Mary Kathryn Johnson Cofer
Graveside services for Mrs. Mary Kathryn Johnson Cofer, 93, of Copeland Road, Greshamville, were held Sunday, October 24, 1999, at Siloam Cemetery with Rev. Douglas Bower officiating. She died Friday, October 22, at Greene-Point Health Care Center, Union Point.
Mrs. Cofer was a native of Taliaferro County and was the daughter of the late Tom and Carrie Johnson. She was the widow of Bill James and J.D. (Skeeter) Cofer. She had retired as a finisher with Union Manufacturing Co. and was a member of the Siloam Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Ellen J. Faust, Greshamville; two grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a step-daughter-in-law, Evelyn Cofer of Washington; a stepson-in-law, Smokey Johnson of Norwood; and six step-grandchildren.
George Newton Cawley
Funeral services for George Newton Cawley, 81, of Metasville Road, Washington, were held Friday, October 22, 1999, at Rehoboth Baptist Church, Washington, with Rev. Jim Edwards and Rev. Dan Fernandez officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. He died Wednesday, October 20, at Columbia-Augusta Medical Center.
Mr. Cawley was a native of Richmond County and was the son of the late Newton Edward Cawley and the late Ida Carolyn Blackstone Cawley. He had retired from Federal Paper Board, was a U.S. Army veteran, and a member of Rehoboth Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Rosa Mae Cawley; two sons, Edward Cawley and Melvin Cawley, Lincolnton; two daughters, Sarah C. Parton, Lincolnton, and Brenda C. Lamar, Washington; two brothers, W.N. “Ben” Cawley and Charles Edward Cawley of Grovetown; two sisters, Addie C. Inglett, Grovetown, and Catherine C. Newsome, Martinez; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers included Joe Cawley, Ray Parton, Huey Inglett, Greg Norman, Tommy Norman and Frank Savage.

Funeral services for Wilson Hall, 78, of Atlanta, were held Sunday, October 24, 1999, at Springfield Baptist Church with Rev. Charles E. Lacey officiating. Burial was in City West Cemetery, Washington. He died October 18.
Mr. Hall was a native of Lincoln County and a member of Mt. Gilligans Church, Atlanta. He was the son of the late Glen and Lucy D. Hall.
Survivors include his wife, Florence Hall, Atlanta; a sister, Rosa Lee Henderson, Washington; a brother, George Hall, Washington; and two grandchildren.

Janie Lee Nunn Karel
Graveside services for Mrs. Janie Lee Nunn Karel, 86, of Lexington Road, Washington, were held Sunday, October 17, 1999, at 3 p.m., in Resthaven Cemetery, Washington, with Dr. John M. Childers and Rev. Albert W. Huyck Jr. officiating. She died Friday, October 15, in Wills Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Karel was born in Taliaferro County and was the daughter of the late George P. Nunn and the late Eva Tucker Nunn. She was a retired textile industry employee and was a taxidermist. She was the widow of Milton Karel and a devoted member of the First Baptist Church, Washington.
Survivors include two daughters, Eva R. Bufford of Atlanta, and Emily Rorie, Augusta; a brother, Warren Nunn, Washington; three sisters, Mildred McAvoy, Dorothy Hardy, and Doris Nunn, Washington; two grandsons, Webb Bufford, Washington, and Mark Stevenson, Atlanta; and two great-grandchildren, Stephen and Brian Bufford. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Janet Rorie Stevenson.
Pallbearers included Webb Bufford, Mark Stevenson, Jerry McAvoy, Dean Nunn, Joe Hardy, and Billy Swann.

Funeral services for Mrs. Lois Helen Bufford Walton, 83, of Delhi Road, Tignall, were held Monday, October 18, 1999, at 3 p.m., at the Pope’s Chapel Methodist Church, Tignall, with Rev. Paul Reviere officiating. She died Saturday, October 16, in Wills Memorial Hospital, Washington.
Mrs. Walton was a native and lifelong resident of Tignall and was the daughter of the late Joe Bufford and the late Fannie Mae House Bufford. She was a member of the Tabor Baptist Church, Tignall, and was a retired textile worker.
Survivors include her husband, Henry Clark Walton of Tignall; a brother, Erson Bufford, Tignall; and a sister, Sara Bufford, Tignall.

Graveside services for James Leslie Young, 74, of West Hill Road, Lincolnton, were held Friday, October 15, 1999, at the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery, Washington, with Rev. Terry Casper officiating. He died Wednesday, October 13, in the University Hospital, Augusta.
Mr. Young was a native of Wilkes County and had lived in Lincoln County for the past 33 years. He was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church and was a truck driver. He was the son of the late Combs Young and the late Mamie Flint Young.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Howard Young of Lincolnton; four sons, Allen Young, Joe Young, John Young, and Wyatt Holsenback of Lincolnton, and Dan Young of Macon; two daughters, Judy Callaway, Washington, and Patricia Andrews, Lincolnton; three brothers, Charles Young, Johnny Young, and Tommy Young, all of Washington; two sisters, Margaret Gunter, Washington, and Betty Drinkard, Stone Mountain; and 12 grandchildren.

