Herman C. Mixon
Herman C. Mixon, Sr., 71, of Ocilla died Friday, August 18, 2006 at his residence.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, August 20 at the Paulk Funeral Home Chapel, Ocilla with Elder Jerry Barrs, Rev. Ralph Griffin and Rev. Andrew Wilder officiating. Interment followed in Evergreen Cemetery.
Mitchell Coffee, Henry Rawlins, Pearson Golden, Don Ross, Dave Newhing and Gary Young served as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were the Steadfast Seekers Sunday School Class, Joyce Mulkey, Ned Agee, Dean Davis and Cotton Davis.
Music was provided by Dean Davis, organist and soloist.
Mr. Mixon was born June 1, 1935 in Irwin County to the late Curtis and Elma Tucker Mixon. He lived in Irwin County most of his life.
Mr. Mixon was a retired Road Construction Superintendent. His career spanned 48 years, beginning with Coffee Construction and E. A. Mann & Company, which later became Everette Dykes Grassing Company. He attended the Ocilla Baptist Church and the Steadfast Seekers Sunday School Class.
Mr. Mixon is survived by his second grade sweetheart and wife of over 52 years: Myrtle Lee Mixon of Ocilla; son and daughter-in-law: Carroll and Lynn Mixon of Tifton; daughter and son-in-law: Cathy and Bryan Golden of Tifton; son and daughter-in-law: James and Dawn Mixon of Fitzgerald; five grandchildren: Duane (Jessica) Mixon, Matthew Mixon, Zack Golden, Becky Golden, Michael (Heather) Coffey; one great-grandson: Blake Coffey; sister: Faye Smith of Fitzgerald; brother: Wayne “Yogie” Mixon of Fitzgerald.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Bobby and Jerry Mixon and three infant brothers.
Paulk Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Nellie Paulk
Miss Nellie Paulk, age 89, of Wray died Thursday, August 17, 2006 at Shady Acres Convalescent Center in Douglas.
Miss Paulk, a native of Irwin County, was born January 13, 1917, the daughter of the late Alonzo and Eliza McGovern Paulk. Brothers Quinton Paulk, George Paulk, Aubrey Paulk, L. L. Paulk, Alonzo “Bug” Paulk and Ralph Paulk preceded her in death.
Survivors include nieces and nephews: Jerry Paulk, Doyle Paulk, Don Ray Paulk, Lonnie Paulk, Hugh Paulk, Jane Paulk, Melvin Paulk, Martha Jean Paulk McKinnon, Evelyn Anderson, Sharon Stone and Annette Overstreet.
Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, August 20 at New Hope Baptist Church in Ambrose with the Rev. Earnest Harper officiating. Soloist, Ferrell Harper sang, “What A Day That Will Be” with Michael Harper, pianist.
Burial followed in the New Hope Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Wayne Paulk, Chris Simmons, Ben Paulk, Merlon Paulk, Myron Paulk, Rob Merritt and Jamie Tate.
Sims Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Louise Parrish Harper
Louise Parrish Harper, 92, of Ocilla died Sunday, August 20, 2006 at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, August 24 at the Paulk Funeral Home Chapel, Ocilla, with the Rev. Ed Reeves officiating. Interment will follow in Brushy Creek Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home in Ocilla from 7-9 Wednesday evening.
Mrs. Harper was born July 11, 1914 in Wilcox County to the late John William and Susie Jane Paulk Parrish. She lived most of her life in Ocilla and for the past 10 years, lived with her daughter in Albany.
Mrs. Harper was a former employee of Walker’s 5 & 10 store in Ocilla, the Irwin County Hospital, a former dispatcher for the police and sheriff’s departments in Ocilla, a former employee of Ocilla Pharmacy and a former employee of Armor Packing Company in Tifton. She was a former member of the Order of Eastern Star, the Home Demonstration Club and a member of Pinetta Baptist Church.
Mrs. Harper is survived by her daughter: Lurene H. Justice of Albany; son and daughter-in-law: Pearlie and Bobbie Harper of Ocala, FL; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; brother: Harold Parrish of Irwinville; sisters: Reatha Rawlins of Barnesville, Vera Holston of Americus and Carolyn Hester of Jackson; sisters-in-law: Lurene Parrish of Ocilla and Ernestine Parrish of Warner Robins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, J.L. Harper, three brothers and one sister.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Pinetta Baptist Church, Big Creek Baptist Church or the American Cancer Society.

