Amelia Varela Hesse
A memorial life celebration for Mrs. Amelia Varela Hesse, 63, of East Robert Toombs Ave., Washington, was held Wednesday, September 13, 2000, at her home at 6 p.m. with Father Ryan officiating. She died September 6, 2000, in Houston, Texas.
Mrs. Hesse was born in Mexico City, Mexico, and had lived in Washington for the past 25 years. She was the daughter of Manuel Martinez and Amelia Martinez and was a homemaker and office manager. She was a member of the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Washington, and a supporter of the humane society.
Survivors include her husband, Dr. J.V. Hesse, Washington; two sons, J.M. Varela, Tampa, FL, and Carlos Varela, Atlanta; and five daughters, Johanna Rousey, Washington, Amelia Varela, Laurie Varela, and Amanda Varela, Atlanta; and Rebecca Koblensky, Toronto, Canada.

Irma Ferguson Ray Edwards
Funeral services for Mrs. Irma Ferguson Ray Edwards, 91, of Broad St., Crawfordville, were held Saturday, September 9, 2000, at the Sharon United Methodist Church, Sharon, with Sue Meeham, and Ira McKeever officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. She died Wednesday, September 6, in Wills Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Edwards was a native of Richmond County and was the daughter of the late Gamaliel W. Ferguson and the late Eva Barksdale Smith Ferguson. She was the widow of John Loren Ray and Lenys Edwards, and was a member of the Sharon United Methodist Church. She was a retired teacher and textile worker and was a member of the Sharon-Raytown Garden Club and the Eastern Star. She had lived most of her life in Taliaferro County.
Survivors include two sons, Wendell L. Ray, Gulf Shores, AL, and Terry A. Ray, North Augusta, SC; a daughter, Shirley Ray Noggle, Crawfordville; seven grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers included Douglas Ray Alexander, Parker Bernard Callaway, Ricky Edwards, Ryan Heath Mock, Joe Dillard Noggle III, William Loren Noggle, and Matthew Corey Noggle.

Owens V. Lunceford
Funeral services for Owens V. Lunceford, 87 of Alexander St., Crawfordville were held Saturday, September 9, 2000, at 2 p.m., at the Crawfordville Baptist Church with Rev. John Autry and Dr. Jimmy Waters officiating. Burial was in the Crawfordville Cemetery. He died September 7 in Minnie G. Boswell Hospital, Greensboro.
Mr. Lunceford was the son of the late Overton Lunceford and the late Clara Cannon Lunceford. His wife was the late Myra Griffeth Lunceford. He was a native and lifelong resident of Crawfordville and owned and operated Lunceford’s Grocery and Department Store in Crawfordville for many years. He was a member of the Crawfordville Baptist Church where he served as a deacon for 60 years and was honored as Deacon Emeritus in 1999. He also served as Sunday School director and Baptist Training Union director for a number of years.
Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Griffith, Crawfordville; a sister, Mrs. Mabel Fouche, Washington; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Pallbearers included Keith Brown, Kermit Hocutt, Hoyt Power, Chad Brown, Benji Amerson, and Wayne Hocutt.
Honorary pallbearers were members of the M.R. Saggus Sunday School Class, Bobby Moore and Wayne Williams.

Frankie Bailey Rousey

Burial will be in the church cemetery. She died Monday, September 11, in Athens Regional Medical Center, Athens.
Mrs. Rousey was a native of Lincoln County and was the daughter of the late Luther Bailey and the late Irene Adams Bailey. She had lived in Social Circle for the past 10 years and was a member of the Beulah Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Clyatt R. Rousey, Social Circle; two sons, Keith Rousey, Social Circle, and Bryson Rousey, Phoenix, AZ; two daughters, Rebecca Moss, Social Circle, and Judy Dobelmann, Galveston, TX; six grandchildren, Lisa, Michael, Jimmy, Amy, Richard, and Scarlett; and eight great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Foxworth was a native of Wilkes County, the daughter of the late Will and Mamie Harris. She had retired from Jefferson Hospital in Environmental Services in Philadelphia.
Survivors include a daughter, Yvonne Foxworth, Philadelphia; a brother, Jimmie L. Harris, Kittrell, NC; four nieces, Claudell McLendon, Sarah A. Sherrer, Nellie M. Graveside services for Mrs. Sadie Kirkland Moore, 66, of Evelyn Place, Brunswick, were held Sunday, September 10, 2000, at 5:30 p.m. at Phillips Mill Baptist Church Cemetery, Washington, with Rev. Randy Lamb officiating. She died Thursday, September 7, at her home.
Mrs. Moore was a native of Lincoln County and had lived in Jekyll Island for most of her life. She was the daughter of the late Ed Kirkland and the late Laura Davis Kirkland. She was a retired grocery cashier and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include her husband, Guy Yancey “Yank” Moore of Brunswick; three sons, Guy Yancey Moore Jr., Benjamin David Moore, and Charles Barry Moore, all of Brunswick; two sisters, Mrs. Frances Bentley and Mrs. Janie Combs, both of Washington; a brother, Lamar Kirkland, Orlando, FL; and six grandchildren.

