Berta Mae Carpenter Cooper, 87, formerly of Jacksonville, died Monday, August 7, 2006.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, August 9 at Blockhouse Baptist Church in Jacksonville with burial in the church cemetery.
A native of Telfair County where she lived most of her life, Mrs. Cooper was the daughter of the late W.C. and Eliza McLeod Carpenter. She was a retired secretary for the Telfair County Extension Service and was a member of Blockhouse Baptist Church.
Mrs. Cooper was preceded in death by her husband, Slaten Alto Cooper, and sons, Jimmy Cooper and Gene Cooper.
Surviving are her daughter, Joyce Hendley of Ocilla; daughters-in-law, Mildred Cooper of Jacksonville and Marjorie Morrow of Fitzgerald; grandchildren, Jerry Cooper of Camilla, Sherri Hendley and Billy Hendley, both of Tifton; a great-grandson, Hunter Cooper of Camilla and caregiver, Mary Bradley of Ocilla.

Hazel F. ‘Pat’ Boytis
Hazel F. “Pat” Boytis, 84, of Melbourne, FL died Saturday, August 12, 2006 in Melbourne.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, August 18 in Mystic, with the Rev. Timothy Paulk officiating.
Mrs. Boytis was born January 22, 1922 in Mystic to the late George Thomas and Loretta Davis Towson. She was a homemaker. She moved to Brevard County, FL in 1940 from Mystic.
Mrs. Boytis is survived by her children: Patricia Perry, Steven Boytis and Joy Carlson; 14 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, John M. Boytis.

Rev. Bobby Stone
Rev. Bobby Stone, 73, of Ocilla, died August 1, 2006, at Tift Regional Medical Center.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, August 4 at Ocilla Baptist Church with the Rev. Jim Faircloth, Rev. J.W. Taylor, Rev. Danny Ray, Rev. Ike Thomas, Kevin McElyea and Dr. Lloyd Stembridge officiating. Interment followed in Pinetta Cemetery.
Chris Robinson, Brooks Robinson, Rhyan Ussery, Jim Casper, Michael McElyea and Andrew McElyea served as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were members of the American Legion, the Englewood Baptist Church family and the Pigout Coffee Club.
Providing music were pianist Tina Baldwin, soloists J.R. Poole and Rhyan Ussery and the Joy Notes Quartet: Hugh Roberts, J.R. Poole, Latrelle Cone and Joann Snyder.
Bro. Bobby was born March 30, 1933 in Irwin County to the late J.R. and Mamie Tucker Stone. He lived in Ben Hill and Irwin counties most of his life and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
He was instrumental in bringing Coachmen Industries to Fitzgerald. He was a former employee of Little Beaver Travel Trailers, and following their merger with Coachmen retired as service manager after 23 years of service.
A soldier for the Lord, Bro. Bobby was ordained and licensed by Pinetta Baptist Church. He was instrumental in establishing and was one of the early pastors of Northside Baptist Church. He was former pastor of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Irwin County and was pastor of Englewood Baptist Church for 37 years. He was a member of the American Legion and the Coffee Club at the Pigout.
Bro. Bobby was named Citizen Of The Year in 2006 and was one of the founders of Helping Hands of Irwin County. He was always willing to help anyone in need and will be greatly missed by his family and the community.
He is survived by his wife: Valeta Evans Stone, Ocilla; children: Teresa (Rolando) Diaz, Tampa, FL, Amelia (Kevin) McElyea, Franklin, IN, Pam (Tony) Armas, Bremen, Damon Stone, Fitzgerald, Jason and Lance Golden, both of Eldorado; five grandsons and three great-grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law: Betty and James Casper, Fitzgerald. He was preceded in death by twin daughters, Mary and Martha and a granddaughter.

Inez Stone Gibbs
Inez Stone Gibbs, 87, of Fitzgerald, died Wednesday, August 2, 2006 at the Osceola Nursing Home in Ocilla.
Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Saturday, August 5 at Salem Baptist Church, Ben Hill County, with the Rev. Randall Gibbs officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
James Sewell, Milton Huggins, Larry Cleghorn, H.D. Luke, Matt Cleghorn and Glenn Stokes served as pallbearers.
Music was provided by pianist Laura Travena.
Ms. Gibbs was born June 10, 1919 in Ben Hill County to the late Charlie F. and Beulah Livingston Stone. She lived in the community most of her life, graduating from Fitzgerald High School.
Ms. Gibbs worked in the shipyards in Savannah during World War II. She was a former employee of McClelland’s 5 & 10 and former manager of McConnell’s Cloth Shop. Ms. Gibbs was a former member of Salem Baptist Church and a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law: Rev. Randall and Reba Gibbs of Glenwood and Tommy and Tina Gibbs of Fitzgerald; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters and a brother.

Elisha Purvis
Elisha Purvis, 85, of Wray died Thursday, August 3, 2006 at the Osceola Nursing Home in Ocilla.
Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, August 5 at New Hope Cemetery, Coffee County, with the Rev. Billy Mills officiating. The service included a congregational song led by Delmer McCall.
Mr. Purvis was born March 14, 1921, in Irwin County to the late Richard and Nancy Joyce Purvis. He was a farmer and lived in the Wray community all of his life.
Mr. Purvis is survived by two brothers: Quincy Purvis, Sr., of Ambrose and Ben Purvis of Ocilla; several nieces and nephews.