Clarence Howard Paulk
Clarence Howard Paulk, 80, of Irwin County died Wednesday, October 4, 2006 at Taylor Regional Hospital in Hawkinsville.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, October 6 at Satilla Baptist Church in Irwin County with the Rev. William Pope and the Rev. Dan Johnson officiating. Providing music were soloist Randy Hulsey and pianist Dr. Jackie Clayton. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
Gary Paulk, L.H. Dill, Ron Paulk, Waynie Vickers, John Paulk, C.J. Gamble, D.J. Harper and Larry Paulk served as pallbearers.
Mr. Paulk was born December 4, 1925 in Irwin County to the late Lott and Rachel Vickers Paulk. He was a farmer and lived in Irwin County all of his life.
A veteran, Mr. Paulk served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was a member and a Deacon of Satilla Baptist Church, and was an avid woodworker and stock trader.
Mr. Paulk is survived by his wife of 60 years: Karleen Harper Paulk of Irwin County; daughter and son-in-law: Linda Kaye and Donald Pope of Ocilla; son and daughter-in-law: Howard Lott and Lorraine Paulk of Cumming; grandchildren: John Paulk of Cumming, D.A. Pope of Ocilla, Linda Pope of Jesup and Sherry St. John of Savannah; five great-grandchildren and brother: Jacob Willis Paulk of Irwin County.
He was preceded in death by two sisters and a brother.

Jule A. West
Jule A. West, 94, of Dublin died Thursday October 5, 2006 at his residence.
Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, October 8 at Woodland Heights Baptist Church in Dublin. Interment followed at 11 a.m. Tuesday, October 10 at the Georgia Veterans Cemetery in Milledgeville. The Rev. Harrell D. Rogers officiated.
Mr. West was born in Irwin County on July 31, 1912. He was the son of the late Joseph Albertus West and Ethel Simmons West of Ocilla. He is also preceded in death by his two sisters, Lillian Brown and Mary Phipps. He was a wonderful father and grandfather always putting family first. He was a member of Woodland Heights Baptist Church.
Mr. West is survived by one daughter, Judy West Blalock and a son-in-law, Elwyn Blalock of Juliette; two grandchildren, Holly (Chris) Williams of Gray and Tammy (Ron) Smith of Macon; two great-grandchildren; three brothers, Ernest (Gloria) West of Moultrie, David (Lois) West of Rincon and Herman (Eva Nell) West of Ocilla; one sister, Ruth (Hab) Baker of South Hill Virginia and several nieces and nephews.

Mignon ‘Tina’ Gresham Dorminey
Mignon “Tina” Gresham Dorminey, 82, of Ocilla died Sunday, October 1, 2006 at the Irwin County Hospital in Ocilla.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, October 5 at the Ocilla Baptist Church with the Rev. Jesse Alligood officiating. Graveside services will follow at 4 p.m. in Wisteria Cemetery, Union Point. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 Wednesday evening at the funeral home in Ocilla.
Mrs. Dorminey was born December 10, 1923 in Union Point to the late Percy C. and Nell Harris Gresham. She met her future husband, Dr. Arthur Leroy Dorminy at the University of Georgia and was married in 1948. She attended Georgia Southern College and was a graduate of the University of Georgia with a degree in Elementary Education before moving to Ocilla in 1950. She taught school in Monticello, Monroe and Irwin County.
Mrs. Dorminey was a member and pillar of Ocilla Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School, worked with the G.A.s and Vacation Bible School. She was an avid reader and supporter of the Irwin County Library, a member of the Ocilla Book Club and a founder of the Irwin County Arts Council. Mrs. Dorminey was of great assistance in the development and ongoing support of Christian Veterinary Missions.
She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother and a former Cub Scout Den Mother. Sensing the needs of others, she was always ready to help people who were less fortunate.
Mrs. Dorminey is survived by her husband: Dr. A.L. Dorminy of Ocilla; sons and daughters-in-law: Blair and Betsy Dorminey of Athens and Bruce and Susan Dorminey of Valdosta; grandson: Sterling Dorminey of Athens and brother: William C. “Bill” Gresham, Houston, TX.
Serving as pallbearers for the Thursday, October 5 funeral services for Tina Gresham Dorminey were Wycliff Griffin, Ed Dorminy, Mark Sams, Ray Paulk, Carter Gresham, Kermit Elliott, Dr. Dwain Smith, Jim Allison and Bill Vance.
Honorary pallbearers were members of the Martha Sunday School Class.
Providing music were soloist Randy Reeves, pianist Barbara Jacobs, organist Angie Gould and violinist Sterling Dorminey.
Memorials may be made to the Ocilla Baptist Church, Irwin County Library or to Christian Veterinary Missions.

