Sadie Mae Hopkins
Graveside services for Miss Sadie Mae Hopkins, 97, of LaPrade Street, Washington, were held Tuesday, April 11, 2000, at 11 a.m. in Resthaven Cemetery, Washington, with Rev. Paul Reviere officiating. She died April 9 in Wills Memorial Hospital, Washington.
Miss Hopkins was born in Wilkes County and had lived here all of her life. She was the daughter of the late Walter L. Hopkins and the late Nellie Martin Hopkins and was the oldest member of the Clifford’s Grove Baptist Church. She had retired as an inspector at Royal Manufacturing Co., Washington.
Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Lucy Airhart, Nixa, Missouri; and several nieces and nephews.
Nephews served as pallbearers.

Ruby Collins Echols
Funeral services for Mrs. Ruby Collins Echols, 90, of Forrest Lane, Washington, were held Saturday, April 8, 2000, at 11 a.m., at the Clark’s Station Baptist Church near Jackson Crossroads with Rev. Clayton Sanders and Rev. Randy Bray officiating. Burial was in Resthaven Cemetery, Washington. She died April 5 at Wilkes Health Care Center, Washington.
Mrs. Echols was born in Wilkes County and had lived most of her life here. She was the daughter of the late Jones Collins and the late Georgia Gulley Collins. She was the widow of James C. Echols and was a homemaker. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Washington.
Survivors include two sons, James C. Echols, Washington, and Cecil J. Echols, Luthersville; a daughter, Dorothy Ponder, Ashburn; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers included Dennis Echols, Jeffrey Echols, John Sherrer Jr., Jim A. Cook, Dave McCranie, and Carl Morse.

Hershey Edwards
Graveside services for Hershey Edwards, 60, of Florida Lane, Tignall, will be held Thursday, April 13, 2000, at 3:30 p.m., at the Reeves Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery, Tignall, with Rev. M.W. Gresham officiating. He died April 7.
Mr. Edwards was a native of Wilkes County and was the son of the late Della Merriweather and the late Hershey Edwards. He was a truck driver and a member of Reeves Chapel Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Jean Edwards; two sons, Michael Edwards and Hershey Edwards III, Tignall; two daughters, Kathy Barksdale, Washington, and Barbara Jean Edwards, Charleston, S.C.; three sisters, Lou Neal Walton and Mable Watts, Tignall, and Willie Edwards, Heamstead, N.Y.; a brother, Johnny Edwards, Tignall; six grandchildren, Crystal M. Dy, Michael De Angelo Edwards, Pasha O’nay Blackmon, Michael Tyler Calloway, Ramello Antonio Miller, and Tyesha La’Nettie Brewer.

Nelson Cullars
Funeral services for Nelson Cullars, 80, of Ashley Avenue, Washington, were held June 28, 2000, at the Rocky Mount Baptist Church, Washington, with Rev. Roy Andrews officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. He died June 23.
Mr. Cullars was a native of Wilkes County and was the son of Marshall and Ida Cullars. His wife was the late Mary D. Cullars. He was a member of the Rocky Mount Baptist Church and had worked for many years as an orderly at Wills Memorial Hospital.
Survivors include two sons, Charles E. Cullars, Washington, and Nelson Cullars Jr., Atlanta; two daughters, Carolyn Dalton, Columbia, S.C., and Ida Kate Christian, Washington, D.C.; two stepsons, Willie T. Irvin, Washington, and Fred Irvin Jr., New Jersey; five sisters, Anna Jackson, Philadelphia, PA, Lily Pink Cullars, Washington, Grace Parks, Lincolnton, Viola Freeman, Lincolnton, and Evelyn Danner, Washington; three brothers, Robert Cullars, Jimmy Cullars and L.D. Cullars, Washington; 14 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.