Margaret “Peggy” Barnett Carithers
Funeral services for Mrs. Margaret “Peggy” Barnett Carithers, 49, of St. Simons Island, were held Saturday, September 9, 2000, at the St. Simons United Methodist Church with Rev. Dave Hanson officiating. Interment was in Oglethorpe Memorial Gardens. She died September 6.
Mrs. Carithers was a native of Athens and was the daughter of Aurelius P. Barnett and Margaret Barnett of Athens. She had been a resident of Glynn County for 29 years and had been employed by Georgia Natural Gas and Kitchen and Bath Concepts. She was a member of the St. Simons United Methodist Church, Delta Zeta sorority, and was a council member of the Okefenokee Boy Scout Council and Troops 227 and 214, Stephen Ministries and Vocational Advisory Council. She had received the Boy Scout District Award of Merit.
Survivors in addition to her parents include her husband, Robert Carithers of St. Simons Island; two sons, William Carithers and Graham Carithers of St. Simons Island; and an aunt, Betty Wiggins of Augusta.
Pallbearers included Bill Kirby, Mike Malone, Pierce Harris, Bill Hanson, Dave Pollard, Wayne Doke, Eric Segerberg, and Rick Brown.

Mrs. Garrard was a native of Hancock County and was the daughter of the late John M. King and the late Annie Lou Harton King. She was the widow of Henry G. Garrard Sr. and was a member of the Smyrna United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Lois Ann Norman, Washington; two step-daughters, Ruth G. Tutt and Elizabeth G. Hall, Washington; two grandchildren, Debbie Free, Savannah, and Jerry Norman, Washington; two great-grandchildren.

Carl D. Lunceford
A private memorial service for Carl D. Lunceford, 79, of Saluda, N.C., were held July 15, 2000, in Saluda. He died June 22.
Mr. Lunceford was a native of Wilkes County and was the son of the late Joseph Earl Lunceford and the late Ida Jane Echols Lunceford. His wife of 53 years was the late Ruth J. Lunceford. He was retired from the U.S. Navy and was a veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Hendersonville Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon and Ike Barkdoll, Knoxville, Tenn., and Debra and Sammy Gwynn, Richlands, N.C.; two sons and a daughter-in-law, David Lunceford, Savannah, and Mark and Cynthia Lunceford, Richlands, N.C.; a brother, John W. Lunceford, Lincolnton; a sister, Mrs. Walter (Mary) Gunter of Washington; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Peggy Melinda Brittian

Mrs. Whitener was born in Banks County, Georgia, and was the daughter of the late Dalton Lovell and the late Hattie Taylor Lovell. She had retired from the Elberton Manufacturing Co., and was of the Holiness faith. ShAe was the widow of Joe Whitener Jr.
Survivors include two daughters, Jessie Shoemaker, Tignall, and JoAnn Ferguson, Cartersville; a brother, Wates Lovell, Haines City, Fla; two sisters, Jessie L. Brungard, Warner Robins, and Equilla L. Thompson, Woodville; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mr. Thornton was a native of Wilkes County and was the son of the late Frank Thornton and the late Nellie Wheatley Thornton. He was a retired logger and a member of Rehoboth Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Wilma C. Thornton of Washington; three sons, Eddie Wayne Thornton and Daniel Lee Thornton, Washington, and Bobby Thornton, Thomson; two sisters, Frankie Thornton Carter, Washington, and Ruby T. Adkins, Warrenton; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Fisher was a native of Wilkes County and had lived most of her life in Wilkes County. She was a homemaker and the daughter of the late Henry N. Fouche and the late Martha Love Taylor Fouche.
Survivors include three sons, Hal Howard, Lee Howard, and Ricky Howard, all of Washington; three daughters, Carolyn Brown, Sandersville, Jean Brown, Covington, and Marie Payne, Covington; a stepson, Jimmy Risher, Crawfordville; a step-daughter, Dianne Lamar, Tignall; 19 grandchildren; and 33 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Anthony was born in Jackson County and was the daughter of the late George Thomas Bennett and the late Mary Helen Bennett. She was a beautician and had lived most of her life in Jackson County.
Survivors include her husband, Mike W. Anthony, Tignall; a daughter, Kimberly Michele Anthony, Tignall; four sons, Neal Cox, Greg Cox, of Winterville, Scott Cox, Carnesville, and David Cox, Nicholson; two sisters, Tina Kujaneck of Winterville, and Charlotte Boyd, Carnesville; two brothers, George Bennett of Commerce; and Tommy Bennett, Marietta; and 16 grandchildren.