Tracy Hobby
Tracy Hobby, 81, of Fitzgerald died Sunday, August 6, 2006 at Dorminy Medical Center.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 9 at the Paulk Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Steve Waldorf officiating. Interment will follow in the Irwinville Cemetery.
Mr. Hobby was born June 15, 1925 in Worth County to the late Addie T. and Lula Estelle Gwines Hobby. He moved to Fitzgerald in 1954 to work for Benny Anderson at Fitzgerald Motor Company as an auto mechanic. He was a former employee of Kimball’s Dairy, a former Bailiff for the Ben Hill County courts and retired as an Automobile Mechanic Instructor for Ben Hill-Irwin Technical School.
Mr. Hobby served in the United States Army during World War II. He was a member of the American Legion, a member of the International Order Of Odd Fellows and a member of the Retired Teachers Association. Mr. Hobby was a member of Central United Methodist Church, where he was a member and former president of the Carlyle-Mathis Sunday School Class.
Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law: David T. and Judy Hobby of Fitzgerald; step-daughter and husband: Pat Ross-Clark and Frank of Atlanta; eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; brother: Franklin Hobby of Sylvester. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucile Clements Hobby, a brother and two sisters.
Serving as pallbearers for the funeral services of Tracy Hobby Wednesday, August 9 were Dan Hobby, Drew Hobby, Mike Hobby, George Hobby, Maurice Hobby, Jim Harper and Jonathan Ross.
Honorary pallbearers were members of the Carlyle-Mathis Sunday School Class.
Music was provided by pianist Becky Anderson and soloist Lee Massee.

Ouida McKie Tucker
Ouida McKie Tucker, 84, of Fitzgerald, died Monday, August 7, 2006 at the Fitzgerald Nursing Home.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, August 8 at the Paulk Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Barry Gordon officiating. Interment followed in Evergreen Cemetery.
Mrs. Tucker was born May 5, 1922 in Telfair County to the late Olius F. and Lola Wells Tedders. She lived in the community most of her life and was a former resident of Eastman.
Mrs. Tucker was a homemaker, a former lunchroom lady at Ashton School, former employee of White Swan Laundry and she retired from H.R. Kaminsky & Sons. She was a member of Westside Baptist Church.
Mrs. Tucker is survived by her children: Shirley Dobbins of Fitzgerald, Marvin McKie of Summerville, SC, Cindy Tucker of Ocilla, Mike Tucker of Pace, FL, Zelna Nunn and Sandra Singletary, both of Fitzgerald and Larry Tucker of Lake City, FL; 19 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; brothers: Felix Tedders of Macon and Grady Tedders of Eastman. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Marvin McKie and William B. (W.B.) Tucker and two brothers.
Serving as pallbearers for the Tuesday, August 8 funeral services of Ouida McKie Tucker were James McBryant, Shane Tucker, Trent Tucker, Jim Lewis, David Tucker and Clint Revels.

Kendra Annicia Thompson
Funeral services for Kendra Annicia Thompson, infant daughter of Kendrick Thompson and Teedra Lawson of Ocilla, were held Friday, August 4, 2006 at 2 p.m. at the Davis Funeral Home Chapel in Ocilla with the Rev. Charles Anderson officiating. Interment followed in Paulk Cemetery, Holt.
Little Kendra was born Monday, July 31 at Irwin County Hospital in Ocilla. In addition to her parents, survivors include her grandparents: Regina Belmer and Sharon Lawson of Ocilla and the late Torrence Cooper; great-grandparents: Mary Thompson and the late Jim Thompson, Katherin O’Neal and the late Cleo O’Neal, Neily and Edgar Anderson, all of Ocilla, Beverly Lawson of Fitzgerald.

Eloise Andrews George
Eloise Andrews George, 94, of Ocilla, died Thursday, July 27, 2006 at Palemon Gaskin Nursing Home in Ocilla after a long illness.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 31, at Mt. Olive A.M.E. Church in Ocilla with the Rev. L. Wright officiating. Interment followed in Ocilla Cemetery.
Deacons of Mathis Chapel Baptist Church served as pallbearers. Music was provided by the Mt. Olive A.M.E. Church choir and soloist Novella Miller.
Mrs. George was born October 5, 1911 in Irwin County to the late Jesse and Ruth Akins Andrew. She was a lifetime member of the Eastern Star and member of Turner Chapel A.M.E. Church.
A graduate of Ocilla High School, Mrs. George was an elementary school teacher in the Irwin County School District for 40 years, teaching in Pleasant Grove (her first teaching job), Gladys, Melvin, Holt and Ocilla schools. A graduate of Savannah State College, she received her bachelor of science degree in elementary education in 1950 and did graduate work at Atlanta University in Atlanta and at Tuskegee Institute in Tuskegee, AL.
Mrs. George loved to teach school and Sunday school at her church, her greatest love. She will also be remembered for her weekly column which appeared in The Ocilla Star.
Mrs. George is survived by her husband of 63 years, Rev. Reuben George of Ocilla; one son, Uylsses Wilder of Spokane, WA; step-children, Eric Payne and Annie Ruth Tagett of Ocilla; grandchildren, Phyllis Denbeigh of Spokane, WA, Martha Hodges of Elk City, UT and step-grandchild Rebacco Facson of FL; great-grandchildren, Nicholas Denbeigh of Spokane, WA and Ben Hodges, Sam Hodges and Natasha Hodges of Elk City, UT.