Charles L. Wolfe
Graveside services for Charles L. Wolfe, 80, of Lovelace Way, Washington, were held Sunday, June 25, 2000, at Washington-Wilkes Memorial Gardens, Washington, with Rev. Jim Edwards officiating. He died June 24 at Lake Crossing Health Center, Appling.
Mr. Wolfe was a native of Wilkes County and was the son of the late Noke Wolfe and the late Mattie Sue McNeeley Wolfe. He had retired as shipping manager for Almar Mfg. Co. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II during which time he received the World War II Victory Medal, American Theater Ribbon, EAMET Service Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. He was a member of VFW Post 5899, Washington, and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Taylor Wolfe, Washington; two sons, Charles L. Wolfe Jr., McCormick, S.C., and Tommy Wolfe, Washington; a daughter, Jeannie Wolfe, Jasper; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and five sisters, Annette White, Bath, S.C., Lois Williams, Augusta, Betty Mills, Lexington, S.C., Dorothy Faye Wolfe, Milledgeville, Agnes Wilson, Rockmart, Marvelle Thornton and Myrtice Stevens, Washington.
Pallbearers included Allen Wolfe, Tim Wolfe, Brandon Wolfe, Nick Wolfe, Lester Wolfe, and Jeff Hackney.

Margaret Mitchell Edwards
Funeral services for Mrs. Margaret Mitchell Edwards, 80, of Washington, were held Saturday, June 24, 2000, at Faith Christian Center, Washington, with L.V. Turman, pastor, officiating. Burial was in the New Salem Baptist Church Cemetery, Washington. She died June 17, in Wills Memorial Hospital, Washington.
Mrs. Edwards was a native of Wilkes County and the daughter of the late Garnett and Lily Mae Mitchell. She was the widow of Leonard Edwards and was a member of the New Salem Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Sallie L. Mitchell, Atlanta, and Elizabeth Thornton, Washington; three sisters, Luell Jenkins, and Mary L. Jackson, Atlanta, and Christine Brown, Philadelphia, Pa.; three bothers, Nathaniel Mitchell, Frank Mitchell, and Lizzell Mitchell, all of Philadelphia; seven grandchildren, Hover L. Stripling, Alphonso Stripling, Kathy S. Bussey, all of Atlanta, Patricia E. Thomas, Aretha Perlotte, Henry Thornton III, and Ijuanna Mitchell Bell, all of Washington; and four great-grandchildren.

Annie Lou Fambrough, Bonner
Funeral services for Mrs. Annie Lou Fambrough, Bonner, 94, of Crawfordville, were held Tuesday, June 27, 2000, at the Crawfordville Baptist Church with Rev. John Autry officiating. Burial was in the Crawfordville Cemetery. She died June 25.
Mrs. Bonner was born in Social Circle and was the daughter of the late William Fambrough and the late Maude Simons Fambrough. She was the widow of Clarence Eugene Bonner. She was owner and operator of the well-known Bonner’s Cafe in Crawford and had been featured in Southern Living, The Atlanta Journal, The Los Angeles Times, and The Augusta Chronicle. She had been honored by the Governor’s Commission for Restaurant Tourism. She was a member of the Crawfordville Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, Robert N. (Bobby) Bonner, Kingsport, Tenn.; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Howard Fambrough and George Fambrough, both of Crawfordville.
Pallbearers included Robert Kendrick, Bobby Jones, Paul Jackson, Stan Jackson, Marc Richards, Melvin Forehand, and George Ledford.

Funeral services for Johnnie B. Curry, 86, of Augusta were held Tuesday, June 27, 2000, at Elliott Sons Funeral Home, Augusta, with Rev. Jessie Brown officiating. Burial was in the Groves Cemetery, Wilkes County. He died Saturday, June 24, in the Veterans Hospital, Augusta.
Mr. Curry was a native of Wilkes County and was a retired postal worker. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of Gibson Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Daisy M. Katheryn House McClearen
Graveside services for Mrs. Katheryn House McClearen of Lithonia were held Tuesday, June 13, 2000, at Floral Hills Memory Gardens, Lithonia, with Dr. Jim Martin officiating. She died June 10.
Mrs. McClearen was a native of Wilkes County and a member of the First Baptist Church of Lithonia. She was manager of publications for the IRS and retired in 1977 with 32 years of service.
Survivors include her husband, Robert F. McClearen; a son, Robert McClearen, Alpharetta; two grandsons; and a sister, Mrs. Virginia Howard, Lithonia.
Mary Lou Jackson
Funeral services for Mary Lou Jackson, 57, were held Sunday, June 25, 2000, at Twin Oak Baptist Church, Washington, with Rev. Charlie Maddox officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. She died June 20.
She was born in Wilkes County and was the daughter of Lula Mat Willis, and the late Henry Willis. She had been a member of Twin Oak Baptist Church and later was a member of the First Community Baptist Church in Philadelphia, Pa. She was employed for 18 years with Achievement Through Counseling and Treatment in Philadelphia.
Survivors include her mother, Mrs. Lula Mat Willis, Washington; her husband, George Jackson, Philadelphia; a daughter, Stacey Jackson; a son, George Jackson Jr., of Philadelphia; a sister, Vivian Brown, Ellenwood; Six brothers, Henry Willis, Ozzie Willis, James Evans, Philadelphia, Pa., Robert Lee Willis, Leroy Willis of Atlanta, and Arthur Willis, Washington; and one granddaughter.