Mrs. Jones was a native of Taliaferro County and the daughter of the late Harold Wheeler, and the late Dora Stewart Wheeler. She was a member of the Margaret’s Grove Baptist Church and a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Harold Jones, Crawfordville; a son, Ronald Jones, North Augusta; a brother, Harold Wheeler, Elberton; and two grandchildren.

James Paul Teems
Funeral services for James Paul Teems, 76, of Denison, Texas, were held Saturday, October 2, 1999, at Cedarlawn Memorial Park with Rev. Keith Taylor officiating. He died September 30 at his residence in Denison.
Mr. Teems was born in Tignall, and was the son of the late Robert and Nannie Belle Teems. He was a service technician for Monroe Sweda Int., and was a member of Southside Baptist Church, Denison.
Survivors include his wife, Texene Shields Teems of Denison, Texas; three sons, Joe Teems, Dallas, Texas, Barry Teems, Carrollton, Texas, and James C. Teems, Savoy, Texas; a daughter, Delania Teems, Dallas, Texas; three brothers, William Teems, Salt Lick, Ky., Roy Teems and Hugh Teems, both of Tignall; three sisters, Gertrude Long, Tignall, Pauline Parker, Fort Walton Beach, Fla., and Lois Savage, Tignall; a grandson, and a great-grandson.

James B. Saxon
Funeral services for James B. Saxon, 78, of Calhoun Falls, SC, will be held Friday, October 22, 1999, at the Northside Baptist Church in Calhoun Falls at 1 p.m., with Rev. Jerry Dalton and Rev. Herman Bradley officiating. Burial will be in the Beulah Baptist Church Cemetery, Tignall. He died Tuesday, October 19, at his home.
Mr. Saxon was born in Wilkes County and was the son of the late Isom V. Saxon and the late Mary Ella Gill Saxon. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and had retired from Burlington Industries in Calhoun Falls after 30 years of service. He was a member of the Northside Baptist Church where he served as a deacon; a former Sunday School director; former teacher of the Golden Circle Class; and served as the groundskeeper. He worked with the Bobby Brown State Park Ministry through the church for over 20 years and with the Calhoun Falls State Park Sunday Ministry; and was a former trustee. He conducted Sunday morning worship services at Heardmont Nursing Home, Elberton. He worked part-time at Bi-Lo in Abbeville, S.C.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Annis Anderson Saxon of Calhoun Falls; a son, Bennie E. Saxon, Greer, S.C.; a daughter, Barbara S. Bradley, Greer, S.C.; a sister, Mildred Saxon Sisson, Washington; six grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers included Gene Winfrey, Gene Winfrey Jr., Chris McAvoy, Jamie Saxon, Dewey Pledger, MacArthur Strickland, and Barry Murray.
Deacons and trustees of Northside Baptist Church and Carl Sisson Jr. were honorary pallbearers.

Vara J. Casteel
Funeral services for Mrs. Vara J. Casteel, 96, of Eastman were held at Horne Funeral Home Chapel in Alma with Dr. Jerry Peale officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery in Alma. She died October 1, 1999, in the Eastman hospital.
Mrs. Casteel was born in Laurens County and was the daughter of the late Braxton and Beatrice Jackson. She was the widow of R.G. (Bob) Casteel who was the son of the late Dr. L.R. Casteel of Wilkes County. She was the oldest member of the Eastman First Baptist Church and was a former school teacher for many years.
Survivors include three daughters, Harriett Casteel Hulsey of Walnut Creek, CA, Robbie Casteel Revel of Woodland Hills, CA, and Joanne Casteel Cox of New Port Richey, Fla.; seven grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are three sisters-in-law, Evelyn Casteel Young of Washington; Ruth Casteel Jones of Panama City, Fla., and Marie McGehee of Cedartown.
Sara Matthews Adams
Funeral services for Mrs. Sara Matthews Adams, 89, of Elberton were held Saturday, October 9, 1999, at the Memorial Chapel of Berry Funeral Home in Elberton with Rev. Gary Purvis officiating. Burial was in Elmhurst Cemetery in Elberton. She died Thursday, October 7, in the Elbert Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Adams was a native of Lincoln County and was the daughter of the late W.O. Matthews and the late Kate House Matthews. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Elberton, and had retired from United Merchants. She was the widow of Lowell Adams.
Survivors include a son, Leon Adams of Marietta; and two grandchildren.

Pat Allen Walton
Graveside services for Pat Allen Walton, 84, of Lincolnton were held Saturday, October 9, at the Rehoboth Baptist Church Cemetery in Wilkes County with Rev. Donald Walton officiating. He died Thursday, October 7, at his home.
Mr. Walton was a native of Wilkes County and was the son of the late Peter A. Walton and the late Zoedove Martin Walton. He was a United States Army veteran of World War II in the Pacific Theater. He had retired from McCormick Mill and had been co-owner of Garden Court Motor Hotel in Jacksonville, Fla. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife, Julia Wheless Walton of Lincolnton; a daughter, Judy Hayes, Winterville; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
