was born in Monroe, Georgia, June 8, 1919 to the late Rad Cheek and Sally Criswell Cheek. His loving wife of fifty-three years, Bobbie Marchman, died Aug. 13, 1994. His daughter, Connie Renee Cheek, also preceded him in death. He was a business owner in Monroe County, Georgia for thirty-two years. Mr. Cheek was proud of his Indian heritage and was a great storyteller. Survivors include his daughters: Sandra (Tony) Barham of Gray and Linda F. Cheek of Monroe; granddaughter: Amber Barham (Matthew) Cooling. Monroe County Memorial Chapel has charge of arrangements.

Mr. J.P. Toney
Mr. J.P. Toney, 89, of Monroe, passed away peacefully on the 13th day of Dec., 2007. He was born July 6, 1918 in Oconee County, , to John Newton and Icey Olivia Hooper Toney. At the time of his birth, theirs was that of a farming family and he enjoyed a great relationship with twelve brothers and sisters. As he grew up, he, along with other members of the family, endured and survived the great depression. It was at this time he developed his great love for the sport of baseball. He pitched with and for several teams located in areas from Commerce, Athens, Madison, Rutledge and in many Mill Towns thereabout. It seems his greatest joy was pitching for a team sponsored by the Civilian Conservation Core as they worked and developed what is now known as the Hard Labor Creek State Park at Rutledge, Georgia.