Lillie Beatrice Partlow Lowe
A memorial service was held Friday, June 16, 2000, at 7 p.m., at the Chapel of Willis Funeral Home, Dalton, for Mrs. Lillie Beatrice Partlow Lowe, 90, of the Ridgewood Manor Nursing Center, Dalton. District Elder Reuben Graham and other ministers officiated. She died Monday, June 12, at the Ridgewood Center.
Mrs. Lowe was a former resident of Washington-Wilkes and of Philadelphia, Pa. She was the widow of Willie Thomas Lowe.
Survivors include a granddaughter, Mrs. Regina Partlow Grant, Dalton; two grandsons, Leroy Cade, Philadelphia, and Tony Partlow, Gulf Port, Miss.; and eight great-grandchildren.

Hazel Saggus Darden
Funeral services for Mrs. Hazel Saggus Darden, 84, of Atlanta were held Friday, June 16, 2000, at the Raytown Baptist Church, Sharon, with Rev. Arthur Gunn officiating. Burial was in the Sharon United Methodist Church Cemetery. She died June 13, at her home.
Mrs. Darden was the widow of Thomas Nelson Darden, an electrical engineer with the General Electric Co. until his retirement. She was a longtime member of the Raytown Baptist Church.
Survivors include three brothers, W Vernon Saggus, Decatur, E Earl Saggus, Atlanta, and Lawrence D. Saggus, Tucker; a nephew, Larry D. Saggus, Tucker; and a niece, Bonnie Saggus Owenby, Cumming.

William John Sturgis
Graveside services for William John Sturgis, 52, of Bull Street, Washington, were held Monday, June 12, 2000, at New Hope CME Church Cemetery, Washington, with Rev. Dennis Quinn officiating. He died June 9.
Mr. Sturgis was a native of Wilkes County and was the son of Mamie C. Sturgis and the late John Henry Sturgis. He was a carpenter and a member of the New Hope CME Church.
Survivors in addition to his mother include two sons, Dwane Johnson and Taurus Johnson; a daughter, Cassandra Johnson; three sisters, Lessie Hampton, Donna Butler, and Lillie Sturgis; a brother, Leroy Sturgis; and six grandchildren.

Gene Higgins Adams
Graveside services for Gene Higgins Adams, 82, of 312 Miamola Avenue, Sandersville, will be held Thursday, June 15, 2000, at 10 a.m. in the Brownwood Cemetery in Sandersville. He died June 13 in the University Hospital, Augusta.
Mr. Adams was a native of Tignall and was the son of the late Edward Walter Adams and the late Ida Higgins Adams. He was a farmer and former owner of the Washington Ford Motor Company in Washington-Wilkes. He was a horse breeder and a judge for the American Saddle Horse Association. He was an international judge for the Tennessee Walking Horse Association, and was made a Kentucky Colonel. He was a member and former treasurer of he Grace Episcopal Church and had served as treasurer of the building fund.
Survivors include his wife, Marilyn Archer Adams of Sandersville; two daughters, Betty Adams Wise of Sandersville, and Dorothy Adams Campbell of Jonesboro; a son, Gene Stewart Adams of Chula; six grandchildren, Laura McCarthy, Kathie Davenport, Jeffery Adams, Krista Staton, Todd Campbell and Adam Campbell; and six great-grandchildren.