James E. Everett
James E. Everett, 84, of Oak Lawn, IL died Tuesday, July 25, 2006 at his residence.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Friday, July 28 at Chapel Hill Gardens South Funeral Home in Oak Lawn, IL. Interment followed in Chapel Hill Gardens South Cemetery.
Mr. Everett was born September 5, 1921 in Cheyenne, WY to the late Robert A. and Loretta Rooney Everett. He lived in Oak Lawn since 1947 and was a retired auto body mechanic. Mr. Everett served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was a member of the Air Mail Pioneers, the American Legion and the Teamster Union Local # 701. He was a member of the Catholic faith.
Mr. Everett is survived by his wife: Betty Burton Everett of Oak Lawn IL (formerly of Fitzgerald); sons and daughters-in-law: James E. Everett, Jr. and Sandra of Key West, FL and Richard and Colleen Everett of Inez, TX; seven grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law: Charles Bruce and Nellie Everett of Oak Lawn, IL; sisters-in-law: Bobbie Griffin of Irwinville and Leonet Bostwick of Lakeland. He was preceded in death by a son, Robert Everett.
Inez Walker Roberts
Inez Walker Roberts, 78, of Ocilla died Tuesday, July 18 at the Irwin County Hospital.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 21 at the Paulk Funeral Home Chapel in Ocilla, with the Rev. Bobby Stone officiating. Interment followed in the Ocilla Cemetery.

Mrs. Roberts was born March 12, 1928 in Irwin County to the late James Randolph and Emma Jean Grantham Walker. She lived in Irwin County all of her life, retiring after 23 years as a nurse’s assistant at Osceola Nursing Home. She was of the Baptist faith.
Mrs. Roberts is survived by her son: Tony Ray Roberts of Ocilla; five grandchildren: Rhonda (DeSaray) Taft of Broxton, Kris (Tim) Martin, Johnny Edward Walls, Jr. (Linda) and Bobby Joe Walls, all of Douglas and Joshua Lee Walls of Ocilla; 10 great-grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law: Lucile and Homer Crumpton of Ocilla; son-in-law: Johnny Edward Walls of Douglas.
She was preceded in death by her husband, LeRoy Roberts, three daughters: Connie Faye Walls, Debbie and Debra Roberts and one great-grandchild, Angel Noel Walls.

Norman C. Phillips
Norman C. Phillips, 71, of Atlanta died Sunday, July 23 at his residence.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 26 at the Paulk Funeral Home Chapel, Fitzgerald, with Russell Harper and Steve Delaneuville speaking. Interment will follow in Osierfield Cemetery, Irwin County.
Mr. Phillips was born July 16, 1935 in Calhoun County, AL to the late John R. and Bertie Conner Phillips. He lived in Atlanta for the past 26 years, retiring as an apartment complex maintenance manager. He was a Jehovah’s Witness.
Mr. Phillips is survived by his wife of 42 years: June Harper Phillips of Atlanta; sisters: Mary Joyce Hudgins and Hazel P. Ogle, both of Calhoun County, AL; brothers: Billy Phillips of Smyrna, Ernest Phillips of Stone Mountain, Nathan Phillips of Lake Lanier and Johnny Phillips of Sylacauga, AL.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Olivia Fezzell.

Alma Alexander
Alma Alexander, 89, of Fitzgerald died Monday, August 14, 2006 at the Fitzgerald Nursing Home.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, August 17 at the Paulk Funeral Home Chapel in Fitzgerald with Pastor Vernon Hughes and Pastor Junior Morgan officiating. Interment followed in New Corinth Cemetery.
Joel Kimbrell, David Kimbrell, Wesley Kimbrell, Michael Kimbrell, James Alexander and Ken Walsh served as pallbearers.
Music was provided by pianist Sandra Sellers and a trio comprised of Fred, Janice and Trevor Smith.
Mrs. Alexander was born July 28, 1917 in Webster County to the late Jim and Luta Stephens Barrentine. She lived in the community most of her life and was a former resident of Valdosta and Ocilla. Mrs. Alexander was a homemaker and a member of the Holiness Baptist faith.
Survivors include four sons and daughters-in-law: Jack and Velma Kimbrell, Tifton, Carl and Onita Kimbrell, Pinetta, FL, Cecil and Myrtle Kimbrell, Fitzgerald and James and Sherry Alexander, Richmond Hill; 22 grandchildren, a host of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; sister: Mary Alice Morris, Phenix City, AL.
Mrs. Alexander was preceded in death by her husbands, Buddy Kimbrell and O.M. Alexander, daughter, Gwennell Walsh, four brothers and four sisters.
