Pearl I. Haskey
Pearl I. Haskey, 88, of Rebecca died Saturday, November 25, 2006 in Ben Hill County after a lengthy illness.
Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, November 28 at The St. Williams Catholic Church in Fitzgerald. Interment followed in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Ashburn.
The daughter of the late Emmett Clay and Minnie LeNora Blackburn Israel, Mrs. Haskey was born in Turner County and was a member of the St. Williams Catholic Church. She was a long time resident of Huntington Beach, CA and was a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.
Mrs. Haskey served as president of The Order of the Eastern Star. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Southern Dames of America, Sons and Daughters of The Pilgrim, Dame of Court of Honor and Daughters of American Colonists.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands: Herschel Thomas “Bud” Johnson, Jr. and Raymond Haskey; sons: Larry Thomas and Rodney Russell Johnson; brothers: Roy, Travis and L.J. Israel and sisters: Willie L. Arnett and Clara Streb.
Survivors include her daughter: Meriam Day of Fitzgerald; brother: Elmo T. Israel of Albany, four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Audrey Whitley Dorminy
Audrey Whitley Dorminy, 94, of Fitzgerald died Saturday night, November 25, 2006 at the Southern Senior Living Personal Care Home in Douglas.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 29 at the Paulk Funeral Home Chapel in Fitzgerald with the the Rev. Ken Ross, the Rev. Kelly Brown, the Rev. Ernest Harper and the Rev. Dan Johnson officiating. Interment will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery.
Mrs. Dorminy was born July 22, 1912 in Irwin County to the late Thomas Jacob and Olive Harper Whitley. She was a retired elementary school teacher, having taught in Jacksonville, FL, Ocilla and Fitzgerald. She graduated from the Martha Berry School in Rome and received her college education from South Georgia College and the University of Florida. Mrs. Dorminy also was a representative for World Book Encyclopedia.
She was a member of the Ben Hill-Irwin Retired Educators Association, the United Daughters of The Confederacy and the Gateway Garden Club. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Bethany Sunday School Class.
Mrs. Dorminy is survived by a daughter and son-in-law: Sandra and Charles Williamson of Douglas; son and daughter-in-law: Dr. Larry and Dona Jean Dorminy of Downingtown, PA; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bryant Hanes Dorminy, Jr., two brothers and two sisters.

Thomas L. (Tom) Burns, Jr.
Thomas L. (Tom) Burns, Jr., 80, of Rome died Wednesday, November 15, 2006.
Mr. Burns was born in Palatka, FL November 22, 1925 to T. Legette and Mary Blitch Burns. His family moved to Fitzgerald when he was a year old. After graduation from high school, he joined the Army and fought in the Phillipines and Japan during World War II.
At the University of Georgia, Mr. Burns was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity and intramural sports teams. After receiving his BBA, he entered business as a partner with his foster father, Monroe Fletcher at M.M. Fletcher Buick in Fitzgerald. He was very active in the community, serving as president of the Jaycees and Kiwanis Club and as national director of the Georgia Jaycees.
Mr. Burns worked for Buick Motor Division of General Motors for 20 years in California, Oregon and Florida and finally as assistant zone manager in Dallas, TX, when he retired early to purchase Tom Burns Pontiac, Buick, GMC, Mercedes in Rome. He served in many capacities at First United Methodist Church, as a board member at Citizens First Bank and Coosa Country Club, president of the Auto Dealers of Rome and member of the board of the Boys and Girls Club and Kiwanis Club. He owned Cedartown Ford-Mercury for a number of years in the 1980s, After retiring in 1994, he missed his fellow employees and customers, so he operated Burns Chevrolet, Pontiac, Oldsmobile in Ellijay until 2002.
Survivors include his wife: Georgia Neal Wolfe Burns; son: Mark Monroe Burns; daughter: Mary Elizabeth Cischke; four grandchildren and sister: Lillian Robinson of Fitzgerald.
A memorial service was held Sunday, November 19, 2:30 p.m. at First United Methodist Church. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Prince Club, No Name Coffee Club, Wednesday Coffee Club, former employees and special friends: Lydell Ayers, Ron Abbott, David Harvey, Dr. James Whatley, Dr. Floyd Roebuck and Hal Richards.