Warren Jack Fletcher
Warren Jack Fletcher, 58, of Mystic died Friday, September 29, 2006 at his residence.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, October 1 at the Paulk Funeral Home Chapel in Ocilla. Interment followed in Fletcher Cemetery, Irwin County.
Mike Wilson, Ed Collins, Jimmy Clements, Buck Hall, Don Hickey and Rusty Hickey served as pallbearers.
Mr. Fletcher was born April 11, 1948 in Irwin County to the late Cliff and Miriam Clements Fletcher. He was a farmer and lived in the community all of his life. Mr. Fletcher was a graduate of Irwin County High School. He was of the Baptist faith.
He is survived by his sisters: Alice R. Fletcher and Connie Marie Turner, both of Mystic, Bonnie Ann Strickland of Fitzgerald and Emily Cliff Shivers of Bowling Green, KY; four nieces and three nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Wendell Clements.

Doris L. Pridgen
Doris L. Pridgen, 83, of Fitzgerald died Friday, September 22, 2006 at Irwin County Hospital. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, September 25 at Paulk Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Barry Gordon officiating. Music was provided by pianist Patsy Spradlin and soloist Ronnie Blackstock. Interment followed in Evergreen Cemetery.
Harry Pridgen, Herby Pridgen, Curtis Taylor, Jacob Pridgen, Andy Pridgen and Kenny Pridgen served as pallbearers.
Ms. Pridgen was born May 15, 1923 in Ben Hill County to the late Jacob Lafayette and Myrtle Paxton Pridgen. Ms. Pridgen had resided in the community all of her life.
A graduate of Fitzgerald High School and Macon Beauty School, Ms. Pridgen was a beautician for over 50 years. She owned and operated Doris’s Beauty Shop and was formerly associated with The Beauty Bob in Fitzgerald. She was a member of Crossview Baptist Church.
Ms. Pridgen is survived by her brother and sisters-in-law: Rev. Donnie W. and Norma Pridgen of Ocilla, Evelyn Pridgen of Fitzgerald and Mary Pridgen of Jacksonville Beach, FL and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Aubrey Pridgen and Onree W. Pridgen and one sister, Etta Ruth Pridgen.

Annie Lee Luke
Annie Lee Luke, 85, of Fitzgerald died Saturday, September 23, 2006 at the Palemon Gaskin Nursing Home.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, September 25 at Paulk Funeral Home Chapel in Fitzgerald with the Rev. Clayton Dowd and the Rev. Kimberly L. Keen officiating. Karen Culpepper shared a poem and music was provided by pianist Wendy Dowd and soloist Kenny Croft. Interment followed in the Evergreen Cemetery.
Krieg Luke, Lance Luke, Marcus Peacock, Brent Peacock, Neil Dixon and Roger Fuller served as pallbearers.
Mrs. Luke was born April 19, 1921 in Turner County to the late Horace Oliver and Minnie Yarbrough Nix. A homemaker, she had lived in the community most of her life and attended Christian Tabernacle.
Mrs. Luke is survived by one son and daughter-in-law: H.D. and Rachel Luke of Ocilla; six grandchildren: Rev. Kimberly L. Keen, Karen L. Culpepper, Krieg D. Luke, Marcus Peacock, Brent Peacock, Lance Luke and 11 great-grandchildren; three sisters: Margaret Dawson of Conyers, Maurice Robinson and Celestia Fuller, both of Macon.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman Luke, son Gerald Luke, one brother and five sisters.