Grover W. Douglas
Grover W. Douglas, 79, of Mystic died Tuesday, November 7, 2006 at the Irwin County Hospital.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, November 10 at the Paulk Funeral Home Chapel in Ocilla. Interment followed in Mystic Cemetery.
Music was provided by pianist Pam Young and trio: Gordon Poole, Pam Young and Hannah Young.
Melvin Hunt, Jason Hopper, Jamie Bridges, Gene Bridges, Nick Matthews and Matthew Bridges served as pallbearers.
Mr. Douglas was born October 9, 1927 in Jackson County, FL to the late Eddie William and Flordia Lewis Douglas. He lived in the Mystic Community for the past 32 years from Worth County. Mr. Douglas was a farmer, former welder at Tifton Cotton Mill and former co-owner/operator of Harper’s Upholstery Shop in Mystic. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife: Clydie G. Douglas of Mystic; daughters and sons-in-law: Martha Ann and Tony Handley of Mystic, June and Truman Groover of Jamesville, NC, Judy and Melvin Hunt of Mitchell County and Wanda and Earl Bridges of Albany; son: Herschel Douglas of Sylvester; six grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; sister: Bernice Harris of Sumner.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Jane Douglas, one granddaughter, six brothers and two sisters.
Dewayne Luke
Dewayne Luke, 57, of Alapaha died Tuesday, November 7, 2006 at his residence.
Graveside services were held at 4 p.m. Thursday, November 9 at Spring Hill Cemetery, Irwin County, with the Rev. Billy Roberts and the Rev. James Bowen officiating.
Mr. Luke was born March 1, 1949 in Irwin County to Mary Alice Harper Smith and the late Charles Aubrey Luke. He lived in the community all of his life. Mr. Luke was a member of Lax Missionary Baptist Church.
Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law: Tasha Luke Howe and Joseph Howe of Valdosta; mother and stepfather: Mary Alice and Robert C. Smith of Alapaha; sister and brother-in-law: D’Anna and R.B. Tucker, Jr. of Alapaha; nephews: Sam and Nathan Tucker, both of Alapaha. He was preceded in death by a brother. Donnie Howell Luke.
Lou Belle Walker Thompson
Lou Belle Walker Thompson, 87, of Fitzgerald died Wednesday, November 8, 2006 at the Life Care Center in Fitzgerald.
Funeral services were held at 4:30 p.m. Friday, November 10 at the Paulk Funeral Home Chapel in Fitzgerald with the Rev. Ronnie Griner officiating. Interment followed in Evergreen Cemetery.
Music was provided by pianist Buddy Rimes, soloists Steve Mixon and Sylvia Rimes, guitarist Dennis Rimes and Wayne McDuffie on trumpet.
Wayne Thompson, Mike Revels, Scott Revels, James Champion, Ernest Thompson, Clint Revels and Chad Champion served as pallbearers. Donnie Champion and Steve Mixon were honorary pallbearers.
Mrs. Thompson was born October 31, 1919 in Irwin County to the late William Cleveland and Carrie Lou Johnston Walker. She was a homemaker and lived in the community all of her life. She is survived by her son: Jerald Eugene Thompson of Fitzgerald; long-time friend and companion: James Stanley Biggers of Fitzgerald; five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; sisters: Mary Ann Bailey of Fitzgerald, Clarice Aycock of Albany and Irene Kicklighter of Warner Robins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ovid Lloyd Thompson and a daughter, Carolyn Thompson Revels.

Curtis Benjamin Davis
Curtis Benjamin Davis, 84, of Ocilla died Saturday, November 4, 2006 at Dorminy Medical Center in Fitzgerald.
Funeral services were held at 12 p.m. Friday, November 10 at Ocilla Church of God with the Rev. Joseph S. Harrison, Jr. officiating. Music was provided by soloists Edna Watkins and Thelma J. Robinson and selections by the Pleasant Grove First Baptist Church choir. Interment followed in Ocilla Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were members of the Georgia Funeral Service Practitioners Association. Honorary pallbearers were Davis Funeral Home staff and deacons of the Pleasant Grove First Baptist Church.
Mr. Davis was born April 19, 1922 to the late Mr. and Mrs. Frank Davis, the youngest son of eight siblings. After graduating from high school in 1942, he was chosen to participate in a summer work study program in preparation for entrance into Morehouse College, Atlanta, but was drafted into the U.S. Army to serve in World War II.
After military service, Mr. Davis chose to remain in Ocilla and operated Davis Construction Company in partnership with his brothers. The company built the first home for the needy at the Koninia Farms in Americus, a venture which evolved into the nationally known Habitat for Humanity. He also operated a sundry shop known as “The Drug Store” and in 1957 took over operation of his brother-in-law’s funeral home. In 1961, Mr. Davis became a licensed funeral director and Davis Funeral Home continues to serve the Ocilla community today.
Along with his brothers, Mr. Davis worked to secure equality and civil rights for African-American citizens. He and his brother, Earnest filed a lawsuit against the Irwin County Board of Education in Federal Court around 1954. This began the Minimum Foundation program to make the schools equal.
Mr. Davis assisted in the registration of a thousand people in the 1950s after African-Americans secured voting rights and the Freedom Riders visited Ocilla.
Mr. Davis effectively worked to improve his hometown. He was a member and chairman of the Deacons Board at Pleasant Grove First Baptist Church, a member and served as president of the local NAACP and president of the Voters League. He served as a board member of the Habitat for Humanity, member of the Irwin County Board of Registrars, Ocilla Housing Authority and Ocilla Civic Club.
He departed his life sharing the same dreams as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.: “To see the day when a man will not be judged by the color of his skin, but by the content of his character.” (MLK)
Survivors include his wife: Josephine Spaulding Davis of Ocilla; daughter and son-in-law: Chanda and Joseph Harrison, Jr. of Lithonia; one grandson: Joseph Harrison, III of Lithonia; sister: Gussie C. Phillips of Ocilla; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Dorothy Davis and Lena Davis, both of Ocilla, Isabell (David) Carter and Lillian Spaulding of Toledo, OH, Ruth Spaulding, Aaron L. Spaulding, Jr. and Samuel T. (Carolyn) Spaulding of McRae.

Maggie B. Stout
Maggie Brooks Stout, 13 months, died Monday, November 6, 2006 at Tift Regional Medical Center.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, November 9 in the chapel of Albritton-Beaumont Funeral Directors with the Rev. Robert Thompson officiating. Burial followed in Oakridge Cemetery.
Josh Jordan, Walt Archer, Rusty Jordan and Blake Ayscue served as pallbearers, with Mike Roberts and Shane Green serving as honorary pallbearers.
Maggie was born October 4, 2005 in Tifton to Douglas Sheldon “Doug” Stout and Jennifer Lynn “Jenny” Stout, both of whom survive her. She was a lifetime resident of Tifton.
In addition to her parents, Maggie is survived by one brother, Douglas Garrett Stout of Tifton; her paternal grandparents, Ed and Wanda Stout of Ocilla and her maternal grandparents, Billy and Mary Jordan of Tifton.
William Henry Buck, Jr.
William Henry Buck, Jr. (“Buck”), 57, of Ocilla died Thursday, November 2, 2006.
Funeral services were held Saturday, November 11 at 1 p.m. at Strickland Temple, Tifton with Dr. Samuel McIntyre officiating. Isaiah Range gave the eulogy. Music was provided by soloists Valerie Belks and Tony White and selections from the church choir. Interment followed in Ocilla City Cemetery.
Mr. Buck was born May 23, 1949 to Maggie Lee Range Sutton and the late William Buck, Sr. of Tifton. He resided in Tifton until his first enlistment in the U.S. Army RA Infantry, rank SGT. E-5. His military honors include the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal W/1 Bronze Star, Vietnam Campaign Medal W/1960 Device, two O/S Bars, Sharpshooter (rifle M-14), Expert (rifle M-16) Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Korea).
While employed as a semi-tractor trailer driver, Mr. Buck lived in Tifton, then Miami and returned to the local area in 1993.
Survivors include his wife: Diane Davis Buck of Ocilla; four daughters: Pamela Buck Payne and Pala Buck Middlebrooks, both of Ocilla, Petty Officer Cyndedra Barksdale of Norfolk, VA and Shantell Norris of Savannah; two sons: William Terrell Buck, III of Elk Grove, CA and Harold Norris of Tifton; 13 grandchildren; two sisters: Elizabeth Range Pratcher of Detroit, MI, Lindell Sutton Baisden of Tifton; six brothers: Isaiah Range of Colorado Springs, CO, Randy, Brandy, Ronald, Donald and Grady Sutton of Tifton.
Mildred Eubanks Purvis
Mildred Eubanks Purvis, 61, of Tift County died Saturday, November 11, 2006 at Medical University Hospital of Charleston, South Carolina.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today, Wednesday, November 15 at Riverbend Baptist Church in Irwin County with the Rev. George Paulk and the Rev. Terance Stonecypher officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Purvis was born August 26, 1945 in Randolph County to the late William Franklin and Lonie Shadrack Eubanks. She graduated from Randolph County High School, was a former resident of Cuthbert, Irwin County and lived in Tift County since 1979. Mrs. Purvis was a homemaker and a former lunchroom lady at Tift County High School. She was a member of Riverbend Baptist Church and a member of the Tift Area Auto Club.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law: Howard F. and Donna Purvis of Tifton; grandchildren: Katie Exum, Laura Flanders, David Flanders and R. J. Flanders; brother: William “Bill” Eubanks of Albany. She was preceded in death by her husband, Franklin D. Purvis.

Eunice Griner Carrington
Eunice Griner Carrington, 97, of Tifton, died Monday, November 13, 2006 at her residence.
Funeral services will be held at 11 AM Wednesday, November 15, 2006, in the chapel of Albritton-Beaumont Funeral Directors with Elder Jeff Harris officiating. Burial will follow at Oakridge Cemetery.
Carl Hall, Greg Jones, Mark Richardson, Otis Jones, Carlton Lupo and Allen Boyd will serve as pallbearers with Kealous Hall serving as honorary pallbearer.
Born August 18, 1909 in Irwin County to the late Daniel Griner and Catherine Henley Griner, Mrs. Carrington was also preceded in death by her husband, L.D. “Dick” Carrington, who died in February 1995.
Mrs. Carrington, who spent most of her life in Tift County, was born and died on a wrought iron bed, which remains in her daughter’s home. She was a homemaker and the oldest member of her church, Old Valley Grove Primitive Baptist Church in Irwin County. She was loving and faithful to her church, family and friends.
Mrs. Carrington is survived by one daughter and one son-in-law, Norma and Lonnie Boyd of Tifton; a special nephew, Otis Jones and his wife, Jackie Jones, of Tifton; two special nieces, Estoria Reynolds and Barbara Lupo, both of Ocilla; special friends, Pete Roberts and Debbie Newsome; and a beloved Yorkie named “Cheche.”