John Lee Vernon Day
John Lee Vernon Day, 60, of Rochelle was found on September 8, 2006 in Fitzgerald.
Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, September 17 at Waterloo Cemetery with the Rev. Terrell Roberts officiating. Music was provided by soloist Lisa Womack and a trio consisting of Dewey Drawdy, Kristie Edge and Amanda Ford.
Mr. Day was born August 1, 1946 in Tifton,to Virdell Nasworthy Day and the late John L.V. “Buddy” Day. He lived in Irwin and Tift counties most of his life. Mr. Day was a former welder for Tifton Machine Shop and he farmed for Mark Clark. He was of the Holiness Baptist faith.
He is survived by two daughters: Regina Miller of Tifton and Luciana Coleman of Florida; one granddaughter; mother: Virdell Nasworthy Day of Rochelle; brothers and sisters: Fred Day of Fitzgerald, George Day of Bainbridge, Raymond Day of Colquitt, Frances Dailey of Perry, Grace Crosby of Cordelle, Eva Mae May and Jody Day, both of Donaldsonville, Barbara Hancock of Colquitt, Brenda Coleman, Geri Fountain and Teresa Day, all of Fitzgerald. He was preceded in death by a brother, Melvin Day.

Jacob M. Harper
Jacob M. Harper, 84, of Wray died Sunday, September 17, 2006 at his residence.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, September 23 at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Douglas with Ray Way officiating.
Mr. Harper was born April 7, 1922 in Wray to the late Alonzo and Eunice Eastman Harper. He lived the greater part of his life in the Wray community.
Mr. Harper began working with his father at a turpentine still and pulpwooding. He worked as a delivery person and maintenance technician for an L.P. gas company, was a carpenter and worked in maintenance at Dorminy Medical Center.
He was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Douglas but served many other Kingdom Hall congregations in Georgia: Fitzgerald, Tifton, Waycross, Baxley and Hazlehurst and in Florida: Gainesville and Lake City.
He is survived by his wife: Nell Harper of Wray; two daughters and a son-in-law: Melanie and James Adams of Baxley and Monica Sue Gibbs of Fitzgerald; three sons and a daughter-in-law: Kenneth Harper of Wray, Thomas and Katherine Harper of Ray City and Andrew Harper of Waycross; 17 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two brothers: Russell Harper of Fitzgerald and Linell Harper of Dallas; and one sister: Miriam Sherrett of Fitzgerald. He was preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters.

Betty Burton Everett
Betty Burton Everett, 79, of Oak Lawn, IL died Sunday, September 10, 2006 at her residence. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Thursday, September 14 at Chapel Hill Gardens South Funeral Home in Oak Lawn, IL. Interment followed in Chapel Hill Gardens South Cemetery.
Mrs. Everett was born June 24, 1927 in Ben Hill County to the late Carl LaRue and Ina Mae Anderson Burton. She grew up in Fitzgerald and lived in Oak Lawn, IL since 1947. Mrs. Everett was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.
She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law: James E. Everett, Jr. and Sandra of Key West, FL and Richard and Colleen Everett of Inez, TX; seven grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren; sisters: Bobbie L. Griffin of Irwinville and Leonet Bostick of Lakeland.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James E. Everett and a son, Robert Everett.

Wilmoteen Branam
Wilmoteen McDonald Branam, 84, of Fitzgerald, died Tuesday, September 12, 2006 at her residence.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Friday, September 15 at Arbor Baptist Church with Dr. Lloyd Stembridge and the Rev. Howard Kitchens officiating. Music was provided by pianist Sandy Taylor and singers Jay Parrack and Laurie White. A poem was read by Michael Kennedy. Interment followed in Evergreen Cemetery.
Gary Branam, Corey Gibbs, Michael Kennedy, Bob McDonald, John Rowell and Michael Branam served as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Dorminy Medical Center employees, the Fitzgerald High School Class of 1939 and Arbor Baptist Church Deacons.
Mrs. Branam was born August 29, 1922 in Jackson County to the late John M. and Margie Hartley McDonald. She moved to Fitzgerald in 1925 from Jackson County. Mrs. Branam was a 1939 graduate of Fitzgerald High School, where she was a star basketball and softball player. Mrs. Branam was a former employee of Ben Hill County Hospital, the Monarch Company, Fitzgerald Underwear and worked as a patient representative for 28 years at Dorminy Medical Center.
She accepted Jesus as her Saviour at Salem Baptist Church in 1942 and moved her letter to Abba Baptist Church in 1952. She helped establish a church softball league and then played softball for the league until 1984. At her death she was a member of Arbor Baptist Church. She was a Sunday School teacher for over 50 years.
Survivors include her devoted husband of 63 years: Edwin J. Branam of Fitzgerald; daughters: Annette Gibbs of Cordele and Bonnie Sproul of Albany; son: Quinton Branam of Albany; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.
